CHAPTER SIXTY FIVE

I felt heavy and unspeakably exhausted, and my eyelids were too heavy even to lift. I wondered dimly what was wrong with me, but it didn’t feel important enough to mention when my brain was a swamp.

A hand grasped my limp fingers, where they lay splayed on the cover. ‘You will feel better tomorrow,’ the voice assured me with impressive confidence. ‘It’s your temperature. You have a slight fever.”

I wanted to tell him I would be fine by tomorrow morning, but I didn’t have the energy, and I simply sighed as I shuffled my legs across the bed to find the edge. Letting out a puff of breath, I attempted to roll my heavy body.

‘What are you trying to do?’ Giovanni demanded, sounding tried beyond worried, making me feel guilty.

"Bathroom," i said curtly, mortified by that necessity.

I felt Giovanni push back the duvet and scoop me up slightly. He had gotten so used to carrying me around that now I was certain it cost him not a thought to do it. I probably weighed far less than I think I did,
