My fingertips tugged against my palm, my chest tightened as my eyes locked on the three who walked in. Honestly, I didn’t know why it bothered me since it was such a regular sight these days.
My husband, Felix Cross, strolled in casually with his sister-in-law, Anna.
Will, our Five-year-old son, tagged along against Anna's side, their fingers intertwined. The sound of their laughter was like a taunt to my ears.
Seeing me in the dining room, Will rushed up towards me. I gave a smile,my arms were still stretched towards him, frozen in midair, but will had already twirled back to Anna's side.
The warmth I expected in my embrace never came.
"Mommy, look what Aunty Anna bought me! It looks good on me, right?" He twirled even more, and that was when I noticed the new shirt he was wearing. "Isn’t it lovely? Miss Anna even bought one for Daddy. Isn’t she the perfect mommy?"
Ironic isn't it?
The child I nearly died bringing into this world now clung to another woman like she was his mother. My fingers curled slightly. I forced them open before anyone could the tremble.
"Hmm, I can see that," I retorted coldly.
Felix brushed past me as he guided Anna towards the table while I followed them closely. After he pulled out the chair for Anna and carefully tucked her in, helping her fix the napkin on her lap, he finally noticed me.
"Oh, you're here. I thought you would be working late today," he said calmly.
I bit my lip. Today was supposed to be our fifth anniversary. How could he forget something like that?
I decided to shrug it off.
I noticed Anna’s eyes glimmer when she stared at the dining table. The only reason I took an early break from work was to give my husband and son a surprise family dinner, but it seemed no one even cared or remembered.
"Sis, did you make all this because you want to welcome me? That is so wonderful!" Anna squeaked with joy.
Her tone was sweet and soft, just like her demeanor, but as I stood there in front of them, a sense of uneasiness crept into my chest.
"What do you mean, welcome?" I flickered my gaze over to Felix, who didn’t spare me a single glance as he poured himself a glass of wine.
Anna seemed a little frightened as she placed a hand over her lips. "Oh, I’m guessing Felix didn’t tell you yet."
My eyes squinted with confusion, trying to process what was happening. "Tell me what exactly?"
"Mommy, Aunty Anna is going to be staying with us!" Will cheered, and my heart sank in my chest.
"Stay? Here?" My voice came out shakily.
"Of course. Granny said she can come live with us," Will pouted, flickering his lashes.
At this point, I didn’t know if my son was just plainly taunting me or if he was merely concerned about Anna.
"Felix, is this true? Is this woman going to be living with us?" I swallowed hard.
Finally, Felix lifted his gaze to meet mine. "Is there a problem?"
"Felix, you just decided to bring someone into our home without even discussing things with me?" I snapped, my tone rising with frustration.
Running my hands over my hair, I snorted. "Forgetting our fifth anniversary is one thing, but bringing someone in without discussing it with me, Felix, that is too far."
Felix sighed, rubbing his temple. Like I was an inconvenience.
"Rebecca, must you always make everything about you?" He said flatly.
"You work late, you're hardly around, and then you throw a fit over something you throw a fit over something that doesn't even concern you?"
I stared at him, stunned.
Doesn't concern me?
This is my home. My family.
Felix glanced at Anna, who. Was quitely dabbing her tears with a tissue. His eyes softened. " You're scaring her."
Before I could speak will slammed me with his remark.
"That's true and please stop calling Aunty Anna 'that woman.' I don’t like it. Besides, the only reason Granny agreed is because Aunty Anna takes better care of Dad and me more than you ever could."
Anna pouted as she pulled Will to sit on her lap. "Silly boy, didn’t I tell you to call me Anna? We are a family."
Her hand brushed over his hair, and Will gave her his brightest smile. It had been a long time since Will smiled like that toward me. "I know what you said, but can I call you Mommy instead? Since Dad likes you so much and you take care of him?"
My brows furrowed as I stumbled back in shock, my heart sinking inside my chest. My pulse started pounding against my ears.
"Is that so?" I managed to say.
"Will, watch your mouth," Felix thundered, then turned towards me.
My whole body froze as I tried to process what was happening.
"He’s just a child. Don’t take his words seriously," Felix frowned, his eyes searching mine.
"Please, let’s just eat. I’m really tired from today’s activities, and I don’t need drama," he added, his tone dropping low.
My arms crossed over my chest. "So, you think I am bringing you trouble? Giving you a headache?"
"Look, Anna is going through a lot after the death of my younger brother, and she is very ill. Mother just thought it’s best she stays here so she won’t be lonely. Don’t you understand?"
I shook my head and dropped onto my seat, which was far on the other side of the table since Anna had taken the seat next to Felix while my son was by her side.
"Sis, I’m really sorry if I’m bringing you trouble." Anna’s eyes filled with tears, and her lips began to quiver. "I understand how you feel, so I think it’s best I leave."
Anna got up slowly, but Felix calmly placed his hand over her wrist. "Where do you think you are going?" he asked softly, in a tone that made my heart shatter.
Throughout our years of marriage, Felix had never spoken to me so gently. He had his moments when he took care of me, but never like this.
"Please, you have to let me go. I don’t want to cause any trouble in your marriage. It was all my fault for asking too much from you," Anna mumbled, and the tears started falling from her eyes.
Was she being serious right now?
Will quickly held her hand. "Anna, please don’t cry. It breaks my heart to see you this way."
Without any hesitation, Felix pulled her into his arms. "Shh, it’s alright. I’m here. You don’t have to cry."
I suddenly remembered the first time I was in pain and burst into tears. Felix’s words back then were stern: "Crying is weakness, and I hate weak people because they disgust me."
Tears instinctively welled up in my eyes. The sight was too much for me to bear, so I turned on my heel.
"Where do you think you’re going after trying to bully Anna? Apologize at once," Felix’s hoarse tone made me stop in my tracks.
My hands curled up into tight fists, so tight I felt my knuckles go white.
Taking a deep breath, I spun to Felix and forced a smile. "What if I don’t want to apologize?"
Silence fell over the dinning room.
I could hear the clock ticking, the faint sound from Will humming a tune as he played with Anna's bracelet.
Felix's expression darkened, his jaws tightening
Then before I could react— A sharp sting burned across my cheeks.
The room spun slightly as the impact forced my head to the side. The world went completely still.
My hands clenched at my side as my heart beat pounded in my ears.
Did... he just slap me?
Will gasp and Anna eyes widened with shock before she lowered her head, a faint smile formed on her lips.
Felix exhaled, flexing his fingers as if the action hadn't even meant anything to him. "Just stop making everything difficult, Rebecca. You're embarrassing yourself.
I slowly turned my head back to face him, eyes were like ice. I see it now. He doesn't love me. He never did.
And I will make sure he regrets this for the rest of his life.
KENDRICK'S POV"Mind your business, Jessica," I snapped, pulling my shirt to cover my neck. This necklace belonged to Becca, but apparently not anymore because I may have snatched it one time when we were growing up and I didn’t return it.I was going abroad, and I never knew when I was going to be back, so the necklace was my keepsake.I held it close so I could still feel tethered to warmth despite my cold, dark, lonely reality. She was my sunshine even though she doesn’t realize it just yet.Jessica tried to peek again over my neck, but I moved away. "That really looks familiar, where did you get it from?"I clicked my tongue, my body leaning against the chair. She was persistent like a bee."It is none of your business. How many times do I have to spell it out for you?" I grumbled, and my gaze shifted back to Jessica. That playful smirk coursing through her lips effortlessly as she leaned against the table, her elbows pressing against the wood for support."That looks like somethi
KENDRICK'S POV"Damn it." I cursed under my breath, raking a handful of my hair with a deep breath. She was still the same as I remembered. My heart had thumped hard just thinking about how her lips had parted when we were together. It was unusual—I’d never felt this way with anyone, man or woman."That sudden urge to cover our distance and do all the fantasies I cooked up inside my head all these years.I took another deep breath, sinking onto my bed. Somehow her scent managed to linger. My nose tickled.Every time I closed my eyes, I could see her and It was driving me insaneI craved her, but she didn’t need that. Not now. Not from me.That was unusual because I never felt this way throughout my time with any man or woman.I've asked myself a thousand times. Why her? Out of all the people I've known, why does she still haunt me? Rebecca Belmont—my obsession. I looked down at the necklace I always wore, the one with her initial. As if it held a piece of her."Slowly, I caressed it.
REBECCA'S POV"What exactly do you want, Reyes?"Our eyes were tightly fixed against each other, none of us wanted to falter.Kendrick's head lowered along with his body, and I held my breath. "Are you sure you want to hear it? I can be quite demanding."His long lashes fanning slowly. "Can you keep up, Belmont?" What a joke. Did he think he could scare me like that?I was about to say something when his voice interrupted me and my words died inside my throat."Take me out to dinner then," he said, like it was the most natural thing in the world. My heart stuttered, and for a second, I forgot how to breathe. What game was he playing, and why did part of me want to play along?"What?" I blurted out just after him, but he crossed his arms."What is the problem, Belmont? Can't keep up?"I narrowed my gaze, letting my eyes wander over him. Kendrick Reyes didn't look like an easy man, and somehow a part of me didn’t see this coming like a coincidence like Jessica had mentioned. His eyes
REBECCA' S POVMy skin started to tingle when I felt the cold water drop onto my face. His breath on my neck made my fists tighten. I froze against his towering frame that wanted to swallow my entire existence.I had never felt so small."Are you okay, Becca?" His tone was light and gentle, and I recoiled farther against the wall. My toes curled up against my flip-flops.I had heard that name countless times, but yet why did it have to feel so good coming from him?I narrowed my eyes slowly towards Kendrick, and our eyes met. Instinctively, my lips parted slightly. His gaze was sharp and so deep I was almost certain that he might be able to see right through me.I averted my gaze, only for my eyes to land on his bare chest. That was when I realized that my hands were on his abs.I froze again, with my chest heating up.Damn, did Kendrick always have such a nice body?I tilted my head and unconsciously brushed my hand over his tight, rock-board chest. The adrenaline shot up through my
REBECCA'S POV"Kendrick, what are you doing here?"His eyes were still on mine, refusing to be swayed, and then his lips curled up, nudging towards the card that he was holding out to me.Why was he here?I swallowed hard, slowly reaching out to it."If you wanted more clothes, you should have just told me," he says, leaning towards me.My throat felt dry as his scent filled me even more."You know I can get you anything you want?"My eyes widened. What was he saying? He curled his lips to the side, and then he gave a wink.I could hear Jessica shrieking like a banshee. But looking past his shoulders, I could see Jessica and Anna whispering amongst themselves.Kendrick was trying to make me not lose face. Probably Jessica had put him up to this, right?"Thank you so much..." Straining my voice, my heels clicked slowly, taking the card from his hand, and then I grinned, the words sliding from my tongue. "Love."Anna and Miriam eyed me with suspicion."Try it," I say, passing the card t
REBECCA'S POV"You should be grateful that the only thing you got was a slap," Jessica hissed, her lips curling up with disgust, her eyes sizing Miriam.Miriam gasped, her eyes flickering between me and Jessica."You won't get away with this..." Her teeth gritted as she tried to step closer, but I darted my eyes over to hers, slowly caressing my palm."Take another step closer and you will be receiving more than a slap."Instinctively, she was dumbstruck, panting heavily as her teeth clenched against her lips."Bad woman, why do you always want to cause trouble?" Will cried out, his tiny hands pressing against my feet, attempting to push me away. With a heavy sigh, I staggered back. My fists curled, not from rage—but shame. I couldn't look at Will. Not after he called me ‘bad woman’. Not after I let someone hurt him."Little brat," Jessica fumed, her fingers moving over to his ears, twisting them until he cried out."Rebecca, have you gone crazy? You will let someone bully your son?" A
REBECCA'S POVI used to love parties. But now, the idea of dressing up makes my stomach twist with so many emotions I could not explain. But since all the Elite would be there then so will be my treacherous Ex husband."So you will be coming, right?" Jessica's brows arched as she leaned in closer, breaking me from my thoughts. Her eyes searched mine so closely, like I was going to disappear if she blinked even for a moment."Can you just inch back a little?" I wrinkled my nose, slowly setting the card on the bed. "You're starting to suffocate me with your perfume."Jessica raised an eyebrow as she craned her neck to sniff her fabric."Come on, you know I smell good."I gave a small headshake, trying to fight back a smile. I couldn’t help but tease my best friend. "I know, but I can't help but think maybe you smell too good."Jessica let out a small laugh, then tugged on my shirt. My brows furrowed as she pouted. I had a feeling she was going to ask something from me.Whenever she wante
Rebecca's POV"Father, you are finally here!" Evelyn sneered. My jaw hardened as the couples made way, revealing Felix’s grandfather in his usual plain shirt with a cardigan draped over his legs. His personal nurse, Mrs. Eva, pushed his wheelchair toward us."Thank you, Eva. Please, you can leave," he mumbled softly, tilting his head in the direction of where Eva stood."I guess it is time for a family discussion."Then he turned back to me. His smile was hollow—looked really harmless—but something in me always pricked my heart, that there may be more to this frail, sickly old man."Okay, sir. I will be back tomorrow to check your vitals."Felix’s grandfather gave a subtle nod. "God bless you, Eva."I rolled my eyes. Even though he was a deacon in church, he somehow raised trash as children. What a joke."I heard the noise from my room. What is going on?"Evelyn rushed to meet Felix’s grandfather, her knees crouching down as she tugged against his sleeve.“Dad, your favorite granddaug
REBECCA'S POV"Why do I have such unease whenever you have that death stare?" Jessica cocked her brow as she stared at me through the mirror just above her head."It suits her," Kendrick's voice came on. I flickered my gaze over to his side, but his face was locked on whatever thing he was doing on his phone.I decided to ignore his remark, letting my body relax against the chair as the car sped through the street. I took a deep breath, turning my face to look outside the window as my hand draped the coat closer. His exquisite perfume twirled across my nostrils and my jaws hardened. Why was his scent so comforting?"So where do you want to go?" Jessica asked. Her hands were fixed on the wheel, but her eyes were locked on the mirror, watching me with concern on her face."Sterling Manor," I groaned, the words tasting bitter against my tongue.Jessica hovered her gaze towards me and I tilted my head. "Is there a problem?"She cleared her throat and then turned back to the road. "Isn't
