Some people can travel the depths of the ocean for their loved ones, I was standing in a foreign land surrounded by people I knew nothing about.
Taking a sharp breath in, I tried to find the man I was destined to love and spend my entire life with, but all I could see was the back of his head. His chocolate brown hair had some dark streaks between them, they were shorter than the last time I had seen him which was three days ago. The day he found out I was his destined soul mate. The day which would normally be the happiest day in the life of any werewolf.....except mine.
Three days...it was the time I spent laying wide awake at night just thinking about him. Dreaming with my eyes wide open about his deep grey eyes guarded by thick long eyelashes, the angular scar running down from the top of his left bushy brow. Werewolves heal faster than humans, especially alphas....the scar must had a wild story behind it...a story I might never be able to hear from him.
I stood at my place not daring to move, working in the palace I was taught from a young age not to do anything that might anger the werewolf king or the prince. The Alphas were no different, they demanded respect, and every wolf knew not to mess with an alpha. For someone like me, it was best to always be extra careful when near an alpha or any other wolf with a high rank.
The alpha was saying something to a man, I was trying to hear what was happening but no words were falling into my ears. Werewolves had supernatural hearing which meant they could hear even the faintest sound but I was not lucky enough to fall into that category. I was born normal....or that's what we initially thought but I was an embarrassment to my parents who were no ordinary wolves but the alpha and luna of the pack.
"Did you hear me?"
I stared at the man in front of me like an idiot, not knowing what he was talking about.
He squinted his eyes for a brief moment probably getting the answer, "Follow me."
I looked around one more time to find one particular man who did not utter a word to me on the four-hour journey but my eyes could only see the strange man Alpha was talking to.
"Can you hurry up a little, I have some work to do," the man said brushing the back of his hair with his hand awkwardly. I felt bad making him stand there because of me and started following him with a nod.
The tapping sound of my heels echoed as I walked behind the man inside the pristine mansion. It was not as enormous as the palace but it was nothing ordinary either. Everything looked expensive and was designed by a professional to match and compliment the things in the room. The vases were not traditional and large like the ones in the palace but had a modern touch to them. We crossed a vase with a silver-colored palm in it. The same thing was about the walls, they were icy white which complimented the blue curtains well.
"This is your room."
The man opened a random door. Before I could enter a feminine voice called me from behind. A tall woman strode my way taking long steps, she had bright sea green eyes, sharp as a knife, nothing could escape from those eyes and waves of sandy blonde hair that danced above her shoulders, the lady in the sweatpants and a loose pink t-shirt emitted strong rays of energy.
My hands immediately got clasped together in front of me, I suppressed the urge to move my eyes towards the ground in order to avoid staring directly at her. Werewolves with high authority saw it as a challenge and a fight was something I wanted to avoid at all costs, especially with a werewolf like her.
"You may leave now," she said the words in a commanding tone. The man walked away with his head slightly down to avoid looking into her eyes. My doubt was right, she was someone with a high rank.
Her sharp gaze stopped to analyze me, I felt her reading me from head to toe, just when I was expecting some brutal words to show me my true place she surprised me with a wide smile.
"I am Bernadette," I stared blankly at her hand in front of me but then went ahead to shake it with some force, "I am the beta of this pack. You must be Ruhee, welcome to your new home."
I was at a lack of words, she was the beta of Alpha Orion's pack. It was not usual for packs to have a female beta, because the chances of them having an alpha as their mate were high and it would mean leaving the pack without a beta once they find their alpha soul mate. It was a risk no alpha wanted to take.
Beta...the highest rank after the alpha. It meant she must be strong. I looked at the grinning lady in front of me skeptically, she appeared pretty harmless but so did Queen Lilith.
I shook away the thoughts of the evil Queen who tried to murder the entire royal family and killed so many people due to her hunger for power. She was the main reason for initiating the war between hunters and the werewolves.
"Thank you," I said in a soft voice after realizing she must be waiting for a response.
"Let me show you your room, you must be pretty tired."
Without waiting for any reaction she grabbed my hand and started dragging me behind her, I tried my best to keep up with her which was not easy in my floral dress that reached just above my knees. I did not get the chance to look around as she kept walking and I focused on not getting my feet tangled with each other.
"This is your room," she opened the door with the same broad smile on her face. I did not fail to notice the look in her eyes, even though there was a smile on her face the careful look in those eyes made me keep the walls up around myself.
I was not sure if she knew who I was but I knew she was being friendly due to her lack of knowledge about my abnormality.
It was always the same, people would befriend me but after finding out my truth they would start avoiding me like a plague. When I was a kid I had many friends but a while later those 'friends' turned into my bullies knowing well that I could not do much to defend myself.
I learned to live inside a protective wall, no one was allowed to enter and no one did.....except for one person...Eleanor. The Queen of werewolves who did not see me as an abomination or a pathetic excuse for a werewolf.
There was another person who despite being a member of the royal family tried his best to help me...Luca. The mere thought of his name stirred uneasy feelings inside my heart.
"What do you think?"
I realized the beta girl was talking to me. She was watching me with a questioning look on her face.
"This is great, thank you so much," I lied without thinking. It was just a guess, I hoped she was talking about the room and the smile on her face proved me right once again.
"If you need anything just find me or you can ask Orion," she laughed a little in the end.
My body tensed hearing his name. People were not allowed to say the name of wolves with higher rank without their titles. It meant the beta girl must be close to Alpha Orion. Something stirred inside my heart.
I gave her a nod.
Bernadette did not let the smile disappear from her face. The smile looked real not the fake formal one I always gave to people while welcoming them into the palace.
Why was she being so kind towards a nobody like me? Maybe my guess was right, she had no clue about my lack of wolf but as a beta, she knew about me being her alpha's soulmate.
I was dying to ask her more questions about alpha Orion but knew it was best if I stayed silent. I grew up watching my parents, they were the reason I always dreamed of finding my soul mate. The love they had was pure and true. But it was a dream that was shattered when I failed to turn into a werewolf. The hope of finding my soulmate did not die even after I was bullied continuously. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and years until one day when I finally accepted the truth of never finding my soul mate. I could still hear the mocking voice of the girl, 'werewolves have soul mate, you are an abomination even the moon goddess knows this. There is a reason you have no wolf, you do not belong here, even your mother hates you, do us a favor and die.'
I quickly came out of my thoughts and gave the same formal smile I had practiced for many years in the palace, "Thank you for welcoming me here Beta Bernadette."
Her smile widened further...something I did not know was even possible, "You can call me Bernie."
I nodded keeping the same smile on my face.
"It was really nice to meet you but I have to be at the training grounds in ten minutes."
Bernadette rushed out of the door without waiting for me to say anything else. I quietly closed the door and turned around to finally analyze the room. The room had the same icy walls, the wall behind the bed had some rough grey patterns on it. There was a door in front of me that led to the balcony, there was another door that probably led to the bathroom. The room was exactly what I expected it to be.
I went ahead to take a seat on the soft bed, there was no use in making myself comfortable in the room. Just in a few hours, the alpha would throw me out of his house.
I removed the phone from my pocket.
'Did you reach there?'
'How is everything?'
'You do not have to stay there if you don't want to.'
With a smile, I read the message from Eleanor.
'Everything is good here.' I texted her back.
She tried her best to stop me from leaving the palace, but everyone knew it was of no use. I was alpha Orion's soulmate and it was something even the king could not change. I put the phone back into my pocket. Eleanor gave me instructions to always hide my phone and call her in case I decided to run away from my soulmate, something she did. It happened because of a misunderstanding but it proved how strong she was, she managed to survive alone between werewolves despite being a human.
I kept taking deep breaths watching the door, waiting for it to open and reveal alpha Orion even though I knew it would not happen. He barely looked at me throughout the journey.
My stomach grumbled and I realized it had been hours since I had my last meal.
After debating inside my head for the next fifteen minutes I decided to go out and find something to eat myself.
I opened the door and started taking light steps to avoid the tapping sound of my heels. I started walking on a random path trusting my gut but also remembering the paintings and vases on the way in case I failed to find the kitchen and had to return.
After walking for almost ten minutes, I found the stairs.
"You are new."
I froze.
"I...uh..."
The girl let out a laugh, showing her slightly chipped front tooth, "Relax, I am not gonna call the alpha."
I could not smile after hearing the mention of alpha.
"I am Aria. What are you doing here anyway?"
The girl looked young with her lavender hair in a side braid. She had big curious grey eyes and a grin on her lips. She was a werewolf, her hands were folded in front of her as she observed me.
"I am Ruhee. I was searching for the kitchen," my voice was soft and not too loud.
"It's that way," she pointed towards my right, she smacked her lips together, "come one I'll show you."
"Did you come here with alpha? You must be his guest, that can't be right, alpha does not invite guests into his personal house. You must be Chelsea's guest."
The girl seems to be having a discussion with herself. The last name grabbed my interest.
"Chelsea?"
"Yes," she scrunched her dark thin brows together, "don't you know her?"
I shook my head.
"She is our future Luna."
My stomach dropped instantly. I felt like being punched into my stomach. Why was I here if he had a Luna? I wanted to laugh at myself, what was I thinking? of course, he had a Luna. He was not going to live with a wolfless girl like me, fate played a cruel game with us. "Are you alright?" I blinked my eyes a couple of times, "Yes.""You sure?" "Yes.""Ohkay..." she did not sound convinced. I lifted my lips upward giving her the smile that could fool anyone, "I am not really hungry right now. It was great meeting you, I will return to my room now.""Are you sure? I can take you to the kitchen if you want."I shook my head keeping the smile on my face. Taking two steps at once I tried to get back to the room as fast as I could. Closing the door behind me I instantly started taking deep breaths, what was happening here? Why was I in his house when there was no place for me in his life? I kept my eyes closed as I sat on the floor near the bed, this was not supposed to happen. I wa
It's been 24 hours since I stepped into my flawless prison. For anyone else, it would be a dream come true....finding your true soulmate, living with him in his pack but it was not my story. My soulmate would not glance in my direction, he would not step inside the room if he felt my presence. He would rather share his time with his future luna, I never thought I would envy someone I had never met. Bernadette tried her best to spend time with me, she tried to make me talk about anything but I was not ready to open my heart to anyone again. It was not needed, I was just a guest here who would leave in a matter of days. I stared at the dark screen of my phone, it was useless. I was pretending everything was fine in front of Eleanor. She did not need anything else on her plate right now, being a Queen was already taking a lot out of her. Slowly, I closed my eyes letting sleep overtake my senses as I slept alone on the cold bed. I stood bare feet on barren land, my feet touched the h
The thoughts inside my head were enough to slow me down. Filling my lungs with air, I started walking. The hallway seemed to be longer than any path I had traveled. I was walking with only one name in my head but I had no idea where to find him. There was no one around which was not a surprise as not many people lived in the mansion.I could not figure out where Alpha Orion would be, I looked back when I heard a tiny noise but as a result, I collided with the large empty vase. I took the support of the wall quickly and stood up straighter, praying no one witnessed it. "Are you alright?" a feminine voice that I had never heard before fell into my ears and soon a soft touch was on my shoulder. I tried to keep my eyes on the vase closing my hands into a fist, I dug my nails inside my skin.I nodded without looking at the person."Are you sure honey? Are you looking for someone?" I finally looked at the woman. The woman with hair like a beautiful sunset, and walnut-colored eyes with fr
The dark screen of the phone stared back at me, the constant silence inside the room was a constant reminder of my loneliness....I could never be a part of this pack. I bit the inside of my cheeks as I tried calling Eleanor once again. "Hi...I am so sorry I could not answer earlier," this time Eleanor's voice came from the other side, instantly bringing a smile to my face. "What's happening in the palace?" "Well, let's see. Everything is almost a mess. We still have to get married and as the date is approaching my stress is increasing too and don't get me started about Mr. King of the werewolves, he is always busy." I did not have the heart to stop El and tell her anything about my problems when she had all of those troubles. "You will be fine, just remember how much you both love each other," I smiled, "this time will pass, he needs to take care of his people as well." I heard some shuffling from Eleanor's side, I assumed she must be doing something else too. I cleared my thr
I turned my head quickly to see the stranger. A girl was standing with an amusing smile just a few steps away, Long pin straight luscious light brown hair reached below her waist, her eyes were a combination of green and yellow as she stepped closer I got to see her flawless skin. She walked gracefully in her floral dress like a stream of water flowing down from the mountains. Her eyes sparkled with a smile as she stood in front of me, "Who are you hiding from?" I looked at the young girl speechlessly, "Why do you think I am hiding from someone?" She let out a small rich laugh covering her mouth with her fingers as she laughed, "Look around, this is not a place where you see people walking around daily just for fun." She grew serious suddenly, "Most people can not even find this place. I guess this place picked you for a reason." She sat down on the grass and started looking at the water with a smile. I followed her action and took a seat next to her, "This is a forest, and wer
I kept sitting in the room wondering about what had happened. Alpha Orion talked to me. But why? Did he notice my absence? The thought brought a small smile to my lips. Was there finally some hope? The dinner was sent to the room by Alpha Orion. I finished everything without thinking about anything else for the first time in days. The dinner had everything, it was organized unlike the plate Bernadette had prepared for me earlier. I started chewing the brownie slowly, my thoughts wandered around the place I went to earlier. There was something about the place which I could not explain, there was a unique feeling. I felt drawn to that forest...and the girl. Flora.Who was she?I never got the chance to ask her anything else, what was she doing there all by herself? She was not scared of being there alone. Wolves were known to live in the lap of nature but the forest was not for everyone. I drank some water and inhaled a deep breath. A knock on the door startled me, I glanced at
"How did you know I was standing there?" I went ahead still confused and took a seat next to the strange girl.I was surprised, she did not turn around and yet noticed my presence. She could not have listened to my footsteps with all this noise around her. Werewolves had a super hearing but something was not adding up. She gave me a side look, there was a smirk playing on her lips, "You don't need eyes to see everything."I frowned at hearing this."What do you mean?"She laughed in response."It is a good day to be outside."I smiled while looking around, letting my eyes wander around the serene scenery. Flora was right, water, birds, trees, everything was perfect here. All the doubts left my head. It was the right decision to be here. But what about Alpha Orion? What was happening with him and Chelsea? Was Bernadette right about them?"What are you thinking about?" I did not turn towards Flora but knew she was looking at me. "My life."There was a pause, she was still starin
"Hey, where were you?"I stretched my lips to give a wide smile. I did not bother trying to make it look real this time, "Just looking at the wedding preparations of Alpha Orion."Bernadette opened her mouth but closed it shut again instantly."So, when is the big day? Am I invited?" I did not hide the sour tone."Ruhee.." it was the first time I had seen Bernadette speechless. Maybe it was the first time as well when she saw me say something like this. "This is not what you think."I shook my head and moved away from her. All I wanted was to grab my phone and call Eleanor... to tell her everything, I just wanted to get away from the place where I was nothing but a burden...where I was nothing for my soulmate. "I think I know everything now, you are just trying to cover up everything your alpha is doing. I understand this is your duty...I accepted my fate a long time ago, I know Alpha Orion does not want me.""Are you crazy?" Bernadette's eyes grew wide hearing this, "this was decid
I froze as soon as I entered the house. "What...?"Orion stood next to me, "We need to talk to you about something."My heartbeat increased, did something bad happen? Celia was sitting with no smile on her face, next to her was Ruth with a similar expression accompanied by Oliver and Rose. "Is everything alright?" I asked Orion, "Is it about the red moon?"He shook his head, "No, everything is fine, love, just calm down and have a seat."Bernadette gave a sharp nod to Orion, "I will be outside." She was in her beta mode, something was not right.Did they know about what happened near the river? I gulped thinking about it but tried not to show the fear on my face as I sat down in front of the witches. Orion was holding my hand the entire time while his other hand was on my back rubbing circles. "The resemblance..." Celia shed a tear which she wiped quickly."What is happening here?" The silence was making me feel suffocated. "It's best if Celia starts from the beginning," Orion g
My feet kept moving, I knew where I had to stop. Orion and I were in the middle of our conversation when he said he figured something out but he had to leave before he could explain anything. We were not getting much time to talk or discuss anything, the red moon was above our heads and even though no one was showing it, we were all scared. I was breathing hard from taking two steps at once and my heart was racing but no matter how much I tried I could not shake the feeling away. A smile made its way to my lips when I saw the girl's long brown hair touching the ground as she sat on the edge of the river. "Flora.""You are late, Ruhee."I paused, her words had no emotions."Are you alright, Flora?" I sat down next to her to take a look at her face. Her skin looked pale as she stared into the distance. I followed her eyes she was staring at the other side of the forest. Everything about her was the same except there was no glow on her face, her eyes had lost their spark. I felt
I woke up with a heavy feeling in my head, it was like I had not slept in days which would not be wrong. The nagging feeling inside my stomach was not leaving, the dream I had was too real to be a nightmare. Something was not right, it was not about the blood moon. I rubbed my head and looked at Orion's side of the bed only to find it empty. With a sigh, I picked up the note that he had left on the table, 'I had to make some preparations for the ritual, will be back soon.'The ritual. What was the ritual anyway? How could Orion trust these witches so much?I knew what I was going to do next. I quickly got ready and ran towards the place where the witches were staying. Before getting closer I put on the smile I had mastered in years. The man who came with Celia last night was sitting on the ground, he threw me a look but did not say a word and continued his work. He was carefully removing petals from a plant I had never seen before in this pack. The flowers were blood red and whit
I did not know what I was expecting, maybe someone old, cruel-looking with wrinkly skin and evil eyes but I was not expecting the happy lady in front of me followed by a few others.A woman who appeared to be in her late thirties entered first, she was the shortest out of all but had the biggest smile. Her dark maroon, almost black dress touched the ground as she walked, she had jet-black hair pulled back tightly, and not a single hair was out of place. Her green eyes were barely open from the wide smile she had on her round face. "Oh, my dear, Orion, what a lovely welcome.""Celia, this is my Luna, Ruhee."Celia, the lady who appeared to be their leader stood in front of me."Ruhee," she repeated my name."Thank you for coming here to help us," I said in a soft voice.I highly doubted she heard my words as she almost touched my face with her hand, "You.""Mother, I think we should get some rest and start our work without wasting any time," a girl interrupted Celia before her hand co
"Why would you do that?" I welcomed Alpha Orion with the question as he entered the room. He did not answer and closed the door. "I am talking to you," I repeated, not letting my eyes wander from his face. He did not reply once again and put the phone on the table. I got out of the bed and stood in front of him blocking his path with my hands crossed over my chest. "Alpha Orion, care to explain why you announced about us in front of the entire pack?" My voice was still not loud, I wanted answers but it did not mean I had to be loud. "I did the right thing, princess." He started searching for something. I held his arm with my hand firmly which was surprisingly new for me as well and the action was unusual for him too based on the look on his face. "I think I deserve some answers." He licked his lips and guided me to sit on the bed. "I am fine," I was getting annoyed by his actions. "I was not telling anyone the truth because of your safety, people of this pack had accepted C
There was a loud growl that made the ground beneath my feet shake as I tried to stand. I quickly moved my eyes toward the two wolves but only one of them was standing now. It was a large brown wolf, it was the darkest shade of brown I had ever seen with some streaks of black between the fur. This wolf was different as compared to the mustard-brown wolf that was on the ground...not moving at all.The brown wolf kept staring at me as though making sure I was fine. "I am okay, Orion."Orion's wolf let out a low sound. My eyes fell on the other wolf once again and I quickly looked away. Soon the sound of the cracking of bones entered my ears. After a few more minutes Alpha Orion was standing in front of me with a cold expression on his face. "I..."He did not let me say anything else and just scooped me in his arms like I weighed nothing.I gulped."I have no idea who that wolf was."Silence."I do not know why he thought I was taking their Luna's place."Once again no response. But
"Hey, I need to talk to you about something."Orion put his phone away and turned to give me his full attention, "I was just coming to find you, I wanted to talk to you as well."I frowned a little but nodded as a sign for him to continue."You go first.""It is fine, I know you must have something important to say about the red moon or the pack," I smiled. Orion returned the smile while shaking his head a little bit but all of a sudden his face became serious. "Witches will be in our pack soon.""What?"He nodded, "I know we don't have much time left and they have decided to help us. We need to make sure everything goes fine here. Witches could be hard to deal with, they don't like to be a part of others' issues."I inhaled a breath. Soon I found his hand on my cheek, his thumb caressing my skin very gently in a circular motion, "Hey, it's okay. I am here with you."I licked my lips and put my hand over his, "I...I had a nightmare."His face hardened and a dark look appeared in hi
I sat silently gazing at the sky, birds had started chirping a melodious song but it sounded like the tone of death to me. No matter how much I tried to convince myself I could not act normally or focus on the blood moon. What if it was just the beginning and I could not stop others from dying either? "I can not protect these people," I said out loud as the reality started sinking in. My breaths started getting heavy and I started feeling uneasy. No matter how much I tried to take deep breaths, I felt like drowning in the ocean. "No," a voice entered my ears, "we are going to protect everyone together.""I want to be alone.""No, you don't. I know you lost a friend and you're mourning his death.""Murder," I said through gritted teeth, "it was a murder.""Princess," he held my wrist but I pulled my hand away from him, "I know you are hurt and angry. You have all the rights to be. I am with you, tell me what you want.""You are not with me, you have no idea what I am feeling righ
I held the stem attached to the flower tightly, luckily there were no thorns to pierce through my skin. I opened the drawer and put it with the other yellow rose, but today it was red. Orion had been leaving a flower on the table next to my bed every day with a sorry since I stopped talking to him. The blood moon was only 5 days away and we had no progress so far. A knock on the door startled me before I could respond the door burst open and Bernadette stood in front of me."What happened?" Sudden fear rose inside my chest. She kept one hand on the doorknob as she stood silently."Bernadette?" I questioned again taking a step in her direction while getting dark thoughts inside my head. "It's Arwin..."My heart stopped."What about him?" I took another step, "where is he?"She once again fell silent but this time I did not wait and tried to get past her but she held my arm."Listen to me, he's no more."I let out a humorless chuckle, "What are you saying? Have you gone insane? He
