Becky jumped, almost startling me. She scratched her temple. "Oh, you are back!"

I handed her the glass of water and sat down beside her. "Where's Dawn?"

"Oh!" she exclaimed again and then took a sip of the water. "She went upstairs after saying something about a doll."

Glancing upstairs, I assumed Dawn went up to play. I faced Becky again. "So, who was that on the phone?"

"No...no one."

My brows knitted. How could she say no one when I overheard her tell someone good luck and at the same time say she wasn't going to forgive that person? Not that it was my business anyway, but since when did Becky start keeping secrets? She was always so chatty.

"If you say so," I finally said with a shrug.

Becky raised the glass to her lips and took a tiny sip again. I watched her lashes flutter and couldn't help but notice that her eyes were sunken.

"So, why are you here?"

After a small cough, she set the glass on the table and wiped her lips with the back of her hand. Without looking at me,
