Evelyn’s POV

I made my way to Orion’s office, anxiety and excitement had my heart racing. I needed to see him this morning and maybe get him to acknowledge me even if it was just a tiny bit.

When I reached Orion’s office door in no time, I found the door was left ajar. I pushed it open slowly, keeping myself from barging in impatiently in front of him.

The room looked dark with only a few lamps lit and smelled heavily of wood and leather; Orion sat behind his huge desk buried under piles of papers he seemed to be looking over thoroughly.

“Orion,” I whispered, hoping to break through his concentration. “Is there anything I can do to help? You seem like you’re up to your neck in work.”

He blew out a long breath and glanced up at me, his emerald green eyes locking on to mine. “I’m fine, Evelyn. Just stressed.”

I frowned. It was as if he hadn’t noticed me there—his own mate. I wanted to tell him about my travels, the things I’d seen and discovered while I was gone, but he was still star

Evelyn’s POVThat was outrageous I told myself. If he wanted stories then I could make some myself. Besides, I knew I was well traveled more than that wench who thought she could steal my man.“But it feels like he doesn’t see me. I tried to talk to him earlier and he pushed me off,” I said with a trembling voice, “He’s always busy, and when he does have time, it seems to be with her. I can’t help but feel like I’m losing him.”She took a step closer and placed a hand on my shoulder. “You are strong, my lady. You have to believe in yourself. The alpha chose you as his mate for a reason. You have a bond that no one can come between.”I appreciated her words, but they did little to ease the storm inside me. I needed to take action. I couldn’t just sit back and let Hazel take what was rightfully mine. The thought of confronting Orion again filled me with a mix of fear and determination. I wanted to show him how much I cared, but I also needed to protect what we had.“Thank you, Lila,” I

Evelyn’s POVI planted myself in place, my eyes trained on Hazel, and felt my blood begin to simmer. How dare she defy me! Why was she standing there laughing at me like I was some sort of joke? My wolf growled its agreement but I bit back a sigh and forced myself to calm down. I wasn’t going to let her see how much she was getting on my last nerve.I felt my hands clench into fists at my sides in realization that I was about to lose it. That I was about to scream and rage and yell at her.And then I heard footsteps behind me. Steady, sure strides.Orion returned from wherever he’d excused himself to, his tall form making it over to us in only a few lunges of his long legs. Both Hazel and I stared at him. Both of us smiled, happy to see him. “Orion,” I crooned sweetly, still smiling as my gaze met his intense black eyes. “I was just on my way out.”He no doubt felt the sudden tension in the garden, but other than raising a brow to know what was going on, he didn’t say anything to mak

His was the voice of a smoker—low and rough."It's not like I have time to waste," I countered, fighting the urge to shrink beneath his looming shadow.Leif crossed his arms, his gaze cutting. “What kind of job?”I sucked in a breath and forced the words out. “There’s a girl—Hazel is her name. She’s new to the pack, and I’m looking to have her removed.”His brow rose fractionally before he laughed softly. “Hazel, huh? What’s she done to earn your wrath?”I didn’t want to say it—I was too proud to admit the truth. “She’s a threat.”“A threat?” he echoed, tilting his head. “What kind of threat?”“You wouldn’t understand,” I snapped, my frustration leaking out.Leif chuckled, obviously entertained. “Okay, but if you want me to box her… it will cost ya.”“I’ll pay. Author’s povLeif’s head snapped up, his interest piqued. He lowered his phone slightly, his lips curling into a small smile. “You know her?”The man snorted, grabbing a nearby chair and plopping down across from Leif. “Know her? Everyone around here knows her—or used to. She’s trouble, that one.”Leif leaned back in his chair, swirling his whiskey in its glass. “Go on,” he said, his tone casual but his eyes sharp. The man squinted at the photo on Leif’s phone again, as if making sure it was the same person. “Yeah, that’s Hazel. She was from the Shadowclaw pack, but she ain’t there anymore.”“Why not?” Leif asked, feigning mild curiosity. The man leaned closer, lowering his voice as if sharing some great secret. “Because she got thrown out. The alpha rejected her as his mate. Didn’t want her. Said she wasn’t good enough. Guess she couldn’t take the humiliation, so she made some trouble from what I heard and she got kicked out. Ain’t been seen around here since.”Leif raised an eyebrow

Evelyn’s povI paced back and forth in my room, the information Leif had found about Hazel circling my thoughts. A Shadowclaw reject—how perfect. How could she think she deserved Orion? She didn’t belong with him and his power. Not like I did, I was the daughter of the pack, she was a rogue, without a pack or a history. She was beneath me—and soon enough, Orion would realize that too.It was time for phase two of my plan. I had done phase one which was gathering information. Phase two was to execute.Evening had arrived, and I knew it wouldn’t be long before Orion would be in his study or somewhere around the pack.I looked at myself in the mirror, adjusting my hair so that every strand was in its place. A smile curved up my lips as I saw my reflection- confident, elegant and poised. I was Orion’s fated mate; the girl they had picked out for him through strategy and bonds. No she-wolf could take my place no matter who they thought she was. When I arrived at the pack house, I found Ori

Evelyn’s povHe looked around in shock as the words I had said to him started to sink into his head and I smiled. This was how it was supposed to be. He should listen to me and he should not listen to anyone else.I was so glad the part of hazel being from shadowclaw wasn’t a lie as I knew he would come after me for that one. As for the one of her being a spy, it wouldn’t matter now he knew she was from the warring pack.“Ryder rejected her once,” I continued, “but now he wants her back. And he promised that if she gave him what he needed to destroy us… he’d take her back into his pack and make her his mate.”Orion just stared at me, his eyes searching mine as though he was looking for some kind of flaw in my story. But I knew that there wasn’t one to find. Everything I had just told him was the truth, and now it seemed like the weight of that was finally starting to settle in for him.“You really expect me to believe that?” he asked, but there was no real strength in his voice.I str

Orion’s povI sat in my study, the quiet of the room not stilling my troubled thoughts. Evelyn’s words recurred again and again in my head, and every time they did they sounded less absurd and hit home with greater doubt. Hazel? Of the Shadowclaw pack? A spy? I felt sick at heart at the thought. I wanted to dismiss it all as a fit of petty envy—what else could it be?—but her words stuck too solidly for comfort. With sudden restlessness, I rose from my chair, too weary to stay where I was. The house seemed oppressively congested; already I needed air.My feet crunched against the gravel path as I walked, going nowhere in particular. The garden should have been a haven, but it felt more like a theater with each shadow a voice containing doubts and questions. Scent of flowers drifted into my nostrils with wind rustling through trees that shed their tears over the earth and moon.I just wanted to have peace and quiet in this place and make sure I was on my own. Orion’s povAfter staying in the garden for a while, I decided it was time to head in. I stomped my way in my room, shutting the door behind me and leaning against it as a heavy sigh escaped my lips. The dim light coming from the bedside lamp was hardly enough to push away the darkness enveloping my mind. The weight of the day’s events kept pressing me down and I couldn’t dismiss any longer the uneasy stirring of my wolf.“You know, instead of stirring within me like a shark below the waters, you can show up and tell me what you need. Maybe we can work on it.”A smoke appeared before me as my wolf appeared in its full size before me.If it wasn’t my wolf I would feel threatened as its size was massive and it didn’t look friendly at all. This was what people saw when they looked at me in my wolf form.“We need to talk,“ I heard his voice breaking through the silence of my thoughts.“Now I’m wondering what you want to talk about,” I rolled my eyes as I walked to the window to look out

Author’s povThe throne room of the Red moon pack was a buzz with thick tension as Hazel who had returned, stood proud and tall. She called for a meeting with both the elders of the red moon pack and the shadowclaw pack. It had taken Orion a leap of faith to extend an invitation to every important dignitary as he knew that Hazel who looked looked different this time after her travels had something important to say.She looked different from how she had been before traveling. With everyone seated in the court while she stood in the middle, she started the meeting. Hazel’s voice didn’t waver. “I’ve had no reason to doubt you before, Ryder,” she said, her eyes still locked on his. “But I wouldn’t have called this meeting if I wasn’t one hundred percent sure. You owe me justice―and you’re going to give it to me today.”Ryder laughed in disbelief and leaned back even farther in his chair. “Justice?” he asked disdainfully. “What kind of justice do you think you’re entitled to? Seriously?

I didn’t know how long I had been down here since Kael had tossed me in this hole but it didn’t matter the time right now because if anything my anger had just intensified. My hands were shackled before me but that didn’t bother me. What bothered me was why I was here.I had done nothing wrong in my book. The heavy boots pounded down the hallway. I straightened, lifting my chin as the door creaked open.Kael stepped in, towering over me as much as he filled the small space. His expression was a mask, but I saw the tightness in his jaw, the anger in his sharp eyes. He folded his arms over his chest and studied me.“Where did you take Hazel?” The question was soft, and controlled, but I could hear the blame lacing it.I scoffed, rolling my eyes. “You’re delusional, Kael. I didn’t take Hazel anywhere.”His expression darkened. “Don’t lie to me, Evelyn. I know you were involved in her disappearanc

Hazel’s povI journeyed for a long time before I arrived at the spot Ryder had directed. There, tucked in between those boulders, was a large dark cave. Everything became dead silent all around me and for a moment, I stood still and doubted myself. But it quickly ended when my eyes landed on her.Alongside the entrance to the abyss, a figure sat there and it was an elderly woman, with long silver hair sliding down her back. She looked as if she would crumble right under herself yet something about her seemed so powerful.I took a step forward, opening my mouth to speak but before I could get a word out she lifted her head and looked straight at me."Hazel." She said softly.I froze. How does she know my name? Before I could ask, movement flickered in my periphery. More people were stepping out from the shadows of the mountains. Men and women in dark cloaks. Their gazes held something I couldn’t quite grasp. Recognition. And... happiness when they saw me.“She’s come back,” someone bre

I know I hurt you but I didn’t know you were pregnant, or that the baby was Orion’s. If I had known—”I cut him off, my voice sharp. “Stop acting like you didn’t know. But you did know I was pregnant, Ryder. You knew, and you still banished me. In front of my parents. Do you have any idea how much that hurt? Do you have any idea how much you humiliated me?”Ryder’s shoulders slumped, and he nodded, his voice barely above a whisper. “I know, Hazel. I know I hurt you. And I’ll never forgive myself for that. But I’m here now. I’m trying to make things right.”I sighed, my face softening slightly. “I already said I’d help your mother, R

Hazel’s povI woke up the next morning and an ungodly heaviness sat on my chest. The argument from yesterday was the first thing I thought of—Evelyn’s betrayal, my escape, Kael stopping me. It left me angry and feeling restless and I couldn’t lock myself in this room all day to lick my wounds. I needed some air—to breathe, to think. With that said, I got out of bed and dressed quickly while making a path for the door. There wasn’t much noise in the rooms as made it way down the hallway, except for a faint hum of footsteps… the maids were working no doubt. No one was in the garden when I arrived so early this morning. But as I stepped foot into the garden, my feet froze. There, with his back to me, stood someone I never expected to see again—Alpha Ryder of my old pack. My heart skipped a beat and I was hit with a wave of emotions—anger, terror, confusion. What in the world is he doing here? After everything he had done to me—after banishing me from my own pack when he found out about m

Hazel’s POV He untied my hands, rough but not sloppy. I don’t think he wanted to hurt me. Not yet. I worked my wrists when he was done, enjoying the tingle as circulation returned.Mark yanked me upright by one arm, easy enough that it wasn't painful. He marched and dragged me towards the only partially closed door at the far end of the room, his eyes flicking around, wary. But so was I.I stepped into the bathroom, closing the door behind me and my heart pounding. This was it. My only chance. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself, and then I waited for a while before I exited the door into the room.Mark was standing a few feet away from me, his back turned as he used his lighter to light a cigarette. He didn’t turn his head when he heard my footsteps coming toward him. He had no fear in that moment. And that’s when I got him. With every ounce of strength I had, I kicked him. Hard. Author’s povRyder wrinkled his nose, his annoyance heightening. “Why?”“Because she’s busy,” Kael said in anger.“Busy doing what? I told you it was important. My mother is dying.”Kael’s mouth flattened and he closed the distance between him and Ryder, speaking in a low, rigid voice. “I said she’s busy, Ryder. That’s all you need to know. And if you’re hurt and in need of healing’, our pack has plenty who are more than qualified for the job.”Ryder narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest. “With all due respect, Kael, I didn’t come here for your healers. I came here for Hazel. She’s the only one who can help my mother. So, if you know where she is, tell me.”Kael’s gaze hardened as he took another step closer. His voice was sharp when he spoke again. “I don’t owe you anything Ryder. You’re a guest here and you will respect our rules.Hazel is not available to you. Orion’s povThe following morning, I awoke early, my mind full of the day’s agenda. One of the first things I had to do was let Hazel know that her old alpha, Ryder, would be coming to the packhouse. She and he had a… difficult history, and I wanted to warn her in advance. I dressed quickly then headed down the hall to her room.I rapped on her closed door and called out, “Hazel? It’s Orion; we need to talk.”There was no answer. I knocked again, harder. “Hazel? Are you home?”Silence. I squinted my eyes and reached for the doorknob. Something was not right. The door swung open and creaked under my weight. No one was there. The bed was made perfectly and looked exactly as it did before she left this morning—empty.“Hazel?” I called out again, my voice bouncing back in the empty room.Silence. I took a few steps toward the dresser and pulled on the handle. It opened easily, revealing Hazel’s neatly folded clothes. All of her personal items were still there, exactly as she’d left them w

Orion’s povKael stared at me for a long moment before he finally nodded his head, his voice quiet. “Alright, Orion. I’ll trust you on this but if things go wrong it’s your head.”I smiled in reassurance and relief. “I know. And I’m ready to take that responsibility.”Kael dropped back down into the chair again, his voice still so serious for one so young. “So what’s the plan then? How do we help Ryder’s mother without putting the pack in danger?” I stood up straighter, my mind spinning with ideas. “We’ll start by sending some healers to Ryder’s pack. They can check on his mother and try to heal her if they’re able. But they’ll also be guarded in case Ryder tries anything.”Kael agreed with a slow nod, his gaze distant. “Okay. That’s a good precaution to take, but we can’t afford not to plan for the worst case either. How about bringing him into our own pack.”“I don’t like the idea, Kael. Bringing Ryder into our pack? After everything he’s done? It feels like we’re inviting trouble.
