After a tiring shift at the clinic, she returned to her empty house. It was a studio apartment with couple furnitures around. She had rented the worn-out apartment from an old lady. Serena knew nothing about her parents except that a woman had left her at the orphanage's door, probably her mother. She was clearly unwanted. Since then Serena was passed around from one foster care to another. Her last foster family was the worst. They were druggies and adopted her only to pull cash from the government. She got a job when fifteen and started saving. Once she had saved enough, she escaped. Shanice’s father who was a hot-shot lawyer, stepped in and made sure her foster family didn’t trouble her again. Shanice and her family insisted that she stay with them, but Serena refused. They already had done a lot for her, she didn’t want to burden them anymore. Plus she had to learn to be on her own.
Sighing, Serena dropped her bag on the chair and headed straight to her room. There was a folding bed in the center and a table on the side with a growing snake plant on it. She wanted to snuggle into her bed really bad, but before that, she had to freshen up. She hit the bathroom and showered. After cleaning up, she went to the kitchen to make her sandwich for dinner. She could cook a meal but the day had drained her energy like always. She didn't remember when was the last time she had a nice meal. Maybe at Shanice place.
After sating her hunger, she hopped onto her bed. As a routine, she grabbed her novel from the table, parted the book to where she had left off last night, and began reading.
She loved reading romance novels. The MLs in these books are so different than the real-life men. The love they show feels so pure. She wondered if she would ever get to experience that kind of love. The thought caused her feeling giddy. She wants her man to be possessive, a little bit obsessive, and hella romantic. Someone who will kiss the ground she walks on. Someone who will choose her and only her every time. She will be his first choice.
It’s not that she never had a relationship. She had a couple relationships before but they all ended tragically. It turned out both the boys were using her to get closer to Shanice. If Shanice hadn’t shown her the pathetic messages they sent her, she would have never found out.
Even though she wanted to, she had no hopes of getting her dream man. She wasn’t as pretty as the FLs of these novels. Shanice checked off all the qualities of an FL though.
She had barely finished a page when sleep snuck up on her and she decided to call it a day. Setting the book back on the table, she slid under her comforter, turned off the light, and slept, hugging her pillow close.
………..
Serena got down from the bus and made her way towards the school. She was donning a loose simple shirt and a pair of washed-out jeans. She preferred her wavy hair braided and had a weird obsession with flavored lip balms. Keeping her head down, she walked in through the main gate.
She was crossing the parking space, minding her own business when some roaring motorcycles blocked her path. She paused and raised her gaze to Xander and his buddies- the biggest bullies in her school. They were the only ones who owned this ride. Serena felt a sinking feeling in her stomach as they started circling her like predators on their respective bikes. Their pierced brows and buzz-cut hair added to their delinquent persona. Serena couldn’t understand what Shanice even saw in Xander. He was all muscles and no brain. The girl licked her lips in nervousness, waiting for them to leave. Just then a hand shot out and yanked her bag off her back, causing her to lose her footing. Serena shrieked in horror but with a quick reflex, she managed to catch herself from tripping. The boys passed her bag around, laughing and hooting.
“Give me my bag,” Serena collected herself and put up a brave front. There were a few other students in the lot but she knew better than to expect help from them.
Xander jumped down his motorcycle, grabbed the bag from his friend, and approached her with a wicked glint in his eyes. Sarena watched him coming closer and it did nothing to allay her anxiety. As she had suspected, he zipped open her bag and turned it upside down, causing the content to drop on the floor. She watched shell shocked.
Xander let the bag drop from his hand and stalked up to her. He smirked making her blood crawl.
“That bitch thinks she can throw me like a used tissue. Tell her it’s not that easy to blow me off,” Xander spat resentfully. This wasn’t the first time when Serena was threatened by Shanice’ exes. It had become some sort of routine by now. They would exert their anger on her as they didn’t have enough balls to confront Shanice. Serena was an easy target.
Serena willed her tears to not drip down her eyes as she stood there like a statue. She was tired of being targeted by Shanice’ jilted lovers and Xander by far was the worst. He was a total asshole and what made it worse was the fact that Serena wasn’t confrontational.
Emboldened by her timid disposition, Xander grabbed her collar in a very harsh manner.
“You better tell her to pick my damn call or the consequences will be worse than this,” he spat in her face, scaring her to her core.
“Am.I.clear?” he roared, causing her to flinch.
“You better let her go,” a masculine, fearless voice answered in her stead. The interruption took aback everyone, including Serena. Curious, they all glanced over in the direction the voice came from. An unfamiliar boy was standing a few feet away from them, unafraid. The bespectacled stranger- undaunted by Xander's intimidating appearance- met his gaze in a defiant showdown. Serena wondered with her heart in her mouth if the boy had a death wish.
“Let her go,” the boy repeated assertively, showing no sign of fear. Serena wasn’t able to comprehend how this boy was not afraid of Xander’s intimidating appearance. Xander actually listened and released Serena to make his way toward the boy who just had dared to threaten him. Blood drained down Serena’s face as Xander’s intention became clear with each stride. He was going to hurt him. But before she could say anything, both the boys were already in each other’s faces, staring one other down. Their unyielding confrontation sent tension crackling in the air. Serena swallowed, expecting worse. “Do we have a problem?” Xavier ground out, not happy with the interruption. “You tell me,” the boy held his head high and chin up. Not intimidated at all. He wasn’t being cocky, just fearless which Serena wasn’t sure if it was a good thing. He might be taller than Xavier, but Xavier was definitely more muscular than him. “You are trying to get a beating, ain’t you, Four eyes?” Xavier too
Once the class was over, she grabbed her bag and hurried her way to the canteen. He was already in there, looking for her. She reached over and tapped his upper arm as she couldn't reach his shoulder. He turned around and those jade-green eyes stole her breath all over again. “I was looking for you,” he told her, inducing another flutter through her heart. She smiled and dropped her gaze to the ground, hoping her blush wasn't visible. “How was your class?” she asked and led him towards the counter.“Good, I guess,” he lifted his one shoulder in a half-shrug. Serena found the act cute. The boy got her tray from the counter and handed her before taking his own. She murmured a thank you and led him to her usual spot. Serena couldn’t help but steal glances at him as he sat across from her, completely unaware of her growing infatuation with him. The more she looked at him, the more she felt attracted to him. He was surrounded by an air of mystery and intrigue. Something dangerous.
Days passed by, Serena noticed Asher had made some friends of which Chad seemed to be his closest. Chad was one of the basket players- popular but not conceited like the other players. Serena and Chad had never really talked as they moved in different circles, but she knew he was a decent guy. Asher had picked a good friend. “Hey,” a familiar voice interrupted her thoughts. She raised her gaze and a smile of its own bloomed across her face when she found those captivating eyes looking at her. “Hey,” she replied a little shyly. Smiling, he took a seat beside her. His scent wafted through her nostrils, throwing her senses into a delirium. He didn’t smell like expensive colognes, but like soap and fabric softener, and she loved it. She wanted to sniff him and overflow her lungs with his scent. “How are you?” she asked, genuinely curious. She found herself wanting to know more and more about him. “Good. And you?” he asked, looking to be in a good mood. She did not know why the lif
Shanice pulled in and slid on her Ray ban.“Is this the place?” Shanice questioned, scanning their surrounding. “Yup. According to the map,” Serena replied. Shanice opened her door and Serena followed suit. During their discussion, Asher had told her that his part-time job was to assist people riding water flyboards. The revelation had obviously thrilled Serena. She had never ridden a fly board before. When Asher found out, he invited her over for a ride. Serena had shared this with Shanice and Shanice expressed her will to accompany as she also had never ridden a flyboard. Serena was overjoyed. They walked a few feet and finally the lake came into their view. Serena spotted Asher who was helping the rider get off the board. “Asher,” she shouted and waved to him after she had her attention. Serena looked into those eyes and the world stopped moving for her for a second. He wasn’t wearing his glasses today. He smiled at her before shifting his gaze to Shanice. Shanice took off her
Serena was so happy. The whole weekend she had been reminiscing the moments they had together. She had never imagined flyboarding would be such a thrilling experience. This weekend felt as long as a decade. Humming a tune to herself, she emptied her milk carton into the small bowl she had set outside her apartment for cats before skipping her way toward the bus stand. “Serena,” she smiled involuntarily when his deep voice hit her ears. Turning around, she found him coming towards her. Her heart swooned at his sight. He was looking nothing different- same thick glasses, loose clothes but still, he managed to send a nervous flutter through her poor heart. To her dismay though, he had put on his glasses. How she wished he hadn’t. She wanted to see his eyes without any barrier. “How was your weekend?” he asked as he came to a halt in front of her. Serena was not really an introvert girl but for some weird reason, her mind would shut down every time he asked her anything. She just fel
The sun was pouring in through the window in heavy stream, keeping the room bright. Serena wasn’t able to focus on the lesson today, her eyes kept darting towards the door. The class was on for twenty minutes and he still had not come. Is he on leave today? Why though? He wasn’t the type to miss classes on a whim. Concern stirred within her. Is he okay? She promptly took out her phone and opened the messaging app. She typed him a message asking about his well-being. She pressed the send button and just then the wooden door creaked open. Her head snapped up towards it along with others. Her eyes flared out slightly when she saw him standing at the doorway. An unconscious smile crossed her lips. But then she frowned when she noticed he was wearing a hoodie on this scorching day. His head was downcast, hiding his face. The teacher asked him his reason for coming late and he responded with a vague answer. Thankfully, the teacher allowed him in with a warning as he was one of the brighte
Serena was intrigued now. She wanted to see underground fighting. She had been researching it since he told her about it and she couldn’t help but be both thrilled and nervous about it. She had casually asked him if they had different names like fighters do. He told her that they do but didn’t disclose his name. She was smart enough to pick up all the clues he dropped inadvertently. With their help, she looked it up on the internet. She was amazed to know such illegal groups even had websites. How come cyber people are not taking heed of them. Looks like there was only one underground boxing group in their city. The time was 11 PM to 5 AM. She knew it could be dangerous. She was aware of all the risks involved. It was an illegal place which meant no guards. And still, she couldn’t shake off her curiosity. She wanted to see how such places work. She had always been a good girl playing by the book but once she wanted to do something wild. And her propeller was Asher. She wanted to see
"What are you doing here?" Asher frowned at Shanice, clearly displeased. Shanice gave him a smile, "We came to see the fight. Had no idea you fight too. I am so glad I came here," she replied, smiling. "We?" Asher repeated in question, ignoring her compliment.Yeah. I and Serena," saying that she glanced around the hall for Serena. Serena was already coming towards them. Her features were strained and strides were hesitant. Asher's lips pressed into a thin line when he saw her."Hi," Serena timidly called to him. "The way you handled that man was very impressive. I assume you have been doing it for a long time," Shanice took over, sounding curious. "You should know better than to come here. This place isn't safe," his gaze darted between them as he spoke with a grate to his voice. Guilt immediately washed over Serena. Maybe, he was right. They shouldn't have come here. Look, he was mad at her now. "We can go anywhere we want. You have no right to impose your misogynist ideology o
