Cheryl York had always thought she was special to Wesley Lincoln. Even if she had to stay by his side without anyone else knowing about it, she could be obedient and accommodating. She would willingly come to him as and when he wanted and loved him unconditionally. But everything changes when she learns that he's getting engaged. Cheryl doesn't believe it and even stupidly runs to him to ask him whether it's true. All she gets is a nonchalant question. "Don't I treat you well enough already?" It's only then that Cheryl realizes her love is nothing but a joke. Wesley only thinks of her as a plaything. Later, Cheryl gets married. On the day of her wedding, her groom clears a whole road in the city and has countless expensive cars lining it. The wedding is so grandiose that it's a scene no one has ever witnessed before. Everyone is jealous of how lucky she is. Wesley shows up at the wedding, too. He's neither the groom nor a guest—he's there to take the bride away. Cheryl has her arm in her groom's as they approach Wesley. She uses the exact same tone he used with her and asks, "Were my wedding photos not big enough to catch your attention, or has your eyesight gone bad with age, Uncle Wes?"
View MoreCheryl thought that she would be the only one accompanying Shane on the trip. She hadn't expected Ian to be going too."What's with the blank expression? Cheryl, did you hear what I said?" Wanda asked unhappily. She didn't like Cheryl's indifferent attitude."I'll do what Grandpa told me to do, and nothing more," Cheryl said. She wanted Wanda to give up on trying to get her to date Ian.Wanda pushed her, exasperated. "That's enough, Cheryl. We all know where this is going. Don't play innocent with me."Cheryl stumbled.Just then, the bodyguard came up to them. "It's time to go, Ms. York."Cheryl looked up. She hadn't noticed earlier, but now that she got a closer look, she found that the bodyguard looked familiar. However, she couldn't quite remember where she had met him before."Just remember what I told you. Get in the car." Wanda knew her limits. She'd already said what she needed to say, so she dared not keep Cheryl any longer.Cheryl got into the car. Immediately, Shane h
Cheryl pulled her hands away. "Jessie, you're not me, so you don't know what I'm worried about. I can't just leave."If she left, Luke might shift all his anger onto Wanda. Wanda was her mother. She couldn't just abandon her."Fine." Knowing that nothing she said would be able to change Cheryl's mind, Jessie leaned against the wall. "Since you don't want my help, all I can do is wish you a safe trip to Campton. Come back safely."Cheryl smiled. "I will.""When you return, I'll arrange another date for you and Uncle Henry," Jessie added.Cheryl remembered Wesley's warnings. She was worried that Henry might get in trouble if she continued to keep in contact with him, so she said to Jessie, "Maybe you shouldn't. I don't think Henry and I are a good match.""Huh?" Jessie was dumbfounded. "Why? I heard you say that Uncle Henry was great last time.""Henry will suffer if he dates someone like me," Cheryl said, half telling the truth. Jessie disagreed with her. "You can't just push
Cheryl began packing for a long trip as soon as she arrived home.Jessie watched her. "Cher…" she said hesitantly."You've been holding it in for the entire journey home. Just say what you want to say," Cheryl said. She could tell without looking that Jessie had a lot of things to say.Earlier, when she told Jessie about Luke's condition, she had braked hard and stopped the car in the middle of the highway. The constant honking by the cars behind them quickly alerted the traffic police. In the end, they were told off and issued a ticket before being allowed to leave. It was mortifying."Are you really going to go to Campton?" Jessie was incredibly anxious about it, even more so than Cheryl.Luke's condition was that Cheryl had to accompany Shane to Campton. It was scary because Shane was a mentally ill monster.Cheryl took out some clothes from her closet and threw them on her bed. "I don't have a choice. I can't say no to the Lincolns, so I have to go."Jessie went up to Chery
Luke did not look happy to see Cheryl. "Oh, so you do know your way home."Shane smiled at her. "Hello, Cher."Cheryl stared at Shane. He had tricked her and gotten her alone in Wanda's room earlier. Gavin said that he had yet to have any episodes that day. If so, what was he intending to do? He had looked like he was having an episode.Pulling her thoughts back together, she greeted Shane before turning to Luke. "I'm here to apologize, Grandpa," she said earnestly.Upon hearing that, Luke's expression softened. "Well, I'm glad to hear it. At least you're not a complete ingrate like I thought."Cheryl nodded. "I know you've spent a lot of time and effort raising me. From now on, I will live to serve the Lincoln family. I won't try to leave again. Please forgive me, Grandpa."Her words were against everything she believed in and worked for, but she had no choice. She had to admit defeat. The Lincoln family was a cage that she would never be able to escape.Satisfied by her meekn
There was a faint smile on Cheryl's face. Her melancholy seemed to have disappeared."That's better." Ian raised his hand and poked her in the forehead. "A young woman of your age should be lively and happy. Don't look so sad all the time. You know you can always talk to me, right? Don't keep everything to yourself. You're going to get depressed."Ian was really good at making her feel better."I know, Ian," Cheryl smiled. "Thanks."This smile was sincere, unlike her normal forced smile."Come on, I'll walk you back," Ian offered."Okay." Cheryl did not turn him down. They talked and laughed with each other, oblivious to the two figures standing on the other side of the corridor. The hairs on the back of Mike's neck were standing on end. He'd just arrived to tell Wesley about what happened to Cheryl just now, only to see the woman in question laughing with Ian.Mike stood frozen on the spot. He didn't dare to look at Wesley.Damn it. Why couldn't Cheryl smile at Wesley every
"What? Apologize to your Uncle Wes right now," Wanda chastised. "Don't make the same mistake in the future."Cheryl held her elbow. The pinch hurt a lot.Swallowing her grievances, she lowered her head, too scared to look Wesley in the eye. "I'm sorry for bumping into you, Uncle Wes."Wesley's eyes strayed over to her elbow. "What happened?" he asked."I…" Cheryl hesitated. Shane often had his episodes. Out of guilt, Luke typically ignored his wrongdoings as long as he did not end up killing anyone. No one in the Lincoln family dared to say anything against Shane, and Cheryl wasn't even a member of the family. There was nothing she could do about it.With that in mind, she schooled her expression. "Nothing happened. I just forgot my manners."Wesley's expression was cold. "Don't do it again."Cheryl nodded.Wanda breathed a sigh of relief. She was surprised at Wesley's leniency. Normally, he wouldn't have let things go so easily.Luke had three sons by three women. Cheryl had always feared her stepfather, Shane. He was mentally ill, so he would sometimes act violently. After slamming the door, he stalked toward Cheryl with a smile on his face. Cheryl's instinct told her that he was having one of his episodes."Uncle Shane." Swallowing her fear, Cheryl plastered a smile onto her face to avoid angering Shane and asked politely, "Have you had breakfast?""I did," Shane said with an expression of concern. "You just came back, Cher. You haven't had breakfast yet, right?"Cheryl backed away slowly. "I did. Where's my mom, Uncle Shane?"She thought her movements were slow and unnoticeable, but Shane caught on almost immediately. He stepped forward. "I haven't seen Wanda the entire morning. Why are you backing away, Cheryl? Are you scared of me?"Cheryl's back was drenched in cold sweat. "No, of course not. Why would I be scared of you?"There was no one else in the room. Cheryl knew she shouldn't provoke Shane, but she couldn't just stall like t
"You should eat something," Zane said, pushing some plates toward Jessie. "Don't starve yourself."Jessie thanked him, but she did not pick up her fork. She kept staring at her phone, waiting for Cheryl to reply to her messages.Exasperated, Zane tried to strike up a conversation. "Is Ms. York a doctor?""Yeah," Jessie said, perking up. "Cher is doing her postgraduate studies in neurology. She's very good at what she does.""Psychology?" Zane wasn't surprised by Cheryl's career as a doctor, but he was surprised by her specialization. "Why did Ms. York choose that specialization?"Jessie's expression went stony at that. "You asked too many questions."Zane looked panicked. "I'm sorry. I was just curious."Jessie pursed her lips."It's a good choice. I've been to their campus on an exchange program before, and I heard that she was excellent," Henry said mildly.Jessie gave him a strange look. "I thought this was the first time you met Cher. I didn't know you'd met her before, Un
It had been a long time since Cheryl last thought of her father, long enough that all she remembered of him was a vague memory. If she didn't have photos, she would sometimes forget what he looked like. Her father's name was Nathan York."Why did you bring him up so suddenly, Uncle Wes?" Cheryl asked in confusion.Wesley did not answer. Instead, he asked, "Do you resent him?""There's nothing much to resent him about," Cheryl said blankly. "He died when I was still a toddler. My grandparents fought for my custody, but my mom won and brought me with her when she married Uncle Shane. I don't even remember him much."Cheryl rarely confided in others. However, for some reason, she couldn't seem to help but bare herself before Wesley. Unfortunately, Wesley was a cold-hearted bastard who held no compassion for her."You haven't answered me yet. Why did you suddenly bring up my father?" Cheryl wanted to know."Just a random thought." Wesley stood up. It was clear that he was not intere
