I have been in front of the computer searching through every possible jobs I could attend an interview for tomorrow.
Today was a disaster, and there is no need to put my mind to getting actual work there.“Hello, best friend.” The door opened revealing a smiling, carefree Jessy who looked like she had drunk a blank. She giggled loudly at the door while throwing her shoes away simultaneously.I froze my hand on the computer, watching her through the half struggle of closing the door and laughing and trying to get rid of her work clothes.“Are you drunk??” Although she is laughing right now, I don't even need to ask that question. She giggled again, and I sighed before standing up and walking to the door.Pushing her aside, I close the door before half dragging her away from it.“I was so tired and fed up with everything, and guess what? I decided to drink” she giggled and once we were close to the couch she pushed me aside falling to the couch. One look at her and I know she is super wasted.“Oh God” I leaned down to take out the other pair of shoes, and she smelled great. “Just how much did you drink??"She snuggled more into the couch, taking the sofa pillow and snuggling into it.Well, I don't need to ask because there it is, just how much she had drunk. After taking her shoes off and the rest of her clothes, I left her lying down there as her snore filled the living room.I walked to the bedroom, got a duvet, and covered her with it before closing down the system and getting ready for bed. Before Zoe can join us here, I need to have a steady life for us, and now she is coming sooner than expected.I sighed, already tired of every single thing happening in my life, before taking one last look at Jessy and turning the light off.I guess tomorrow is another day, another to disgrace myself more in an interview.* * *I heard a loud sound and groaned, using the pillow to cover my ears. A loud thud is heard before the sound is turned off.“Jessy, someone lives here too” I shouted into the pillow and could hear the crackle of her voice.“I'm sorry sweetheart, but I need the coffee” she shouted from the living roomI groaned into the pillow knowing that any idea of sleep had just been taken away from me.After closing my eyes for a minute or two, I stood up from the bed and went to the bathroom.Taking care of my morning needs was pretty quick before I walked to the living room and there she was on the study computer with her caffeine.“Yours is there” She pointed to the little kitchen space table and winked at me then proceeded to blow me a kiss.Gosh, it's like she didn't come back so drunk. She is just too okay for someone who barely knows what she was doing the night before.I took a sip of the caffeine as I felt the relaxation hit me hard.“You didn't tell me about the interview” She turned her chair towards me, giving me her full concentration.“Oh don't remind me” I groaned, placing my head on the table.“It cannot be that bad??” She asked and I groaned again.“Trust me it was, Adriel Jaime was there,” I told her.“What??” She mouthed, her mouth agape, “Like seriously? What was he doing there??”“I don't have any idea Jessy, it was like he was sent to ask me questions and make sure I didn't answer shit. You know what? I'm going to keep finding cause this is a no-go area” I declared, defiantly, going to the table to settle down.“Are you serious?? Did he remember you??” She asks.“Did he remember me? Good question” I scoff, “I think he did because everything pointed out that fact”“Oh that's bad, it means there isn't a way,” she said with sadness.“Sure, but you can always dismiss yourself and make me your replacement??” I suggested.“Umm baby girl hold yo ass tight” She rolled her eyes at me and turned her chair back to the computer she was on.“Thanks for being a good friend” I pined at her and then turned towards my phone as I heard a peeping sound “That's my cue, I have an interview in 30 minutes” I left her there with her work I ran to the bathroom getting ready for another insufferable interview.* * *It's been a week since that disastrous interview with AJ Spins and Scents and finally, I have a job to my name.Although it isn't exactly what I was looking for, the pay and tips can keep me going every so often.I just got back home tired from all the standing and I know exactly what I needed, lots of sleep.“Hey Rissa welcome back” Jessy, who was lying down on the sofa and her eyes pinned on the television, greeted me and I waved at her before walking to the bedroom.God, I'm so tired, waiting tables for more weeks, and I'm going to die before my time“So I have news for you” I didn't even notice when she entered and turned around a little to look at her.Her face was ever cheerful as it always pined on me, and she seemed somewhat merry.“You know how my night shift goes Jess, I don't have time for guesswork” I walked to the bed and started removing my shoes first. After standing for such a long time, I feel like my toes are going numb completely.“Okay that's great then, now I have a surprise for you and I even printed it out” She twirled herself around until she came to me and then showed a piece of paper to me.I sighed in frustration before lying flat on the bed.“Just give it to me without drama please” she chuckled, seeing my impatience.“I love that” She stared at me and then dropped the paper to the bed and I picked it up, steadying myself as I looked at it.“Congratulations you have… What? What's this??” I stared at the paper in shock as I heard her scream at Jessy before she engulfed me in a hug, “How???”“Oh baby, no one cares, I am so happy for you. Welcome to the AJ club,” she kissed my cheeks excitedly.I stared at the paper email she had printed out, I was offered the job as Adriel Jaime's assistant, and this still feels unreal.“Can I see the real email??” I ask her and she frowns.“It's on your phone, I guess now you are working with him, you will know how to open an email”I'm still buzzing with excitement, I opened the email on my phone to see the real thing.God, how very excited and happy I feel right now.“This… This feels… I am so excited”“Of course, you are” I hugged her with excitement that screamed out at me.“Oh and check the other two emails, you might want to read those” she pointed out“I need to strategize Jessy, this is it, I can get closer to saving Zoe”She ignored me and rolled her eyes“You first have to enjoy working there before anything else, for now just enjoy this opportunity before you start with your strategy”The only thing that made me ever think of working in an AJ organization is Zoe, and I won't forget that. The only reason I am this excited is because, finally, I will get closer to them, starting with my first suspect, Jaime.“And babe, this is where the real work begins” She winked at me, drawing away“I don't care about the work Jessy, I just want to find the truth and nothing but,” I told her, shushing her away from me.It feels like everything I wanted has just fallen into place just because of a letter of acceptance.“But I thought, I mean after the interview.....”“You don't have to think anything Rissa, enjoy the buzz” She fled the room and banged the door on her way.I stared at the email for the longest and then scrolled to the next oneThe proposed payment has my eyes gouged out.“What the hell?” It was much for an assistant, and I couldn't just stop staring.I went to the next paragraph and saw that some money would be sent to my account once I added it up for the first payment before work started.“Oh this is great, I can send some money over home” I beamed and then quickly added my account to where it was needed.Yes, today hasn't gone too well, but I will be starting work in Adriel Jaime's company and that is all I need to make my day a better one. When I arrived at AJ Spins and Scent this morning, there was this feeling of Happiness. Optimism? I cannot place my finger on it, but it was there as soon as I arrived.I was directed to the last floor which belonged to the CEO and holy hell it was a huge floor. Three secretaries worked at the front desk before getting to my desk, which is opposite the CEO's office.I just had to stand to admire how spacious and CEO-ish the whole place looked. One of the secretaries, Miranda, showed me my desk, which was a small opening office space right there in the corner of the office. It has a desk and a chair with a pop-up wardrobe that has plenty of books and files inside it.“I think this is all you need right now, you can just sit around and await the next instruction,” she said to me before disappearing off to her front desk.Everyone was hostile, the two other ladies didn't even utter a hi, even after I made sure to send a greeting their way. At least only Miranda was able to say something
JAIME She is the most undeserving of the chance to work with me, yet I went back home and the thought couldn't leave my head. So why not, why not let her work here, then I can know her motive for watching me like a hawk. There must be a reason to find her on the list of applicants when she had just been watching us the whole time during that night. But apart from that reason, there was also something about her, something I could not place my hand on. A sharp knock on the door and it is pulled open with my voice commanding the person to enter inside. She is sweating profusely as she enters the office, and then she stops before letting her eyes rim over the space. She seems to appreciate what she is seeing before realizing herself and then walks to the desk. “I am so sorry I'm like 4 minutes late, I just made some mistakes and there was a little problem, and then….” “You can drop it on my desk, Miss??” “Clarissa Miller” she supplied, of course, I knew her name. “Miss Miller”
JAIME “The new girl huh” Jaycee gave me a raised brow “She seems to be perky” “And clumsy too” I added to him.“Uh-huh, I can add something else I noticed from her,” He said as we walked down the elevator.“I'm sure you can keep the whole list to yourself Jay you just need to show me this, and we have a business to talk about too” I reminded him as we walked to the outer part of the building. The place that holds most of the perfumers for the testing of the new product. He led me straight to the place and I saw they were already gathered around waiting for my entrance.“Good morning Mr. Jaime” the head greeted, walking up to me “We have everything prepared already and waiting for you,” He said, leading me and Jaycee to the places where the new products are kept.I looked at the branding first, making sure the bottling was accurately how I wanted it to be, and thereafter, I took the new sample bottle he had handed over to me.I sneeze around it before spraying it in a handkerchief an
CLARISSAChecking the wall clock again, I might have become more restless than I was before because what am I still doing here when it's already time for the end of work for the day?I mean those three ladies' voices raised high when they left 12 minutes ago shows exactly that, but here I am still waiting for a minute that will never happen. After another two minutes had passed, I knew my impatience had taken a better part of me and I would not sit around.Standing up, I walk straight to his office and breathe in before knocking.“Come in,” he said authoritatively.Gosh, his voice is always commanding, never the type to be soft-spoken.I push the door inside and walk to the office. Closing the door, I stood at the doorstep. He raised his eyes from the file he was looking at and regarded me sternly.I must have taken a minute to look at him again, his suit jacket discarded, his sleeves rolled up and a bead of sweat rolling on his forehead.I gulped down and then looked down at the flo
There was an unusual silence when I walked into the office the next day, especially knocking on Mr. Jaime's door and finding out he wasn't at the desk yet.I walked into my office space, organized the work things that I had brought and pulled my laptop open as I looked through the schedules and answered some emails that needed my attention and still he wasn't here.He has a lot of work to be done today and he is meant to have a meeting this morning. Does that mean he went to the meeting first before coming to the office??At the sound of the elevator I stood and looked at the door as I held my breath and waited for him to show up, but when the foot came scraping I knew he wasn't the one."Good morning Miss Miller." His brother James smiled at me as he walked to my side of the office. There was so much going on in his demount, his eyes were lazy like he had spent the whole day trying to refresh himself and yet he slept through it all."Good morning Mr. Adriel, I'm sure you are here to
There was no way what I was staring at could be real. My mind spun as I scrolled through the comments. The internet was eating this story alive.“When did this happen?” I asked, my voice trembling as I handed the phone back to Jessy. My hands were shaking, and my thoughts were racing in a million directions.“It happened this morning. It’s all anyone’s talking about at the office. I’m shocked you didn’t know,” she said, her tone laced with disbelief. But could you blame me? I didn’t keep up with half the things happening around me.I grabbed the bag beside me and walked to my room, my body buzzing with unease. This couldn’t be real. It didn’t make any sense.I fished my phone out of my bag and dialed his number. I held my breath, waiting. Voicemail. Of course. His phone was probably blowing up nonstop. With the amount of gossip that people are ready to consume, he will not have a moment of rest until his phone is dead so I got that part. Frustration boiled in me. There was no way I c
JAIME ADRIELThe previous morning, as I got ready for work, my phone rang from the bedside table. Already running late, I ignored it.The call came again, followed by a flood of notifications that lit up my screen. Standing in front of the mirror, tie in hand, I hesitated. The sheer number of alerts was impossible to ignore. With a sigh, I grabbed my phone. As I held it, another call came through—Jaycee. I answered, putting it on speaker.“Man, what’s up? Are you the one blowing up my phone with messages? What’s going on?” I asked, annoyed.“You haven’t seen the blog yet?” His voice was hoarse, his tone tight. “If not, turn off your phone now. I’ll be at your place in five.”The tension in his voice unsettled me. Frowning, I clicked on the first link an acquaintance had sent to me. My hand froze midair as I read the headline.“Business Tycoon Adriel Jaimel Accused of Sexual Assault.”The words were sharp, cutting through my mind like a blade. My breath hitched.“What the hell is this?
The chaos in the house was exactly what I'd expected, but the calmness in Jaime's eyes was not. For someone accused of something so delicate and career-threatening, he seemed too composed. His hands were buried deep in his pockets as he descended the stairs, his gaze locked on mine, unwavering until he reached the bottom. "Clarissa Miller," he said softly, his voice carrying a weight that sent an unwelcome warmth through me. I hated that I'd missed hearing him say my name over the past two days. I wouldn't admit it aloud, though. Instead, I swept my eyes across the room, feigning disbelief at the disarray. "Is this how you handle chaos?” I tripped on my tongue and blurted, biting inside my tongue for saying that. He didn't respond. Instead, he turned and walked away, his silence beckoning me to follow. A relief washed over me because why did I say that?We moved through a narrow corridor, the noise fading behind us, until we stepped outside. The crisp air hit my face, and for the f
Silence filled the car. Jaime had ditched his driver and was behind the wheel himself, his hands steady on the wheel as he drove us through the city. I sat in the front seat beside him, unsure of how I should act or what this impromptu outing was really about.I never imagined that simply sitting in the front seat with a man could feel so… intimate. Not that I was saying this was romantic, but still.Soft blues played through the speakers, filling the space between us. Jaime tapped his fingers against the steering wheel in rhythm with the music, his expression unreadable.I kept my hands folded in my lap, staring out the window, lost in thought, when his voice suddenly cut through the quiet.“What kind of music do you like?”I blinked and turned to look at him, caught off guard. Out of all the things he could have asked, I wasn’t expecting that.“Why do you look so surprised?” he asked, glancing at me briefly before returning his focus to the road.“I just didn’t expect you to ask me
Mr. Jaime returned to the office hours later, looking as furious as ever.He didn’t spare me a glance as he walked straight to his office, slamming the door behind him.Okay, that was weird.Even when he was angry, he never slammed doors. Now I was completely confused. Should I go in and check on him? Should I show him the messages he received while he was away? What exactly should I do that wouldn’t make him bite my head off?Deciding it was best to inform him about his messages, I stood up and made my way to his office.Just as I was about to push the door open, I realized it was slightly ajar, and I heard him shouting. Curious, I pressed my ear against the door.“Can you imagine that? Talking to me about family values as if he doesn’t know what our family is, why we’re the most successful in this part of the world.”He was on the phone, no doubt about that. And whoever he was speaking to, he was venting to them about whatever had him so pissed off.“Exactly. I’m not trying to monop
CLARISSAI tried to find my voice, but it was nowhere to be found. Why did my eyes suddenly burn with unshed tears? I was being so stupid right now.“So, where were we?” Jaime asked casually, as if nothing had happened. As if my heart hadn’t been pounding recklessly inside my chest just moments ago.I clenched my fists, cursing myself for letting my emotions get the best of me. He grabbed the bag of flour from the counter and started giving me instructions. I followed along, mixing the ingredients, but my heart wasn’t in it anymore.I felt ridiculous.“Can I use the restroom?” I asked, my voice surprisingly steady.Without looking up, he nodded.I walked away quickly, pushing open the door to the restroom and turning on the faucet. I scrubbed my hands furiously, wishing I could wash away the embarrassment clinging to me.God, I was such an idiot.“Are you in here?”Paula’s voice startled me, and I hastened to dry my hands, forcing myself to appear composed before stepping out.“Sorry,
CLARISSAOkay, not only is this getting ridiculous, but it’s also kind of funny.Cook together?Does that even make sense? And why the hell is Jaime suddenly smiling like this is the best idea he’s ever heard? He should be just as annoyed as I am. But no, he looks perfectly happy to go along with it.Since he’s clearly on board, I don’t have a choice but to follow through. What have I gotten myself into?More importantly, why does he suddenly look so damn good in casual wear?Does this man ever have a bad day? Ever not look like he just walked out of a magazine?I saw the exact moment he caught me staring. No, not starring, gawking.God. Could I be any more pathetic? But honestly, how could I not look? He’s just standing there, looking unfairly good, and my traitorous eyes won’t stop drinking him in.“Yes, I’ve found that cooking is a great way to open up and express yourselves,” Paula said, looking between the two of us. “It allows you to interact more, to connect.” She smiled. “It’s
JAIME “What are you doing? I thought this was about the rumor, but after what I just saw, I don’t…” “And what exactly did you see?” I cut James off, walking back to my chair and sinking into it. Well, trying to sink into it. I couldn’t even sit comfortably, my damn zipper was pressing too hard against the bulge in my trousers. Fuck. I had a hard-on for my assistant. This was not what I had expected today. Not in a million years did I think I would find myself hiding a hard-on from my own brother. Worse? It wasn’t because of some random fantasy, it was because I couldn’t stop staring at my assistant. James’ jaw tightened. “Do you even know her? Anything about her?” His voice was laced with frustration, but I knew my brother well enough to recognize the underlying concern. He always masked it with irritation, but it was there. “If you didn’t come here to judge me, get on with what you came for,” I said, dismissively. Because, frankly, I had better things to focus on,
I had been on edge all day. Every time Jaime called me to his office, I either jumped or felt my chest tighten with anxiety. I didn’t know how to put what I was feeling into words, but the craziest part? I already knew exactly why I was so nervous. James Adriel. He must have told Jaime. The thought alone had my stomach in knots. This family had no business making me feel this way, but here I was, too anxious to even move from my chair. Lunchtime came and went, yet I remained frozen, unable to eat, unable to think straight. Then the landline rang. I flinched. Seeing Jaime’s name on the screen only made my nerves worse. Taking a deep breath, I answered. “Mr. Adriel.” My voice wavered slightly. “Come to my office,” he said, then hung up immediately. Oh shit. That was it. He knew. The way he spoke, so short, so clipped, it was obvious. James must have told him everything. I stared at the phone, then at myself. What was the worst that could happen? That he would end this rid
I woke up still basking in the excitement of last night. Not only had dinner gone better than I expected, but Zoe was finally here. She lay beside me, cuddled up in my arms, her small breaths soft and rhythmic. As I ran my fingers gently through her hair, I whispered quiet words of love and encouragement, holding her a little closer.God, I had missed her so much.Everything we used to do together, every little moment we had been apart for too long. Since the day she was born, she had become my world, my everything. The door creaked open, and Jessy strolled in casually.“You two are still sleeping?” she asked in a hushed tone, her gaze softening as she looked at Zoe.I nodded but kept my eyes on the sleeping beauty beside me. Traveling alone must have been exhausting for her. By the time I got home last night, she had already been fast asleep and hadn’t stirred once.“It’s a good thing today is Saturday,” I murmured, my fingers still tracing slow, comforting patterns through her hair.
CLARISSAThe unsettling feeling didn’t disappear as I took my seat at the table. The room was loud with conversation, filled with laughter and the kind of warmth that made it feel like a home. Yet, I couldn’t shake the tension tightening in my chest. My eyes scanned the table. Everyone seemed to have someone, Jeremy sat beside a beautiful blonde woman who looked like an actress, her delicate voice barely above a whisper as she spoke. They looked perfect together, the kind of couple that belonged in a magazine. Then there was James. He had come alone, but he didn’t need anyone by his side to command attention. His presence alone was enough. His sharp features were locked in an expression of quiet intensity, his shoulders rigid, his gaze calculated as he took in everyone at the table.I found myself staring a second too long. And then, his eyes met mine.Holy shit.I looked away so fast it was almost embarrassing, focusing instead on Marianna, who, despite her age, looked effortlessly e
CLARISSAI looked as beautiful as I possibly could, but the nerves twisting in my stomach refused to settle. This would be my first time meeting Jaime’s entire family at once, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that it mattered more than I wanted to admit. Why did he even want me there? Hope had said it was just a formality, but something about it didn’t sit right with me.Hope had been the one to help me pick out my dress, ensuring I looked both simple and elegant. As she put the final touches on my makeup, she stepped back to admire her work.“You look stunning,” she said, a proud smile on her face. Then, lowering her voice slightly, she added, “But have you met his mother? My aunt is the one you should look out for.”I frowned, tilting my head. “She was nice to me the first couple of times I saw her.”Hope gave a small shrug. “Things change. Just be prepared.”The comment did nothing to ease my nerves, but I nodded anyway. Not like his mother didn’t already know this whole thing was
