5- The Truth

“We need to leave Ambarjon as soon as possible.” Elara was licking her fingers after eating a cupcake when she heard Thalia.

“But we are supposed to leave after one month.” Thalia had gotten the job in Kanderton. She not only accepted the offer but also asked Elara to join her.

Elara could not stay here any longer as they needed to hide the pregnancy from Aiden Lockwood. She had already started applying for different jobs online in Kanderton.

“I know. But now we need to move within two days.”

Elara sat up straight in the bed, “Why so sudden? You look worried. Is everything alright, Thalia?”

“Today I saw Vicky in the hospital. That day she had a miscarriage and now she was at Dr. Natasha’s clinic for her treatment.”

“Oh? So, what does it have to do with me? Though I am sorry for her baby.”

“Silly! Dr. Natasha was your gynecologist too. Today Vicky was alone. But soon Aiden would be visiting Dr. Natasha along with her. What if Natasha tells him about your babies?”

Elara's heart raced in her chest. Thalia was right. They could not risk it.

“When should we leave?” she had determination on her face.

“Tomorrow night! I will come up with any excuse at the hospital. Keep your stuff minimal. We will leave the country. I have already asked Mr. Patrick to book our flights.”

“I am so lucky to have you as my friend!” Elara smiled.

“And I will be the best aunt for my babies,” she patted Elara’s belly, “Buckle up, kids. Let’s give your father a run!”

“Mr. Lockwood!” Dr. Natasha stood up from her seat, “How are you?”

Aiden took a seat after the handshake. Vicky sat beside him.

“I am good. It is her second visit,” Aiden pointed towards Vicky, “I just wanted to make sure she gets the best treatment. She might be needing psychological help too. We just lost a baby.” he said matter of factly.

“We?” Natasha raised a brow, “I mean are you, her husband?”

“Yes!” Vicky spoke.

“No,” Aiden was quick to shake his head making Vicky tongue-tied in shock.

“Oh. That was what I thought. I mean how come a man be married to two ladies? Ha-ha.” The poor doctor didn’t know anything about Aiden’s divorce.

Aiden stayed quiet.

Vicky didn’t like it. She was Aiden’s first love, and she was expecting Aiden to tell the doctor that she was his soon-to-be wife. His fiancée.

This evening she would ask Aiden to buy her an expensive engagement ring. Maybe the one she saw in a fashion magazine. She needed his support. This time she couldn’t let him go out of her clutches.

“I … I need to go out for some fresh air.” She was expecting Aiden to follow her but had to face disappointment.

“So, Mr. Aiden Lockwood,” Dr. Natasha got serious, “You need to ask your wife to take it all very seriously. She is again missing her appointments. Her case is precious, and she needs to visit me on time. Or has she changed her doctor?”

She asked him, leaning back in her seat. Aiden was looking for words. How to tell her that …

“Mr. Lockwood. I understand you must be scared. However, with punctual visits and correct medication, twin pregnancies have a very high rate of survival. You don’t need to worry about …”

“Excuse me?” several lines appeared on Aiden’s forehead, “What did you say? Twin pregnancies? Whose pregnancy are you talking about?”

“Umm. Mrs. Elara Lockwood. I mean I do have her record here,” She clicked on her monitor and turned the screen to him, “Here. Elara Lockwood. We witnessed two sacs, and she needs extra care…”

Aiden felt as if someone had taken away breath out of his chest.

Elara was pregnant? With twins?

“Mr. Lockwood! Mr. Lock…”

Aiden couldn’t hear any further. He rose to his feet and quickly left the room, leaving a shocked doctor behind.

He quickly took out his phone, “I asked you to keep an eye on her. Is she still staying with Thalia?” he asked his man icily.

“I am coming to that apartment.” He was trying for some self-control.

“Sir. She was here till last night. But now their door is locked, and they are not here.”

“What do you mean they are not here? They might be out for some errand or job or … Just find them!”

“Sir. I was about to call you. They usually go for short morning walks. But they didn’t come out this morning. When I knocked on the door, nobody answered me. There is a gardener whose name is Patrick. He said they left last night quite discreetly. Nobody knows where they went.”

Aiden felt his heart sinking. There was this unexpected emptiness. Where have you gone, cupcake?

“Aiden!” he tilted his head when he saw Vicky walking towards him, “I have just decided. I need an engagement ring. So instead of dropping me home please buy me a beautiful diamond ring.”

“Go with the driver and buy whatever you want!” he said in a cold voice, “just stop disturbing me, Vicky. Ok?”

Vicky’s lips trembled. Why was he acting like this? She hoped he hadn’t discovered the truth.
