I placed my hand over my belly as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My hair was tied down in a bun at the back of my head and there was no trace of makeup on my face. The simple black dress I had on matched my puffy eyes and mood overall.

Lily knocked on the bathroom door softly. “You can’t keep them waiting forever.” She said softly and I let out a breath.

It had been two painful days since Yvette left and it was time to talk about burial arrangements. I had clearly stated what I wanted for my daughter but the hospital had refused, stating that since Pierce was the father, it had to be both our decision to make.

He and the doctor were waiting in the office for my arrival but I could not get my feet to move. To walk into that room and talk about the…the disposal of my child.

“Myra?” Lily called again.

“I’m coming.” I answered and brushed my hand over my face, before I opened the door. I smiled at her before I passed her and led the way to Dr. Eli.

It took me a week of constantly ignoring texts and calls from well meaning people to decide what I wanted to do. Among those calls and texts were reporters or journalists who wanted the gist about me and Pierce’s engagement.“We broke up.” I said simply the first time I answered a reporter’s call before I ended it.Throughout the week I had slept, wept, and ate in the dark. I didn’t want to listen to any other sounds except the beating of my own heart. I chewed ibuprofen in my mouth as I climbed the flight of stairs to get to the new set O’Malley was working in. After all the sympathetic looks I had gotten walking into the building, I did not want to interact with anyone who thought the bags under my eyes were because of my so-called broken engagement with Pierce. When I walked into the set, I was greeted by different shades of brown and green. The room had been decorated to look like the woods, not to mention all the green screen background. The first person that noticed me was t

I rolled my eyes at her. “Not my fault. She started it.” She started it from the moment she tried to drown me on set. “Can’t say I blame you. The nerve of her trying to rub it in. So cruel.” “I still think it was a foolish reaction.” Lily added. “And Pray tell how it is?” She looked between the three of us like she didn’t realize she had said it outloud, then she shrugged. “I donno, maybe don’t annoy the crazy psycho who has been trying to kill you for so long.” “Okayyy,” Hannah butted in and grabbed my hand. “Let’s get some food into our systems and not talk about this anymore. But while I ate, I kept glancing at Lily. My phone rang and answered. “Hello?” I said, still sounding irritated. “Miss Myra thompson?” A woman asked. “Yes, this is her.” I heard some noise in the background and then Liwayway’s voice. “Myra.” She said and I sat up. Hannah and Lily looked at my change in posture and stopped the conversation. “Hey Liway. What’s wrong? Are the test results back?

“Open the fucking door!” I yelled and pounded on the door again while Jace watched. “Hey! Myra?” I heard Pierce’s voice and turned to look at him. My eyes raked over him with hate.He was barefoot and in a simple pair of jeans and t-shirt. “Where is she?” I yelled “where are you hiding her!”“Who? Ruth? She left a day after the baby…she’s not here. What-““Left to where? Oh, I see. Her job is done, so she can just waltz out of here? How much did you pay her, Pierce?” I yelled, “How much did you pay her to slowly kill my baby. What price did you put on the death of our child?”His hands moved to grab my shoulders but I shoved him away. He took a step back but it had nothing to do with my strength. “I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”“Just stop it. Stop the fucking act! I can't take it anymore!” Angie hurried to us, clearly drawn by my yelling, and stopped close to Jace. “Myra,” she said softly and started walking towards me.“Stay away from me!” I screamed, and she stop

I kept on walking, missing the rest of their conversation. My sole focus at that point was getting Ruth. “Jace, could you call the cops.” I threw over my shoulder. He said nothing but from the corner of my eye I saw him pull out his phone. We climbed into the car again and I typed in Ruth’s address into the gps. Pierce was in his car by the time Jace rolled out of the compound. I vibrated in my seat, as the seconds ticked by, checking the gps to make sure we were still going the right way. Once again, I opened the door and got out as soon as Jace slowed in front of the apartment building, taking steady steps towards the entrance. Two teenages lounged close to the door smoking, and looked at our little party inquisitively as I passed them. I hurried up the stairs ignoring the burn in my legs. Finally, I reached the top floor and stopped at Ruth’s door. “This is it.” I told Jace and tried the lock. It didn’t budge. “She can’t be gone.” I tried the door again. “Fuck!” I cursed and s

After finding Ruth’s body in her apartment, I stayed indoors for the rest of the week, just waiting; waiting to get my baby’s urn, waiting for O’Malley to call me in.Sometimes I would seem perfectly fine. I would be making coffee one minute and the next second I’m shoving the coffee machine off the table. That was something I had to repair now before I left the motel. I just had so much anger in me and sometimes it would boil over. Ruth was not supposed to be dead. She was not supposed to be liquified, in her bedroom, with a suicide note beside her.The note had been an apology. And not just to me. It said that even while she worked under a hospital, she had this weird need to poison mothers. She had said that she was twenty three when doctors told her that she could not have a child of her own, and she held that grudge, taking children from what she termed ‘undeserving mothers’.My Yvette was just one more kid in a line of deaths. It made me furious . But why would she kill herself

I dodged just in time, avoiding her knife as it slashed across my hoodie. Suddenly, the memory of the press assailant clicked into place - Sarah was the woman with the knife who tried to stab me. I didn't have time to process the thought, though, as her blade sliced through the air again. Everytime she missed, she let out a frustrated scream. I threw my bag in her face, and lunged, tackling her to the ground. We wrestled, my hands desperately trying to pry the knife from her grasp, and then her knee slipped between us and struck me with a sharp blow to the stomach.Wincing, I let go of her cluthef my stomach. That gave Sarah all the opening she needed. With a swift motion, she rolled on top of me, pinning my hands under her knees, her eyes gleaming with a sinister light.“You should’ve taken the deal.” She laughed, and drove the blade down towards me.Just as it reached my face, a hand came into view and the knife sank into it, stopping mere inches from my face. My rescuer growled in

I’d prefer we not talk at all, but refusing him could cause unnecessary drama.I led the way to the changing closet and shut the door, then moved to a wardrobe to keep the distance between us wide.“It’s good to see that you're back at work. Hopefully O’Malley hasn’t been working you too hard, what with the wound-““What do you want, Pierce.” I didn’t want to have conversations that sounded normal. I could not trust myself not to be pulled to him again. “Just wanted to check if you’re alright.” He removed his bandaged right hand from his pocket and scratched the back of his ear. “I know Sarah wouldn’t be dumb enough to find you again, but I couldn’t stop worrying.” I looked away from him, refusing to fall for his false display of emotion. Pierce always knew just what to say to keep me hooked while we were together. I wasn’t going back to that Myra. “I uhhh…. I also wanted to tell you that your dad is back in the penitentiary. I stood at the hospital reception desk, my eyes fixed on the woman typing away on her computer. "Room or common room?" I asked, forcing my voice to be louder than it could go.She scrolled through the screen, her brow furrowed in concentration. "She's in her room today. She wanted to stay in bed."I nodded, settling back into the dull ache in my chest. I trudged up the stairs, and as I reached my mother's room, pushed open the door and stepped inside. It was dimly lit, I noticed a live plant in her room with wilting leaves. My mother sat in a chair, her legs swathed in a vibrant blanket with small flowery squares that I recognised as the project she had been working on. My lips tugged upwards briefly and my heart swelled. At least one of us was able to finish what we started.I swallowed hard, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill over. When I breathed out, it felt easier.“That looks gorgeous, mum.” I commented, and planted a kiss on the top of her hair. “You finally

Three months later…“This isn’t it” I muttered closing the file in front of me before putting it back in the storage box, along with the other files I had gone through. I glanced around the storage room lit by a single faulty bulb and the lamp I started to bring with me after the third day here. This was the only part of St john’s hospital that didn’t smell like bleach or medication. I inhaled deeply and picked another file. I came here four times a week at minimum, trying to find records of my birth, records of Camilla. Unfortunately, the hospital had not been digitized then and their organization method was absolute shit, therefore making the process harder.I wasn’t even sure her file was here. The records department had refused to partake in my search, but at least they let me be in here, all thanks to Hannah’s intervention. “Not it.” I muttered and put the next file away. As I reached for another one, my cell blared to life breaking the silence.I crawled on all fours to my

My eyes glossed over the words scribbled on the long piece of paper, words that were written in different techniques a testament to her state of mind throughout the process. The ink trailed off in some parts, like the pen had slipped from her hand mid-word. Some of the letters looked like they were melting, thinned and faint, as if she'd been holding the pen too loosely, some were in her normal writing light, tall strokes that showed penmanship assisted by frail hands while other parts were pressed in hard, the ink so dark it bled slightly through the back of the page. I could almost see her hand shaking, or pressing down with too much force, then lifting, uncertain. Like she had stopped and started a hundred times. ‘My sweet girl,’ the letter began, ‘I don’t know how to start this. I’ve written and rewritten these words in my head for years, but now I’m running out of time and I can’t avoid it anymore.’ The ink was deeper at the end of the letter like she had held the pen there,

“Dear brothers and sisters we are gathered here today not only to mourn the passing of our beloved Joanna Thompson, but to celebrate…” I kept my eyes focused on the priest as he stood over my mother’s grave, saying his final words. I could barely believe two weeks has passed since mum died. Time seemed to be flying by in a blur, and I would not have gotten through it without Hannah. She rubbed my shoulder tenderly, her head leaning against mine as she listened to the priest. If not for her, Angie and Carter, I would’ve lost my mind about not finding my sister. A deep ache settled in my chest. Till now, we had not heard a word from her. All the movement we had done to get away from dad had thought her a thing or two about disappearing. Save for a single text, saying she was fine, we had gotten nothing else. “As we bid farewell to our beloved Joanna, let us pray that they may rest in piece. Eternal rest grant unto…” There was about twenty people present. The staff, my friends…th

I blinked once, twice as the sounds around me dimmed to a buzz. I could see Genevieve’s moving but I could not hear a sound out of them. A hand on my shoulder brought me out of my daze and I gasped like I had not been breathing. “I think she’s gonna fall.” Someone muttered before hands enfolded me. “No!” I snapped and stepped away from them, my voice breaking. I licked my lips nervously, my eyes on Genevieve. “Where’s mum?” “I came to do a routine check this morning and she was still asleep when I came in. But when I checked a few minutes ago, she was…she wasn’t breathing.” She said, her face holding sympathy. “What do you mean she wasn’t breathing-but she’s fine now right?” “Myra…” “Right?!” “You should wait for the doctor, to tell you more, Ill get-“ “No! When I got home later that evening nothing could douse the warm feeling that had blossomed in my chest from watching mum and Heidi. The sound of her hearty laughter played in my head and I smiled to myself as I opened the door to my apartment. The last time she had laughed like that was with Pierce. My smile faltered, like it had when I thought of him earlier. Did he know of mum’s recent accident? Of course he did, he was given information on whatever happened to her. But why didn’t he visit her since? I knew he had not because I went through the trouble of asking Genevieve. I know I said I wanted him to stay away from me, but I did not evoke his visits to my mother, not when he made her happy. Maybe I should talk to him… Nope. Absolutely not. If he was staying away, then I would not seek him out. I would use this time away from him to build whatever crack he had made in my walls. I stepped into the house to find Angie hovering outside the door of my room. Then, I heard

After several hours of talking to mum like we were strangers. We decided it was time to leave. The important thing was that she was doing okay, health wise. She had all the time in the world to remember us. My mood immediately darkened remembering what the doctor had said when she pulled me aside. She flashed a sad smile at me, before she spoke… “It pains me yo say this Myra, but it would be a lot worse if I don’t say anything.” “W-what are you talking about?” “There is a phenomenon we experience with terminal patients where they get a burst of energy before they…pass on-“ I snorted disbelievingly, then frowned “are you saying my mum is going to die.” “I’m not saying she will definitely. It’s a thing we have to inform families about, incase this is your last moments with her.” I had told Lily about it and all we could do was watch her from outside, while fighting our own internal battles. Lily left the hospital earlier. I was only convinced to leave by Hannah when she promi

Myra’s POV I slept soundly till the sound of my ringing phone woke me up. It couldn't be morning yet, could it? I wondered as I reached through the sheets for my cell. Three days had passed since the accident and I spent most of it in the house staying in a sour mood. Hannah had stopped by the day after the accident to ask if I really wanted Heidi. For the right reasons. I had gotten upset at the question, but answered sincerely. I had thought about it. And I wasn’t getting her as a replacement for Yvette, which I knew they all thought. Even Lily. All she did was sigh and told me she would help me, because she had contacts. So for three days. I had been hovering around the house, waiting. I took a second to check the time, sitting upright when I read the caller ID. “Hello?” I asked, all traces of sleep leaving my eyes. It was one in the morning and I was getting a call from my mother’s hospital. That did not hold a promise for good things. “Hi. Myra Thompson. So sorry for

Crazy how it wasn’t the first time, but this time, at that hospital it sank in. Maybe because he had seen how close she and Carter had gotten. Or the fact that she didn’t want to see him after her accident while he was on the edge of hysteria with worry. All he had wanted to do was touch her. To convince his frantic heart that she was still there. She was safe and out of harm's way, but she could barely even look him in the face. He had fucked things up, so bad. “Pierce…” his name slipped out of my mouth before Incould stop it. Hannah crushed me in her arms unperturbed.“I was so worried, when Carter called and told me about the accident, I thought…God I’m so hlad you’re okay!” I forced my eyes away from Pierce and focused on Hannah. “I’m fine I promise.”“What is he doing here?” Carter muttered. I was painfully aware of him approaching the bed. With determined steps till Carter blocked his path to me. “What do you think you’re doing?” He challenged Pierce. “I just need to make sure she’s okay.” He answered in a dejected tone. I swallowed, my chest felt like it was caving in at the weight of my emotions. On one end, I wanted to cry into anybody’s shoulder, really. But I also wanted to tell him that the reason my heart was breaking was because I watched a random stranger die. And even though she was a grown woman with her own child. The feeling that pounded in my chest was the same as how I felt when I was holding Yvette’s lifeless body in
