Relief washed over me. Xavier wasn’t angry; he just wanted to think. I wanted to know what was on his mind, the thoughts that occupied him so intensely.

“Sleep,” he said gently, covering me with the duvet. His touch was tender, a stark contrast to the turmoil I sensed within him. Grandma had already left for her room, telling me to mindlink her if there was any problem.

"Xavier," I called softly, looking up at him. He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. There was so much going on in his mind, and I was troubled by the unknown. He didn't look like someone willing to hurt me; he seemed more like a lost soul, trying his best to ensure I was okay despite his own struggles.

“Hmmm,” he responded, his tone neutral. I had nothing more to say, the words caught in my throat.
