*Keera*

I avoided Lexi's eyes as I packed up the things I was going to need while working my ass off to help those people. Lexi and I had bonded after working together on a couple of assignments and it seemed our bond was about to become even tighter seeing as we were about to work on yet another assignment together. We'd gone out for drinks to celebrate the success of our mission a few months back and to explain my disdain for werewolves I'd given her a summarized version of my relationship with Ginny as well as a bunch of other things that had happened in my life.

Because of those people.

She knew enough to know that I wasn't happy about being sent there Especially with the fact that Ginny and I had never resolved our falling out and I completely despised her cold and arrogant twin brother. Even after six years I was finding it extremely hard to get over the fact that our entire friendship had been built on such a huge lie. She had watched me get bullied by her kind on several occasions, watched me talk down on them even. And not once had she let me know that she was also one of them.

Maybe even worse because I had no idea how she had been able to stomach lying to my face every single time.

Our phones beeped simultaneously and Lexi moved to take hers out of her pockets while I walked to the bed to grab mine. It was a reminder from Kathryn, our bioengineer slash tech chick, reminding us of the briefing I had fixed for the team later in the day. I'd almost forgotten about it. I threw my phone gently back on the bed and went back to taking clothes out of my wardrobe.

"So. . ." Lexi began slowly and I mentally facepalmed. I should have known she was going to bring it up. I took a black t-shirt out of my wardrobe and folded it neatly into my duffel bag. I heard crackling behind me as she ripped open the bag of chips she'd come with and began digging into them. "What's your plan to survive living in their territory?" She asked bluntly. "Especially when you're going to be in such close proximity with the dreaded duo."

I threw the clothes in my hands on the bed, pinching the bridge of my nose. I'd been asking myself the exact question. Things were going to be extremely awkward as it was and I sure as hell didn't need it to be even more awkward because what exactly had that been about yesterday? I'd seen Grayson and had been resentful for all of about a second before the resentment had melted to. . . something else.

I didn't remember him being so attractive and good looking. His dark hair had gotten even darker, his jawline had looked so sharp I could have sworn they could cut diamonds. Even his domineering and arrogant persona had somehow contributed in making him appear so. . . tempting. The only thing that hadn't changed had been the hard look in those dark as night eyes of his. If anything, the way he looked at me had gotten even colder than I remembered and it was that thought that had snapped me out of my trance.

Finding anything about him intriguing was completely out of the question.

He had humiliated me at our graduation party in front of a good number of people. Blaming me for Ginny's change in attitude like she was some two year old I could easily order around and not a full grown teenager. I shook my head, dispelling the memories of that night. I didn't want to think about it. Ever. I shrugged my shoulders, dragging my mind to the present. "I have no idea yet." I answered truthfully. "I guess I'll just have to stay clear of them as much as I can until our work is done and I can hull my ass back here."

Lexi scanned my face, chewing her chips a little too loudly. I held her gaze, knowing she was trying to get some kind of reaction out of me. "Stay clear, huh?" She repeated. "Might be kind of difficult with you living in Grayson's house and all." She said on a low whistle. "And I could already pick up that you both clearly hated each other."

I shot her a dry look and went back to folding. "We don't have to like each other for us to be able to work together." I informed her, walking into my bathroom and picking up my toiletries. We still had a day left before we had to move to Grayson's pack but I wanted to make sure that I left nothing that I was going to need. The last thing I needed was asking for help concerning something that wasn't about the task. "As long as we're civil with each other, I expect that things should go fine."

I wasn't interested in getting to know any of them.

"Huh." She said simply, and I could tell she was going to drop the topic for now. Only now, I didn't think I wanted her to. I wanted her to explain exactly what she meant by 'huh'. Except I wasn't sure I had it in me to ask so I just let it slide. "I'm going to pop open a bottle of wine." She rode to her feet, taking her half empty bag of chips with her. " I think we should make a toast to this mission."

"I'm not sure that there's anything to toast-"

She was already out the door before I could finish my sentence.

"So the only solid thing we know for sure is that there's a werewolf serial killer on the loose," Kathryn said from where she sat. She had a tablet in her hand, her hair tied neatly in a ponytail. It was just only a shade or two lighter than Josie's. I gave her a nod in affirmation, drumming my fingers lightly on the conference table. "That's not nearly enough information." She murmured and I couldn't agree more.

We all sat in silence for a few beats, studying the images of the killer's victims displayed on the screen. Exactly sixteen deaths within two weeks. I shifted my attention to Josie, knowing if anyone could get us started it would be her. I'd known for all about a day and I already knew that she was intuitive and watchful.

"It's very strange, don't you guys think?" She said, causing the rest of the team to drag their attention away from the screen. She was trailing her forefinger down her chin, her eyebrows drawn together in thought. "The deaths are so. . .random." She finally completed. "It's like this guy has no MO. Their age differences are extremely wide. Same as their height differences, their ranks in the pack, their gender and even down to their build." She said listing things off. " It's almost like. . .the killer was trying to test if. . .he could take down anybody he wanted to."

Take down anybody he wanted to.

I fixed my attention back on the screen, this time with Josie's theory in mind. I could already see how that could be possible. The killer was probably trying to make sure whatever it was he was doing to finish them off could work for anyone. There was no time or cause of death stated on any of the victim's files but that was because they couldn't let just anyone run an autopsy on the victims. It was going to be one of the first things we'd have to see if we were ever going to stand a chance at finding the killer.

"Think it's a werewolf?" Kathryn asked her, wanting to know.

Josie lifted her shoulders in a shrug, twisting her lips to the side as she considered the question. "Maybe, maybe not." She responded vaguely. "I think we'd have to at least figure out the times and causes or cause of death first before knowing if the killer was werewolf or not." I nodded in agreement. Right now nothing was certain.

And no one could be trusted.

"Think it could be more than one person involved?" Joe asked, scratching his bald head. I pondered on the question for a little bit. I mean, it was possible that it was just one person behind the killings. But I also couldn't rule out the fact there could be more than one person involved. It would explain why they hadn't found a clue yet.

"I don't see why not." I replied. "Anyway," I started wanting to conclude the meeting since we'd been on it for quite a few hours. "Our first line of action would be to get autopsies done on all eighteen of the victims." I informed them. "Lexi and I should be able to handle that since we also identify as forensic pathologists. We both got a second degree in forensic pathology."

I clapped my hands together. "So while Lexi and I are working on getting the autopsies done, Josie and Kathryn, I'll need you guys to talk to the victims' families. Everything we need to know about them is in this file." I stated, distributing a second blue file to all of them. Just in case. "See if there's anything you can find. Their whereabouts especially, because the killer had to be picking them off from somewhere."

"Copy that boss," Josie replied, already flipping through the files. "It's going to be a whole lot of work but we'll give it our best. We'll get as much information as we can, check if maybe there's a common enemy, follow leads." She gave me a little salute. "Whatever we'd be doing we'd definitely be letting you know." She said.

I gave her a warm smile. I already knew I wasn't going to have any problems working with her. Or any of them for that matter. They were all nice people. Pushing my hair behind my ear, I split my attention between Kathryn and her. "That's wonderful." I told her. "But I also think we should all be involved with that at some point. It might help if we're all able to get a feel of the victims' families and friends. It would be easier to detect who's lying and who's not." I explained.

When I realized neither of them had any problem with it, I continued. "Josie, I'll need you to come up with some kind of timetable. You and Kathryn do most of the visits but see if you can also try to get the rest of us to go with you every now and then."

"I'll see to it." She responded.

I nodded at her and then turned my attention to Joe. "I think I'll need you to just lay low for a while, maybe get in touch with the pack warriors and see how tight their security is." I informed the bald man. Trevor had informed me that he'd finally retired from work only weeks ago to spend some time with his grandkids after his line of work had kept him away from family for so long. "I hate that you're supposed to be enjoying your retirement right now but maybe you can also see what the werewolves are up to in general. See if you can get the scoop on what's going on in the pack and if there are any people we could trust among them."

Joe smiled, waving his hands to indicate that his being here was no issue. "I have no problem with that," He said with a laugh. "I'd only be making use of my toys when necessary. Other than that, I'll help them tighten the pack's security and be your eyes and ears." I smiled at him, grateful that he'd agreed to it and even seemed to be looking forward to getting in touch with those people. It was definitely nice that they weren't as irritated by them as I was. We went over a few more details and a few minutes later, the meeting had come to an end and the team decided to go out for drinks.

I decided it was time to finally pay a long overdue visit to the SPA.

*Grayson*I ended the call and resisted the urge to throw my phone against the wall. I'd tried my best to remain calm while I'd been on the phone with Trevor but I'd been seconds away from howling like a true beast. The entire arrangement was getting too intense already without emphasizing the fact that I needed to watch out for Keera. I wondered how the rest of the team were going to feel if they knew most of his concerns were about his precious, Keera. The headstrong stubborn woman. Who the goddess had also apparently decided was my mate.I should have known after being without a mate for so long that the goddess didn't want me with one. Because I couldn't see the reason she had picked Keera out of the thousands of humans to be the one made for me. She had to be well aware. that Keera was never given up being human no matter what. And certainly not for someone she completely despised. Which was. absolutely fine by me, anyway. I wasn't interested in being with her for the rest of my

*Keera*"Good thing you never actually got that puppy," Lexi said from her spot at the door as I rolled the last of my suitcases down the stairs. I held a tight grip on the handle, a slight frown on my face as I walked to add the suitcase to the rest we had already gotten down the stairs. She wasn't wrong though, I thought to myself. I'd decided just three days ago that I was going to get myself a puppy from a shelter a few blocks away from my apartment building. And then the new mission happened. I couldn't even imagine having to leave her all by herself if I'd gone through with my plan. I was at work way too often for me to get friendly with the neighbors. "I guess you're right." I finally replied, raising my shoulder. I let my gaze move around the house, trying to get one last mental picture before we left. Lexi was already taking the suitcases and duffel bags out the door as I turned off the lights and turned on the alarm. I didn't know how long I was going to be away for but I k

*Grayson*She had no right looking nearly as good as she did. Her red hair was in a ponytail. She had on black tights, a white shirt, a black jacket tied around her waist and black ankle boots. She looked more badass than a scientist had any business looking. And it was doing a lot of things to my wolf. Not me, of course. I didn't think she was ever capable of affecting me. Just my wolf. I already knew how rebellious and stubborn she could get beneath that cool exterior of hers. She halted her movements at my words, turning to face me with a cold look in her eyes. Yes, princess. I'm not about to make any of this easy for you. Her brown eyes flashed a warning at me. One I was very well going to ignore. I leaned against the wall, crossing my arms over my chest as I waited for her reply. "There was no need for him to know." She finally spat.My brows rose as I huffed, moving my head from side to side. "It's okay to keep things to yourself but then it becomes a problem when someone else

*Keera*Breathe, just breathe.I let my eyelids drift shut as I tried to mentally count to ten. Nope. Nothing was working. "With who?" I finally repeated, extremely proud when my voice came out sounding way calmer than I felt. Grayson dug his hands into his pockets, looking like he was waiting for a child to get over their tantrum. "What do you mean I'm staying upstairs with you?" I asked again, my voice sounding even calmer. There was no way I was giving him the reaction he was expecting. Thankfully, Elena had the sense to excuse us, saying that she had to get home and get a few things done. I managed to murmur my thanks to her amidst my growing annoyance. As Grayson walked her to the door I wondered if this was going to be a constant emotion for as long as I was here. This anger and irritation. The door closed with a soft click and soon enough Grayson was in my line of sight. He stalked across the room calmly, all six and half muscled inches of him. I crossed my arms over my ches

*Grayson*I turned again, like I'd been doing for the past four hours, this time lying on my right side. It was no wonder that sleep had eluded me. Having my pack members killed off like chickens and not being able to do anything about it was beginning to mess with my head, my wolf and my sleep. And then there was the fact that I'd finally found the one person that was supposed to help me get through my rough days, and she happened to be the most insufferable human being I had ever met. Literally. Who was currently sleeping just a few feet away from me.I let out an irritated sigh and turned, facing the other side. I'd let my curiosity get the better of me today when I'd walked downstairs and into the kitchen pretending to get something to eat. There was a kitchen on this floor, smaller than the one downstairs, but a kitchen nonetheless. I hadn't let Keera know about it because I hadn't been prepared for her to invade that part of the house yet. Which I somehow knew was exactly what

*Keera*"Gotta admit," Lexi said in awe as we looked around the lab. She turned to face me, an impressed look on her face. "They did a pretty good job." I waved my hand dismissively even though I silently agreed with her. The lab was definitely more than what I'd been expecting. I took a look around as we stepped further inside. I was certain that they'd gotten almost every equipment that we'd asked for. I touched the counters with my forefinger, feeling for dust and discovering none.Okay, I was really impressed.Lexi turned on the lights, illuminating the room even more than it already had been. I walked around the room, noting that they had provided the swabs, lab coats, head rest, autopsy table and blades that we'd asked for. I walked around the counter to where Lexi stood in front of a small cupboard. We pulled out the drawers and found goggles, dissection kits, gloves, specimen and evidence jars, envelopes, packets and a bunch of other stuff. There were lab coats hanging on a me

*Grayson*"She was a complete mess when we first found her," Nyx stated as we entered the house. Ria and I had been on patrol with a few of the pack warriors when we'd gotten a call that there was some kind of situation down at Tala's house. It turned out that her mother had almost driven a wooden stake through her heart and killed herself. I frowned as Nyx closed the door behind us before coming to walk us to where the woman sat on the couch, tears streaming down her eyes.I felt my heart drop to the pit of my stomach as my wolf howled inside of me.It was just like I was reliving that morning all over again. We'd gone to inform her that we'd discovered her daughter in an alley and that she was no longer with us. Sarah and Will had been so distraught that morning and I could vividly remember that Sarah had been thrashing and screaming for almost the entire day. Ginny had stayed with her for a few days before she'd calmed down.I pulled a seat close and sat down directly across from S

*Keera*I should have been scared. Any human in their right senses would have been scared, especially when his eyes had outrightly flashed gold, his wolf threatening to take over. Luckily, I wasn't any human. Grayson had another thing coming if he thought he could make me bend to his every will. I was more than ready to face his wolf if I absolutely had to. He had no right dishing out orders like I was some lowly member of his pack he could command. "Why are you so bent on acting stubborn?" He asked, sounding a lot like he really wanted to know. I twisted in his grip, trying to free myself from him. Rather than let go of me, he raised my other arm above my head with his free hand and held my wrists even more firmly. "What on earth gives you that much courage?" I barely stopped myself from cursing at him.I took a calming breath for the thousandth time since I met this insufferable man. There was no use struggling and trying to get out of his grip on my own. Even I knew that I was no

*Keera*Our symbol was beautiful; an image of the moon goddess's face, with complex and finely detailed patterns and vines growing out of her hair. I knew enough about werewolves to know it was a sign of the goddess's approval. We stepped out of the glass house, my body still humming from our passionate union. I felt deliciously spent, my knees threatening to give out beneath me. Grayson took my hand in his, his fingers intertwining with mine as we walked up to Ryan and then faced the pack. The symbol on our skin, a dark pigmentation resembling a tattoo, seemed to glow in the moonlight. I felt my face heat up as I met the pack member’s gazes, realizing they had heard my screams of pleasure. Their eyes sparkled with amusement, and I drifted my attention elsewhere, my cheeks burning with embarrassment. We stepped a bit forward and presented ourselves firstly to the council before the pack members gathered around, eager to see the symbol for themselves. Ryan was in control of the crowd

*Grayson *Ginny placed a gentle hand on my arm, her voice soft. "Grayson, she'll be okay. Dahlia knows what she's doing." I continued pacing outside Keera's bedroom door, anxiety threatening to unalive me. Dahlia had been attending to Keera for what felt like an eternity. The turning process was always unpredictable, what if I'd made a terrible mistake? Nyx handed me a bottle of water but I rejected it, not feeling the least bit thirty. Different thoughts warred in my mind. I should have been watching her more closely, but instead I'd been carried away by the pleasure that came with activating the mate bond. Thankfully, Dahlia stepped out of the room then, a warm smile on her face. "She's okay." She announced, talking about Keera. "The turning was successful. I've tested her blood, and the werewolf gene has taken hold." My heart sank with relief, and my entire body instantly relaxed. Nyx released a relieved sigh, holding on to Ginny. Dahlia's eyes lifted to mine. "We'll leave you a

*Keera*His eyes were twin blazes of fury.He angrily shoved my hands away. "What makes you think you can just walk back in here and expect everything to be okay?" His voice was laced with venom, each word dripping with hurt and betrayal. The gaping hole in my head chest turned into a whirlwind that threatened to drown my whole. He'd never been this mad at me. Not even when he'd lashed out and humiliated me at my graduation party. I wiped my face with the back of my palm but the tears wouldn't stop coming.Fear threatened to cripple me.Fear that he was completely and truly done with me. He wanted to know why I came back? "I realized I love you," I confessed, my voice trembling. "I love you more than anything, and I was wrong to leave. I was wrong to give up on us." I held his unyielding gaze, praying to whatever power above for him to take me back. He ran his hand through his hair, taking a step back like my words had hit him like a ton of bricks. *Grayson*My room was the messiest it had ever been in years, my bed strewn with travel brochures and maps. After spending hours surfing the internet and jumping from one website to the other, I'd finally picked a new destination for myself. The thought of starting a new life away from all the troubles that came with ruling the pack had seemed like the best decision to take. My brows furrowed when my phone began buzzing on the nightstand.I picked it up to see a text from Ryan, requesting to meet with me in my study. I pushed away from the bed, already knowing what he wanted to talk about. I silently hoped he had finally seen reason with me. I left the map open on my bed, marking the page with a bookmark, and made my way downstairs to the study. Ryan was standing by the window when I got in, his back to me. He turned to face me when he heard the creak of the door."Hey," He greeted lightly. I closed the door and stepped further inside the room. He pinched the bridge of his nose, stari

*Keera*"Grayson, I-I'm. . .""Just say the words for goodness's sake Keera!"I jerked awake, my hand immediately flying to my chest. I'd had the weirdest dream ever. Grayson had been angrily chasing me around the woods and when he'd finally caught up with me, he'd threatened to stake me if I didn't confess the truth about my feelings. My alarm went off just then and I pushed the covers off my body, getting to my feet.I wore my flipflops, walking into the bathroom to prepare for another long day. I could barely explain how I'd been managing to get by these passed few days. I'd lost the enthusiasm to do anything, including prepare my own food. It's been a week since I'd left the pack and I was yet to receive a text from Grayson. Everyday I found more reasons why he should have already reached out. He'd said he was in love with me, hadn't he? I was out of the bathroom in a few minutes and out of the house half an hour later, my bag resting on my shoulder. I walked by the sidewalk, not

*Grayson*A soft breeze danced around the woods, the sound of rustling leaves the only noise I could make out. It had been six days since Keera had left the pack with her team. Six days since I'd forced myself to accept the harsh truth; that she wasn't coming back. Not for me to end our mate bond, and certainly not for me to turn her. I'd spent the first two days of her absence, hanging on to the hope that my phone would ring from a call from her, or beep from a text that she'd sent. I'd wished for the goddess to make her realize the depth of her feelings for me.I'd done everything but accept that this was the end for us.But then two days had turned into four and four had turned into six and I'd had to come to terms with the fact that we were truly and completely over. If she wanted to, she would have been back to the pack by now. The fact that she hadn't returned and she hadn't bothered reaching out spoke volumes. I could only imagine the peace and clarity she'd gotten from spendin

  • His Forbidden Human Mate   Chapter 69

*Keera*I spent the first two days after I arrived back home unpacking my stuff and trying to shake off the feeling of nostalgia and emptiness that lingered inside me. I'd thought I would be more excited to be back home, surrounded by familiar faces and familiar places, but instead, the city felt hollow, and my apartment felt like a stranger's. The silence was almost depressing and I couldn't help but think of Grayson, of the pack, and of the life I'd been getting used to, which I'd left behind. It had been two days but the usually simple task of unpacking had felt so Herculean that I wasn't done with it yet. As I put away the last of my belongings, my mind began to wander. I couldn't help but feel a familiar sense of regret settle deep in my stomach. I should have let Grayson know how I really felt about him when I got the chance. He'd told me he loved me for the second time, and looking back now, I knew I should have said something. The kiss we'd shared before I left still lingered

*Grayson*I leaned against my bed stand, Ryan and Ginny standing only a few meters away from me. Keera and the rest of the team were preparing to leave, and I knew what Ryan and Ginny had come to talk to me about even though they both hadn't said anything yet. My conversation with Keera yesterday had been living rent free in my head for the past eighteen hours. Ryan, ever the voice of reason, spoke up first. "Grayson, you know what needs to be done." He said softly, sharing a worried look with his mate. "You can't mate with someone else if Keera's still considered your mate."I nodded, completely understanding the pack's laws. Ginny's voice was even softer when she spoke. "You have to reject Keera publicly." Major events like banishment, inauguration and rejection were, as a law, to be done publicly with the pack members as witnesses for them to have any effect. I rubbed my temples, feeling the tension build. I hadn't been joking when I'd let Keera know I had to reject her before she

I couldn't help the feeling of self loathe that coursed through me. I was the most heartless person ever. He'd confessed his love for me and I'd asked him to leave my room. I slammed my hands on the dressing table, regret eating away at me. Why hadn't I let him know I was madly in love with him too? Maybe even more than he was with me. I ran my hands through my hair, sighing dejectedly. Was I even doing the right thing anymore? It seemed like the lines between right and wrong had suddenly blurred. My mind had been made up in the beginning; finish up with the case and go home. I didn't belong here, no matter what my feelings for Grayson were. We were species apart, our lives were different. I didn't want him to leave his pack because of me. He was born to be a leader and taking him away from his purpose would only make him resen
