Her head was pounding in pain as she slowly blinked her eyes open. Her eyelids felt so heavy. A groan of pain escaped her lips as she turned around on the hard mattress. She gazed at the dull ceiling. This wasn't her room. And just like that, the events of last night bombarded her head and she abruptly sat up.
Her wide eyes bounced around the room to find it empty. The furniture looked old and dirty. She got out of bed only to freeze when she found herself wearing a loose dress that reached her calves. She wasn't wearing anything inside and her bag was nowhere in sight.
Her eyes glossed up as dread started to creep into her bones. Where was she? Her clothes. Did someone do something bad to her? Her heart squeezed in pain in her chest.
She heard footsteps approaching and her eyes broadened in fear. She looked around the room but there was no window or restroom where she could hide. Grabbing the lamp from the bedside table she held it like a weapon as she waited like a scared kitten for the door to open and reveal her kidnapper.
The door opened and Ava threw the lamp at the intruder. Just when the lamp escaped her hold she realized it was a woman. That woman easily dodged the attack, the lamp crashed on the doorway as she scowled at Ava.
"This is a way to treat a person who saved your life?" The woman asked and just Ava stared at her scared.
"W...who are you?" Ava asked as the woman smiled at her which took her off guard.
"I'm Lilith, your father's business partner." She said casually.
Ava blinked at the woman suspiciously. What if she was lying? What if she was sent by those huge men to kidnap her?
"P...prove it," Ava said in a small voice as Lilith cocked a perfect brow at her, and then she smirked. She shuffled out her phone before showing a picture to Ava. Jacob and Lilith were seated in a restaurant along with a few other people.
"Why did you kidnap me like that?" Ava asked.
"I saw a few men in black running after you. At first, I thought it was someone else but you had a great resemblance to Jacob's daughter so I decided to make sure. When I saw you again outside the club I knew you were Jacob's daughter, so I saved your life." Lilith said casually. Her curly waves with the slightest of movements as she speaks.
"M..my father. Can I talk to him? Can you call him? Where're my belongings?" Ava said panicked.
"First, have a shower. I'll make breakfast for you." Lilith said as she grabbed her hand and guided her to the restroom. "B..but last night he was in danger," Ava said. "First do what I say then I tell you everything," Lilith said before leaving.
Ava brushed her teeth with a spare brush and hopped under the shower. After a quick shower, she wore a bathrobe.
Lilith changed her clothes last night. She was thankful that she did that otherwise if Ava kept those wet clothes on by now she would've been burning with fever.
Stepping out she ambled to the kitchen. Lilith's apartment was small just like hers back in Greenwich. She already misses her home.
"Your bag was wet so I dried up all your clothes. They are on the sofa," Lilith said. She stepped into the lounge and found her clothes neatly folded. She grabbed a tank top and jeans before stepping into the room. Locking the door she hurriedly changed before walking out. She thanked Lilith as Ava grabbed her phone from the sofa and dialed her father. His phone wasn't reachable and dread started to creep in.
"Lilith?"
"Yes?"
"You never asked me who were those men after me?" She asked, Lilith tensed for a second but then she schooled her expressions.
"Come here and eat this quickly. I will talk after that," Lilith said, placing a plate of pancakes with strawberry syrup on it at the table.
She stared at the food with suspicion. Everything happening in her life over the past 24 hours was a mess. She couldn't help but think if Lilith was with those huge men and this food could be drugged or poisoned but then again if she wanted to hurt Ava. She could've when Ava was completely passed out.
Ava took her seat thanking Lilith as she began eating. Lilith also joined her with her plate. Once she was done eating she looked at Lilith expectantly.
"I saw my father last night. Surrounded by huge men, when they saw me they ran after me. My father is in danger, we must take help from the cops," Ava said as Lilith breathed in deeply.
"There's no need to get the cops involved because it's over," Lilith said as she stood up and walked into her room. Ava was about to go after him but she was back holding an envelope in her hand.
"Your father gave this to me a few days back," Lilith said as Ava took the envelope from her. There was cash in it along with a paper. Taking out a paper she read the letter.
Tears brimmed her eyes and fell on the paper.
"My dear Ava,
Dad misses you and Annie every day. I love you a lot. I wanted to live with both of you as a family but I couldn't because of the type of work I do. It is difficult to explain but all I can tell is, it's dangerous. That is why I stayed away from both of you so my enemies won't find out about you.
If you're reading this letter, this means that I'm no more in this world. Lilith is my most trusted person. She must've given this letter to you. I'm leaving behind some cash. Lilith would hand you over a bank account in which I kept all my savings for you and Annie.
My beautiful daughter, you must stay strong and take care of Annie. Just know that I love you and Annie so much. Stay happy knowing that your father has once again reunited with your mother.
I'm proud of you and Annie.
Love you both with all my heart.
Your dad."
Tears kissed her cheeks as a sob tore through her lips and Ava wailed in so much anguish. Today was her father's birthday.
She finally came to meet him and he was no more.
"Here, wear this," Lilith quickly handed her a white hoodie and a black cap. Ava quietly wore the hoodie over her shirt and put the cap on. She was silent as the darkness of the night and her heart was in anguish.
Lilith noticed the girl. She looked as if her life was snatched away from her. She understood the pain of losing a parent. But she couldn't possibly tell this girl that there might be chances her father was alive. It would be better for Ava to assume he was dead because there was no certainty if he was alive or not. Lilith did exactly what he asked of her. She handed his letter to his daughter.
"Hey," Lilith gently touched her arm. "I know it's hard for you, darling. You've to be strong for yourself and your sister. Once you leave this country. Don't come back here," Lilith said.
Ava gave a small nod. Lilith glanced at the guy who was silently standing in the corner. "Evan," She forwarded her hand and Evan placed a small box in her hand.
Lilith opened the box and held it in front of Ava. "Take one," She said.
Ava glanced at the small sweets in that box. They all were of the same pink color.
"What is this?" She asked in a croaked voice. Her voice was gruff with all the crying.
"It will mask your scent for twenty-four hours," Lilith said.
"What?" Ava was confused.
"Have one. It'll calm you down," Evan said.
As per Lilith's words, Evan was her father's student and a trusted guy.
Ava took one and swallowed it. Lilith put the box in her duffle bag.
"If you ever get caught and want to escape those bad guys, have this, they won't be able to track you down then," Lilith said and packed Ava's bag.
Ava was muddled. "I don't understand," She whispered.
"We don't have time. We have to leave now, Lilith," Evan said peering down at his watch with his brows furrowed in tension.
"Here," Lilith put spectacles on Ava and the next second they were leaving that apartment.
Ava noticed the building was shady and the neighborhood wasn't the very best place to live. Evan opened the door for her and she quietly took the passenger seat while he rounded the hood of the pick-up truck.
Lilith leaned on the window as she gently caressed Ava's cheek. "Your father loved you both, sweetie. There was never a day he didn't talk about you guys. His job was too dangerous. That's why he never came to meet you guys. But he missed you both a lot," She said softly.
Ava inhaled sharply, tears stinging the back of her eyes. She didn't want to cry like a baby. But her heart was ripping apart.
"Was he doing bad work?" She asked in a small broken voice. Lilith's eyes widened and Evan paused. They both shared a look before she cleared her throat.
"No, honey. All I can tell you is your father was an amazing person. His job was related to the government somehow. So don't ever think your father was a bad guy," Lilith said.
Ava sniffed. All she ever knew was that her father worked in a top-notch Microsoft firm and he was the head of his team. So the company needed him all the time, that was why he couldn't visit them. But it was a lie. If she knew he had such an unsafe job, she would've tried to coax him out of such dangerous work.
There was a possibility her father was a secret agent trying to capture the bad guys but he got caught by them.
"Take care of yourself and Annie. And never come back here again." Lilith said the last part rather curtly as the girl nodded.
Evan tipped his head at Lilith who stepped back before he put the car to drive.
The ride was silent for the first three hours. Her sniffing and light sobs were heard once in a while. Evan offered her a napkin. She took it and thanked him as she composed herself.
"Where are we going?" She asked after some time.
"Texas," His reply was shot and to the point.
Her eyes widened slightly. They'll drive to Texas from Saltillo. "You'll catch a flight from the USA. We'll be there by early dawn. Your ticket has been already booked," He said and she just blinked at her hands on her lap.
Ava leaned back in her seat as she gazed out of the window. The tears threatened to escape again. How would she tell Annie that their father was no more? The thought alone was heart-wrenching.
The irony; she saw her father one last time but in such a state. Only if she was strong or she was able to call the cops. Her father would've been alive.
She didn't know when sleep consumed her. The next time she was woken up by a gentle jerking at her shoulder.
She blinked confused only to find Eva standing outside while the door to her side was open. They were at a gas station.
"I won't stop the car later, if you need to use the restroom then do it now," He said and she bobbed her head groggily stepping out of the car.
She did her business and stepped out noticing how Evan was talking on the phone while his blue eyes kept glancing around in alert. He was tall and looked strong. Just like a secret agent. No one would suspect him to be one.
She approached the vehicle and he tipped his head at her to get in the truck. She quietly obliged. Closing her door he locked the truck before walking into the store.
He was back a couple of minutes later. Poked the SIM card out of his phone, crushed it, and then tossed it in the bin.
Getting in the truck he offered her a plastic bag that had snacks. She thanked him politely and they began their journey again.
The next time she woke up they were already at the San Antonio airport. Evan escorted her inside before he handed her the ticket. "Alright, you're on your own from this point," He said with a deep breath, tucking his hands in his pockets.
She grabbed her duffle and faced him. "Thank you so much for helping me," She said genuinely and for the first time, he smiled.
"Your father was a good man, Ava. To be honest we didn't choose this occupation. It chose us. Your father taught me a lot. He was my trainer. I have huge respect for him. If I get to save his precious daughter then I'm honoured." He smiled and her eyes again glistened with tears.
"If I'll ever be free from this work. I'll come to you and protect you," He said softly and her eyes widened slightly.
A rear trickled down her cheek and he gently wiped it with his thumb. "Take care of yourself," He said.
"You too," She whispered. They stared at each other a bit longer before she turned on her heels and stepped inside leaving him behind.
Ava couldn't sleep properly for two weeks straight. She was drained and cried every night. She even missed the date for submitting her university application. She kept thinking about how they would've killed her father. How much they had tortured him.Her life was not on the right track and she was afraid to share the loss of her father with Annie. She couldn't even imagine how Annie would react. She'll be so heartbroken. Annie never got to meet their mother because her mother died while birthing Annie and now she lost her father as well. They were orphans. Ava was in depression and staying at home all the time wasn't helping her. She wasn't even eating properly. Sitting on the couch in the lounge, she was silently weeping again. She cried for a while before she wiped her tears and pulled to her feet. She had to compose herself. Ava made up her mind to look for a job. Her father wasn't there to help her with the finances anymore and the amount he left will be used for Annie's educ
Ava was walking down the street. She woke up early, had a shower, got ready, and quickly had a sandwich and coffee before stepping out. She checked the time and there were still twenty minutes left before the bakery opened. She was going through her phone when she heard a yelp. Her eyes snapped up and she noticed a cyclist bumping against something he lost balance and the next thing he crashed into her as they tumbled down. She winced in pain feeling weight on top of her. "Oh, I'm sorry," The person quickly moved back and she tried to sit up but a whimper left her lips feeling pain in her arm. She looked down to find blood. She got her arm scratched through something from the cycle. "I'm so sorry, are you alright?" The guy asked, panicking as he saw the blood. Grabbing his handkerchief he wiped the blood. More people approached as a lady helped her to the street cafe and helped her sit on the chair. The guy wiped her blood. It was a small cut. After a couple of minutes, it stoppe
"How are you, potato?" Ava asked her sister while keeping her eyes on the door. There were no customers at the moment. "Stop calling me that! I'm good. How are you? I miss you so much, Ava. Claire and I baked lava cake last night in our dorm. It tasted awesome. I'll make it for you next time only if you'll be nice to me and ask nicely," Annie said like the little cute brat she was. Ava's heart twisted up in knots. She had to tell Annie about their father soon. "I'd love to taste it but you'll make it anyway for me so I ain't asking nicely, potato. When are your finals?" She asked. "You're aka bully. The finals are probably at the end of next week. The date is not confirmed yet. I can't wait to meet you after that." Annie's cheerful voice was heard. "Me too, I love you, potato" Ava said. "I love you too, bully" Annie responded as they said their goodbyes. Her phone vibrated with a message and she smiled at her screen. It was Annie's picture with the lava cake as she grinned at th
Ava stepped out of the bathroom freshly showered and donning her night shorts. Drying her hair with her towel, Ava plopped on the sofa and took a bite of her sandwich. The doorbell rang and her brows creased for a fleeting second before it was gone. It must be Mrs. Smith, her neighbor. She was a very kind woman. Always brought her souvenirs and food. Sinking her feet into fluffy flats, Ava checked the door. The girl paused as the small towel dropped from her hand. Her eyes widened in shock as she blinked once and then twice. A Greek God was standing at the door. It was no one other than Mr. Whitlock. He was freaking shirtless. Holy moly! The man was built through and through like the perfect sculpture. As if God created him with divine attention. Those massive shoulders, sturdy chest, chiseled abs, the contours of every muscle. Her eyes glided over the number of scars that littered his body. Was he in a war or something? She wasn't breathing. Her sole focus was on the art crafted
"This is your first time?" Vanessa was a bit stunned by Ava's confession. They were at the club and it was her first time there. Though she wasn't wearing anything fancy. Ava was in waist-length jeans and a crop top. Her wavy long hair was up in a ponytail. They got off work and Vanessa dragged her to the club. When Vanessa found out Ava had no friends, she made up her mission to introduce her to her friend circle and help her get a life."Yeah, you see, going to such places requires friends or a partner but I'm single and lack friends. I wasn't the adventurous type but I do like having fun occasionally," Ava said, staring down at her juice. "You're boring as f*ck. Let me guess, the adventure in your nerdy dictionary is reading your favorite book at home or going out on a walk at night to get fresh air and feel as if you've achieved something incredible because you make it back home alive.""How did you know?" Ava asked, a bit stunned. Vanessa's eyes flew wide. "You f*cking kiddin
"The f*ck!" Vanessa was dumbfounded. "Quiet down," Ava tried to hush her. "What the actual f*ck! So you're telling me, that handsome hunk you were drooling over is your neighbor. You found it out five days ago and thought of informing me now! And to top the charts, he showed up wounded at your door and you tended to his wound last night." "Pretty much sums up." "You f*cking kidding me?" "Do I look like I'm kidding?" "What is this? A romantic series of hot neighbors?" "I thought that too. No wonder we bond too well, Van." The bell dinged and customers stepped in. "You better tell me all the deets once our shift ends," Vanessa said before hurrying to the kitchen as Ava greeted the customers and took their orders. Retrieving her phone she texted Annie. Ava: How was your exam? Tucking it in her pocket she looked up only to gasp. This was the second time he had walked in without any sound. Ava glared at the bell and wondered why the hell it wouldn't jiggle when he stepped in.
"What are you staring at?" Alice bumped Ava's shoulder. "Nothing," She muttered going through the text that popped on her screen. Khoroshaya Devochka. She was looking for the meaning of it. It took her some time to properly spell it and when she found the meaning she couldn't help the blush that crept on her cheeks. Good girl. He called her a good girl. God! Why did her face feel so hot? "Are you learning Russian?" Alice probed as Ava slid her phone into her pants and focused on her friends. They were currently at Audrey's place who invited them all for drinks. Ava didn't drink but she still joined them for the fun of it. "Nah.""Let's play, never have I ever." Vanessa mused. "I'll start, never have I ever seen a ghost." Alice mused as they all formed a circle holding shots in their hands. Daniel gulped down his shot and everyone gaped at him wide-eyed. "You've seen a ghost?" Audrey asked in a spooky tone. "Yeah, she's sitting in front of me," Daniel said with a poker face. A
Ava didn't move, heck, she didn't even realize what was happening. It took a couple of seconds for her mind to register what was happening. His cold and rough lips were meshed against hers. A visible shudder zapped through her spine when his tongue darted out and he licked her lips. Grabbing her hand that was on his thigh he tugged her closer. Her eyes were wide in alert and the shock that flared through her cells. She tried to pull back but he only held her in place. Tilting her head, he deepened the kiss. He was eating her lips like a hungry beast. Her heart was pounding in her ears. Wild series of loud ba-thump. Ava was so distorted that she didn't even know how to tackle this situation. The speed at which heat was rising on her flesh sank deep into her skin, claiming more of the zone as it finally rose to her face. Her cheeks were flamed. His fingers dug into her scalp rather roughly and her lips parted in a whimper. With a low guttural moan, Aiden slid his tongue int
8 years later. Her brows furrowed and a moan slipped through her lips. Confusion washed over her sleepy state as she slowly opened her eyes, Ava felt it and her eyes widened. There was something inside her. Moving. The familiarity soaked her senses. Her gaze flickered to the man on top of her. "Good morning, baby." Thrust. Her lips parted, feeling every inch of him. "Aiden," She breathed his name. He had a pillow resting beneath her hips, holding her legs wide open, he slowly moved in and out of her. "You should've woken me up," she said in her slurry morning voice. "I want to wake you up like this. The expression of surprise and pleasure on your face is a treat to my eyes," He mused. Voice deep and husky with a perfect sleepy edge to it. His hair was a mess, brows furrowed as he moved inside her. She opened her arms, and he leaned in, pressing his lips on hers in a soft kiss, his chest pressing on her bare breasts. His hand slid between them as he grabbed
Ava sat at the edge of the pool with her legs immersed in the water while gazing at the beautiful sky which resembled a dark storm. The ghastly grey clouds scattered over the sky veiling the twinkling stars and glorious moon as a chilling breeze swept past her. It was calming. She loved this weather. The serenity before the rain. The storm. The darkness. The wild breeze. The weather seemed to be in ruthless chaos. Mayhem, and then it bursts in the form of rain. With rain, everything blurred out and all that mattered at that moment was just the present. As the heavy downpour tumbled down, the breeze felt ecstatic. The darkness felt soothing. The fresh scent of after-rain felt surreal. Ava smiled a little startled when the clouds grumbled wildly. A promise of a downpour in its wake. A month had passed since Ava came back to live with Aiden. He took care of everything and wouldn't even let her step out of bed. Ava got better in a week, but he was just too caring. Aiden would s
"What the f*ck are you doing here?" Jacob growled, his hands fisted on his sides and by the dark look on her father's face, she knew he was mad. She had never seen him this pissed in her entire life. "I came to see my wife," Aiden said calmly, pulling to his feet. His eyes lingered over Ava for a couple of seconds before he faced Jacob. There was something about Aiden. He stood tall with his shoulders squared, staring down at her father with that blank look. He resembled a hidden menace. "Your wife? She's not your wife!" Jacob barked. Aiden's jaw ticked as he noticed from his peripheral vision that Ava had stepped out of the bed. "She is my wife, Jacob. I've thought hard about it and concluded. I can't let her go and no one can make me think otherwise." His voice was firm. "Are you in the right state of mind? She is in this condition because of you. It's better if you leave my daughter alone." Jacob fumed. "As I said. I cannot let her go." Aiden's tone oozes out fin
Ava was lying in bed. She was sleepy but she didn't let herself doze off. She waited. Patiently. Hours passed and he didn't show up. Maybe it was all her imagination. Ava buried her face in the pillow and tears of frustration gathered in her eyes. She wants to kill him. Maybe she could; once she gets better. Burying her face further in the pillow she let her body relax and tried to sleep. The ticking of the wall clock was the only faint noise in the silent room. Her breathing relaxed and she tilted her face, her eyes droopy. Just when she was about to drift into her sleep. She heard a light noise. Followed by a heavy thump of boots on the balcony. Ava's eyes flew wide when she heard the subtle creak of the window. A light shuffling and she slammed her eyes close, evening out her breathing and calming her heartbeat, pretending to sleep. She didn't hear a single sound but suddenly goosebumps rose on her flesh when she felt an intense gaze followed by a soft caress on her che
Three days went by in a state of daze and blur. Most of the time she was sleeping and when she was awake, Ava just stared at the ceiling and reeled that barbaric night in her head on a loop. In these three days, Aiden didn't show up. He had abandoned her. The more time passed, the more she felt she was losing herself in silent distress. She hasn't said a single word in the past few days. Ava would sleep most of the time, have small portions of soup or porridge twice a day, and just lay in her bed. Lilith would sit beside her and talk nonstop, sometimes Marcus also joined in; talking about his trainee days and telling her how Jacob made his life hell because he was such a strict leader. Evan did show up in her room twice but both times he would just stand in the corner while Lilith and Marcus talked, and he would quietly leave with them. Thankfully her father hadn't told Annie anything, and she was oblivious to everything. She'd visit them in summer and there were still a
A cry of pain tore through her lips. Ava glanced at the girl who helped her kill the guy hoping she could do it, but she was sprawled out cold on the floor. The fire was reaching close to her. The people trapped in those cages were screaming, banging on the electric wall, and getting electrocuted. Ava was crying full-blown now as she forced her body to move. She had to save them. She had to. Ava dragged her body up with the help of the wall, she put pressure on her wounded leg and the stitches tore her skin and opened making her scream in pain as she jumped forward slamming her palm on the button before falling. Water mist splashed water all over the place. Sirens of emergency and evacuation were ringing, and it felt like she was hearing them through the end of a tunnel. Cold water touched her skin. A shuddering breath left her lips as she closed her eyes hoping for all the pain to go away and softly whispered Aiden's name for the peace of her heart. Ava was in a beau
Bullets were raining behind him and he got hit in the back causing him to stumble forward crashing into her as she held him. "Aiden," She whispered shakily, feeling wetness on her hand. There was a wild commotion behind them. Animalistic growls and snarls but all she could hear was a numbing whistle ringing in her ears, seeing red coating her palm. "Take cover," He rasped in her ear before pulling back. Aiden roared like a wild beast, and she noticed his canines extending and claws expanding as he lunged at the scarred old man. Ava noticed Enzo and more Aiden's men infiltrating the place like charged canons. A guard tried to get to her, but someone blocked his way in a flash and knocked him down with a solid punch. It was Jacob. "Dad," She breathed shakily as Jacob hurried over to her. "F*ck, I'm late. Hide, Ava. Don't let them see you," Jacob said, forcing a pistol in her hand. "Use it to protect yourself. Kill if need be. Don't even hesitate when it comes to your safe
Ava banged on the door with all her might until her hands throbbed in pain. They had locked her in that room and then left. Cole was still unconscious while Ava had searched for every possible escape but there was none. She could hear two guards talking right outside the door. They were keeping an eye on them. It didn't matter how much she screamed or yelled at them to let her out. They didn't pay any heed to her. Ava was scared and drowning in anxiety with each passing second. Her pendant didn't electrocute her which meant she was close. Aiden would find her and be there any second now. A groan from behind had her head snapping to Cole. "F*ck," He cussed while trying to move but couldn't because of the wounds and pain. "Stay still. We are locked here. Your injuries are serious, you shouldn't move much," she said in a hoarse voice. Upon seeing her relief washed over him, his eyes fleeted to the gauze on her thigh and the number of bandages and patches that covered her face
"Are you done for the day?" Cole asked when he ordered his usual honey donut and Vanessa grumpily prepared it for him. They both hate each other's guts she could swear on it. They both left no chance to get on each other's nerves. It was fun to watch them, but Ava didn't want her friend to be dragged into this werewolf's world. "Yeah, I'll be out in a minute," Ava said hurrying to the staff room as she changed into her clothes and stepped out. Cole was waiting by the door watching Vanessa who was putting the chairs away. It was her turn to close tonight. Ava said her goodbyes to Vanessa while Vanessa yelled after her, reminding her of the brunch tomorrow with Alice and Audrey. The girls’ day out. Ava yelled over her shoulder that she remembered as she walked down the street with Cole to their car. Cole handed the donut to the homeless man and Ava watched him. "Why do you buy it, when every time you don't even eat it?" Often when there was no homeless person around, he wo
