Being A Maid

ELSA'S POV:

I had no idea what I had done, but it was pretty bad to get Alpha Nathan coming to my quarters and ordering that I should be dragged out in the field.

With a little thud, the guards that had seized me let go of me, and I hit my butt so hard on the rocky ground. All the servants had gathered, and in the midst of the crowd was Rue smirking at me, and I had a feeling that my predicament had everything to do with her.

"Whip her until she has no legs to walk." Alpha Nathan commanded and turned to leave when I spoke up. "Please, sir, what did I do?" I needed to know what my offense was.

He stared down at me with a begrudged look and said, "Your only crime was existing." His tone was so cold that I could feel the chills emanating from him.

Swallowing hard, I watched him leave and got ready to be flogged.

The guard on my right raised his hand, about to hit me, when I caught sight of a man in the crowd. He was in all black, with his face hidden in the shadows. I blinked twice, and he was gone.

The impact of the whip sent my mind jolting to reality, and that's when I realized I had been dreaming.

Mina stood akimbo, grinning at me with a cane in her hand. Obviously, it was the impact of her cane that had woken me up.

"What's that for?" I yelled and struggled to get out of bed.

"You were not waking up. I needed something hard to wake you up; that's why I used the cane." She explained and waved the cane around to emphasize her point.

I sighed and quickly changed my damp dress into a dry one. I was drenched in my own sweat.

"Why are you here?" I asked when she didn't say anything after a while.

"I came to fetch you; you and I are going to the market."

"On whose order?" I asked, not feeling so happy about the news. I thought I was only supposed to run errands for Ezekiel.

"On Ms. Bennett's order, She says since Ezekiel isn't around and Rue had let you off her hook, she couldn't afford to have you lie around all day." Mina grinned widely, clearly pleased.

“Where did Ezekiel go?” I asked, eagerly waiting for her response.

Mina smirked and turned her head away. “I have no idea.” Something told me she knew; she just didn't want to tell me. I rolled my eyes as my mind went back to the dream I just had.

'Your only crime was existing'

What could that mean?

And the man in the shadow?

"Let's go now; the driver is waiting." Mina said, startling me a bit. A frown crossed my face, showing how much she was being a pest.

"What?" She raised her brows in question, dragging me out of the room. "Don't look at me like that." She threw her nose in the air and shoved me outside, making me stumble.

I gave her an annoyed look and walked out without saying anything.

The engine of the car was running by the time we got outside, and the driver looked like he was tired of waiting for us.

The driver smiled upon seeing us. I returned his smile and got into the car, Mina following through.

*******

"Elsa?" Ms. Bennett called out from the corner of the kitchen, where she sat supervising the activities going on in the kitchen.

Since Mina and I returned from the market, we have had no rest. It's draining. I didn't think being a maid could be this challenging.

"Kindly take this tray to the dining hall." She said and pointed at a tray filled with glasses and a mug of orange juice.

I nodded and did as I was told.

All the kitchen staff set the dining hall ready, and a few of the maids were ordered to wait around, I included.

One by one, Alpha Nathan, Luna Isabella, and Rue trooped into the hall, each commanding an aura of dominance. The sight of them inked something in me, and I wished the ground would open and swallow them.

No word could describe how much I hate each soul sitting on that table.

"You!" Rue turned to me with a frown. "Pass me the salt." She ordered sharply, which made me cringe.

I passed the salt and walked back to my position. Looking up, I found Alpha's stare on me, like he was judging me, but there was something different behind his icy glare. There wasn't hatred, anger, or even malice, but rather curiosity. It made me shiver.

Alpha Nathan cleared his throat. "Elsa, help me with the salt as well."

"Yes Alpha." I replied and stepped up to the table, took the sait, and placed it in front of him before I retreated.

Afterwards, the dinner hall went silent as they dived into their meal.

Half an hour later, they were through with their dinner.

After we cleared the table, I walked back to my room, ready to go to bed.

Slamming the door closed, I reached for the jar of water and poured myself some water, then sat in the corner of the room and reminisced over my day and how I couldn't wait to get this job done.

"It's just a matter of time; every one of you will pay." I mumbled and finished the water in a gulp. I pushed the glass away, and suddenly, like an electric shock, my body went up in flames. My skin was tingling and itching, and I began to see flashes of white light.

The next thing I knew, I was lying flat on the floor, and my eyes were open wide. I heard screams and yells echoing in my ears, and then everything went dark.
