August’s POV
Last night was a lot more intense than it was meant to be. No one was supposed to get hurt. Any wounds I got healed up thanks to my demon healing factor.
My mind was fixated on the human from last night, not the one who died. The one who left before the climax of our night was reached. I didn’t even catch her name. It was most likely for the better because she’d probably blame me for what went down. That or she’d be afraid of what I was and I wouldn’t be able to explain it away after what she saw. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to mess around with human women anymore.
Later in the day I left to pick up my niece from elementary school. Riley and her best friend Aaliyah got into the backseat of my car when I pulled up to the front of the school. “Hi, Uncle Auggie!” Riley shouted as she put on her seat belt and helped Aaliyah with hers.
“Hey Riley,” I said. “Happy birthday.”
“Thank you!!”
“Auggie do you have a wife??” Aaliyah asked, without beginning with a Hi.
I laughed and answered, “No, I don’t,” as I pulled off.
“He doesn’t have anyone but a lot of girls like him,” Riley whispered to her friend.
“Do you want one??” Aaliyah asked with excitement.
“Uh,” I said thoughtfully. “I’m not in a rush so it depends on who, you have someone in mind?”
“My Mom!” She shouted. “Remember last time you asked if she’s single??”
I was joking but I wasn’t going to lie, Aaliyah has said interesting things about her mom in the past. “Wait if he marries your mom then he’s gonna be your Dad no fair,” Riley whined but she would only be jealous because of the money I had. She probably thought if I got a stepdaughter I wouldn’t spoil her as much as I do now.
“But then we’ll be family too,” Aaliyah pointed out. “Cousins I think.”
Riley gasped excitedly. “Uncle Auggie! Marry her mom right now!” As entertaining as they were I was distracted by my phone ringing. It was my brother but I didn’t answer the call, still upset with him about the turn taken last night. “Let’s go to Aaliyah’s house first so you can meet but only really quick!”
“Yeah let’s go so you can meet your new wife!” Aaliyah exclaimed and the girls giggled while holding hands.
Why not? If that’s what the birthday girl wanted then we’ll make a detour. Surprisingly Aaliyah knew the directions to her house, she had a good head on her shoulders. Her mother must have been really put together if she raised someone like her. Put together wasn’t my type at all. I was more attracted to the unstable and wild type, like the woman I met last night. There was also the problem of Aaliyah’s mom being human but I doubt her mom would take this seriously so we could meet and that can be the end of it.
I parked in the driveway of the duplex and got out of the car as Aaliyah jumped out the backseat and ran into her house. I leaned against my car and began to wait. I had a good feeling even though I didn’t have my hopes up.
Someone’s eyes were on me and I quickly saw that they were in the window of the house I was waiting outside of. It was a woman. It was her, the woman from last night but she didn’t have too much of a reaction to seeing me again. My eyes lowered when I noticed she didn’t have a shirt on, only a bra. Her boldness enticed me.
She was pulled from the window and I went back to staring at the front of their home.
I was growing a little impatient as I waited. When I looked back at Riley in the car I could tell she was too but for a completely different reason.
Aaliyah came out with the woman from last night, she was her mom… what a coincidence. I was completely wrong about my assumption of her mom being put together and boring.
Nope, thankfully she didn’t remember me from last night. I couldn’t be too surprised that she was blacked out since she was definitely drunk enough. Being in the window half-naked wasn’t intentional but her spaciness was attractive as hell. She also didn’t seem all that embarrassed about it so I still considered her bold and confident. Aaliyah might have been a better match maker than I gave her credit for.
Clementine, that was her name.
We had a short conversation and I got her number before getting back in the car.
I couldn’t take my eyes off of Clementine as I pulled off. “Did you fall in love with my mom at first sight!?” Aaliyah asked.
“Yah did you??” Riley added.
I looked at Clemente at she walked away in my rearview mirror. Her ass was attention-grabbing that was for sure, respectfully of course. “Something like that girls,” I said and they both squealed, kicking their legs in their seats.
I picked up a couple more girls on the way to my place, Riley’s cousins from her mom’s side. Truthfully I was a little worried about Aaliyah because she’d be the only human kid. At first, I told Riley she couldn’t come but she wouldn’t stop asking for a full week so I gave in to her as always. She promised Aaliyah would be safe with her and her cousins so I trusted my niece to keep her human friend safe.
When we got to the house Riley gasped and squealed at the decorations I hired someone to put up for her. Not only that but I bought a bunch of crafts and games for them to play. That stuff was piled on the table along with some gift bags. My brother asked me not to overdo it but I was bored the day I went shopping for her.
While Riley and Aaliyah were at the table I pulled Riley’s cousins aside to stress to them that no harm was to come to Aaliyah and that they’re not allowed to expose their demon abilities or features.
Kayla, the other of the two, looked up at me and laughed. “I’m not stupid, I’ve been around a lot of humans at sleepovers before,” she said in a matter-of-fact tone.
Fair enough, I looked at her little sister who was only five and she nodded. “Okay,” she said but that didn’t bring me much relief.
“I’ll make sure she follows the rules,” Kayla promised and that eased my worry.
It was even more important to me that Aaliyah was brought back unharmed since I was interested in her mom.
While the girls had fun in one of the guest rooms I hung out by myself in the living room. I watched the news, waiting to see if they’d release any more information about last night. The guy Brooklyn was with was clueless. He described our demon forms accurately enough but he had no idea who we were or how we knew Brooklyn. By the way he spoke, he didn’t consider us people but that good for us. The police wouldn’t suspect it was either of us since we mostly stayed in our human forms. Well Dale would have to cut back on letting loose in his true form on weekends but that wasn’t my problem.
I was grateful Clementine left with her friends when she did. I just wish she succeeded in her attempt to get Brooklyn to go with her. If she did then she’d still be alive.
I got up to answer the door when I heard the doorbell.
Shit, Riley’s Mom Margo was at the front door. She’s been flirting with me ever since she divorced my brother for cheating. “What’s with the bag?” I asked, looking at the medium sized bag in her hand.
“Please. Aren’t you glad I’m spending the night?” She squeezed past me, letting herself in. “You didn’t think you’d be chaperoning the girls alone didn’t you?” I did. “I’m sure the little human girl’s mother would want a woman present. My impression of Clementine wasn’t that she’d care about something like that. If she did Margo wouldn’t be the type of woman I’d trust to look at for my daughter around a man I didn’t know.
I stayed in the living room ignoring Margo until she decided she would go into my room and sleep in my bed. I didn’t bother arguing with her, I slept in the living room instead.
In the morning I checked on the girls and was relieved to see Aaliyah was perfectly fine and there were no incidents. My niece and her cousins were all still completely in their human forms so our secret was preserved.
I wondered for a second if Clementine would care about my demonic side. Our family’s species was a mixture of human and demon. My parents moved here from the demon realm before I was born but I’ve visited often.
Once the girls woke up I made them breakfast. “Thanks Dad! My Dad makes the best breakfast, huh Riley??” Aaliyah said and I tried not to react to her calling me her Dad which she hadn’t done until now. I didn’t mind it at all but it did catch me off guard.
“Hm-mm cousin, he makes it almost as good as my mom,” Riley replied.
After breakfast, I went to the backyard with the girls where they played and danced to music Riley selected.
It didn’t take long for Margo to come outside. She was lying down at the lounge chair when she said, “I know you and your brother got into last night.”
I looked at her in the corner of my eyes and didn’t respond. Even though she was the one who left Dale, she still kept tabs on him. I didn’t for a second think she’d go to the police so I didn’t worry about her knowing our involvement in the crime.
Again I felt eyes on me.
When I looked around I saw Clementine at the gate. I walked to it and invited her in. She looked even sexier than when I saw her yesterday. She couldn’t have been an ordinary human, there had to be something different about her I was picking up on. I felt like she wouldn’t care and would like to fall in love with the unknown and the slightly dangerous.
Human or not, I wanted to make her mine.
No, I will make her mine and I promise you that.
My eyes opened to the sight of my eight-year-old daughter Aaliyah standing in front of me with her big bright brown eyes.As soon as I woke up I knew I didn’t avoid getting a killer hangover. Not only that but I was pretty sure I was still a bit drunk. No doubt I went… a little overboard at my friend’s party last night and I couldn’t remember much of how it ended. I got an idea as my eyes slowly shifted from my daughter to the other side of my bed. Strategically I pulled one of the blankets over the head of my one-night stand.“Mommy,” Aaliyah said with a giggle. “You can’t hide a whole man.” Trust me, I have multiple times before. “We need to leave so I can get to school.”“Tillie couldn’t take you?” I asked as I rubbed my temples, trying to relieve my throbbing headache.Tillie, my best friend and the only support I’ve had since I got pregnant at… fifteen. The man outside looked in my direction and the introduction of our gazes felt magnetic. Not only that but he looked familiar, like we had met before. I definitely couldn’t remember ever meeting anyone in Riley’s family besides her mother. Suddenly I was pulled away from the window by Tillie. “You should probably put a shirt on if you’re gonna be in the window like that,” she said.I looked down only to see my lace push-up bra… I forgot I was shirtless. No wonder he was looking at me so hard. Not only was I in a bra but there was still glitter on my boobs from the party. As my eyes fell down my body I had some bruising and scratching I didn’t notice that had to have also been from my wild night. When I looked up I noticed Tillie’s red puffy eyes. “What’s wrong?” I asked with my hand on her arm.“I’ll tell you after we humor Aaliyah,” she said and pulled me into the bathroom. She grabbed a spray bottle to moisturize my hair and brushed it into a high ponytail. Then she added a little p
