THE BANE OF HER EXISTENCE
Maria's skin glistened under the sun as she stepped out of the airport to look for a cab. She was dressed in a turtleneck grey top and plain black jeans. Thankfully, it was a sunny day and she didn't have to worry about rain or warding off the cold. Her small black box stood beside her and her hair was packed in a bun.
"Cab," She called as soon as one passed by, and as expected it came to a halt.
"What's the address?" the cab man asked, leaning forward a little to get a good look at her. He was rather old, with worry lines on his forehead. However, he smiled warmly at her.
Maria fumbled with her purse as she struggled to bring out her phone to show him the address that Athina had texted her the previous day. She almost grumbled when the purse slipped from her hand, clumsiness had always been a thing in her life contrasting with how calm and collected she looked. As soon as she was able to get her phone out of the purse, she unlocked it and showed it to the patient driver who had on an amused smile.
Realization dawned in his eyes as he looked back at her with a newfound interest.
"Martakis eh?" He asked, eyeing her up and down with greed. Maria cowered two steps farther away from the vehicle. She kicked herself in apprehension when her brain reminded her that the Martakis was one of the wealthiest families in the city and of course many people would want to get their hands on one, probably to ask for a ransom or rob them.
While she still stared at the creepy man, her phone began to vibrate in her hands, it was Athina.
"You didn't think to place a call through to me when you arrived in Greece?" She sounded pissed.
"I was going to take a cab to your house. Isn't that how it's done?" Maria questioned with a puzzled look on her face. Her palms were claimed with sweat and the driver wouldn't go away even though she already warded him off.
"Cab?"
"Yes! A cab. Don't act dumb.”
"Why would you take a cab to the Martakis estate when I can send my driver to pick you up?" Athina sounded genuinely confused and Maria almost facepalmed. Of course, they would have a driver. How the thought of them having a driver didn't cross her mind would forever be a mystery.
"Of course. Why then did you send me the address?"
"That was for your parents honey. I know how they can be and your dad would always insist that we gave him an address of where we were going each time we wanted to go see a friend," Athina said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"I'm no longer a child Athina," Maria responded, rolling her eyes.
"Whatever, the driver will be there soon. I can't wait to see you!" Athina dropped the call after expressing her excitement and Maria sighed tiredly.
The sun was scorching now and she had to pull out a pair of shades to put on. Luckily, the driver had driven off during her conversation with Athina and she couldn't be more thankful.
A few women passed by her ogling at her back-length silver hair but Maria wasn't fazed. It was normal for people to be shocked at how different it was and in fact, a lot of people believed she dyed it.
She had gotten the hair color from her dad who she was the replica of facially. However, she didn't inherit his height and stamina.
All too soon, a black Peugeot stopped in front of where she stood which was just outside the airport. Maria shifted away from the vehicle and she checked the time, wondering why her ride hadn't come yet.
A man dressed casually approached her with his phone in hand, eyes flickering from his phone to her face before nodding in certainty.
"You must be Maria," he said calmly with his right arm outstretched. His voice was deep but welcoming and his grey eyes held no mischief.
"My ride?" Maria asked, raising an eyebrow and looking back at the expensive car.
"Ah, yes. A little introduction wouldn't hurt would it?" He asked motioning to his still outstretched arm.
Maria took his arm in a handshake and they exchanged names. Kingsley reached for the luggage and escorted her to the car.
Safe to say, the ride to the estate was a smooth one.
Maria's head was rested against the window and she ignored the glances Kingsley kept throwing at her. When they got to the mansion, Maria's eyes widened and she tried to comport herself. The house was bigger than what Athina had described, bigger than the pictures she had seen.
"Gracious Lord,” She muttered under her breath.
The walls were painted with an impressive shade of pastel and the floors were marbled. Around the house were perfectly mowed grass and a little garden stood proudly by the side. The oak door creaked open and cool air hit her with force. The air conditioning was on another level. The windows were draped with heavy cream curtains and the sitting room was designed with a burgundy theme.
A shriek tore her away from her ogling and she turned around to see Athina running at her with a bright smile.
"Maria!" She yelled right into Maria's ear before engulfing her in a warm hug. Maria hugged her back with equal excitement and they giggled in each other's arms like school girls.
Athina was glowing an ethereal beauty, her Amber eyes, the only thing they shared in common accentuated her slightly bronzed skin. Her hips and breasts looked fuller than usual and Maria had to step back to take a good look at her best friend.
"Married life does look good on you Athina,” Maria exclaimed.
"It would look great on you too! Now come in and eat something.” Athina pulled her into the house and to the sitting room.
"Mom sent her home-cooked pie. She misses you so much,” Maria announced as she rummaged through her luggage to bring out the neatly wrapped pie.
"She's the best!" Athina snatched the pie from her hands and hastily unwrapped it.
"Always a good mother,” Maria chuckled.

Maria watched Athina make exaggerated hand gestures as she narrated her experience in the Martakis family and how her relationship with Colton had been going smoothly. Maria was so happy for her, she could see the joy radiating on Athina's face.
"You changed your skincare routine?" She finally asked as soon as the thought crossed her mind.
"No I didn't it's just-" Athina paused and looked away
"Just what?" Maria screeched catching on to the fact that her best friend was keeping a secret. "Just what Athina?" She sat up, prodding further, her hands reaching to tickle Athina till she let the cat out of the bag.
Just then, two male voices bickering noisily reached her ears and her eyes snapped to the door.
"Oh, would you look at that! My husband is back,"
Athina rejoiced and Maria caught a slight undertone of relief lacing her words. She narrowed her eyes at her best friend mentally noting to ask Athina what that was about. She didn't like the feeling that her best friend was keeping secrets from her.
Maria watched as Athina gave Colton, who was yet to notice her, a kiss on the lips and a cute hug. She whispered something in his errand his attention shifted to her. His deep blue eyes were interesting as usual and his dimpled smile was adorable. One of the factors that had intrigued Athina in the first place was his smile and kindness. He welcomed Maria with a mischievous smile and asked her how her journey was.
Maria and Colton were not so close but they bonded a little over the period Colton was trying to woo Athina. It was an interesting thing to experience. Just as they began catching up, a ping sound made them notice the other man in the room. Maria's breath caught in her throat and she swallowed. Maria shot Athina a panicked look, nobody had told her he would be here.
His eyes were glued to his phone and his eyebrows furrowed like he was having a heated chat with someone. He stood at a proud 6'2 and his cologne washed over her like a smooth breeze.
She seemed to fade into the background as she stared at him not paying heed to the conversation Colton and Athina were having in front of her. His gaze lazily shifted from his phone and landed squarely on her. His grey eyes held an unimpressed look and she couldn't help but mirror his expression remembering why exactly she didn't like him.
A scowl covered her features and they had a little staring contest of sorts.
"Hey, Reid. Didn't know you were coming over today," Athina said, breaking the staring contest he and Maria were having.
As soon as he turned to her, a wide smile was plastered on his face and the side of his eyes crinkled. Maria begrudgingly noted that he looked better smiling. She rolled her eyes at her thoughts.
“It’s the start of football season and you know how I and Colton are at that time.” His voice was softer than usual.
"Besides, I figured you’d need help with teasing this big head,” he added pointing at Colton, who grumbled at his words making Athina laugh.
"Hey, remember Maria yeah?" Athina pulled Maria to stand beside her.
"Your maid of honor, yes I do,” Reid replied, his gaze didn't flicker to her even once and it irked Maria to no end.
"She's going to stay for a while here. At least I have a partner now,” Athina smiled contentedly.
"Welcome," Reid curtly replied.
“We’ll head over to the game room now, see you in an hour babe,” Colton said and pecked Athina on the cheek.
“Okay, I’ll get started with dinner and have someone bring you guys snacks and drinks.”
Colton thanked her and told Maria to feel at home before he left.
“You’re the best,” Reid said to Athina and kissed her on the cheek too before following Colton up the stairs.
Reid did not acknowledge her and she knew it would be an annoying experience to have him around.
TAKEOVER STRATEGYReid didn’t have many friends growing up with the strict parenting he had and it stuck with him. The only person he could call a friend was Colton and gone were those days they spent their free time together visiting various bars and clubs. His mother being absent was one of the main reasons his father was hard on him. The iron fist training he had as a child molded him into the man he had become. For a child, he was too busy to make friends or hang out with his friends. He was either dealing with academics, athletics, or art. Mr. Martakis believed in versatility and gave his son the option to do whatever he wanted as long as he was the best at it. Fortunately, his son followed in his path.Colton who was like his brother and only friend had become such a bore that getting him to tag along to the club was a struggle. He was either running home to meet his wife or choosing to stay home.Reid thought of how nice it must be to have someone waiting at home. Someone wai
BUSINESS PROPOSAL"So, you guys are pretty chummy with Reid" Maria chuckled nervously as soon as she and Athina stepped into the kitchen. She felt like her chest was loosened and her breaths came out better. That male had a way of sucking up all the air in the room."What do you mean?" Athina guffawed, bending forward to rest her hands on her knees at how hard she laughed. "He's my inlaw Minnie, of course we're chummy with him. But you wouldn't mind though, would you" Athina straightened and narrowed her eyes mischievously at her best friend. Maria's cheeks heat up and she glanced away."Of course. It's none of my business" Maria bit out silently plotting how to repay Athina."There's absolutely nothing between you guys, is there?" Athina asked further, cocking an eyebrow at Maria. There was never a time when teasing Maria wasn't fun, she just made it so easy."Nothing but irritation. In fact! I'm repulsed by that proud inlaw of yours. Now please, let's just make something to eat, I'm
SEALED DEALHell be damned if Maria didn't slap this man in front of her. So it was a bright Monday morning and she had taken the necessary documents to Reid's office so they could finalise the deal and sign some papers. She had woken up in a good mood today, finally deciding to look on the bright side and get over her problem with Reid. She would still get him back of course, but not now, her time would come. She was dressed in a sleeveless burgundy top and black palazzo leather pants that brought out her hips more than she liked but Athina encouraged her that she looked "breathtakingly sexy" and she believed her hundred percent. Athina would not let her step out if the house looking anything short of perfectioni. However, as she arrived at the twenty storey building that had 'Martakis' printed boldly in front of it, her jaw dropped. Reid owned this place?Maria got into the elevator to go to the last floor and a man dressed smartly in a black suit stepped in after her. She almost r
PARTNERSReid could not believe Maria had accepted his offer without too much protest. He expected her to at least demand something else other than the profit percentage they had agreed on. Deep down, he should be feeling lucky but felt bad at how he had cheated Maria. He was so sure she’d never forgive him once she found out about all his terms and conditions. The scowl that she always had on her face when talking to him was sure going to worsen. He wouldn’t be surprised if he got murdered in his sleep or worse, get thrown off a cliff. Knowing the fact that it would be teamwork (Athina and Maria), there’d be no chance of him surviving. The joy Reid felt as he finally got what he’d been dreaming of was un unexplainable. Things were finally set in place to fulfill his mother’s dream. He took his time flipping through the pages of her recipe book, commiserating the tone used in the explanation like she was right beside him and speaking to him. Reid had long gone found the perfect chef t
DEVIL'S ADVOCATEMaria paced to and fro, hand on chin, face set in a tight frown. She couldn't shake the feeling that Reid stood a chance to gain more from the deal and at the same time, she couldn't back out because as much as she hated to admit it, it was a good way to expand the business and make high profits. Maybe leaving Clara in charge of the head branch wouldn't be so bad too, considering she basically knew Clara's family ties and other personal information. Plus, they were considerably close friends. However, that meant she would have to stay with Athina for a while. Her lack of clothes were an issue since she only packed enough for two weeks but thankfully, her mother had decided to come visit Athina and along with her, bring the rest of her accessories. She had just explained to both her parents what had been going on with the business the night before. It was through face time, she could see her mother's smile crack with uncertainty and her father looked down sadly, no dou
ROCK GIRLIt was a quiet ride for the first 20 minutes as they both kept to themselves and enjoyed the uncomfortable silence. Reid considered starting the conversation but decided not to since Maria hadn’t been particularly warm towards him. Turning on the radio seemed to be the solution to ease the tension in the car.Imagine Dragons “Believer,” a heavy base resonated within the car and Reid caught a glimpse of Maria, who was staring out the window, nodding and humming to the song.Reid smirked and said, “I didn’t peg you to be a rock kind of girl.”He judged according to the kind of music Athina tortured him with the first and last time they took a road trip to his uncle's cabin upstate. It was all pop and heartbreak songs that made him groan all through the ride and made him regret not driving himself. He assumed those were the kind of songs someone like Maria would like, or perhaps a touch of hip hop or whatever trended these days. She shook her head. “How stereotypical,” She murm
EMBARRASSING MOMENTS OF MARIA'Maria Papantoniou, you've really done it this time' Maria muttered under her breath. Her eyes stayed glued to the ground as she fiddled with her fingers. This definitely topped the list of the most embarrassing things that had ever happened to her in her lifetime of 24 years. She had never wished to be hauled out of existence more desperately than she wished now. They had both heard it, the ripping of her gown right when she bent down to pick up her purse. So maybe wearing a fitted gown wasn't exactly the best idea. The gown ripped vertically, right where her natal cleft was and no doubt, her pink panties were probably showcasing themselves proudly since the color was a contrast to the silvery-white gown. She hoped Reid didn’t notice but unfortunately, he did. If the questioning look he gave her when the sound of her dress ripping wasn't enough proof then his goofy stare definitely was. She couldn't stand it. She couldn't even move a step, literally as t
THE ART OF FIRST DATEAfter much thought, Athina had decided it was better for Maria to dress lightly, in a sundress and black summer boots. After Maria and Reid had gotten back that evening, Kyros called, asking if it was okay to reschedule the date the following day. Of course, Maria was overjoyed and jumped at the offer, thankful that Kyros was in fact willing to still meet up with her over coffee. She put on light make up, courtesy of Athina. Before Kyros had come to pick her up for their little date, Reid had stopped by that morning. She was just coming down the stairs when she saw Reid talking to Athina who was describing something to him by the looks of it since she kept making wild hand gestures. Reid's eye lit up a little when he saw her but slightly dimmed when he took in her appearance. Or maybe it was just her imagination."Oh Minnie here is getting a lot of attention from the males" Athina jumped to explain proudly when she noticed Reid's questioning look at Maria being

TOGETHER REGARDLESSReid could see through her. He saw the anger, the hatred and the confusion, all emitting through her eyes. The news he had just gotten broke his heart but he doesn't want to believe it was true. He was just going to treat it as words from an angry lady who needs in-depth explanation and love. He stared into her eyes with all the emotions his body was willing to profess. Living without her for the past year had made him realize how deep he was into her and how he couldn't do without her. Those days during the year were a living hell for him. He couldn't get his life together without a day passing when her thought would cross his mind. He hated life and how nothing ever goes his way. He deserted everyone and his work. Liquor became his friend and he gets drunk every single day. His dad had neglected him to be a worthless son who has nothing to offer. His dad wanted him to get married so he could gracefully pass the inheritance all over to him but he had proved to
LOST HATREDIt had been a year since the whole incident happened. Maria left her whole life behind including Reid and her friends. She was broken and saw no reason to live and now she had become a shadow of herself. She had travelled back home to her family without caring about anything or anyone since she has nothing left to lose. Maria laid on her bed with her door locked just like always. She had her head buried in her pillow, soaked in her tears with a high temperature. Her room was dark just like a vampire's room that was avoiding sunlight. She had always lived like this after she had visited a therapist and there had been no difference in her case. She was still always gloomy and the whole thing she passed through still played in her head like it was yesterday. She goes out of her room on good days when she feels light-headed and a little bit into the world. On these days, her mum and her siblings take the best of it by making sure that she feels good and less burdened and
EXCRUCIATING PAIN “What?” Maria exclaimed before she could stop herself. She had heard a lot but this new revelation was unbelievable and shocking. Reid's father has an illegitimate son? And that son is Kyros? Which makes Reid and Kyros brothers? She found it so hard to believe his words and she doesn't even know who to believe anymore since all everyone around her does was to lie. She thought of how she had trusted everyone and given them her all by loving them unconditionally but all she got from them was lies and deceit. The fact that Kyros had only used her for his advantage made the tears roll down her cheeks effortlessly. Kyros laughed before he continued. He was having fun, he was enjoying the way he was torturing her. “This is why you came into the picture. After I discovered that Reid was the heir and the whole inheritance was going to him, it seems unfair to me, don’t you think? The fact that I was illegitimate doesn't mean I'm not entitled or that I don't have the Mart
THE REVELATION Reid zoomed in, pulling up outside the building. He rushed down from his car and hurried in but as he got in, he saw no sight of Maria. "Maria," he called out and his voice echoed throughout the empty room but he got no response from her. "Maria," he called again, a little louder this time and his voice gave the same effect it had given the first time. He brought out his phone from his pocket to dial her number as he walked outside with his hand rested on his waist. He could hear her phone ring, only then did he realize that her phone was ringing on the floor close to where he was standing. He ended the call and walked closer to where the phone was ringing only to find out that all her stuff was on the ground. He looks troubled as to why she had her things scattered on the ground. "Maria!" he called out audibly, looking around but he got no response. He stood quiet for a while to think and the possibility of her being in trouble dawned on him. He raised his han
THE KIDNAPPINGThis was the last time she was doing the on and off with him. Maria had made up her mind and at that point, there seems to be nothing that could change her thoughts. It had been a month of silent struggle and endless sickness plus in-depth exhaustion. She had shut herself out from everyone and had decided to live through her pregnancy days without letting anyone into her life. She had stopped with the tears and endlessly thought. She had replaced all of Reid's thoughts that she had on her mind with that of her growing child. She laid on the sofa with the duvet pulled up to her chest and her face and breath were filled with exhaustion. She rubbed her growing belly and was trying to decipher the fact that she was pregnant. She was damn pregnant for a man she would never forgive. She hated how things had ended up with her and she couldn't help the tears that were gushing out from her eyes now. Was this a blessing or not? How could she bring her innocent child to this
NEW BLESSING OR NOTHe stared at her for a long time without blinking and when he later did, tears rolled down his cheeks. He’d tried his best. He had said words that he could think of, words that he thought were going to change her mind but ended up not making any difference. He couldn’t dispute the fact that her words were true and he could see how she had poured out her heart in her words. He hated himself right now. “We could still try to work things out!” he said in a low tone. He was desperate and helpless. He needed her so bad, that he doesn't think he could live another day knowing she hadn’t forgiven him. He waited for her to say something, anything. Just something capable enough to serve a salve on his injured heart. He wanted to listen to anything words from her still, he could see the exhaustion on her face. He doesn't want to stress a thing but he was a desperate man and his heart ached for her. “We could work things out, Maria. Don't give up on me,” he moved closer
INDEPTH THOUGHTS Since Maria had been living in her apartment, she had never seen a lot of people around which was odd to see them now. The whole building was usually quiet and not for once had she run into tons of people as she had now, stuck in the elevator with unfamiliar faces. The elevator was quiet even though there were a lot of people. They seem to be so interested in their businesses that they don't wanna mind anyone's. She stopped on her floor and walked straight to her apartment. She was a bit tired from all the stress she had to go through to set up the new restaurant which was a lot to do. Reid had excused himself to see Amanda the last time they were together and it had been two weeks now since they had seen. She hated the fact that she was acting fine and cool with the idea of having a family and she had to act as the mistress who has no effect on in his life. She had been feeling a little dizzy lately and being exhausted had been something that occurs to her fro
STORM AND SILENCE"I got the restaurant back!" Reid yelled delightfully and Maria stared at him in utmost awe. "What? How? How did you get it back? I thought it was...""Yes! Obviously. It was burnt to ashes but I got us a better one!" he retorted with a broad smile. "Hold on. Make me understand you, please," Maria said in a low tone. "All I'm saying is that we got the first building to ashes which was a great blow on us, so I got us a better and different building and here are the documents!" he handed her the documents with a gladdened heart as he stared at her face while her hands opened the brown envelope. He was proud of himself on how he could make her smile again. It felt like ages since he had seen her smile genuinely. "You did what?" Maria said, amazed as she opened the documents and scanned through the papers. Her smile widened as she read through the lines. "Oh my goodness!" she exclaimed as she jumped on him and wrapped her arms around his neck. This was great news
