Serene looked up as her ears picked up the sounds of approaching steps, the doctor in his white overall met her inquiring gaze and he gave a slight nod, he walked ahead of her and she immediately followed after.
"How is she feeling now?" She asked the robust doctor who had always attended to her mother as soon as they entered his office, she looked him in the eyes, trying to appear as calm as she can ever be."Worse". He expressed with a sigh and looked at me with pity.Serene nodded, the response was expected and she understood what he meant quite well, as it was until that moment, they had always said that it was hopeless for her mother to ever become better. She would have to be stuck in her delusions until she die."Miss, I really don't want to blame you in the past after seeing how relentlessly you have always watched over your mother however, there may have been a little hope if you had brought her here a little earlier" the doctor placed his hands on the table and stared at her calmly.A flustered glint and a moment of anger flashed through her eyes, she dropped her gaze and pressed her lips together, her waist-length straight hair fell across her shoulder, and strands of the hair littered her face. After a moment, she raised her face and offered a calm smile to the doctor."I understand," she stated emotionlessly and looked at the door, "I will visit again some other time, please do what you should," she said and rose from her seat. Without giving the doctor a chance to bid her farewell, she unhurriedly left the office.Standing by the side of the road, Serene looked listlessly at the busy road ahead of her, her plain face was hidden behind thick-rimmed glasses, her skin had become darker over the year of series of hard labor. She parted her lips and heaved a soft sigh.Life had been indeed very hard for her...However, she was just not the kind to give up soon, She clenched her fist and in a flash, she regained her notorious look.Ding.Ding.The notification sound of her phone distracted her from her thoughts. She dug her fingers into her pocket and pulled out her phone, she tapped the screen of her phone impatiently and narrowed her eyes to read the notifications.'Dear customer, your rent is six months long due, please pay up before the week runs out''Dear Candidate, due to lack of competence, you have failed the interview to work at...''Daughter, I have run into some troubles, could you please transfer five thousand to me? I swear I will pay you back this time!'Reading through the first three messages, she really felt the urge to curse and beat up someone, she snorted coldly and tightened her grip on the phone.Such bad news! She immediately deleted the messages with irritation. Just as her finger hovered above the last message which was unread, she froze and clicked on it.'Sister, am I going to die soon? I heard the doctors saying I need the bone marrow transplant urgently. You don't have to pressure yourself anyway, I have lived long enough...'Her chest tightened and her breathing became difficult, her eyes reddened after she read the message. She was in enough debt that could last her a lifetime already, and even if she wanted to abandon everyone causing her downfall, she never thought of ignoring her little brother. He was young and innocent, who would have thought he would be diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of seventeen when he was just maturing to be a youth? He was quite smart and had a bright future but everything seem to be unreal now.Serene could not bother to give up on this brother, she did not exactly love him but she still consider him her only reasonable family member and her responsibility. Now, she realized her little earnings from hard labor would no longer cater to him if she really wanted him to survive. She clenched her fist, she did not want him to die!She had applied for a series of jobs recently but was declined by every one of the jobs. She had always lived up to the expectations of her ill luck but now, she simply want to get out of it.She needed a job, she really wish she can get one... a good one that pays well. But, that was almost impossible in the situation she was in. Even her good luck had reached its limit and it no longer worked for her now."Useless..." she hissed and pushed back her thick glasses. She was about to return her cell phone to her pocket when another notification flashed on the screen. Thinking it was another bad luck message, she clicked it open uninterestingly and read through it only to see that it was a message from a familiar number.'Hey, Rene! I have a piece of good news for you, I think I may have found you a job that will really pay well this time! It was a good friend of mine at work that I heard it from... long story cut short, just come over to P.A.L.S and I will tell you the gist in detail! 8:00 pm sharp, don't make me wait for you, love you!'"A good job?" Serene mumbled to herself and knitted her brows. To her, the message seemed too exaggerated to be true. She decided to go anyway, she needed a slight distraction after such a long day.She pocketed her phone and ran her fingers through her hair before putting on an old baseball cap. She picked up her pace and walked until she found herself in the hospital where her brother was admitted. At the time she came in, the young man was sleeping in the bed, he appeared very sickly and pale, still, his youthful handsomeness cannot be disputed. The smell of disinfectant and drugs assaulted her nose and the sounds of the machines connected to her brother's body hurt her ears. She was surely a strong girl but at that moment, she simply wanted to cry.She sat in a corner of the ward and cupped her face. In the absence of any form of comfort, she cried silently..."I may be useless, but I won't let you die..." A resolute thought rushed into Serene's mind, her heart was filled with new encouragement and she stood up from the corner she was huddled in. She did not know for how long she had slept but she only knew that she was so depressed that she cried herself to sleep. By the time she rose up, it was already late in the evening and the sky had become darker. She drew in a deep breath and looked at the figure in the bed, after a while, she turned her eyes away and walked out of the ward. Little did she know that just as she had left, the sickly young man on the bed opened his eyes, his thick dark lashes fluttered lazily and his lips were pressed together with difficulty. "Sister..." he blinked, a tear trailed down his pale face and fell on the pillow. Serene flagged down a taxi in front of the hospital building and gave the address of the most popular club to the taxi driver. In a few minutes, the taxi stopped in front of the club and Seren
"About the job, I don't really know much about the job description but I know that it will definitely pay well. You remember Betty White, our classmate in high school who now works as an assistant to a top model in the country? I met her by coincidence in a mall yesterday and she briefly mentioned the job. She did not also say much and just said that her boss needed a lady urgently for a particular job and she was going to pay well. They can't go public about the job for some reason. Anyway, that is not the case now, I was able to get the contact address of the person we can talk to. I really hope you can take this job, so I already helped you to book an appointment with them for tomorrow. I will send you the details too" Paige carefully said. She secretly lowered her eyes and stole a glance at her friend to see what her emotions were like but as usual, Serene's face remained calm and expressionless. There was only a tint of redness on her cheeks that was caused by the alcohol she dra
"I look forward to doing business with you, Mr. Crawfard" In a dimly lit private room in a high class restaurant, a young man in a well-tailored and ironed expressed deeply, he leaned forward and shook hands with the other occupant of the room who was a slightly older man. The man who seemed to be in his early fifties smiled and shook the young man politely. "It is indeed a pleasure, Mr. Jobbs. Your grandfather speaks very highly of you and you have truly proved your worth in this collaboration. Hopefully, we are very satisfied in the end" The man said. "Mm" The young man nodded. "Since it is done, we will take our leave first." The older man uttered and stood up. Steve Jobbs stood up alongside the older man and gave a slight nod in acknowledgment. The older man smiled in satisfaction before walking out of the private room with his assistant after him. After taking a few steps away from the private room, the man paused his steps and tilted his body a little bit in the direction
The two men stepped out of the Private room and walked out of the restaurant. The night was already basking in a starless night. The rays from the streetlights around every corner illuminated the area. The city was even as active at night just as it was during the day. Steve walked in the direction where his black Ferrari was parked. His assistant also maintained a good pace behind him and as soon as they got to the car, he walked forward and pushed open the car door. His boss was just about to step in when he suddenly opened his mouth. "Eh, Mr. Steve..." James called and the man paused. He threw him a glance and arched a questioning brow."What is it that you have to say?" Steve queried calmly."Boss, your smell... I think your body have been corrupted with the scent from other people. Do you want me to send the suit to the laundry?" James asked. Steve's brows furrowed, he subconsciously raised his hand to his nose and took a whiff of the smell of himself. He had first expected to
Serene woke up at exactly seven that morning, she yawned and stretched lazily. She shook off the old blanket that she used to cover her body and climbed out of the bed. She stumbled to the bathroom and subconsciously turned on the tap. Cold water gushed out of the tap and she was forced to take a step back. She raised her brows and turned off the tap again. It looks like they have pitied her again and gave her water. She took her toothbrush and forcefully squeezed out the last toothpaste from the tube to brush her teeth. After brushing her teeth, she returned her toothbrush and stole a glance at her reflection on the mirror. She had a straight long hair that was very thick and full, her heart-shaped face made her appear delicate and cute, the kind of innocent beauty that made people's heart fluster. The years of hard work had made her skin darker but she still met with the latest beauty standard of the girls of her age. She dropped her eyes and and looked at her palm. She saw the c
"Why is she not here yet? I thought you said the appointment you sent is for nine O'clock? This is already few minutes past nine!" A soft but arrogant voice rang across the corners of the private room. Amelia Elliott, an internationally known model sat on the couch and twirled a glass of wine between her fingers, she threw an impatient look at her assitant as she questioned. She did not have much free time to spare and she hated it that she had to wait for a person for that long. As good as she may appear on the screen on many, only a few insiders new how bad and erratic her attitude was to those beneath her. "Amy, she should arrive soon, I am sorry for keeping you waiting" the assitant hurriedly responded and apologized. She discreetly glanced at the time and her watch and saw that it was indeed past nine. She silently prayed that the person they were waiting from arrived soon. She could not bear to be the victim of Amelia's anger. "She had better arrive soon!" Amy snared and pull
"You amuse me, Serene" Amy suddenly said and leaned back against her chair while she tapped her wine glass with her fingers making a rhythmic sound. Serene arched a brow, she did not understand what Amy meant. "You did not even read through what you have in the contract and simply signed it" Amy smirked and played even more with her glass. Serene tilted her head and cast a look at Amy, "have you not said everything that is in the contract?" She asked calmly. Pfft–Amy snickered, in her opinion, she just thought that Serene was simply dumb. Why would anyone sign a contract with going through its content? Isn't she just exposing her level of stupidity? Amy even concluded that Serene could be easily used by her and this deepened her smile. "Well, since you believe whatever I say concerning the contract, it is also included in the contract that you have to listen to every other addition clause I might like to include to the contract. In other words, during the period of the contract,
"First People's hospital, thank you" Serene said to the taxi driver as she got in. "Okay, young lady!" The driver uttered and drove into the road. Serene leaned against the chair, she was just about to close her eyes when the notification sound of her phone rang into her ears. She sat properly and straightened her back before pulling out the phone to check out the notification she had received. She unlocked the phone and clicked the screen patiently. Then, she saw that it was a notification from her bank, at first she wanted to close the message with the thoughts that it was the usual spam messages from bank but, the moment something caught her eyes, her fingers froze over the screen of the phone. The message she saw this time around was in like this. 'You account XXXX had been credited with $500,000' "!!!" Her body tensed and her eyes popped open, she opened her mouth and her jaw dropped. She subconsciously wanted to drop her phone when she saw that her account which only had a
