Laura’s POV
“I am late for work, I'm going to get sacked,” I thought.
I jumped out of bed as soon as my alarm beeped. It was so loud that I turned it off immediately.
I checked the time and it was already 7:30 am. I quickly entered the bathroom.
After taking my bath, I dressed in corporate attire; a well-ironed tailored black suit and pants with an off-white chiffon top inside.
I put on wine-colored heels because I didn't want to go out all black, and that complimented my looks.
I applied a little makeup just to complete my looks and at least look presentable.
Satisfied, I grabbed my bag which contained my phone and other things I needed, and dashed out of the house to the bus stop.
Cole had rented a well-furnished apartment for me after listening to my story that afternoon.
He even helped me retrieve my stuff from the hotel where I lodged previously saying I didn't belong in such a place.
I teared up as soon as I heard those words. I never thought anyone would be kind to me or care for me after I was abandoned by everyone including my family.
Thankfully I met Cole who completely changed my life. He didn't just rent an apartment for me, he employed me as his assistant in his company.
He is the CEO of Modern Global, a company he had worked hard to build single-handedly.
I got off the bus as soon as I got to my destination. I walked towards the office facility.
I am scared as fuck!
When Cole asked me yesterday if I would like to work for him as his assistant, I was dumbfounded because I wasn't expecting to get a decent high-paying job like that without stress.
However, I discovered that if I am hardworking and do my work well, then there's no cause for alarm; nothing to be scared of.
I just have to be up and doing to avoid any complaints, that's all. In this regard, I strolled into the office.
I greeted everybody I came across with a smile. Some replied. Some waved at me, while some didn't budge.
I entered the elevator up to the 60th floor which is the last floor. On my way up, I kept checking the time.
It was as if the time was moving faster than the lift. However, I got to the last floor sooner than I expected. The doors opened and I got out.
As soon as I got out of the lift, the first person I saw was the receptionist, Nora.
“Good morning Laura.” She greeted me with a slight smile.
“Good morning Nora.” I greeted her back with a smile too.
“The CEO hasn't come yet. But he left some documents on your desk for you to work on. She said.”
Okay, thank you.” I said as I entered my office. Of course! I have an office.
“Hi, Laura. Do you mind having lunch with me during break time?” Nora asked me with expectations.
“Not at all,” I answered heartily.
“Hey, between tea and coffee, which one does Mr. Cole like?” I asked her.
“Coffee.” She said,
“Okay, umm… do you know how he likes his coffee?” I asked her.
“Yes, black coffee with no milk and sugar. Just plain,” she said.
“Okay, thanks,” I said and walked away.
I went back to my office and got to work. I took the documents and began to go through them to ensure they were correct before I started to sort them.
Quickly, I began to read the contents of the documents. Soon, I discovered something. There was an error.
I began to read them one after the other. After a thorough screening, I discovered the error.
A few hours later, I was done sorting the documents. Ready to take them to the CEO to alert him of the errors I found, but as soon as I stepped out of my office, I bumped into someone.
When I raised my head to see who it was, lo and behold, it was the CEO. I felt goosebumps all over my body as soon as our eyes met.
“Good morning sir.” I greeted him anxiously.
“Good morning Laura.” “Are you good?” He asked me with concern.
“Yes, sir,” I responded swiftly, not showing my fears. “I was coming to your office before I bumped into you. I'm sorry sir, I was not looking,” I said and apologized to him.
“It's okay, just be careful next time,” he said to me and left.
He walked into his office while I hastily dashed into the still room to make his coffee just as he liked it. It's time to reveal my professionalism.
On my way back, I heard the desk phone ring. I hurriedly answered the call.
“Good morning, it's Modern Global, how may I assist you ?” I asked courteously.
I didn't get a response immediately from the other end. However, as I was about to ask again, I heard a masculine voice saying: “Come to my office now! Ms. Laura,” he said and hung up without expecting feedback.
I felt a shiver run down my spine.
I took the documents and his coffee with me. I breathed in and out like three times before finally knocking on his door.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
“Come in,” he said.
I opened the door and went inside. He was sitting in his chair with his eyes fixed on his computer while moving the mouse around on the desk.
What could he be doing? This one he's so focused. I muttered.
“I'm here sir,” I said thinking that would distract him and make him look up. However, it didn't work. Soon, I heard.
“Get me a cup of coffee. No milk! No sugar! And the documents I asked you to work on, have you worked on them?” He asked, his eyes still fixed on his computer.
I put the cup of coffee on his table. That was when he looked up. He looked at me surprised.
He kept staring at me without an utterance, then I began to feel uneasy.
COLE’S POV SEVEN YEARS AGO It was 7 pm and I was bored, so I decided to go see my friend, Antonio, so that we could play some games and probably go out to chill later. Although I had called him several times, his number was not reachable. I was worried because we spoke on the phone earlier and now I couldn't reach him. Somehow, I felt something wasn't right. I made up my mind to go to his house to find out what could be wrong. His house was just five miles away. So, it was walkable from my house. In no time, I was already at his house. I strolled up the stairs. I noticed the sitting room door was not locked. I opened the door and entered. As I walked, I saw clothes scattered everywhere in the passageway; bras, boxers, shirts, etc. I got to his room door and came to a halt as the sound of moans filled the atmosphere. It was a feminine voice. “Omg! Fuck me harder baby. Go deeper baby." "Don't stop fucking me. Continue hitting me on the spot till I cum…" I heard it when I op
LAURA'S POVI was wiping down the windows when I heard the oven beep. I immediately abandoned the rag in favor of hurrying to the kitchen and rescuing the lasagna from the oven. The smell of well cooked lasagna filled the house as I pulled out the tray and dropped it on the kitchen counter to cool. It was one of Antonio's favorite meals and I knew he'd be pleased to get back from work to a hot meal and a sparkling house. There was nothing I enjoyed more than taking care of my husband, but if I was being honest, all my efforts these days were for the sole aim of appeasing my husband. Our once joyous union was now filled with so much cruelty and derision. I hated to admit it, but Antonio had changed overnight and I was now remembering all my family's warnings at the beginning and if maybe I should have needed them. I pushed the dark thought out of my mind. I loved Antonio and I knew that we could work through whatever had broken between us. Love could fix anything. It may have sounde
LAURA'S POVThe very next day, I was lost in thoughts of how to convince my husband to join me for some couple therapy sessions. I had spent the whole day scrolling through the internet, searching for a nearby couple's therapist that was highly recommended. I was distracted by my thoughts while cleaning when the front door opened, revealing a stunning blonde. We stared at each other wordlessly, me in confusion and her in derision. "Who-" Antonio suddenly stepped in after her, his hands encircling her waist. I stared between both of them in horror. What was going on? "Antonio, you're back." I tried to smile at him even though a sick feeling had suddenly begun in the pit of my stomach. I just knew that the woman's presence spelled disaster. She was tall, with big, blue eyes and a well made up face. She had on a fitted white suit with sky high heels. She was beautiful and classy while I was in an old T shirt and shorts, cleaning. I felt embarrassed at her seeing me like this. Why hadn
LAURA'S POVThe Uber finally pulled over in front of my parents' house. I stepped out of the vehicle and the driver helped me get my luggage out of the trunk and up to my parents' doorstep. I tipped him for his services and he drove off. I took a deep breath before ringing the doorbell, my heart pounding in my chest. My family had never been in support of my marriage to Antonio and now they were going to tell me they told me so at this outcome. I was embarrassed, but I had nowhere else to go. I didn't have any friends in the city and all the friends I had made during my marriage would surely take my husband... no... ex-husband's side. "Go get the door, Mira." I heard my father call out. A moment later, the door swung open, revealing a very familiar face. I smiled nervously. "Hey, ma."The green eyes I had inherited from her narrowed at me, displeasure etched on her face. "What are you doing here?" I swallowed. "I don't have anywhere else to go. I just need a place to stay for a fe
ANTONIO’S POV"I really think you should reconsider this whole divorce thing." Zayn, my best friend said to me. I scoffed. "Laura is worthless to me. She can't give me a child and neither is my marriage with her gaining me any business deals. Helen's father is well connected and what's more, she's stunning." "Laura is stunning too." He argued. "Even more stunning if I'm being honest. Helen just looks like hundreds of other rich, spoiled girls." I shot him a warning look and he raised his hand in surrender. I didn't like hearing him say that Laura was stunning. It felt like he had been looking at my wife and I didn't like it. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that about Helen." It suddenly struck me that I had been more pissed about him saying my wife was beautiful than saying the woman I was about to marry was a rich, spoiled girl. What did that mean for my pending marriage? I pushed the thought away, focusing on packing up my things to go home. "Look, it doesn't matt
LAURA’S POVI took the first flight I found out of Chicago. The flight was bound for Las Vegas and luckily, there was one unbooked seat for it. I immediately paid for it with the last of my money. I suddenly regretted not making my own money during my marriage. I wouldn't have been stranded now if I had been smart enough to get a job or something. I had had stars in my eyes and had thought Antonio and I would last forever. He was a wealthy man, the kind of wealth that he could retire today and still have enough money to ensure up to his fourth generation never had to lift their fingers to work. When I'd recently met him, I had been terrified by his obvious wealth. I'd had to get used to just being able to get whatever I wanted. I didn't have wishlists anymore, because as soon as something caught my eye, Antonio had gotten it for me. It was a mistake I'd never make again in my life, allowing myself to become so consumed in a man that I didn't have my own money. That is, if I would ev
