I turned up the speed on the treadmill as I ran the last round. I had been working out for an hour and thirty minutes now, and I already felt more energized than I had been the whole week. The pumping of my legs, and the sweat running down my body and my hair was such a thrill. As soon as my timer went off, I stopped the treadmill and jumped down. Grabbing a towel from the rack, I wiped my forehead and neck, and picked up a bottle of water. Now it was time for my fruit smoothie. There was a mini kitchen in the corner of the gym where I usually prepared my smoothie after a workout. I was at the family mansion, having arrived late last night. I did this whenever I wanted to spend the weekend here. Not by choice, but because once in a while I had to check up on my siblings. Speaking of the devil, the doors of the gym flew open and in walked Annalise. She was dressed in her jogging clothes, a huge smile plastered on her face. "Big bro!" She yelled, waving from where she stood. "Fancy seeing you here." By now she was standing next to me. Before I could respond, she had jumped me in a hug. I chuckled, returning the hug. "Annie, I'm sweating like a Thanksgiving turkey. You really should not be hugging me right now."She only laughed, shrugging. "Doesn't matter. I'm sure your sweat smells like vanilla," She winked. "At least that's what the ladies say."I rolled my eyes, lowering myself down to a mat and taking a gulp from my smoothie. "Yeah the ladies say a lot of things. It shouldn't come as a surprise now." Annie laughed, taking off her shoes and taking a seat beside me on the yoga mat. Annalise was my only sister and my youngest sibling. She had just turned eighteen and she was a bundle of joy. "When did you get in? We've missed you so much. Marcos would freak when he sees you. Have you…have you seen the others?" She asked again, her voice lower than before. By 'others' I knew she was talking about Dad. I tried to conceal my distaste. Just the thought of him was enough to ruin my day. If it were just me, I would not step foot into this mansion. But my siblings were important to me. I shook my head. "Not yet." Ever since the unfortunate incident that caused me to take over the family business, I had made a habit of spending the weekend here at home once a month. Everyone was broken in some way after what happened, and I realized the only way for us to heal was to stick together. I didn't want the same fate for Marcos and Annalise. I wanted to be there for them. "Dad would be glad to see you. It's been a while."I nodded. "As soon as I shower and get changed, I'll go catch up with the old man. What about you? What have you been up to? Asides basically living on I*******m, of course," I chipped in, desperate to change the subject. She squealed, laughing as she nudged my shoulder sharply. "Well it's my job, don't hate on the 'gram." I grimaced. "If you say so."After a while, Annie fixed me with a smug grin. "And what about your life? Any…new developments?"Usually, I wouldn't have thought anything of the question. But the way she said it sounded suspicious. "Uhh…not really. Work is the same, why?"She narrowed her eyes. "I'm not talking about work. I mean your life. Anything you want to tell me?"I frowned. What was she talking about? Nothing interesting had happened in the last few days. But she was talking like she knew something I didn't. "What are you talking about, Annie?" In response, she shook her head and spread out the tabloid in her hand, turning it over to show me the front page. I nearly choked on my smoothie as I saw what she was referring to. Right on the front page was a photo of me in the coffee shop, my lips locked with those of that redhead in what seemed to be a passionate kiss. I had completely forgotten about that. "Sparks fly as multibillionaire Enzo Hernandez is spotted in a romantic position with an unknown woman.""Enzo Hernandez, finally giving us a glimpse into his romantic life. And by the looks of things, he has really good taste.""Enzo Hernandez's steamy PDA session is officially ranked No. 1 on the hottest kiss of the season.""Enzo's mystery girlfriend finally revealed?"I read through all the captions aloud, my brows furrowed in confusion. I felt a sudden rush of anger. After years of keeping my love life private, it had all gone to waste all because of a kiss that was sprung on me! From a woman I had never seen in my life. I slapped my forehead, groaning. The internet would feed on this for weeks. And from what I was seeing on the tabloids, they were already certain that she was my lover. Oh God. "When were you gonna tell me?!" Annie yelled from beside me. "Were you even planning to tell me you were seeing someone! And she's so pretty too! You're being so unfair, Enzo."I sighed, trying to think of a way out of this. I couldn't exactly tell her it was a misunderstanding. The kiss looked so real. And knowing my sister, she would think I was only trying to avoid the subject. "Look Annie…" I trailed off, suddenly thinking of something. "Has Dad seen this?" She shook her head. "No, not yet. But I'm sure he'll be—""No, no, don't. I don't want anyone else seeing this, alright?"She frowned. "Jeez, why do you have to be so private about it? But fine I won't tell him. When can we meet her?" I pretended not to hear her, stretching and getting up from the mat. "Up you go, kid. I need to freshen up and get to other things."She rolled her eyes, shooting me daggers. "Fine," She chipped, before getting up and going back upstairs to the house. I turned back to the tabloid on the mat and picked it up. The pictures were everywhere, taken from different angles. For once I just wanted the paparazzi to get the fuck off my back. Raking a hand through my hair, my eyes flew to the woman's face in the picture. Who was she? And why had she suddenly decided to spring a kiss on me? And now because of her another rumor had started. And only God knows how long they would go on for. My jaw clenching, I squeezed the tabloid in my fist and tossed it into a trash can.JACQUELINEI didn't know why I was wishing so desperately for my mailbox to be empty this week. And although I knew for sure that I had mail, I still hoped for some kind of supernatural power to whisk them away. As I turned the key in the lock and pulled the mailbox open, I died a little inside at the sight of a pile of new mail, all compiled with the ones from last week. Groaning, I piled them up in my hand and unlocked the door to my apartment. It had been such a long day at work, mostly because I had decided to take a double shift. I was beginning to run low on cash so I needed to make some more. At this point, I couldn't even afford grocery anymore. And then there was dad's medical bills as well. I sighed heavily at the thought. Could my life get any more depressing than this? I think not. After I had undressed and showered, I proceeded to the kitchen. Of course I knew there wasn't anything special in the fridge, but I was hoping for a miracle, again. Unsurprisingly, the only thin
You know those specific moments in life when you get to see someone at a completely different side? when you always believed that you knew and loved them inside and out but an opportunity is presented and you get to see a different side of them. This is exactly what I was feeling right now. this is how I felt. my brother who I trusted in this world had just proven to be equally wicked and malicious as my father and my mother. even though my mum was always quiet in the presence of My Father, she was an equal accomplice in supporting all his decisions even though they meant harm to her children. when I learned about the marriage that my parents had forced me into, I accepted it because I believe that when Philip and my other brothers would come to learn about it, They would fight for me.I thought that it will be an equal game. JACQUELINEI frowned when I saw the third person today stare at me blankly for a few seconds and then turn away. What the fuck was going on? I had my first shift at the local library by 8am this morning, and ever since we opened up, people who came in kept staring at me like they'd seen a ghost. And it wasn't just the unfamiliar or new faces, even my coworkers kept giving me weird stares, and I just could not fathom why. At some point I began to wonder if I had something stuck in my hair or on my face.To keep myself at ease, I rushed to the bathroom the first chance I got. I shut the door behind me and faced the mirror. My hair was in perfect place, nothing was stuck in my teeth, I looked great. So why was everyone being so weird? I hated attention, anything at all that made me feel seen. The only time I liked attention was when I wanted to get it. So this staring contest bullshit was definitely not sitting right with me.Sighing, I decided I would just ignore it. I washed my hands an
JACQUELINE"Now, this? That is what a real man looks like," Chloe winked, turning her phone and showing it to us. A gasp escaped my lips at the sight of a tall, chocolate-skinned man on her Tinder profile. Wow. She had spent minutes raving about her newest date since we got to the café. I became so sure he wasn't at all good-looking like she kept on describing. But this man was a sight to behold. "Get it, girl!" Natalie whooped from beside me, snickering as she leaned forward, tapping Chloe's arm with a sense of urgency. "How was the sex?!" She asked, in what I knew she assumed was a whisper."Natalie!" I cautioned, my cheeks reddening a little as I instinctively glanced around the café we were sitting in. And sure enough, there were a handful of people already sending disapproving looks our way. Not that my friends would care anyway. "Ah, come on, Jackie," Natalie rolled her eyes. "Don't start with the prude behavior again. This is a sacred moment for me,and I very much want to he
JACQUELINE"You're going to do what?!" Nat and Chlo asked at the same time. They exchanged looks and then turned back to me. I shrugged, forcing a smirk.No. No, no, no. What have I done? I longed to facepalm but I held myself back. There was no going back now. I couldn't take it back. I wondered if kissing someone out of the blue counted as harassment. The last thing I needed was to get arrested this morning. Despite the anxiety creeping up on me, I faced my friends, folding my arms across my chest. Natalie observed me closely, and I could see the doubt in her eyes. After a few seconds of holding my gaze, she reached across the table to give Chloe a nudge. "She's bluffing. She couldn't possibly." She faced me. "You're a lot of things, Jackie, but you're definitely not a daredevil. I don't even think Chloe could do that, and then you? No way."Chloe nodded. "She's right, Jackie. Nat is the only one brave enough to do that. You don't have to prove anything. You know we're just teasing
ENZO"Nice doing business with you, Mr Hernandez," the woman sitting across from me said, smiling as she outstretched her hand toward me. When I took it in a handshake, she held on for a while longer, letting her fingertips graze the inside of my palm in a gentle caress. Laura Slater was a big name in the industry, and one of the few women I had ever done business with. And frankly speaking, her work was impressive. Which was why we had partnered up a week ago. We had no issues in business whatsoever, but apart from being an excellent business guru, Laura did little to hide the fact that she was interested in me. She stayed unnecessary longer in my office after each meeting, her handshakes lingered, and she didn't miss a chance to 'accidentally' rub up against me. It was amusing to watch her try so hard each time. Laura wasn't bad looking. On the contrary, she was quite exquisite, with curves in all the right places. JACQUELINEIf there was a way to dig my own grave and remain there forever, I would have jumped at the chance at this moment. It had been hours since I arrived at work, but I still couldn't stop thinking about what happened at the coffee shop. I had just kept cursing at myself the entire time. And I wanted to blame someone. It would make me feel better. But there was no one to blame but myself. It might have been easier had it been a dare from either of my best friends, but no, I had decided to play the bad bitch today. What had I been thinking, kissing a total stranger?I groaned, rubbing my head as I leaned back in my chair. Work was quite dull today. Usually, the clinic was up and running. But Fridays were generally dull here, so it didn't come as much of a surprise. I was about to check my phone for any new messages when I saw someone approach me. "Jacqueline, hey!" I gave a small smile. "Hi, Rob."Rob was a vet doctor. He worked full time in a different section of the clinic. H
