"Ace," I say, acknowledging his presence.
Which is unwanted I might add.
"I, um, I want to apologize. You know, for what happened earlier," He says, staring right into my eyes.
I was surprised, not all people can look straight into someone's eyes.
Though it was dark, the post lights illuminated his face. It caused me to notice his dark brown hair, he had green-blue eyes that would even look grey if you would not look intently, his face shape was somehow in between oval and square because of his jawline, and kissable lips.
Damn, he looks perfect. And he is only wearing a white shirt, black Nike shorts and flip-flops.
Usually, I would get uncomfortable having eye contact with someone for more than three seconds. But he just kept staring, and I didn't mind.
I now realized why.
"Are we okay?" He asks.
He was waiting for an answer.
And I don't know what answer I would give him.
"Yeah, we're okay. No blood, no foul," I shrug.
Then I looked down at his hand.
His knuckles were purplish-red, and his hands were swollen.
"Your hands.." I start to say and I realize how stupid I am.
'No blood, no foul'? Who the fuck was I trying to be? Freaking Augustus Waters?
His hand was literally bleeding and here I am saying shit like this.
"Oh god, I'm sorry, I didn't-" I say but he cuts me off.
"No, it's fine,"
"But your hand.." I say looking down at it once again.
"It will heal,"
"Not without the proper treatment, you are coming with me," I say to him, grabbed his arm, making sure not to hit his wounds.
We started walking back to my house and told him to stay out front.
Mom didn't hear me come in and I get the first aid kit above the cabinet.
I heard her inside the bathroom and I quickly grabbed ice from the fridge.
I go outside and he's sitting on the grass.
I sat beside him and he looks at me and gives me a small smile.
"You know, I saw a dog pee exactly where you're sitting on," I say and his friendly face turns serious.
"You're joking," He says.
I wish I was.
"Yeah I am," I lie while chuckling. It's the least he can do for screaming at me.
"Give me your hand," I tell him and he puts it on top of my lap once I sat down beside him.
I'm pretty certain the pee hasn't reached this far.
I opened the kit and used some cotton for his blood, I gently dabbed his knuckles and he winces.
"Sorry," I say.
"What are you sorry for?" He asks.
"You winced, I hurt you,"
"No, you did not." He grins.
"What are you smiling at?"
"Nothing,"
I just let the matter go, and continued treating his hand.
"Did your mom tell you?" He asks me.
"Tell me what?"
"Dinner at our house on Friday,"
"Oh yeah, she did. But I'm afraid we won't be able to come." I tell him.
"Why?"
"We're staying over at my aunt's house for the weekend, we're leaving on Friday." I simply tell him. He doesn't need to know the details of what is happening to my body right now.
"Oh okay, I'll just tell mom." He says.
I finished treating his hand, I quickly stand up as soon as he does.
"Thanks,"
"I better go, your mom and dad might be waiting for you," He says.
Dad.
I couldn't help but scoff.
"What?" He asks.
"It's just only me and my mom now," I answer.
"Oh, I'm so sorry," He says.
"It's fine,"
"Well, if it makes you feel better, you're not the only one," He tells me and walks back to his house.
The rest of the week passed by and the next thing I know, we were at Aunt Becca's house.
I was hanging out in the living room after I and mom arrived, and they were both talking in the kitchen.
Why does every gossip start in the kitchen?
"Uhm, Mom?" I call out from the living room.
"Yes, honey?"
"I don't wanna be rude, but I'm kind of tired and I just really wanna rest-"
"Oh sure, your bedroom is upstairs, last room on the right." Aunt Becca says.
I followed the directions and finally, a room where I can rest and have my own privacy.
I put my bags on the floor and laid in bed, after a few minutes, I dozed off to sleep.
I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing.
It was Ollie.
"Mel?"
"Yeah, it's me. Why'd you call?"
"I got news!" He says enthusiastically.
"What is it?"
"There will be a bonfire near the town lake next week Friday. You should come."
"Hell yeah, I'll come," I tell him.
"Alright, that's all, I'll talk to you later okay?"
"Okay," I answer, then he hangs up.
I was already awake, so I decided to just scroll through my phone, deleting some unnecessary photos.
A while later, Mom calls me from downstairs.
"Mel, dinner's ready!"
"Coming!" I answer.
While eating dinner, I was pretty much trying to start a conversation. Dinner won't be depressing at the very least.
"So, Aunt Becca, how's Billy at the university?" I ask.
"Oh, that boy will be the death of me." She says and Mom and I chuckled.
"He keeps on telling me that they need this certain amount of money, for the props and costumes!" She exclaims.
"Dramatic Arts do need such funds, especially if it's a big performance." Mom comments.
Billy is my cousin. He's practically one of my best friends, he's just two years ahead of me and we get along really well.
"Yeah, well, he better be studying hard and not just going to some frat parties and such, or else I will smack him despite his 20 year age." She adds and Mom and I laugh once again.
Everything was light and it was like I was away from the stress and problems all at once. I needed that break. Before I went to sleep that night, Aunt Becca checks my blood pressure and temperature. She said that everything was back to normal, and my immune system might have been weak these past few weeks, that's probably why I fainted back in detention.
Aunt Becca used to be a nurse. She resigned when Billy was born since she wants to put all her attention to him, Uncle Will works in the bigger city, office work, Aunt Becca said that he usually comes home once a month and stays for a week or two.
The next morning, I woke up and got ready for the day. I went downstairs and I smell the cooking of toast and eggs.
We all had a chatty breakfast just like our dinner last night.
Aunt Becca mentioned the day of their housewarming party. Mom, Dad and I went to help them prepare and Aunt Becca and Uncle Will invited their friends along with the rest of the family.
Us kids, Billy, me and some boy were hanging out at Billy's room. We were playing with toys and video games. Basically, back then, I was that type of girl who hangs out with guys to avoid drama. Not that I really had a choice.
Anyway, Aunt Becca ordered Billy to buy a few things at the grocery down their new house's street so Billy went away for a few minutes.
"Funny thing that I remember, I kind of kissed that boy when Billy left," I tell them and they laughed.
"You kissed Anne's son?" Aunt Becca asked me, still chuckling.
"Well, if that is his mama's name, then yes," I say, and they continued chuckling.
"I would have told your father, but.." Mom jokingly says.
And I swear the kitchen went awfully quiet I wanted to burn something just for the fire alarm to break the deafening silence.
The weekend passed and before I knew it, it's the weekdays.Nothing was new, classes were the same.During lunch, all that Chloe and Ollie talked about was the bonfire."More girls lose their virginities during bonfires than prom," Ollie says with a sly grin."Speaking of, since when are you planning to lose yours?" Chloe asks him."I can ask you the same question, honey.""Can't say we have the same answer.""Still swooning over the same guy, I see," Ollie says teasingly."I'm actually planning on asking him to the bonfire." Chloe smiles, blushing."Oh really? Who's the guy?" I ask her."Ace Martins," She answers, smiling.Of course she likes Ace. The dude's practically perfect.Oh god, I remembered his abs."This bitch's been crushing on him since middl
Ace's POV"Fine," I tried my best not to roll my eyes and sighed instead, and the way her face lit up was simply priceless to look at.I couldn't find it in me to say no to her."Thank you, she'll be very happy," She smiles."I'll see you at the bonfire." I say and she silently says 'okay' while still smiling.I silently go down their stairs and quickly went out the door.I walk back to my house and I see my friends messing around the front yard."Ace, why are you smiling?" Paul asks me.I am?We got to the bonfire and I followed my friends who were approaching the little spot under the trees. They started putting up our tents, but I just stood there, looking for Melannie."A little help here, Ace?
Ace's POVEveryone cheered and sat down on the logs.Chloe sat on my left, while Mel sat with Tristan on my right."Do you have any idea on what the games are?" Mel asks me."Boring," I say and she scowled."Everyone likes a good suck and blow, right?" James says and people cheer once again.
Mel's POVWe kept on playing the game for about ten more minutes (more or less). It was fun, Chloe dared me to strip one of my clothes off every time I ask, and when someone asks me a question.I had already taken off the beanie and scarf Tristan gave me, along with my boots and socks. We were interrupted by cheers outside. They were all laughing and hooting, we all peeked out the tent to check what's happening.
I woke up at nearly 10. My head hurts so much but I have to fix my things.“How’s Chloe?” I whisper to Ollie. She hasn’t woken up yet.“She cried a lot last night then dozed off to sleep. She’ll get over him,” He rolls his eyes.I hope so.When I came back to our tent last night after talking to Ace, they were both asleep. Poor Chloe.I also felt guilty. I made her think that Ace actually likes her, if I hadn’t forced Ace, none of this would have happened. I knew that he had a choice, but I made him feel like he didn’t. Oh god, what have I done?
“Bro, you’re coming to my party, right?” Tristan asks me.We just finished our exams and we’re both walking to the cafeteria with Paul.“Oh yeah, you going for it, man?” Paul asks Tristan with a grin, playfully hitting his arm, I furrow my brows in confusion.“Going for what?” I ask.“Paul and I made this bet,” Tristan starts.No.“Not another bet, Tristan,” I frown.“We’ve talked about this, that’s bull!” I add.“Oh come on, Ace.” He tries to reason with me.
“Mel, you made it!” Tristan smiles and gives me a tight hug.“Um, hello? We’re here too,” Ollie waves his hands in front of him. Tristan chuckles and was about to give him a hug but Danny pulls Ollie to him by the waist.Chloe rolls her eyes.“Where are the drinks?” Chloe asks Tristan and he chuckles.“Follow me,” He says and gestures for us to follow him.We make our way through the crowd. Some were dancing, some were sitting on the couch, some were playing games, I quickly stopped observing the surroundings when I felt a hard grip on my wrist, causing me to stop walking.“There you are, I’ve been looking for you,&rdquo
“Where’s your key?” Ace asks me while helping me out of the car and walked me to our porch, he holds out his left hand while his right one is gripping my arm.“I don’t know…they’re in Chloe’s car? I think,”I seriously cannot remember, why can’t I remember?“They’re in what?”“I said they’re in Chloe’s car!” I yell.“Gosh, you are much more complicated when you’re high,” He sighs and pulls me back inside his car.“Where are we going?” I ask but he didn’t answer. We were still on the road and I feel my stomach turning once again.Ace turns the AC off and the window beside me rolls down, the cold air hits my face and I let out a groan.Ok, yeah I’m high.It just felt so good.So good that I even opened up my mouth, put my tongue out and let it taste the cold air.I feel my whole body tense up and restless, the lights on the road seem much brighter, making my head spin, I giggled for no apparent reason and now I feel like puking.Ace takes a turn and the street lights are gone, replacing
Here's the thing when you do something illegal, you either get caught or you don't. Tristan was the latter, Ace and I got away with it. Do I feel bad? Yes. Did he deserve it? Most definitely. Did I regret the entire plot? Yes. Because now, I can't stop thinking about Ace Martins. It's ridiculous, and I'm certain that I'm just going to fuck up his life. Despite my best efforts to drive him away–both mentally and physically–I've failed in doing so. In a span of months, I haven't gone out much. Mainly because the only person I've just wanted to see is living right across the street. I talk to Chloe and Ollie every now and then, nothing is wrong with them, but I found myself wanting to talk to Ace more. I hate it, but then the things we do say otherwise. Everything went by fast and if I'm being completely honest, I don't think I remember all of it. The last we heard from Tristan is that cops came to their house, and I think he's either in jail or rehab or god knows where, I decided
I don't exactly remember how long the drive was, I definitely wasn't too preoccupied with my thoughts, nor looking at the boy driving the car I'm in. I couldn't help but ask, "Was Tristan always like this?"He heard what I said. Before I spoke up, the ride was quiet. I'm guessing the car had something to do with memory flashbacks of a bonfire and a lake and a kiss that none of the two of us seem to remember.Ace was quiet for a few seconds, he looked like he was trying to remember his years with a supposed asshole."He was...a really confusing kid. I mean, we both were. He could be helping out some lost freshman and lead them to their actual classes, or sometimes he would choose to play with their heads and make them end up in the maintenance area. Sometimes, what he does are worse than just losing a freshman on campus. You'd never really expect what he chooses to do next.""Were you like that?" I ask.Frankly, I didn't want to expect a particular answer from him. Although it will gi
The car is back, everything is okay with Chloe, and I am with Ace again.I'm not hanging out with him because Chloe said that it's fine and she doesn't care. She's lying, she's not fine, and she does care, which means that it's still not fine with me. It's Ace that won't leave me alone."Are you sure we should do this?" I ask him."Admit it or not, you want to do this.""Not if we're going to get caught.""We're not, okay?" He says and brings out another pack of weed."This feels like a crime." I say and he chuckles."Because it is."
After breakfast at Ace’s, I quickly headed home and facetimed Ollie. Good thing mom didn’t hear me, she was still asleep, she must’ve been tired from work.“I don’t know what to do, Ollie.” I groan, plopping myself down on my bed.“The guy definitely has anger issues,” He mumbles through the phone, getting sidetracked for the fourth time since I called.“You’re not listening to me!” I yell.“Of course, I am! You told me that Tristan made you take this drug and was about to take advantage of you-which you should report-Ace found out and came to the rescue-that was so hot, by the way-and then he took you to the lake, where he punched the hell out of a tree and then the both of you made out, completely intoxicated.” He says in jus
Mel’s POVWhy does the grass feel so good? The stars look brighter, even the moon looks so shiny.I feel a comb brushing through my hair and I giggled.“Ooh yeah, I like it, keep doing that,” I say and my pillow started to shake causing me to quickly sit up and vomit. No joke. Literal vomit. The comb rubs my back and I reached back to put it back on my head only to hold up someone’s hand.I jumped in surprise and opened my mouth to scream but I puked instead.Feeling drained, I laid back on my pillow inhaling a familiar scent. I roll on my stomach and pressed my face against the pillow and took a deeeep breath.“It’s smells so good,” I sigh.
“Where’s your key?” Ace asks me while helping me out of the car and walked me to our porch, he holds out his left hand while his right one is gripping my arm.“I don’t know…they’re in Chloe’s car?
