Serena was closing her locker after fetching the book she needed for the next class when a masculine voice resonated. She turned to find Oliver- one of the hot studs of her school.
“Hey,” he approached, flashing his charming smile. Serena smiled back, already having a hunch as to why he was there.
“How are you and…..where is your bestie?” his eyes keenly searched around. Serena already knew he didn’t care about her well-being, he just wanted to know where Shanice was.
“She is in a meeting with the principal,” so she gave him the answer he was looking for, politely so. Oliver was hitting on Shanice for a long time. However, Shanice wasn’t interested in him.
The boy rubbed the back of his neck- a nervous tic. He then reached inside his back pocket and fished out a note.
“Umm….can you like give it to her?” he asked. Serena sighed inwardly. His twentieth love note this month. She pitied the boy. He was good-looking but he wasn’t the only one vying for Shanice’s attention. Shanice was the Goddess of Central High. The prima donna. Boys flocked her everywhere she went in the hope of getting one glance from her.
Shanice, however, wasn’t just a pretty face. She was smart, kind, competitive, and the first female president of their college student council. The woman was as flawless as a diamond.
Like always, Serena took the note, maintaining her smile. Boys often reached out to her to get to her bestie. She was like her manager.
“You are awesome,” Oliver chirped before giving her a mock salute and sprinting off to God knows where.
Serena glanced down at the note and heaved another sigh.
…
Serena found Shanice in their usual spot in the canteen and made her way toward their table. Like always, Shanice had everyone’s attention without even trying. Serena noticed guys from other tables checking her out now and then. With rose-gold hair, hazel eyes, and remarkable features to match, she was an attention magnet. However, Shanice’s entire focus was on her phone. It seemed she was reading something.
“Reed?” Serena guessed and slumped down in the chair across from her. Shanice smiled in confirmation. Reed and Shanice were in an on-and-off relationship for long. She didn’t know what was the real deal between them. They liked each other but never stuck together for long. Reed’s parents were one of the richest families in their town. They owned their school. For obvious reasons, Reed was given a lot of leeway. He would barely attend school, always out world touring. Serena believed they made the perfect couple, considering Reed was a stunner himself.
Serena slid the note towards Shanice. Her bestie glanced down at the note before giving her a confused look.
“ What is it?” she asked.
“Open up,” Serena nodded towards the note. Shanice took the note and opened it.
Her eyes glided over the words. With a neutral face, she folded the paper and put it back on the table.
Serena sent a knowing smile her way.
“So what’s your response?” she teased. Shanice sighed.
“You know it already, I am not interested in him,” she answered dryly.
"He is cute though," Serena shrugged.
"And crazy too if he thinks he can get me by writing these horribly spelled letters. Tell him to chase girls of his status. I don't date storekeepers," Shanice shot back. Serena was taken aback by her rude reply and the haughty tone her voice had adopted.
"He is not a storekeeper, his father is. And how does that even matter?" Serena asked, genuinely confused. Shanice quickly realised her mistake.
"You know I didn't mean it that way. It's just the principal is stressing me out and then him. Of course, no work is big or small but he really should stop acting so desperate," she explained in her honey-coated voice. Serena was too naive to doubt her.
"I am just so tired of being chased by boys all the time. Their non-stop compliments irritate me now. No matter how much I shut them off they just don't take the damn hint. Trust me, you are so lucky you don't have to face this, Rena. I wish we could switch our bodies like they do in the movies. Maybe then I will have some peace," Shanice sighed as though exhausted.
Serena flashed her an awkward smile not sure how to take her statement. It didn't sound right, in fact, a little humiliating but she brushed it off, certain Shanice meant well.
“So how did the meeting go?” Serena questioned, curious.
“The principal has agreed to expand students’ parking space. He was adamant but you know me I don’t stop until I get what I want,” Shanice winked at Serena. The statement was true. Shanice competitive side was scary. She was an absolute monster. But other than that, she was a sweet girl. Very down to the earth and understanding as a friend. Serena and Shanice were bff since middle school. Before befriending Shanice, Serena was constantly bullied. But it all ended when one day Shanice came to her rescue and chased off her bullies. Since then they became inseparable.
“Hey,” Serena turned her face to see Adam coming their way, his eyes set on Shanice.
“For you. I heard you have a thing for Oreo shake,” Adam leaned over their table and bored his admiring gaze into Shanice, totally ignoring Serena. Adam was a popular jock. Shanice glanced briefly at the shake before bringing her attention back to him. She smirked.
“Is it free or Will I have to pay for it?” Shanice flirted. Shanice and Adam were fuck buddies.
“You can pay me tonight. I’ll bring chocolate,” he winked at her. She smiled in response.
Serena watched them, used to their explicit conversation by now. Adam was another Shanice die-heart fan. Adam left shortly after setting their night date.
The bell rang.
“I’ll see you in Maths,” Serena got up from her seat to go to her class. Shanice gave her a nod and they both parted to get to their respective classes.
.........
“Have you done the homework?” Serena asked Ayleen.
“What homework?” Ayleen asked, genuinely confused. Serena gave her a “you can’t be serious look.” Ayleen was completely unbothered.
“The homework that Mr. Assman gave us yesterday,” Serena reminded her. Ayleen rolled her eyes.
“You have done it?” Ayleen shot back at her. Serena nodded. She was a goody two shoes. She didn’t have a choice though. She was tired of being passed around in the name of foster care. She wanted to be a doctor and have a stable life.
“Show me. I’ll just copy,” Ayleen shrugged. Serena rolled her eyes but passed her copy to Ayleen.
“Do you know the principal has finally decided to expand the parking space,” Serena told Ayleen. Ayleen was like a lone wolf. A tomboy with a resting bitch face. She rides a motorcycle to school and wouldn't run it over people if they tried to bother her. For obvious reasons, she doesn’t have many friends. In fact, her list of friends starts and ends with Serena.
“How so?” Ayleen asked without moving her eyes up from the copy she was writing in.
“Shanice told me. She persuaded him,” Serena explained.
“How? By fucking him?” Ayleen spat. The girl never liked Shanice from the beginning. Serena couldn’t understand why.
“I don’t get it. What is your problem with her? Why do you keep making snide remarks about her?” Serena argued, not liking this offending remark about her best friend. Ayleen looked up from her copy to Serena. Ayleen wouldn’t deny that she was jealous of their friendship. Serena was the best best friend one could have. But her judgment of Shanice didn’t stem from that. Serena was too naive to look beyond Shanice's facade. Shanice was nice and sweet only because she was the “jewel in the crown.” She has a wealthy background, supportive friends, attention, and striking beauty- everything that a person could dream of. She was confident and assured that she was unbeatable. And she wasn’t some bimbo, she was smart enough to know how to have people keep liking her. Ayleen had caught the superior look in her eyes several times she tried acting modest. She believed she was above everyone and that’s where her supposed sweetness came from. She is agreeable because there is no one to contest her. Her true nature will come out when someone threatens her reign.
“Because she is a pretending bitch,” Ayleen summed up in one line. She knew Serena wouldn’t believe her so she didn’t bother to explain.
“You don’t know her,” Serena countered, annoyed.
“You value her a lot. I truly hope you don’t regret it in the future,” Ayleen replied sincerely. Serena was too innocent to see how Shanice was undermining her. Her loyalty to Shanice was admirable, but Ayleen knew it was going to hurt her really bad someday. Some day she will regret befriending Shanice.
After a tiring shift at the clinic, she returned to her empty house. It was a studio apartment with couple furnitures around. She had rented the worn-out apartment from an old lady. Serena knew nothing about her parents except that a woman had left her at the orphanage's door, probably her mother. She was clearly unwanted. Since then Serena was passed around from one foster care to another. Her last foster family was the worst. They were druggies and adopted her only to pull cash from the government. She got a job when fifteen and started saving. Once she had saved enough, she escaped. Shanice’s father who was a hot-shot lawyer, stepped in and made sure her foster family didn’t trouble her again. Shanice and her family insisted that she stay with them, but Serena refused. They already had done a lot for her, she didn’t want to burden them anymore. Plus she had to learn to be on her own. Sighing, Serena dropped her bag on the chair and headed straight to her room. There was a foldi
“Let her go,” the boy repeated assertively, showing no sign of fear. Serena wasn’t able to comprehend how this boy was not afraid of Xander’s intimidating appearance. Xander actually listened and released Serena to make his way toward the boy who just had dared to threaten him. Blood drained down Serena’s face as Xander’s intention became clear with each stride. He was going to hurt him. But before she could say anything, both the boys were already in each other’s faces, staring one other down. Their unyielding confrontation sent tension crackling in the air. Serena swallowed, expecting worse. “Do we have a problem?” Xavier ground out, not happy with the interruption. “You tell me,” the boy held his head high and chin up. Not intimidated at all. He wasn’t being cocky, just fearless which Serena wasn’t sure if it was a good thing. He might be taller than Xavier, but Xavier was definitely more muscular than him. “You are trying to get a beating, ain’t you, Four eyes?” Xavier too
Once the class was over, she grabbed her bag and hurried her way to the canteen. He was already in there, looking for her. She reached over and tapped his upper arm as she couldn't reach his shoulder. He turned around and those jade-green eyes stole her breath all over again. “I was looking for you,” he told her, inducing another flutter through her heart. She smiled and dropped her gaze to the ground, hoping her blush wasn't visible. “How was your class?” she asked and led him towards the counter.“Good, I guess,” he lifted his one shoulder in a half-shrug. Serena found the act cute. The boy got her tray from the counter and handed her before taking his own. She murmured a thank you and led him to her usual spot. Serena couldn’t help but steal glances at him as he sat across from her, completely unaware of her growing infatuation with him. The more she looked at him, the more she felt attracted to him. He was surrounded by an air of mystery and intrigue. Something dangerous.
Days passed by, Serena noticed Asher had made some friends of which Chad seemed to be his closest. Chad was one of the basket players- popular but not conceited like the other players. Serena and Chad had never really talked as they moved in different circles, but she knew he was a decent guy. Asher had picked a good friend. “Hey,” a familiar voice interrupted her thoughts. She raised her gaze and a smile of its own bloomed across her face when she found those captivating eyes looking at her. “Hey,” she replied a little shyly. Smiling, he took a seat beside her. His scent wafted through her nostrils, throwing her senses into a delirium. He didn’t smell like expensive colognes, but like soap and fabric softener, and she loved it. She wanted to sniff him and overflow her lungs with his scent. “How are you?” she asked, genuinely curious. She found herself wanting to know more and more about him. “Good. And you?” he asked, looking to be in a good mood. She did not know why the lif
Shanice pulled in and slid on her Ray ban.“Is this the place?” Shanice questioned, scanning their surrounding. “Yup. According to the map,” Serena replied. Shanice opened her door and Serena followed suit. During their discussion, Asher had told her that his part-time job was to assist people riding water flyboards. The revelation had obviously thrilled Serena. She had never ridden a fly board before. When Asher found out, he invited her over for a ride. Serena had shared this with Shanice and Shanice expressed her will to accompany as she also had never ridden a flyboard. Serena was overjoyed. They walked a few feet and finally the lake came into their view. Serena spotted Asher who was helping the rider get off the board. “Asher,” she shouted and waved to him after she had her attention. Serena looked into those eyes and the world stopped moving for her for a second. He wasn’t wearing his glasses today. He smiled at her before shifting his gaze to Shanice. Shanice took off her
Serena was so happy. The whole weekend she had been reminiscing the moments they had together. She had never imagined flyboarding would be such a thrilling experience. This weekend felt as long as a decade. Humming a tune to herself, she emptied her milk carton into the small bowl she had set outside her apartment for cats before skipping her way toward the bus stand. “Serena,” she smiled involuntarily when his deep voice hit her ears. Turning around, she found him coming towards her. Her heart swooned at his sight. He was looking nothing different- same thick glasses, loose clothes but still, he managed to send a nervous flutter through her poor heart. To her dismay though, he had put on his glasses. How she wished he hadn’t. She wanted to see his eyes without any barrier. “How was your weekend?” he asked as he came to a halt in front of her. Serena was not really an introvert girl but for some weird reason, her mind would shut down every time he asked her anything. She just fel
The sun was pouring in through the window in heavy stream, keeping the room bright. Serena wasn’t able to focus on the lesson today, her eyes kept darting towards the door. The class was on for twenty minutes and he still had not come. Is he on leave today? Why though? He wasn’t the type to miss classes on a whim. Concern stirred within her. Is he okay? She promptly took out her phone and opened the messaging app. She typed him a message asking about his well-being. She pressed the send button and just then the wooden door creaked open. Her head snapped up towards it along with others. Her eyes flared out slightly when she saw him standing at the doorway. An unconscious smile crossed her lips. But then she frowned when she noticed he was wearing a hoodie on this scorching day. His head was downcast, hiding his face. The teacher asked him his reason for coming late and he responded with a vague answer. Thankfully, the teacher allowed him in with a warning as he was one of the brighte
Serena was intrigued now. She wanted to see underground fighting. She had been researching it since he told her about it and she couldn’t help but be both thrilled and nervous about it. She had casually asked him if they had different names like fighters do. He told her that they do but didn’t disclose his name. She was smart enough to pick up all the clues he dropped inadvertently. With their help, she looked it up on the internet. She was amazed to know such illegal groups even had websites. How come cyber people are not taking heed of them. Looks like there was only one underground boxing group in their city. The time was 11 PM to 5 AM. She knew it could be dangerous. She was aware of all the risks involved. It was an illegal place which meant no guards. And still, she couldn’t shake off her curiosity. She wanted to see how such places work. She had always been a good girl playing by the book but once she wanted to do something wild. And her propeller was Asher. She wanted to see
