All he ever wanted was to have friends. Kids who would invite him to play with them. He just wanted to have a normal childhood, that's all. No matter how hard he tried, nobody wanted to be his friend. They all laugh at him, especially because of the way he looked. His father is shoeshiner, sometimes he picks up jobs every now and then to cover their expenses, but it was always not enough.
"Landon, are you done? Food is ready." Larry Higgins, Landon's father called from their small kitchen.
"All good, dad. Let's eat." Landon said when he arrived at the kitchen. He's wearing a beautiful smile. It's the first day of freshmen year, anyway.
Larry and Landon Higgins are the only ones left in the family. May Higgins died of childbirth, and since then, Larry never thought of marrying another woman. He just wanted to ensure that his only son will have a shot for a better life.
He grew up in a family that belonged to the wrong side of tracks. Drug pushers, pickpockets, con artists, but Larry wanted a different kind of life. Something normal that he can be proud of. That is the reason why he disconnected himself from his family. He never even mentioned them to his son.
-------------------
"Hey guys! I missed you!"
Landon watched as the other students greeted everyone. They were all happy to se each other, but that is not the case for Landon. No one is happy to seek him, no one even bothers to greet him. But, that's okay–that's what he always told himself. Maybe, they would finally like him now.
"Hey, loser! Think fast!"
When he looked up, it was too late for him to avoid the incoming attack. It was a balloon filled with colored powder. When the balloon hit him, everybody laughed. This is his life since grade school. Being called a loser a freak, all because his father shines shoes for a living. The 'cool kids' always pick on him. They love to make fun of his old shoes, and worn out bag.
"Aw, look. He's dirty. Why don't you call your father to clean you up?"
A painful smil formed on his lips when the other students laughed so hard. Tears are already threatening to fall from his eyes, but he forced them back. He can't let them see that his weak. Good thing that the bell rang before anymore attacks from the other students progressed.
His only rest is during class. Of course, the other students can't do anything in front of their teachers. But, as soon as the bell ring again, signaling the end of their class, it's back to hell again. There are times that he doesn't want to go to school anymore, but whenever he looks at the exhausted look of his dad, he woul remember the reason why he has to.
"Congratulations, Landon. You're still at the no. 1 spot for the entire school. Your grades are perfect. Keep up the good work, okay?" Their teacher said. He smiled widely, proud of his achievements. Ever since grade schools, Landon has been an honor student. There are times that his doesn't even want to talk to him because they feel intimidated.
Almost perfect memory, high IQ, matured mind and perception in life; talking to Landon is like talking to an adult. It is one of the reason why the other students doesn't want to be friends with him. The others are envious of him, and that's why they call him freak. He is too different from the others that nobody could understand him.

"Look, Landon is being bullied again." Nancy said to Max.
The two of them watched as the other students pushed Landon Higgins. They were all laughing–enjoying how they make other people feel bad because of their actions. Nancy wanted to intervene, but her other friend, Carla, stopped.
"Where are you going? You can't be involved with that creep. They'll be picking on you too." She wanted to help, but she also knows that if she does, her high school life will be ruined.
"Look at him, Carla. I feel terrible."
The students only stopped pushing Landon Higgins around when their school janitor, Mr. Robert Swanson intervened. He threatened to drag them to the principal's officer, and it was enough to make them stop. He even helped Landon stand up, and accompany him to their next next classroom.
-------------
"You okay, kid?" Mr. Swanson asked.
"Yes, sir." Landon responded politely.
"Call me Bob. Listen, don't let them ruin your chance on a better life, okay? If they bother you, just stay away from them, alright?"
"Thank you, Bob. I'll be okay here."
Their next period is a one hour and half class, the longest one they have. It's also Landon's favorite because it's the longest time that he can avoid his bully schoolmates. He already experienced being summoned to the principal's office. Principal Larson wanted to ask him if he ever experienced any bullying from the other students, but he was afraid that they will only get mad at him, so he didn't say anything.
After their last period, Landon left their classroom as fast he could. He's like a criminal running away from the police. It hurts that no matter how good he treats others, they still see him as a freak. He tried reaching to them. Asking to join them during lunch, or wanting to play with back in grade school, nothing worked.
"Oh, hey, freak. Going home already?" Xavier and his friends blocked his way. "Come on, we need to talk."
"Xavier, I—uh—I need to go home. My mom is waiting for me."
"Then, we'll make it quick. You are going to write our notes for me, got it? And, when I ask you my copy, make sure that already provided an explanation. I'll ask you for my copy every week. Remember that, alright?"
"Yeah—yeah. I will."
"Good."
When Xavier let him go, Landon started running again. He wanted to get as far away from them as possible. It's only the first day of freshmen year in high school, but he's already in hell.
Third day of the first week; students still feels lazy because of the vacation-season residue. Classes are also going lightly so far. The coldness in the air is slowly leaving the atmosphere. Traces of snow can still be seen in some places, but the roads are mostly clear.Landon woke up earlier than usual. His first two days in high school is like walking back and forth through hell. God knows how many times he wanted to tell someone how hurt he is. Whenever he look at his father, he wanted to hug him and cry."Dad? Are you okay?" He almost run towards his father. Larry Higgins is leaning at their small dining table, while holding his head."Yeah, I'm fine, son. Sit down, food is almost ready." Landon's dad said."Here, sit down. I'll prepare our food."'Never mind' is the only thing he could say to himself. His father is already exhausted from working few jobs just make ends meet. It's been two weeks since the school year started. Things are starting to get real because of the projects and assignments that the teachers are giving their students. They met each other through a friend, and since then, they became boyfriend and girlfriend. However, they are the most hated couple in school. They always have their fun by bullying other students. The next morning, Larry Higgins will pay Sunnyville High School a visit. He knew in his heart that his son did not just fall from the stairs, and he means to uncover the truth. He can't just stand aside and let those who hurt his son get away with what they did. They may be poor, but he did his best to raise his son as a good kid. Landon never got involved in any kind of fights. He is a sweet and nice boy.As soon as he entered the gate of the school, he already witnessed how the other students are picking on the inferior ones. Those who are timid, quiet, short in height, he witnessed it all. The bullies also have the numbers, and the ones being bullied are afraid of them."Hey, what do you think you're doing kid? Can't you see that he's not happy with how you're treating him?" Larry intervened when he saw a small freshman being pushed around by a group of kids twice his size. Landon is still unconscious. Dr. Patel is doing everything he can to help him, but no one really knows when he will wake up, or if he will ever wake up. Larry comes by everyday to spend some time with his son, and the dark circles around his eyes are worsening. He barely sleeps three hours a day."Mr. Higgins, you look pale. How many hours of sleep have you had since your son got admitted?" A concerned nurse asked."I'm fine. I need to be here for my son." He responded."But, your son will not be happy if you will get sick. You have to take care of yourself too." The nurse replied."I'm okay, I promise," Larry insisted.Even though he gets dizzy from time to time, Larry can't show weakness. His son needs him, and he wanted to be there once he wakes up. Landon will wake up, he knows that. His son is a strong kid. There is no way that this will be the end of his journey. But, no matter how hard he convinces himself, the fear of losing his only son ha

Why don't people learn from their mistakes?Landon finally woke after being in a coma for almost a week. His father was happy to see his beautiful eyes again. Dr. Patel was truly relieved with the progress of his health. But, no matter how many times his father questioned him, he still chose to keep his mouth shut."Hey, buddy. How are you doing?" Officer Brickham greeted when he entered his room."Good morning, officer." Landon greeted back."It's nice to see you smiling again, kid. Are you feeling well?" Brickham asked."Yes, Officer. Thank you.""Listen, buddy. We already talked to Dr. Patel about what happened to you. We know that you were pushed, alright? We just need to know by who. Did you see who pushed you?""No." Landon said, almost whispered.
Bullying. When is it considered bullying? When you said every hurtful words to the person that you almost literally pushed him of the roof top? When you've hurt him enough that you might as well slashed his own wrist for him? Bullying, whether verbal or physical, or even cyber bullying is still bullying. It's wrong, and it's a crime against humanity.Landon Higgins finally recovered from his injuries. He came back to school with a heavy heart. For a short while, he felt peace. Spending time at home, inside his room, alone. No one can hurt him. He felt safe somehow. Now, back to reality."You really have a death wish, do you? Why don't you just drop out? No one wants you here." One of Xavier's friends said. It's the 7:45 in the morning, yet their group is already having their fun on him."Landon, my boy! I thought you're already dead. Freaks don't die easy, do they?" That's Xavier who just arrived.Sarah and Alex are watching those kids push Landon around.

Principal Merrlyn greeted Larry when he entered his office."I didn't come back on the day that I promised because I had to be there for my son. I am her now, and I want to know what have you done to find out what happened to him?" Larry said in a demanding tone."We've questioned every student, but so far, no one told us anything.
