"You ran away without giving me a chance to explain," he countered, his voice hardening again. "Do you think that was fair?" He asked looking into her eyes.
Fair? The word echoed in her mind, the memories too painful to revisit. "This isn’t about fairness. It’s about survival. And right now, I don’t want to work here anymore."
"I had my reasons," Ryan said, his eyes narrowing. "But we’re not here to relive the past. We’re here to discuss the future of this company."
She was going to say that she was not interested in him or his company when her phone started buzzing. She looked at the screen and was stunned to see James calling her.
Oh, no! He can't call me at this time. She thought. She could not talk to her son in front of Ryan.
She was even scared to think what he might do if he came to know that they had a child together.
He would probably kill her... She disconnected the call. She was very tense but could not let him see that.
So she took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm inside her. "Fine. Why did you take over HW Financial?" She owed it to Henery."I was looking for a new investment opportunity," Ryan said. "It’s a good business, but it needs new leadership to thrive."
"And by new leadership, you mean ousting Henry Wilson?" Emma challenged, her eyes flashing.
"Henry was a good man, but this firm needs fresh direction," Ryan replied evenly. "And I intend to keep most of the staff, including you."
Emma’s heart skipped a beat. "Including me?"
"Yes," Ryan said, his gaze locking onto hers. "Despite everything, I know you’re one of the best. I need someone like you on my team."
Emma felt a swirl of emotions—anger, confusion, and something she couldn’t quite name. "I’m not staying," she declared firmly. "I quit."
His expression hardened. "You can’t quit, Emma."
"And why not?" she demanded.
"Because your contract is still valid," Ryan said coolly. "You’re bound to this company and, by extension, to me."
"The management has changed," Emma argued, "which means my contract is null and void."
"Check with your solicitor," Ryan said, a cold smile playing on his lips. "I bought this firm with all its assets and liabilities. Your contract stands."
Emma’s hands clenched into fists. "You can’t force me to stay."
"I can, and I will," Ryan said, his voice like steel. "
"Then I’ll pay the penalty for breaking my contract," she retorted, her voice trembling with anger.
"I don’t want your money," Ryan said, his eyes boring into hers. "I want you."
"Sorry, but I’m not interested," she snapped.
"I’m trying to do this the right way, Emma," Ryan said, his voice softening slightly.
"The right way?"
"Yes, the right way," Ryan repeated, his tone firm. "I could have walked in here and fired half the staff without a second thought. But I didn’t. I want to make this transition as smooth as possible, and that includes keeping the best people in place. You’re one of those people, Emma."
" You can't treat Henery like this. "
" Why are you being so protective of him? He also forced you to take a vacation... What is going on between you? Are you, by any chance, interested in him? "
" Ryan! Stop it! " She was saying when her phone started ringing again. She looked at the screen and it was James again. She got very uncomfortable as Ryan was still standing near her. She disconnected the call again.
" Why should I? I have a right to know what is going on in your... " He was saying when the phone started ringing again.
Ryan got annoyed and cursed... " Who the hell is calling? " Her face became almost white; she didn't say anything but was about to disconnect when he saw the name flashing on her screen.
My lifeline...with a little heart following the words. He lost his temper all of a sudden.
" Who is it? "
" That's none of your business. "
" Show it to me. "
" No, you have no right to barge into my life like this and order me to do as you say. I don't care why you bought this company, I am quitting. " She pushed him.
" No, you are not. You vanished in thin air, back then. Not now. I will not let you go now. You belong to me. "
Emma asked, " No! What do you expect me to do, just pretend like none of it happened?"
Ryan took a step closer, his voice dropping to a softer tone. "I don’t expect you to forget, Emma. Neither can I. I have been looking for you ever since you left without saying a single word."
"Why were you looking for me? I left because I could not stand your company for a single minute."
" You were in love with me. "
" That's because I was stupid at that time, but I am grown up now. I don't want to be anywhere near you. I hate you, you are a liar, you lied to me manipulated me, how could you? I will never forgive you."
He came closer to her and cupped her face and she was rooted to the spot. He smirked and said. " You haven't changed. You still want me. "
" No! "
" Deny all you want but I can feel that your body craves mine."
" No! "
" Want me to prove it to you? "
" No, way! " She tried pushing him but he didn't even blink.
He smirked and bent his head a bit, and my heartbeat increased.
No!!
He pulled her in his arm with force and claimed her lips. She was shocked but pushed him. He smiled faintly but didn't release her.
" Leave me or so will shout. Everyone will be here in less than a minute." She said.
" Do it, it will be easier for me to announce to the world about our relationship. They need to know that Miss Jones is actually Emma Ryan Taylor. My wife. Then you will have to explain why you told them the wrong identity and the impression that you were still single. Why did you do that?? you wanted other men to approach you as you were young, beautiful, and unattached. No, my love, in case you have forgotten, you are my wife. And I am here to claim you back. "
" Will you shut up? I never wanted to get settled, and still, I made a mistake for once in trusting you, but I am not dumb enough to commit the same mistake again. Go back to where you came from, I don't want you in my life. I will not be around a liar like you. You manipulated me. I will never be with you again, get a divorce, and marry whoever you want. But just be clear that I don't want you."
" You want a divorce?? Why? Is there anyone else? "
" None of your business."
" Everything regarding you is my business. Tell me, is there someone in your life? Who was calling you? If there is any, I sweat, I will kill that bast***."
" I don't owe you any answers. Stay away from me." She said, pushed him away, and got out of the office before he could stop her.
Emma's POV Once I got into my small car, I sat for a whole minute, just breathing deeply, What was Ryan doing here? And how on earth did he find out where I was? Does he know about James? No, of course not, or he would have asked me. He must not come to know about him. I shook my head and called James. " Hey, honey! " " Mom, why were you not picking up the call? " " I am sorry, I was in a meeting. " " I am missing you, Mom. I do not want to stay here, please keep me with you. I can study there. " " I am too busy to take care of, my son. But soon, I will do something about it. " I lied to him. I might have thought of getting him back here, but now that Ryan was here and I quit the job, I would have to find a job, or I would not be able to pay his fees. Under no situation could I bring him back here as Ryan would not leave me alone for some time. Trying to steady my trembling hands enough to start the engine. My entire world had just been upended, and the shockwaves were stil
Emma's POV I would have to move to another city and change my profession again. I was still earning a lot from fashion designing, working from here with the help of my reliable and talented assistant, my team, and my PA. I was sending them designs, and they were making and marketing them under my brand, but I wasn’t there. So, financial issues didn’t worry me.Only five minutes had passed when the doorbell rang.Who could it be?I dragged myself out of bed and went to open the door. But as soon as I did, I was shocked to the core.Ryan??“Hey, beautiful,” he greeted me with that familiar, infuriating smirk.“What are you doing here? How did you get my address?” I demanded.“Oh, come on, do I need to answer that?”“From office records?” I answered my question. He simply smirked.“What are you here for?” I asked, though I already knew.He looked me over from head to toe, making me acutely aware of the very short crop top and shorts I was wearing. His eyes darkened when they met mine ag
Ryan's POV15 days ago ...The water in the club’s pool was cool against my skin, a welcome reprieve from the heat of the day and the fire that always seemed to smolder inside me. Each stroke through the water was an attempt to drown out the frustration that had become a constant companion these past six years. But no matter how hard I pushed myself, she was always there in my mind—her laughter, her smile, and the haunting memory of the day she walked out of my life, believing the worst of me.I reached the end of the pool and paused, my breath heavy but steady. I was about to push off for another lap when I noticed someone approaching. Daniel. The sight of him was enough to sour the calm I’d been trying to find. I’ve never liked the man. He had a way of twisting every situation to his advantage, his smirk always suggesting he knew something you didn’t.Ignoring him, I turned back to the water, hoping he’d get the message and leave. But then he spoke, his voice as slippery as the man
Ryan's POVThe deal was done within the hour. The firm was mine, and with it, the opportunity I’d been waiting for. All that was left was to find her, to confront her, to make her understand that she couldn’t just walk away from what we had.But as I sat in the office that was now mine, the reality of what I was about to do started to sink in. She left because she thought I’d lied to her, used her to get what I wanted. And in a way, she was right. I hadn’t been completely honest with her about who I was, about the life I led. But I never meant to hurt her. I never wanted her to leave. And I agree that she was hurt, but she should have stayed and confronted me; I would have explained why I did that. I had a very valid reason for doing so, but why did she leave without saying anything when I was not there and had gone to work for a few days? When I came back after 15 days, I was shocked to see that it was gone, vanished in the thin air. No one knew anything about her, not even George
Emma's POVIt had been an hour since he came and I sent him back, but he was still there in my mind. I tried to sleep but could not as my past incidents kept coming and going in front of me like some shots of a movie. All those parts that I wanted to forget desperately... I recalled quite vividly how and when he came into my life and changed it forever. A little more than 6 years back... NoI was deeply immersed in the final touches of my latest collection when a gentle knock interrupted my concentration. With a sigh, I looked up, momentarily irritated at the intrusion, only to find Tina, one of my old friends, standing at the door with her trademark grin.“Emma! I hope I’m not interrupting,” she said, stepping inside without waiting for my reply.A smile crept onto my face despite myself. “Tina, it’s been ages! It’s great to see you.”She chuckled, making herself comfortable in one of the armchairs across from my desk. “You’ve become quite the elusive figure lately. We hardly see y
Emma's POV Lily poked her head in, concern etched on her face. “Are you alright?”I forced a smile, taking the glass of cold water she offered. “Thank God she gave in, but she won’t let this go. I need to find a way out of this.”“Why don’t you just meet the man?” Lily suggested cautiously.“Because I don’t want complications in my life. Things are finally starting to get sorted.”Lily didn’t push the subject further, but I could see the unspoken questions in her eyes. Why was I so against the idea of marriage? It wasn’t something I openly discussed, not with anyone. They wouldn’t understand. They couldn’t possibly grasp the reality I had grown up in.Well, I didn't want to think all that at the moment. But I could not help it with my mom after my life. Yes, she was right, I even avoided the topic of marriage and avoided meeting men, for the most part. They were chauvinistic, arrogant, and selfish. My father was the prime example, but he was far from the only oneI had seen it in ot
Emma's POV“Mom! Eva? What are you doing here?” I asked, my voice filled with surprise as I spotted them at my office door.Eva rushed forward, arms outstretched, enveloping me in a tight embrace. “Isn’t it obvious? We missed you, darling.”I hugged her back, feeling a mix of joy and unease. “I missed you too. But why the sudden visit?”“To remind you that you’ve been working too hard and it’s time to settle down,” Mom chimed in, her tone both affectionate and insistent.“Mom, please, not this again.” I rolled my eyes, but I knew from experience that she wouldn’t drop the subject so easily.“You may not like this discussion, but that doesn’t mean we can avoid it forever.”“Mom, can I tell her my news?” Eva interjected, clearly irritated by the direction the conversation was heading.“What news?” I asked, turning to my sister. She grinned and held out her left hand, showing off a dazzling diamond ring.“I’m engaged!” Eva exclaimed, her excitement palpable. For a moment, I stood there,
Day of the exhibition.Emma's POV Everything was proceeding smoothly until I caught sight of Mum heading towards me, her eyes brimming with pride. My heart dropped like a stone. Not now… please, not now."Emma, darling, we're so proud of you!" Mum exclaimed, pulling me into one of her warm, enveloping hugs."Thanks, Mum," I managed to reply, forcing a smile to mask the uneasiness bubbling inside me."But I haven’t come alone," she added, her voice tinged with that familiar excitement that always spelled trouble. "My friend and her son are here."Just like that, my smile vanished."Mum, not again!" I groaned inwardly. "Especially not here, with all these people around. Why on earth did you bring them?""They were already planning to attend, darling. You can’t avoid them now. Come, meet Mrs. Moore and her very handsome son, Mike," she insisted, as though this were the most natural thing in the world.I drew in a deep breath, plastering on a polite smile that I hoped didn’t look too for
Ryan's POV Great! Simply great!! Now you see, my love, how I won you back; no matter what happened in the past, I am going to resolve it and have you in my home, in my bed, and my arms, soon, very soon. You are mine!! Emma's POV “Fine,” Ryan said, finally relenting, though his tone was still far too smug for my liking. “If you insist on your flat, we’ll go there. But don’t think this is over, Emma. We’ll talk more about what’s best for James.”I glared at him but said nothing; he drove back toward my flat. I was looking out of the window. Just then James asked from the back seat, “Mummy! Can we stop for lunch? I’m starving!”“Starving?” Ryan scoffed dramatically, quickening his pace to catch up with James. “Didn't you eat breakfast, son?”James giggled. “But that was 3 hours ago! I’m a growing boy.”Ryan smiled at him through the rearview mirror. “Alright, alright. You’re right. A growing boy needs fuel. How about we stop at that diner just up the street? The one with those massive
Emma's POV “Are you out of your mind?” I hissed, barely able to keep my voice steady.Ryan’s eyes darkened, his smile fading into something more cold, more calculated. “Yes, I am. I’ve lost all sense of reason after finding out you’ve been hiding our child from me. The best I can do now is ensure he lives with me, where he belongs. You can come along if you like, or I’ll take you to court. And trust me, Emma, I’ll make sure you don’t get to live with him. You deprived me of his love. The choice is yours.”His words struck like a blow, knocking the wind out of me. I knew he wasn’t bluffing. He had the resources, the connections, and the determination to follow through. And James—oh God, James would be caught in the middle of this, pulled apart by our war. My stomach twisted at the thought.I stood there, my pulse thundering in my ears as Ryan’s words sank in. His smile was too calm, too assured as if he already knew how this would play out. As if he’d won. I clenched my fists, resisti
Emma’s POVHalf an hour ago…I woke up in the quiet stillness of the hotel room, my head heavy but the sharp edge of the migraine thankfully dulled. Soft morning light filtered through the curtains, and I blinked, adjusting to my surroundings. The space beside me brought a pang of unease. Where was Ryan?My heart quickened as fragments of last night flickered in my mind—Ryan’s warm, steady hands taking care of me, holding me through the worst of the pain. Was it real, or had I dreamt it? And now, he was gone. Then the realization hit me like a cold wave. James. School.Ryan had been insistent about removing James from the hostel, determined to bring him home. My breath caught as dread clawed its way into my chest. He hadn’t waited for me to wake up. He didn’t as he was going to take James away from me.“Oh, God,” I muttered, panic rising. Why hadn’t I realized it sooner? I shouldn’t have agreed to this, I shouldn’t have let him take the reins. I had to stop him.I threw on yesterday’s
Ryan's POV I wasn’t going to let our son stay in that hostel any longer. He belonged with us, with me. And I knew Emma. She wouldn’t let me take him away from her. She loved him too much for that. It was the one card I had to play, and I was going to play it carefully and strategically. She’d have no choice but to come back. And once she was here, once we were together again, I’d make sure she never left.I leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead, and smiled. “You were born to be with me,” I whispered, my lips brushing against her skin. “And I’ll get you back, my love. By hook or by crook.”She stirred slightly, but I didn’t move. I wanted to hold her longer, to stay like this forever, but I had things to do. I couldn’t afford to waste time, not when the plan was already in motion. I gently untangled myself from her, careful not to wake her, and slipped out of bed. She needed her rest. Last night had taken its toll, and I wasn’t going to rush her recovery. I could wait. I h
Ryan's POV I hadn’t planned for things to turn out this way.But this time she shocked me. Not only did she leave me without saying a word, even when we had a baby together. Why did she leave? What was the reason that had torn us apart? My jaw tightened as the memory surfaced. How could she not have told me? Didn’t I deserve to know? Didn’t I have a right to be angry? But then, looking at her now, so pale and fragile, all that anger seemed to dissolve into something else. Something softer, more desperate. I didn’t just want answers. I wanted her. I wanted to hold her, pull her close, and make all of this go away. I wanted her back in my life, in my arms, where she belonged. But I couldn’t do that. Not yet. Not until we talked. Talked.Despite everything, I could never fall out of love with her. For now, I had to be patient. I had to let her rest, let her heal. There would be time for everything else later. But as I sat there, watching her sleep, I knew one thing for certain: I wa
Ryan's POV I sat down next to her, not saying anything at first. She didn’t move, didn’t look at me, but I knew she was aware of my presence. After a while, she spoke, her voice, barely a whisper, “I hate it here.”It wasn’t a dramatic statement, just a simple, heartbreaking truth. She wasn’t talking about the river or the house or even her life. She was talking about being stuck in a world that didn’t let her be herself. I didn’t know what to say. I was just a kid too, barely able to handle my own emotions, let alone someone else’s.But I wanted to comfort her, to let her know she wasn’t alone. So, I did the only thing I could think of—I took off my jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders. It wasn’t much, but it was something. She looked up at me then, and for the first time, I saw her really look at me, not as her older brother, or a family friend, or some orphan boy her parents had taken in, but as someone who mattered to her. It was in that moment that I realized I cared about
Ryan's POV Everyone was worried about her, and she was hiding in my room. I had no idea how she’d managed to slip past her mother’s watchful eyes, but there she was, curled up under my bed. At first, I thought she was just playing some game, but then I realized she was sleeping. She must have been so exhausted from constantly having to be someone she wasn’t. I watched her for a while, not sure what to do. Should I wake her? Should I let her sleep? In the end, I just left her there. She looked peaceful, and I wasn’t about to disturb that. When she got up and I felt the moment under the bed I bent to see her. " Hello!! " " H..Hi!! " She said looking a bit scared. " Come out!! " I said and she came out feeling embarrassed for being caught. " What are you doing here?? " I asked. " Hiding." She bit her lip. " But why?" I asked her. " My mom wants me to learn to play music and Dad wants me to take classes to be like him... I..." She told me hesitantly. " And you don't want to do th
Ryan's POV I swallowed, glancing at Emma. She was resting now, her face still pale but the lines of pain were slowly easing. "I didn’t know," I muttered, running a hand through my hair. "Why didn’t she tell me it was this bad?""People tend to downplay their pain," the doctor said, standing up. "Especially when they don’t want to burden others."His words hit me harder than I expected. Had I made her feel like that? Like she couldn’t tell me? Like her pain didn’t matter? My fists clenched at my sides as I nodded, watching as he packed up his things."Just keep an eye on her," he said before leaving. "Make sure she rests."As the door closed behind him, I stood there for a moment, feeling the weight of everything settle on my shoulders. The anger, the frustration—it was all still there, simmering beneath the surface. But it was tangled up now with guilt, with worry, with the desperate need to make things right.I walked back to the bed, watching her sleep, her chest rising and falling
Ryan's POV " Emma, we need to calm down and talk, properly." " Then why did you try to..." " I was trying to fix things, and got carried away," I said before she could finish her sentence. "This won’t fix anything. We need to talk," she said, her voice softer now, but still strained. "Just talk."I nodded, stepping back, though every fiber of my being screamed at me to pull her close again. "You’re right. But don’t think for a second I’m letting you go. You still belong to me."Her eyes met mine, and for the first time since all this started, I saw a flicker of something else in her gaze. What was that?? But I knew, somehow, that this wasn’t the end. Not even close."Ryan! We can't talk like this. We will talk later..." She said. " We will talk about it right away, don't you think we should have talked about this years ago? No, we will talk right away. " " I have a severe headache. " She said pressing her head. Enough of her excuses... She used the same one last night as well
