Emma stepped into the office, her skin still tingling from the Mediterranean sun, her mind struggling to switch from holiday mode. The ten days she had spent backpacking through Europe with her five-year-old son had been a much-needed escape from the humdrum of her daily life, a break Henry and Hazel had practically forced upon her as she had not met her son since she had put him in a boarding school.

Now, she was back, carrying a large bag filled with souvenirs for her colleagues, ready to settle into her usual routine. She had lots of gifts in her car for Henery and Hazel, the couple who were the only couple she cared for now. And who helped her when she was most vulnerable.

They gave her a job and helped her raise her son till now. She was extremely lucky to have them and missed them a lot on the vacation

But as she walked through the familiar corridors of HW Financial Consultancy, something felt amiss. The office, typically abuzz with activity, was eerily quiet. Her colleagues, usually full of chatter, wore expressions of unease.

"What's with all the long faces?" Emma called out, attempting to lighten the mood. "Surely there hasn't been a catastrophe while I've been away?"

Jane, her junior assistant, looked up from her desk, her face pale. "You haven’t heard?"

"Heard what?" Emma's honey-brown eyes narrowed slightly.

"About the takeover... and Mr. Wilson," Jane stammered. Emma looked around, expecting someone else to chime in, but the rest of the office remained silent, clearly leaving Jane to deliver the news.

"The takeover? I’m completely in the dark here. And what’s Mr Wilson got to do with it?" Emma’s voice was edged with impatience.

"He doesn’t… not anymore," Jane replied hesitantly. "Mr Wilson’s gone—retired early, or something like that. It all happened last Friday when the takeover was announced. He left the same day."

Emma’s heart sank. Henry Wilson had been more than just her boss; he was her mentor, the one who had given her a chance when she had nowhere else to turn.

"I’ve been out of reach, staying with a friend overnight…" Emma’s voice trailed off as the weight of Jane’s words began to sink in. "Are you telling me Henry was… pushed out?" she asked, her voice faint.

Jane nodded, her expression sympathetic. "The new owner insisted."

" What the hell? How can this new owner do that to him? Who is this man?"

" His name is Ryan Taylor." She replied.

Emma froze, the blood draining from her face. "Ryan Taylor?" The name was a ghost from her past, a specter she had never expected to encounter again.

A shudder went through her...

Jane nodded again. "Yes, do you know him?"

"N...no, of course not," Emma lied, her voice barely steady. "I just remember reading about him somewhere… that’s all."

"Really? Care to share what you’ve read about me, Miss…?"

The deep, resonant voice behind her made Emma’s blood run cold. She turned slowly, her heart pounding in her chest. Standing in the doorway was Ryan Taylor, every bit as imposing as she remembered.

Tall, dark-haired, impeccably dressed, he was the very picture of wealth and power. His presence dominated the room, just as it had always dominated her thoughts.

"Miss Jones," Jane quickly supplied.

"Miss Jones, is it?" Ryan’s voice was deceptively calm. "And your full name, if you please?"

"Emma Jones," Jane answered for her, seemingly oblivious to the tension in the air. "She’s our assistant financial consultant, took over after Mr Wilson."

"Ah, I see." Ryan’s gaze fixed on Emma, his eyes cool and assessing. "So, Miss Jones, you’ve finally decided to grace us with your presence—four days late, I might add."

"I don’t owe you any explanations," Emma shot back, her temper flaring.

"On the contrary," Ryan’s tone turned icy. "You’re my employee now, and I have every right to know where you’ve been."

Jane, sensing the tension, interjected nervously. "She’s been on leave for ten days, sir… Mr Wilson insisted she take a break."

Emma looked tense as she didn't want Jane to say anything about her.

"Ten days?" Ryan’s eyebrow arched. "Quite the extended leave. I wonder what Mr. Wilson was thinking, granting such a favor to his assistant during a crucial period."

"Mr Taylor!" Emma glared at him, taking a step back as he moved closer. She was more than tense but tried to show that she was just so annoyed.

"Answer me," Ryan demanded, but Emma held her ground, her silence a defiant challenge.

"Miss… perhaps you could enlighten me?" Ryan turned his gaze to Jane, who gulped nervously.

"She’s one of our best consultants," Jane began, but Emma cut her off.

"That’s enough, Jane. Get back to work," Emma ordered sharply. She left immediately.

"Nice to see you again, Emma," Ryan said, his eyes locking onto hers.

For a moment, Emma was speechless. She was looking at the man who fathered her child. Her son resembled his dad so much that she could never forget his face even if she wanted it so desperately. But her son was so cute and this man standing here was a devil.

Memories of their tumultuous relationship surged back—passion, betrayal, and the desperate flight that had led her to this very place. She had loved him once, loved him so deeply it had nearly destroyed her. But that love had long since curdled into something bitter.

"Ryan," she managed, her voice trembling. "What are you doing here?"

"I own the company now," he replied smoothly as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "And I’ve taken over as managing director."

The ground seemed to shift beneath Emma’s feet. "Why?"

"Miss Jones, we need to talk," Ryan said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "In private. Come to my office."

"I’m sorry, Mr Taylor, but I’m not your employee. I worked for Henry, and if he’s gone, then so am I. You’ll have my resignation on your desk before the end of the day."

"I’m afraid that’s not possible," Ryan replied coolly. "I bought this firm, along with all its assets and liabilities. You, Miss Jones, are one of those assets." He said. She was still thinking what to say.

"Come with me, or I’ll have to escort you myself," he added, his voice lowering to a menacing whisper. "I’d hate to make a scene in front of your colleagues."

His words left her with no choice. The office had gone silent, all eyes on them. Reluctantly, she let him lead her to what had once been Henry’s office. The door closed behind them with a soft click, shutting out the prying eyes.

"Nice to see you again, Emma," Ryan said, his eyes roaming over her as if appraising her anew.

Emma pulled away, her anger flaring. "What on earth do you think you’re doing, Ryan?"

"I’m trying to have a civil conversation," Ryan replied, his voice grim. "We have unfinished business, you and I."

"There’s nothing to discuss," Emma retorted, her voice sharp. "Not now, not ever."

"You think that?" His voice was quiet, but there was an edge to it that made her wary.

"Yes, I do. How can you even ask me that after everything you’ve done? You lied to me, Ryan. You used me! You mistreated me." The words burst out, raw and unfiltered.

"And you ran away without giving me a chance to explain," he countered, his voice hardening again. "Do you think that was fair?"

"You ran away without giving me a chance to explain," he countered, his voice hardening again. "Do you think that was fair?" He asked looking into her eyes. Fair? The word echoed in her mind, the memories too painful to revisit. "This isn’t about fairness. It’s about survival. And right now, I don’t want to work here anymore.""I had my reasons," Ryan said, his eyes narrowing. "But we’re not here to relive the past. We’re here to discuss the future of this company."She was going to say that she was not interested in him or his company when her phone started buzzing. She looked at the screen and was stunned to see James calling her. Oh, no! He can't call me at this time. She thought. She could not talk to her son in front of Ryan. She was even scared to think what he might do if he came to know that they had a child together. He would probably kill her... She disconnected the call. She was very tense but could not let him see that. So she took a deep breath, trying to calm the st

Emma's POV Once I got into my small car, I sat for a whole minute, just breathing deeply, What was Ryan doing here? And how on earth did he find out where I was? Does he know about James? No, of course not, or he would have asked me. He must not come to know about him. I shook my head and called James. " Hey, honey! " " Mom, why were you not picking up the call? " " I am sorry, I was in a meeting. " " I am missing you, Mom. I do not want to stay here, please keep me with you. I can study there. " " I am too busy to take care of, my son. But soon, I will do something about it. " I lied to him. I might have thought of getting him back here, but now that Ryan was here and I quit the job, I would have to find a job, or I would not be able to pay his fees. Under no situation could I bring him back here as Ryan would not leave me alone for some time. Trying to steady my trembling hands enough to start the engine. My entire world had just been upended, and the shockwaves were stil

Emma's POV I would have to move to another city and change my profession again. I was still earning a lot from fashion designing, working from here with the help of my reliable and talented assistant, my team, and my PA. I was sending them designs, and they were making and marketing them under my brand, but I wasn’t there. So, financial issues didn’t worry me.Only five minutes had passed when the doorbell rang.Who could it be?I dragged myself out of bed and went to open the door. But as soon as I did, I was shocked to the core.Ryan??“Hey, beautiful,” he greeted me with that familiar, infuriating smirk.“What are you doing here? How did you get my address?” I demanded.“Oh, come on, do I need to answer that?”“From office records?” I answered my question. He simply smirked.“What are you here for?” I asked, though I already knew.He looked me over from head to toe, making me acutely aware of the very short crop top and shorts I was wearing. His eyes darkened when they met mine ag

Ryan's POV15 days ago ...The water in the club’s pool was cool against my skin, a welcome reprieve from the heat of the day and the fire that always seemed to smolder inside me. Each stroke through the water was an attempt to drown out the frustration that had become a constant companion these past six years. But no matter how hard I pushed myself, she was always there in my mind—her laughter, her smile, and the haunting memory of the day she walked out of my life, believing the worst of me.I reached the end of the pool and paused, my breath heavy but steady. I was about to push off for another lap when I noticed someone approaching. Daniel. The sight of him was enough to sour the calm I’d been trying to find. I’ve never liked the man. He had a way of twisting every situation to his advantage, his smirk always suggesting he knew something you didn’t.Ignoring him, I turned back to the water, hoping he’d get the message and leave. But then he spoke, his voice as slippery as the man

Ryan's POVThe deal was done within the hour. The firm was mine, and with it, the opportunity I’d been waiting for. All that was left was to find her, to confront her, to make her understand that she couldn’t just walk away from what we had.But as I sat in the office that was now mine, the reality of what I was about to do started to sink in. She left because she thought I’d lied to her, used her to get what I wanted. And in a way, she was right. I hadn’t been completely honest with her about who I was, about the life I led. But I never meant to hurt her. I never wanted her to leave. And I agree that she was hurt, but she should have stayed and confronted me; I would have explained why I did that. I had a very valid reason for doing so, but why did she leave without saying anything when I was not there and had gone to work for a few days? When I came back after 15 days, I was shocked to see that it was gone, vanished in the thin air. No one knew anything about her, not even George

Emma's POVIt had been an hour since he came and I sent him back, but he was still there in my mind. I tried to sleep but could not as my past incidents kept coming and going in front of me like some shots of a movie. All those parts that I wanted to forget desperately... I recalled quite vividly how and when he came into my life and changed it forever. A little more than 6 years back... NoI was deeply immersed in the final touches of my latest collection when a gentle knock interrupted my concentration. With a sigh, I looked up, momentarily irritated at the intrusion, only to find Tina, one of my old friends, standing at the door with her trademark grin.“Emma! I hope I’m not interrupting,” she said, stepping inside without waiting for my reply.A smile crept onto my face despite myself. “Tina, it’s been ages! It’s great to see you.”She chuckled, making herself comfortable in one of the armchairs across from my desk. “You’ve become quite the elusive figure lately. We hardly see y

Emma's POV Lily poked her head in, concern etched on her face. “Are you alright?”I forced a smile, taking the glass of cold water she offered. “Thank God she gave in, but she won’t let this go. I need to find a way out of this.”“Why don’t you just meet the man?” Lily suggested cautiously.“Because I don’t want complications in my life. Things are finally starting to get sorted.”Lily didn’t push the subject further, but I could see the unspoken questions in her eyes. Why was I so against the idea of marriage? It wasn’t something I openly discussed, not with anyone. They wouldn’t understand. They couldn’t possibly grasp the reality I had grown up in.Well, I didn't want to think all that at the moment. But I could not help it with my mom after my life. Yes, she was right, I even avoided the topic of marriage and avoided meeting men, for the most part. They were chauvinistic, arrogant, and selfish. My father was the prime example, but he was far from the only oneI had seen it in ot

We missed you, darling.”I hugged her back, feeling a mix of joy and unease. “I missed you too. But why the sudden visit?”“To remind you that you’ve been working too hard and it’s time to settle down,” Mom chimed in, her tone both affectionate and insistent.“Mom, please, not this again.” I rolled my eyes, but I knew from experience that she wouldn’t drop the subject so easily.“You may not like this discussion, but that doesn’t mean we can avoid it forever.”“Mom, can I tell her my news?” Eva interjected, clearly irritated by the direction the conversation was heading.“What news?” I asked, turning to my sister. She grinned and held out her left hand, showing off a dazzling diamond ring.“I’m engaged!” Eva exclaimed, her excitement palpable. For a moment, I stood there,

Emma's POV One month had passed since our island escape, and coming back to the life we’d built here felt different now—lighter somehow as if love had settled into every corner of our home. Ryan had slipped into our family life effortlessly, filling each day with small acts of tenderness that wove us closer together. For the first time in so long, I felt whole. But nothing could have prepared me for the morning. I realized my life was about to change once again. The signs were subtle at first—just an unusual fatigue, a lingering wave of dizziness now and then. I brushed it off as the after-effects of our busy schedules. But soon the signs became clearer, and I found myself looking down at a positive pregnancy test, a swirl of emotions overwhelming me. I sat there, staring at it, joy and disbelief intermingling. I was going to have another baby.Ryan came home later that evening, his face lighting up as he saw me. He wrapped me in his arms, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead. “Hey,

Emma's POV We headed back to our suite, but Ryan had one last surprise waiting for me. When we entered the room, the lights were dimmed, and the air was filled with the scent of jasmine and vanilla.A path of rose petals led to the bathroom, where a luxurious bubble bath had been drawn, candles flickering around the edges of the tub.“Ryan…” I gasped, turning to him with wide eyes. “Did you—?”He grinned, wrapping his arms around my waist and kissing my cheek. “I figured after a day like today, you deserved a little pampering.”My heart swelled with love for this man, who knew exactly how to make every moment special. He led me to the tub, helping me slip into the warm, fragrant water before joining me. The bubbles rose around us, and I leaned back against his chest, closing my eyes as his hands massaged my shoulders. We sat in comfortable silence for a while, the only sound of the gentle lapping of the water and the soft flicker of the candles. Emma's POV After several hours in the sky, we began our descent, and I noticed a glimmer of turquoise below, almost like a hidden jewel nestled in a sea of endless blue. As we got closer, I could make out an island ringed with pristine beaches, the sunlight casting golden highlights across the sand. My heart skipped a beat as I took in the scene—the untouched beauty of white sand, palm trees swaying gently, the promise of secluded beaches.“This is…all yours?” I asked, a sense of disbelief coloring my words. It felt almost unreal.Ryan laughed softly, wrapping an arm around me. “Not just mine. Ours. Consider this our private retreat. The thought of it—an entire island, untouched and serene, where we could simply be together—sent a thrill through me. Once we landed, a small team greeted us, but they quickly disappeared after helping us settle in. It was just the two of us, alone in paradise.Ryan wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me close against him. I leaned into his c

  • Chasing My Runaway Bride   Chapter 263

Emma's POV Once we were certain that Daniel and Evan were safely behind bars, I felt like I could finally exhale. It was surreal to think that the shadows of their crimes—murder, kidnapping, so many lives shattered—were now confined, unable to reach us. The damage, though, still lingered, especially in Eva’s life.Daniel’s conviction allowed her to obtain a swift divorce and full custody of their son, Danny. But while she had her freedom, she deserved a chance at happiness too.Eva had been through unimaginable hardship, and now, with a young son, Danny, to care for, her life was far from settled. Thankfully, the charges against Daniel made it relatively easy for her to get a divorce and secure sole custody of Danny. Still, she was young and had lost much; it wasn’t right for her to face the future on her own.Ryan, in his characteristic way of looking after people, was the first to offer support. It was Ryan who first suggested a way to help her move forward. He introduced her to on

Ryan's POV As the officers secured him in handcuffs and began reading him his rights, I turned to Emma. She was still trembling, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as though trying to shield herself from the horrors she’d just endured. Her eyes, red and puffy from tears, met mine, and I saw a mix of relief and determination there.“Ryan,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “There’s something you need to know.”I stepped closer, my hand brushing against hers in a gesture of comfort. “What is it?”She hesitated, glancing at James, who clung to my side, his small fingers gripping my shirt. I knelt, cupping his face gently.“It’s okay, buddy,” I murmured. “Everything’s going to be fine now.”I turned to one of the officers. “Can someone take my son outside? He doesn’t need to hear this.”An officer nodded, extending his hand toward James. “Hey, champ, why don’t you come with me? We’ve got some juice and snacks in the car.”James looked at me, uncertainty flickering in his wide

Ryan's POV With a swift kick, the door slammed open, the sound reverberating like a gunshot through the room. Evan spun around, startled but not surprised. He stood over Emma and James, both bound to chairs. My heart clenched as I took in their faces—pale but alive, their eyes widening in shock and relief at the sight of us.“Emma,” I murmured, my voice low but filled with urgency. “It’s alright. I’m here.”Relief seemed to flood through her, and she nearly collapsed in the chair as if she had been holding her breath, the tension finally breaking. But there was no time to rest. Evan was already recovering, his face twisted with rage.“You,” he spat, his voice dripping with hatred. “Always ruining everything.”“This ends now, Evan,” I said, “You’ve done enough.”Evan laughed, “Oh, you think you’re the hero now? After everything you took from me?”My jaw tightened, and my fists clenched at my sides. “I didn’t take anything from you, Evan. You did this to yourself.”Evan’s face twisted

Emma and James were out there somewhere—alone, scared, with that monster.Gritting my teeth, I swore I’d kill that man. Ryan's POV Then, the final revelation, the one that sent a chill through my veins. “Evan doesn’t just want to ruin you, Ryan,” Daniel said, his eyes glinting with perverse satisfaction. “He wants to be you. He’s been planning this for months. Changing his look, studying you—down to your bloody mannerisms. He’s got a way out, a clean record. No one would question it if he walked right back into your life, because no one would know.”The room fell silent, his words hanging in the air, heavier than anything I’d imagined. Evan planned to kill us, to eliminate every trace of my existence, and then live as me—he’d done everything necessary to erase his old life and assume mine, seamlessly. The realization gripped me like a vice. Emma and James were in the hands of a man who was not only ruthless but methodical, who wouldn’t hesitate to kill them just to ensure his twisted plan played out perfectly.
