Evelyn’s POV

I walked with the elder who took me to a different part of the garden and looked around to make sure no one was following us.

“Welcome back to the pack,” he said as I nodded. “Now you’re back, I’m guessing you’re going to start trying to take back what is rightfully yours.”

That was a stretch but now I was confused on why he had said that.

“Oh come on,” he said with a laugh. “Don’t act dumb. I know you have a plan to take back your place as his mate.”

“Look, I’m done fighting with the alpha. You know Orion. Once he makes up his mind, that is that. I can’t push him out of his ideas. Just leave me alone.”

“So you’re not going to do anything about that strange woman in the palace that is in your quarters?”

I halted in my steps as I slowly turned to him.

How did he know that Hazel was in my quarters?

But how wouldn’t he know? He was an elder in the palace. There was no way he wouldn’t know.

But I already had a plan brewing and I wasn’t going to waste my time with the elder.

Orion’s povAfter finishing the last bit of work in my study, I leaned back in my chair and stretched. The day had been long and exhausting, filled with reports, patrol updates, and handling minor disputes within the pack. My stomach growled, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten since breakfast. I sighed, pushing away from my desk. I needed to head to the dining hall before the chefs packed everything up for the night.I wondered if Evelyn had finally eaten and given up on waiting for me as my wolf laughed.‘You already know who Evelyn is. She won’t give up on you. She is going to make sure she milks you for all you have.’I mentally shut my wolf away as I didn’t want to hear anything from him anymore. As soon as I entered the common room of the palace I saw Evelyn waving at me smiling while sitting at the chair. But I felt like something was amiss or better said someone was not present here. I parked this thought for now. Let me handle her first and we would know what to do next.I sat

Hazel’s POVThe sunlight streamed in through the slats in the wall of the shed, leaving patches of light that danced across the floor where Mara, Lily and I stood. We were working on something new today; a healing technique Mara had been excited to teach us. She was going on about pressure points, something important with interest at certain points on what appeared to be a dummy laid out before us so she could teach us the basics of it all. Her voice was steady, but her hands sure as she pointed to different areas over its chest and abdomen.“These are the pressure points you want to know when applying this moves.” Mara pressed into it with her fingers for emphasis. “If someone has extreme internal hemorrhaging, you’ll use this point here-”I watched, listening with an intensity I hadn't felt in years. This was knowledge I needed to acquire and I wasn’t going to mess it up. Lily stood against the wall next to me, arms crossed with a slight grin on her face. She made a funny face wh

Hazel’s POVThe dining hall seemed to close in on itself as Evelyn’s eyes met mine. It was very clear she didn’t want me here and she didn’t even hide her dangerous eyes as she wanted me to stand up and leave. She sat to the left of Alpha Orion, so perfectly poised and self-confident I might have thought she belonged there. But I didn’t belong here in any way shape or form.“You,” Her voice was a knife through the space between us. “What are you doing here? Weren’t you supposed to stay away?”I opened my mouth to reply but thought vaguely better — silence was the best form of reply with that one. Before I had time to think about her question and answer Orion’s voice cut in, calm and firm. “Evelyn, enough.”Her lips turned into a tight line, and she reclined in her chair, obviously not happy with his interruption.I kept my hands on my laps as I wrung my fingers with my insides telling me to remain calm and not be bothered by anything going on here.Soon, the doors opened with maids c

Evelyn’s povI leaned back in my seat, feeling smug as I watched that Hazel girl scurry out of the dining hall. A smug smile played on my lips. It had taken long enough to rattle her. She thought she could come into my world and take something that didn’t belong to her? Not in this lifetime. She was stupid to think my Orion was hers. Well, I would show her that I didn’t like to share my men and Orion was mine and mine alone. He wasn’t for other women.I don’t care if Orion wants her, he was mine and no one was taking him away from me.Orion soon finished his meal and took off right after her, not looking once my way. I knew he was mad at me, but I didn’t care. That would be changing soon enough. Once I claimed what was rightfully mine with him and broke Hazel in the process.I stood, smoothing my dress. It was time for me to go to my room. Just as I started down the hallway, my maid came up behind me and curtsied nervously. “My Lady Evelyn, I thought you might want to know about Ha

Hazel’s POVI stayed where I was as Evelyn started to leave the shed, her parting steps were still sharp in my ears. My hands were shaking slightly and all of a sudden my insides felt heavy. Mara saw me frozen there and realised that something was wrong; she came up to me with a look of concern etched on her face.“Are you okay?” She asked as I nodded with a small smile.“I’m fine. I just… I just need a break.” Mara looked like she wanted to keep pushing, but she nodded and left me alone. There was no holding the tears back now, and I hurried from the shed because I didn’t want anyone to see me crying. I ran into the palace, heading for my room as each step I took felt heavier than the last.I tried to hold myself from falling as my vision swam. It was hard to run when the tears kept obscuring my vision. When I got to my room, I opened it and entered with a sigh.I stayed and leaned against the door to cry a bit as I flopped to the ground. My sides wracked with tears as I sighed an

Evelyn’s POVI made my way to Orion’s office, anxiety and excitement had my heart racing. I needed to see him this morning and maybe get him to acknowledge me even if it was just a tiny bit. When I reached Orion’s office door in no time, I found the door was left ajar. I pushed it open slowly, keeping myself from barging in impatiently in front of him. The room looked dark with only a few lamps lit and smelled heavily of wood and leather; Orion sat behind his huge desk buried under piles of papers he seemed to be looking over thoroughly. “Orion,” I whispered, hoping to break through his concentration. “Is there anything I can do to help? You seem like you’re up to your neck in work.”He blew out a long breath and glanced up at me, his emerald green eyes locking on to mine. “I’m fine, Evelyn. Just stressed.”I frowned. It was as if he hadn’t noticed me there—his own mate. I wanted to tell him about my travels, the things I’d seen and discovered while I was gone, but he was still star

Evelyn’s POVThat was outrageous I told myself. If he wanted stories then I could make some myself. Besides, I knew I was well traveled more than that wench who thought she could steal my man.“But it feels like he doesn’t see me. I tried to talk to him earlier and he pushed me off,” I said with a trembling voice, “He’s always busy, and when he does have time, it seems to be with her. I can’t help but feel like I’m losing him.”She took a step closer and placed a hand on my shoulder. “You are strong, my lady. You have to believe in yourself. The alpha chose you as his mate for a reason. You have a bond that no one can come between.”I appreciated her words, but they did little to ease the storm inside me. I needed to take action. I couldn’t just sit back and let Hazel take what was rightfully mine. The thought of confronting Orion again filled me with a mix of fear and determination. I wanted to show him how much I cared, but I also needed to protect what we had.“Thank you, Lila,” I

My wolf growled its agreement but I bit back a sigh and forced myself to calm down. I wasn’t going to let her see how much she was getting on my last nerve.I felt my hands clench into fists at my sides in realization that I was about to lose it. Steady, sure strides.Orion returned from wherever he’d excused himself to, his tall form making it over to us in only a few lunges of his long legs. Both Hazel and I stared at him. Both of us smiled, happy to see him. “Orion,” I crooned sweetly, still smiling as my gaze met his intense black eyes. “I was just on my way out.”He no doubt felt the sudden tension in the garden, but other than raising a brow to know what was going on, he didn’t say anything to mak

Orion’s pov"Everything's fine," I assured her, starting the car. "Let's go."I slammed on the gas as I drove off while the hum of the engine filled up the place with tense silence. My knuckles around the wheel turned white as I squeezed it and I frowned as I was focused on what I was doing. With time passing us I started to get even angrier and I hated it.“Orion,” her slurry voice came on as I sighed and growled. “Orion…”I couldn’t help myself any longer. “What?” I snapped at her.“I—I’m sorry,” she stammered, her voice small.I shot her a sharp glance then looked back at the road. “Stop,” I told her, my voice firm but controlled. She blinked, confused. “Stop what?”“It’s enough with the apology. You can stop,” I said with a snap with frustration in my tone. “I have so many questions but what I want to know is how you ended up being drunk in the first place.”Hazel hesitated, her hands twisting together anxiously in her lap. “I didn’t mean to,” she whispered.“Then what did you do?

Now, are you going to come with us quietly and let us teach you a lesson, or do we have to drag you out?” I stepped forward, letting my growl echo out through the area. “Last chance. Move.”For a split second the bouncers hesitated, then they loomed in like wolves and I was moving faster than them.Using my heightened reflexes, I snatched the baton of the one closest to me as he tried to hit me with his baton, snapping it in half and tossing it aside with one hand. Where is she?”He shrugged, annoyingly unfazed by my mounting irritation. “She’s at a party.”This was crazy. Was he being serious now?“A party? What do you mean a party?” I couldn’t help but notice that my voice rose to a high point as I punctuated every word. “You’re joking with me aren’t you? Hazel would never leave the packhouse. She is supposed to be here. How could she be at a party right now?”He smirked and his gaze was unwavering. “Why don’t you ask around, Alpha, if you doubt me? Orion’s povI was in my office going through some meeting with the elders who only yelled and talked about nothing that I would pay attention to if I was being honest. After their complaints, I nodded and told them I would fix it as they left the room. With a sigh, I leaned back and watched them leave as I looked at the time and sighed again.“Goddess, I hate this life,” I muttered as my wolf appeared before me and laughed.“Welcome to the life of being an alpha,” he said as I chuckled. “I don’t get it,” I said to my feet, walking to the large windows. “I understand that they don’t want me with an outsider but this is too much. The way they’ve been acting and treating me it’s been too much. They’ve been acting like I want to betray the pack.”“To be honest, if I were one of the elders and had no affiliation with hazel, I would want to get away too. She’s been labeled an outcast, she’s from the neighboring pack. We hate them and they hate us. We’ve been at war. What did you think was

Hazel’s povWhen Evelyn had mentioned the party to me earlier, I hadn’t known she was for real. I was in my room, combing through my wardrobe when she breezed in without knocking, a self-satisfied smirk spread across her face.“Sweetie stop whatever it is you’re hunting for in that cupboard,” she declared dramatically waving a paper bag.“I’ve got stuff. And believe me it's way cooler than anything you’re thinking about wearing.”“What are those?” I blinked at her. She walked over to my bed and dumped the bag on top of it. “Dresses. Party dresses. You’re not going out there looking like a librarian. You need to make an entrance.” But my clothes are good. There is nothing wrong with them. She laughed. “Let me see one of them.”I got to my wardrobe and got out a dress as I wore it and showed her which didn’t work as she laughed even louder.“What are you laughing for?”“I’m sorry,” she said before bawling out again. “Where did you pick that? Orion’s povI was seated at the large oak table as I clasped my hands on my laps together. The elders who were around me with their voices raised were shouting about something that I rolled my eyes about but I didn’t care either way. One of the elders, elder Gerik’s voice, cut through the noise. “She doesn’t belong here, Orion. She’s a rogue. An outcast,” he said, his gaze hard.I didn’t respond immediately. I kept my eyes on the table, letting the words hang in the air. The room fell quiet, but only for a moment.Elder Alia chimed in, her voice cold and sharp. “We’ve tolerated her presence long enough. You cannot harbor a rogue in this pack. If we let her stay, others will come. We’ll be overrun by outcasts.”“And what are we supposed to do, send her away?” I asked, finally breaking my silence.Elder Gerik leaned forward. “Yes. She’s a threat. A rogue from Shadowclaw. She could be plotting something. You can’t trust her, Orion.”I looked at him with rage. If only I could tell them t

I wanted to shut it out. I wanted to focus on what I was doing and push through, but it only became more pronounced with every mistake I made. It felt like they were all staring right at me, seeing me for who I really was. A failure and an outcast.Mara’s voice cut through the laughter, sharp and cold as ice. “Hazel. What is this?” Disappointment oozed from her.I winced. I hadn’t been expecting that reaction at all.“I can’t believe it,” Mara snapped. “You didn’t understand a word of what I taught you in class. This is a basic healing technique and you failed it.”My heart thudded in my chest like an exhausted bird flapping its wings against a harsh wind. She was wrong—I had tried. Evelyn’s povI left Hazel’s room with a heavy heart, my steps slow and deliberate as I made my way to my own room. My emotions were in turmoil, some of them beyond me, I couldn’t even put them into words. It wasn’t just the fact that Hazel had turned down my attempt at friendship. I had come to extend an olive branch, and she had shut the damn door. I had tried to be the better person but she’d seen right through it. And for some reason that hurt.Who did she think she was to act all high and mighty? Oh she was just trying out and she was thinking she was hotcake. I would show her what she was missing. When I got into my room, instead of finding a seat or attempting to clear my head I went straight towards the small table where tea was already being steamed down by one of my maids’.“Give me a painkiller,” I muttered to the maid as I dropped down onto the chair by the window. “And don’t give me anything weak. I stopped dead in my tracks.“Hazel,” she said as I shook my head and got back into my room. Before I could even step back to close the door, she was faster than I expected. She stuck her hand in the way just before the door slammed shut. The force of it made her wince slightly, but she didn’t pull her hand back. I noticed the way her hand immediately started to heal, the skin knitting back together, and the redness fading quickly as if she hadn’t even been hurt at all.Frowning, I couldn’t understand what she was doing here. “What do you want?” my voice came out both cautious and suspicious as all hell kept racing through my mind; What could she possibly want now?She smiled at me, but it didn’t reach her eyes.
