The ring that sat alone in the dark box was a beautiful sight. Almost otherworldly, like it had been snatched from a fairy’s grasp. A beautiful kite red Ruby gleamed in the center with smaller purple diamonds framing it, and other stones that seemed to change color whenever he moved it under the dim light.

He pulled the ring out and replaced the box in his pocket. “It took the jeweler a while to understand what I wanted done, but it’s a perfect execution isn’t it?” He said softly, as he fidgeted with the ring. Then he looked up at me. “Perfect…for you.”

“Pierce, what are you doing?” The words tumbled out of my mouth in a rush.

“Take a wild guess, Myra.” I swallowed. “Let me make it easier for you.”

Time seemed to slow around us as Pierce, with his eyes locked on mine, dropped down on one knee, with the ring extended to me.

“You think you can survive a couple years with me?” He asked, low enough that I was the only one who heard him.

I glanced towards my friends, confusion and trepidat

“Fine.” I opened the fridge and pulled out an entire Tub of gelato. And put a scoop in a bowl. I turned to look at him to see if he knew where I was going with this.God I was patient, because I came him a few seconds to make the connection. I mean there wasn’t anything else that could happen to gelato that would count as a punishment. His eyes widened and I let myself smile. “No.” He said, more in disbelief than objection as I took out the bottle of ketchup from the fridge, opened it and emptied a LOT onto the gelato sitting in the bowl. “Myra…” he pleaded, and I smacked the bottom of the bottle to get more out. Quite unnecessary, but I liked the dramatic effect. I grabbed a spoon and mixed the whole thing together, gagging only once before I pushed the plate to him. “Eat that”“Myra.”“That’s the only apology I’ll take.” I crossed my hand over my chest. “Eat it, and maybe I’ll forgive you. You don’t have to though, it’s not important that I forgive you.”“Bloody hell, Myra.” He c

I was still writhing in pain by the time I got placed on the gurney and led through the hospital doors. A gas mask was placed over my face and everything seemed to fade away. The pain felt like a distant hum and everywhere sounded quieter. Through blurry eyes, I watched Pierce engaging in what looked like a heated conversation with the doctor. He glanced at me a few times, and each time he did it, he would run his hands anxiously through his hair. He still had on his night clothes, which made him fit right in with the nurses that swarmed me, poking needles in my arms or flashing bright lights in my eyes. Finally he entered the room with me. “What happened,” I asked, my words slurring. “Is my baby okay? Why does it hurt?” Why did it hurt actually? Currently I could barely feel anything. He glanced at the nurses before he took my hand. “You’re going into labour, Myra.”I blinked up at him sluggishly, “That can’t be possible, the baby’s just…she’s not old enough to be out here.” I tr

He grinned up at me. “Of course you get to choose. You've been with her the longest of both of us. It is well within your rights…unless you want to name her something like tinkerbell, then I would have to step in. For her sake.” He joked.I chortled, “Tink is a rather cute name actually.”His eyebrows went up to his forehead. “As a nickname, sure.”“I like the sound of pretzel, what do you think Myra?” Lily deadpanned, and I could tell Pierce was taking her seriously. I laughed a little trying not to shake so much.He seemed to understand she was kidding after that and calmed down. “So, tell us. What would you like us to call her.”Hannah and Lily looked down at me expectedly, and I chewed the inside of my cheek thoughtfully. I had been thinking about names for a while, but everything I ever thought of seemed to pale in comparison to the little bundle I was cradling against my chest.“Okay…” I started, unsure as I glanced at her, like I wanted her approval too. She nestled into me and

I slid down to the floor opposite the door and waited, watching as people went out and others moved inside the room. Ignoring others that glanced at me as they passed, and with every second that passed , I felt my heart sink. I had to call someone. The first person on my mind was Pierce. I tried his number several times but got no answer. I tried Lily’s next and after the fourth time, she answered. I could not help the sob that escaped my lips immediately I heard her voice.“Yvette is having siziures.” I told her after she asked what’s wrong. “I don’t know what to do, I-I’m scared Lily.”“I’m on my way, M. Is Pierce there yet? He called me a while ago, to tell me to meet you. Is he back?”“He’s not even answering his phone.” I sobbed. The doctor came out of the room, spotting me immediately. He removed his gloves as he approached me. “Miss Thompson. Are you alone?”“Is Yvette okay?” I asked ignoring his question. He looked down the hall ignoring my question and I felt a piece of my

I placed my hand over my belly as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My hair was tied down in a bun at the back of my head and there was no trace of makeup on my face. The simple black dress I had on matched my puffy eyes and mood overall. Lily knocked on the bathroom door softly. “You can’t keep them waiting forever.” She said softly and I let out a breath. It had been two painful days since Yvette left and it was time to talk about burial arrangements. I had clearly stated what I wanted for my daughter but the hospital had refused, stating that since Pierce was the father, it had to be both our decision to make. He and the doctor were waiting in the office for my arrival but I could not get my feet to move. To walk into that room and talk about the…the disposal of my child.“Myra?” Lily called again.“I’m coming.” I answered and brushed my hand over my face, before I opened the door. It took me a week of constantly ignoring texts and calls from well meaning people to decide what I wanted to do. Among those calls and texts were reporters or journalists who wanted the gist about me and Pierce’s engagement.“We broke up.” I said simply the first time I answered a reporter’s call before I ended it.Throughout the week I had slept, wept, and ate in the dark. I didn’t want to listen to any other sounds except the beating of my own heart. I chewed ibuprofen in my mouth as I climbed the flight of stairs to get to the new set O’Malley was working in. After all the sympathetic looks I had gotten walking into the building, I did not want to interact with anyone who thought the bags under my eyes were because of my so-called broken engagement with Pierce. When I walked into the set, I was greeted by different shades of brown and green. The room had been decorated to look like the woods, not to mention all the green screen background. The first person that noticed me was t

I rolled my eyes at her. “Not my fault. She started it.” She started it from the moment she tried to drown me on set. “Can’t say I blame you. The nerve of her trying to rub it in. So cruel.” “I still think it was a foolish reaction.” Lily added. “And Pray tell how it is?” She looked between the three of us like she didn’t realize she had said it outloud, then she shrugged. “I donno, maybe don’t annoy the crazy psycho who has been trying to kill you for so long.” “Okayyy,” Hannah butted in and grabbed my hand. “Let’s get some food into our systems and not talk about this anymore. But while I ate, I kept glancing at Lily. My phone rang and answered. “Hello?” I said, still sounding irritated. “Miss Myra thompson?” A woman asked. “Yes, this is her.” I heard some noise in the background and then Liwayway’s voice. “Myra.” She said and I sat up. Hannah and Lily looked at my change in posture and stopped the conversation. “Hey Liway. What’s wrong? Are the test results back?

My eyes raked over him with hate.He was barefoot and in a simple pair of jeans and t-shirt. “Where is she?” I yelled “where are you hiding her!”“Who? Ruth? She left a day after the baby…she’s not here. What-““Left to where? Oh, I see. Her job is done, so she can just waltz out of here? How much did you pay her, Pierce?” I yelled, “How much did you pay her to slowly kill my baby. What price did you put on the death of our child?”His hands moved to grab my shoulders but I shoved him away. He took a step back but it had nothing to do with my strength. “I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”“Just stop it. Stop the fucking act! He had the guts to look at me like I was the problem in this situation. His bushy brows were furrowed as he scowled, his eyes showing equal parts of desire and annoyance. Ditto.“Going out with Hannah?” He questioned. “This isn’t your usual filming getup.“Well excuse me, fashion police, but you need to get out of my house!” He looked at my face finally, then around the house like cockroaches were crawling all over the place. “Really Myra? This? This is what you settled on finally? It’s a dump. Why didn’t you take the apartment I offered?”“And be indebted to you even more? No fucking thank you.” It felt so hot in the house. I had Pierce to blame for that. He was only standing by the doorway, but he managed to fill the room so far all I could see was him, all I could smell was him, all I could think for crying out loud was him! I wanted him gone. “Now if you would be kind enough…LEAVE.”“You can’t be serious Myra.” He started, moving into the room further. “did you even have a look a

I typed the name into google, having never heard the name before. Scrolling and reading while I peeled another pepperoni slice off my pizza. The mythological wife of Yahweh according to the Canaanite pantheon. Mother of sacred trees…Erased from history like most divine females. I slowed my chewing till it came to a halt. That last bit sounded familiar.A notification from Carter popped up on my screen. I opened it.-I understand that it could be taken the wrong way. But I consider her a powerful deity. Queen of the heavens. I think looking at you feels like I’m looking at the sky. I sat up on the bed and pushed my tongue through my cheek as I read the text over and over, trying to find a double meaning, or hidden insult. There were none.-I like Asherah. I texted back.l-I’m relieved. More dots hovered and I waited. He left the office- after acting like piss, I might add- then he returned even more pissy and handed me back the documents he had me painstakingly work on, and told me to meet you here.”“So yes?” That meant

I moved back, my eyes glued on Roberto as he stalked me with a wild look in his eyes. My legs hit the edge of the bedframe and I let myself fall back just as he reached for me. He creeped up my body slowly, hovering over my lips. I crashed my lips onto his a split second later. Here, at this moment, I wasn’t Myra. I was Amber Farnworth, a woman who had a harem of men at her beck and call. She didn’t love a man for over four years without him reciprocating, or lose a child.I twisted my head to the side to evade Roberto’s lips and he buried kisses in my neck. A simple movement caught my eye. Past the camera pointed on us on the bed, past the other stage crew or actors…Pierce? My heart skipped, filling me with more need than I could summon for this scene. Could it be him? I wasn’t sure. A cast member shifted slightly and when they returned back to their former position the figure was gone.“Myra, don’t break the fourth wall.” O’Malley called through the mega phone and Roberto sighed in

Hannah helped me lift the last of my things up the stairs to my new apartment. “So you like him?” Hannah asked as we rested at the top of the stairs. I had explained Carter’s words on an attempt to sort through what I was feeling. I didn’t know what it was. I chucked it up to guilt for treating him the same way Pierce treated me; assuming the worst of me. “I don’t like him. I’m just…conflicted.” Don’t get defensive, it’s not bad if you do like him.” I let out an exasperated sigh. “I just lost a child Hannah, not to mention the breakup with Pierce. I can’t ‘like’ anyone right now.” We picked up the bean bag and waddled all the way to my apartment. Heaving as we dropped the bag in the center of the living room. “God you should’ve asked Derek to help.” “Nope.” I answered, collapsing on the bag. As he drive me home after the sordid affair in the parking lot, he informed me that he was quitting. Derek was a good guy, and I would miss his company, but this gave us an opportun

“This looks rather cozy.” I said, stepping a step back and hitting Carter. His hands went around my waist to steady me. “It does? I didn’t notice.” There was a hint of laughter in his voice. When I glanced up, he was smiling at me. “I hear they have good food. We grab a bite and then we leave, it isn’t a big deal.” He cocked his head to the side, “not unless you make it.”“No it’s fine.” I stepped away from him, relieved that his hands freed me easily. I wasn’t even dressed for that kind of thing. I looked out of place here and I liked it that way. A server stopped by us with a smile and spoke to Carter while I hung in the background. When they were done speaking, he led me to a booth not far from the entrance. A smart choice since it eliminated the cozy feel.“So do you checkout new restaurants often?” I asked after we had been given menus. The crinkles in his eyes deepened. “I do, actually. Jace has acting as a hobby and I fancy myself some kind of food critic.” I raised a brow. “T

“O’Malley is certainly working us to death.” Jace said as he collapsed on the ground in the part of the woods we were shooting. I was wearing a sleeveless shirt and would rather avoid the sand totally, but was too exhausted to mind. I joined him on the floor, resting my head on his belly. Sophia, Bianca, Roberto and the others joined us on the floor or rested their backs against the trees.“How’s your play date with your brother going?” I asked Jace.I felt him shift under me. “Perfect. We are supposed to have one today actually.”“Is it cancelled?” A little part of me wanted to see Carter. Roberto saying he was flirting with me had forced the idea i to my head and it wouldn’t leave. Was I really so stuck up on Pierce that I couldn’t tell when a guy was openly flirting with me?“I’m trying to figure out how to cancel.”“You don’t want to join your family’s company.”“I’m just not ready for that part of my life yet. I chewed on my lip and glanced back at the set. “I’ll have to decline. O’Malley’s is in the zone right now and could call me and Roberto anytime soon, I don’t wanna go AWOL on him.”Carter nodded sharply, his smile still bright and disarming. “Of course, I understand. Can’t steal the star of the show without warning. Maybe next time?”“For sure.” I smiled back. It felt good to smile.“See you around, Myra.” He gave a small salute in Roberto’s direction and walked away, my eyes still trainedbon his figure. I thought about how different he was from Pierce, with the charming easy smiles and calming demeanor. Carter still kept this boyish high school vibe, and he made it work.“Now that is how a rich man flirts.” Robert said. He had placed his hands behind his head and was smirking at me. The fabric of his shirt had gone up, exposing an inch of skin. I peeled my eyes away from there and focused on his words.“Flirting?”“Oh yeah.” I scoffed, “he wasn’t flirting with me, he’s just really

I stood at the hospital reception desk, my eyes fixed on the woman typing away on her computer. "Room or common room?" I asked, forcing my voice to be louder than it could go.She scrolled through the screen, her brow furrowed in concentration. "She's in her room today. She wanted to stay in bed."I nodded, settling back into the dull ache in my chest. I trudged up the stairs, and as I reached my mother's room, pushed open the door and stepped inside. It was dimly lit, I noticed a live plant in her room with wilting leaves. My mother sat in a chair, her legs swathed in a vibrant blanket with small flowery squares that I recognised as the project she had been working on. My lips tugged upwards briefly and my heart swelled. At least one of us was able to finish what we started.I swallowed hard, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill over. When I breathed out, it felt easier.“That looks gorgeous, mum.” I commented, and planted a kiss on the top of her hair. “You finally
