Nobody knew how much time had passed when we started hearing the hooves of horses. Without thinking, I jumped off my bed and rushed towards the door.

“They are back!”

“They are back”

Yells that the soldiers were back rang in the hall and Serena and Lillian also jumped off their beds rushing out of the door towards the huge courtyard and then I saw red.

So red that I was almost blinded by it. I blinked my eyes, trying to wonder what could be this red and it took me a while before I realized what I was staring at. It was blood. Bloodied soldiers spread across the courtyard and I covered my mouth in shock as I staggered backwards.

“Oh my god” Lillian whispered and I could clearly hear the sob that choked in her throat.

I watched as more and more soldiers were carried into the courtyard and then Masoma appeared in a hurry. I could see the worry and fear in her eyes as she moved around the soldiers throwing out instructions to them in quick, practiced manners.

She was trying to be calm but I could see her hands shaking and her face marred with worry. She kept looking towards the gate but I couldn’t figure out why. She suddenly turned to us and our eyes locked.

“Why are you staring and standing there?” She asked suddenly.

“Get bowls of water and clothes and help out, don’t just stand there!” she yelled and  swallowed, my feet still rooted to the ground.

“Let’s.. Let’s help out” Serena stuttered.

“Lillian, get the bowls of water” She added, “Amira, get the clothes” she added and I turned to her.

“Now!” she yelled and I immediately burst into a race, my ears ringing.

The sight I had just seen was extremely stimulating and I don't ever remember seeing that kind of sight in a long time. With blood pumping through my chest and my ears, I grabbed as many clothes as possible rushing towards the courtyard.

“There are bandages, trying to stop the bleeding and wrap their injuries. Your job is as simple as that, we’ll take care of it from that point” Masoma instructed. I could see the lady that had attended to me when I had fainted running around. Our eyes met once but none of us had the luxury of time to say anything.

I bent down beside one of the soldiers trying to stop his bleeding. He had been stabbed through his stomach and I tried using the cloth to stop his bleeding but the water had turned red yet the bleeding was yet to stop.

I wiped the sweat that had formed around my forehead as I kept trying to stop the bleeding. The bleeding suddenly splashed on me and I blinked my eyes, wiping the blood off my face as I stuck the cloth to the wound.

“I’m so sorry” I pleaded with the soldier who was staring at me with lowered eyes. I doubt if he could feel the pain of the stab. The bleeding finally stopped and I quickly bandaged his wound.

“They will come and check up on you now” I informed him as I carried the bowl and moved to empty it. The water had turned so red that you could easily mistake it for blood.

I was about to move onto the next soldier when there was a loud yell. I stared at the entrance as someone rushed in with soldiers with mean faces guarding whoever it was. I was quick to recognize one of the guards as Jonathan’s personal guard. I stood on my toe starting to see who it was and the moment I did, my blood ran cold.

It was Jonathan, his eyes were closed and his cloth was soaked in blood.

“Is that the king?” someone asked behind me.

“He’s badly injured” someone else chipped in.

“You!” Masooma yelled as I turned to her.

“Come with me” she added as she rushed into the palace. I stood frozen on the spot before I rushed after her. My head was spinning as I rushed in after her. I couldn’t believe that Jonathan had gotten injured, he was strong and smart and I knew that. I also knew he was a good fighter and I couldn’t believe that he had gotten injured, he was supposed to be the Alpha of the pack and the king and he had gotten injured.

The guards stopped me before I could enter Jonathan’s private quarters. “I’m with Masoma” I yelled at me and he glared at me instead.

“No slave will be allowed into the king’s quarters” he sneered at me in reply and I blinked, his reply hitting me deeply. I swallowed as I stepped back instinctively.

“What the hell are you doing?” Masoma’s voice echoed in the room and I froze. The soldier returned to her, his voice softening immediately.

“Nothing. Just the slave trying to be a nuisance” the soldier and Masoma chuckled.

“Trying to be a nuisance? She’s with me, let her in” shoe hurled at me in obvious irritation and the soldier stared at her in surprise.

“She? The slave?” he stammered and Masoma scoffed.

“Are you deaf? Do you need me to repeat myself?” she asked and the soldier opened his mouth to reply to her but Maosma beat him to it.

“Shut up. You open that door now, this concerns the king's life or can you answer that?” she asked and the soldier instinctively, he stepped aside and i walked after Masoma.

“Stop his bleeding” I grabbed the cloth and stared at Jonathan’s unmoving body and hesitated on what to do.

“Why are you staring?” Masoma asked me, “Get to work!” she yelled at me and immediately I got to work, using the cloth to soak blood but the blood wouldn’t stop. But I kept at it.

Masoma stared at the unstopping blood and at the pot of water that had turned to blood already and our eyes met.

“The bleeding won’t stop,” I replied, my voice quivering.

“His special body constitution would not allow that. Stay here with him, I’ll be back” she said and I froze.

“Amira, under your watch, no harm comes to the King”

Masoma’s words washed over me, over and again.Amira, under your watch, no harm comes to the King”I paused my movement slowly, staring at Jonathan who was motionless on the bed. His face was pale from his constant loss of blood and I couldn't imagine the sneer or scowl that he usually wore. On the bed with his eyes closed, he couldn't maliciously call me princess or strangle me or make life hell for me. Memories flooded my head as I kept staring at him while my face remained blank. He was harmless just like this on the bed and if I just stopped cleaning up his blood or stopped trying to stop his bleeding, he would most likely die; like I always wanted to.It was a case of reversed situations. This time around, I had the upper hand and he was the one who needed my help to live. The feeling courses through me and a small chuckle escapes my lips. I folded my hands as I kept staring at his unloving body, the blood had dyed the bed red and it wasn't stopping anytime soon. “Should I le

I didn’t think that I would have to watch Jonathan seriously like Masoma had claimed but the time soon came and it was even harder than I thought. Grinding herbs and applying them to his stabs every two hours was the easy part. I took liberty and asked some of the guards to help me with grinding and they gladly did and my only major job was to apply the herbs. It was tough to just stare at Jonathan without being able to kill him but then I had given Masoma my word that no harm would come to him. Just because they all saw that I was working tirelessly to save their king, the way the guards treated me was slightly better. And then like Masoma had said, his temperature did start to rise.I had to get warm basin’s of water and using a cloth to rub all over his body, over and over again but for some reason, the cloth and the water were the ones getting hot and soon the guards were running in and out with numerous clothes and basins of water while I tried hard to lower his temperature. THIRD PERSON’S POVMasoma hurried into the room dropping off her box of needles as soon as she saw that Jonathan was awake.“Thank goodness” she muttered as she moved towards him to examine him but Jonathan was in a foul mood but she didn’t care. Being in a foul mood was his default setting and she was too worried about his health to be worried about why he was in a foul mood.“You are fine now. I need to concoct more potions for you and watch what you eat, you need to replenish your blood back” Masoma finally spoke and Jonathan glanced at her, sighing softly.“Thank you” he said softly and Masoma scoffed.“Don’t thank me Your Highness, what you did was risky” Masoma replied, “I know you love your people and your soldiers? Even more, I know and I know it so well but jumping in like that to save them at the expense of your own life is what I will not subscribe to” she added.“Was I supposed to just watch?” Jonathan questioned with an edge in his voice and Masoma shook her head.“No. I

AMIRA’S POVI didn’t know when I slept off or how I slept off. All I knew was that I had cried for a reasonable amount of time before I slowly drifted to sleep. All Serena had done was pet me and ask me to stop crying but there was no way I could.Jonathan’s words, his sneering and angry gaze at me still felt directed to me even if he was no longer in front of me. His words had infiltrated into my soft tissues, even though I thought and believed that I had built enough walls to protect myself. Apparently, I was wrong, very wrong.I was so wrong, that no matter how strong the walls were, Jonathan could easily break them down with a look and I hated it. I wonder how all of the guards would look at me from now henceforth. I had tried my best to save the king but in return, he had given me even a harsher experience, it was tough not to imagine maybe their scoffing looks or maybe their pitiful looks and the truth was that I wanted none of them. I didn’t want the pitiful looks or the scoffi

“You can’t keep avoiding the king you know” Serena muttered as soon as we had stepped into the room. I glanced at her and chuckled, “Aren’t you doing just fine?” I asked and Serena laughed, shaking her head.“Of course I am but you are not going to avoid him forever. It’s been two weeks” Serena replied and I shrugged my shoulders, “We can go on like this” I replied as I climbed into my bed.“But you said for a while” Serena interjected and I swallowed, crossing my legs beneath me and adjusting my posture so that I would be facing Serena.“Do you want to exchange that badly?” I asked her, my voice getting smaller and Serena shook her head, “He didn’t know. Kareem told me he didn’t know” she replied and I pulled my eyebrows back in surprise.“Kareem? Are you talking about Commander Kareem?” I asked and Serena’s lips parted as she immediately turned her, coughing while an amused smile crawled up my lips.“I didn’t know you two were on a first name basis” I continued and Serena turned to

Finding out that Serena had a crush on Kareem was the most exciting thing that ever happened to me since I came to the Berg kingdom. I also didn’t think that Serena would subtly admit that she indeed had a crush on Kareem. Kareem was good looking, except that there were all bastards, most men in the Berg kingdom were good looking and muscular and fine looking but there was no way on earth I was going to describe my enemies and people who made life hard for me as handsome or good looking. I just couldn’t explain how I had become so excited just at the sound or the thought of it. I had imagined so much over the night, in two thousand ways how Kareem and Serena would end up, with kids, with a lovely son, and how Kareem would defend his love when people questioned him and all sorts. It wasn’t a surprise that I was already over the moon, imagining all sorts of things. I was always a lover girl, the girl who had her head in her books and stories. There was no romance novel or romance stor

It was a speculation in my heart and all of a sudden it had taken root. I shook the thought away as I headed straight to the clinic. I was finally starting at the clinic and I was excited for everything I would learn and do, everything that I would be there. It felt like I finally somewhat had a purpose. I wasn’t just slaving myself away here.I kept walking towards the clinic and when I arrived, I stared at the front, remembering the first two times I came by and for the first time, I was coming solely for myself. I easily found my way in. Masoma and her other clinic attendants were already working by the time I arrived and she immediately left them and came to me.“You are late” she said and I winced.“I’m sorry. I’ll be earlier” I replied and Masoma nodded.“It’s not a big deal. You can inform me if your chores are a lot and you are going to be late” she replied and I nodded.“Thank you” I said softly.“So it’s your first day and I’ll ask someone to take you around later. I stared into space thinking about Juniper's words, “She killed herself?” I whispered and Juniper nodded. “Yes. The whole kingdom was thrown into turmoil. Our King and Queen had departed just like that” he continued explaining while I just listened.“I thought your people didn’t like the Queen?” I asked and Juniper laughed.“Not at all. The council of elders had an elder who had a daughter who wanted to marry the king so he was bitter and besides it was against the laws of the kingdom but King Avery? He bent the law for her and Queen Tera was a beautiful Queen. She was kind and thoughtful and we all love her. Our people loved the King and Queen because in every way, they were amazing and they were kind. They loved us and we loved them in return” he replied as my eyes softened.“So imagine the kingdom when they both died, a little more than one week to each other” Juniper continued softly.“The whole kingdom was thrown into the morning, we couldn’t understand it. When the king died, p

I quickly packed my tools out of the room and took a glance at Jonathan. He had a blank face and an unreadable expression and I tried to think or guess about what could have gone wrong but he didn’t look like he wanted to talk.“Lock the door and take the key with you” he said in a soft voice and I glanced at him and nodded as I locked the door.“You can leave” he said as he climbed into the bed and closed his eyes. I stared at him wondering what was going on. He slowly opened his eyes and turned to me.“Do you need something?” He asked and I opened my mouth to speak and I shook my head at the end.“Nothing of such your Highness. Please rest well, I’ll prevent anyone from disturbing you” I replied as I grabbed my tools and walked out the room closing the door on my way out.I walked out of the room, my back covered in sweat. The footsteps had made me jump in fright and I was scared that Jonathan would see me. I didn’t know why I had hidden the journal back and then I secretly hoped th

I watched Jonathan exit the room and I walked towards the store, standing in front of the door not knowing what to do. I was feeling apprehensive whether to open the door or not. I had almost asked Jonathan what was behind the door and I had stopped myself. If he wouldn’t tell me what the store and I found out on my own, I didn’t think he was going to like it so a better option was to keep quiet and allow him to tell him myself but I have a feeling that If i stepped into the room it was going to be obvious that the room belonged to is mother.I sucked in my breadth and backed away from the door staring at the door. I dangled the rusted keys in my hand, swallowing hard. I had no idea when last they cleaned the room, if it would be dirty or how it was going to look like. Jonathan had gone for a council meeting so I knew that he was going to take a long time before he came back but something also told me that he had intentionally found an excuse to leave the room because I was going to c

A lot of questions swirled in my head as I approached Jonathan’s room, I didn’t know where to start from, I didn’t know what to ask. Serena's words from the day before were yet to leave me. It was hard to believe that Jonathan had actually asked me to clean his mother’s store. Why? Was he hoping to torture me? Why would he want me to clean the store?I didn’t tell Serena that Jonathan had asked me to clean the store, I didn’t know what her reaction would be like, I didn’t even know how I was feeling either.I pushed the room door open and stepped inside, “Good morning Your Highness” I greeted him and Jonathan merely nodded at me, his face blank. My stomach churned at the look on his face, it told me that he was in a bad mood and insanity knew that I had to be careful myself. I couldn’t afford getting into his bad books anytime soon.I immediately washed my hands and walked towards the table, bringing out everything I needed to change his bandage and his herbs.“Masoma said you will be

“You sent him over” Serena complained but I doubted she was complaining. A small smile crawled up my face as I shrugged.“Are you complaining that I did?” I asked and Serena immediately shook her head, “Not at all” she replied chuckling.“When I saw him what did you expect me to do? You've been sulking for the past few days now, so of course I had to ask him to do some explanation but I figured out that it was also going to be better for me to do the explanation in person” I added and Serena chuckled.“Alright, alright” She replied and I nodded, feeling affected by Serena’s bustling mood.“So what did he say?” I asked and Serena sighed, getting serious.“The war aftermath was serious, the council of elders are throwing a fit, they are attributing the win as a loss because of the way things turned out and now they are implementing more strategies against wars and everything” Serena replied and I leaned on my back.“What strategies, this is a rogue kingdom, independent of every kingdom

As I marched towards the kingdom’s clinic, I wondered if what I was doing was right. It was quite rude to conclude that going straight to the kingdom’s clinic was the immediate action to take after speaking to Kareem. What he had said about Masoma had stayed with me, very few people had been nice to me since I got to the Berg kingdom and I was also quick to realize that Masoma was part of them.I vividly remembered the day my former roommates had beaten me after they had starved me till I had fainted. I remembered her words at the clinic that day as I drifted in and out of consciousness. I also remembered wondering what her words would mean, if it meant that she was on my side or not or if she was just waving me away. But now, I knew she was on my side and I’m suddenly realizing that she might have even spoken like that so intentionally so that Jonathan would take action but it was a speculation, she also didn’t somehow speculate that Jonathan would ask me to move to the palace, did sh
