Adara struggled to sleep, she felt dizzy and nauseated. She got up and wandered through the house. The bed seemed strange, big and empty. She went down to the kitchen and got some water. She concentrated on her own spirit, healing herself. After a few minutes she felt a bit stronger and slightly better.

She sat in the living room all through the night, staring out of the window. She tried Malachi’s phone a few times, but it went to voicemail. She wished Karani was still alive. She needed her so much. Karani would know exactly what to say. She missed her so much that it hurt.

“Adara.” Adara’s head snapped up because the voice that had spoken to her belonged to Karani.

“Am I dreaming?”

“I’m right here with you.”

“I’ve missed you so much, Karani.” Tears were flowing freely over Adara’s cheeks as Karani gripped her hand tightly.

“What are you doing, Adara? This isn’t your home.”

“I don’t have a home anymore. You were wrong, Karani, Kiran doesn’t love me.” The words were choked sobs and Ad

Christian was four years old and the only child of the late Phillip and Mary Jeffreys. He was a bright little boy and adapted to living with us quite easily after the first two weeks of bed wetting and temper tantrums.I had new found respect for my parents after dealing with Christian’s tantrums. He’d scream, throw things at my head, cry and hit the wall with his small fists. The first time it happened I was shocked and then I grabbed him, holding him tight against me.“I’m here, Christian, I’m not going anywhere. Scream and cry as much as you need to.” I’d take his pain, his guilt at surviving and the confusion of his loss as he slumped against me and cried himself to sleep.I assumed the role of caregiver and took over the responsibilities of taking him to daycare and putting him to bed. It was also the first time in my life that I had to pack a school bag. It took my mind off things as I was kept busy with his schedule and mine. His room used to be the spare guest room. It had a d

I sat down opposite Malachi. “Bridget from his daycare called me. She says he’s doing well in spite of everything else going on and that he was in a fight yesterday.”“Why did he fight?” Malachi asked casually without looking up.“Benjamin called him an orphan and Christian punched him in the face.” I laughed and Malachi looked at me sternly.“Violence is never the answer. Did you talk to him?” Malachi’s tone caught me off guard for a few seconds.“Yes, I did, I told him job well done.” Malachi laughed at the proud look on my face. “I also told his teacher that Benjamin got what he deserved, and she should speak to his parents instead of scolding Christian for defending his honor.”I had started training Christian like Malachi still trained me, although we were just doing punches and kicking a boxing bag. He was a tough little man, eager to learn and he would scrunch up his nose in concentration as he practiced.“Maybe you should ease up a bit on the training with him. You might creat

She looked up at me and I couldn’t believe my eyes. She looked like a ghost, thin and pale, she reminded me of that girl at my front door so long ago. I was shocked to see her look like this. Claire had been right, Adara wouldn’t have survived Declan for long. Her eyes were red rimmed from crying as she looked up at me. “Kiran, what are you doing here?”“I’m taking you home.” Adara looked down and I felt her pain and her guilt. I pulled her towards me and she felt so small in my arms as I enveloped her in my hug. I could have stood there all night just holding her.“Oh Kiran, I’ve made a huge mess of everything.” She broke down and cried again.“Then we’ll fix it together.” She shook her head as I rubbed my hand over her back, trying to soothe her.“You left me. You just left me.” She cried into my shoulder and the pain struck me square in my chest again.“I know but I want to show you everything.” I sat down with her next to me; I put my hands on either side of her head and I shared

I stepped out from the trees so that Declan could see me. “Declan!” He spun towards the sound of my voice.“You healed faster than I thought you would. Should have known, the Alpha blood runs deep in your veins,” Declan said as he saw me. He held Adara’s arm tightly and she was looking at me pleading with her eyes.Peter and Ian had circled to the other side and Declan caught their movement, he looked over to his side and I lunged for him in that instant. I bent his arm upward and he pulled the trigger once. I bent his wrist so that he had no choice but to loosen his grip on the gun. It fell to the ground and John picked it up. The priest’s face was pale and he looked bewildered.“Please come with me, Father.” Jackie pulled the priest to one side. He had shifted back and gotten dressed. Jackie led the priest out of the forest to safety and took him home.Declan twisted his hand out of my grip. He was stronger than I thought he’d be. He had lost his grip on Adara and Malachi had grabbe

After we had made up for lost time, we lay in bed together. She looked at me curiously and then she asked me that question.“Did you…?”“Did I what?” I played dumb. I knew she was wondering what I had done under the covers these past five months given my previous reputation.“No, don’t tell me. I’m angry enough at myself for ever leaving you.” She curled up next to me and I turned on my side and held her to me tightly.“Let’s leave the past exactly where it should be. I’m here and you’re here and that’s all that matters now.”“Thank you for saving me, again.” We fell asleep together, as it should be, holding each other tightly.Even though I felt fine, Adara insisted that I stayed in bed that following day. It lasted ten minutes before I got up, sneaked out of the window and ran down Main Street as I went for a jog.“Morning.” A man greeted me on the street and I smiled back at him.All along the way up Main Street people were greeting me and one man stopped me and shook my hand. Christian came into the living room rubbing his eyes and fell onto my lap. “My eyes are still asleep,” he mumbled and curled into a ball. My arms went around him instinctively and he smiled sleepily.“Time for you to get dressed and have breakfast, little man.” Christian didn’t budge but I felt his hands fist my t-shirt.After a little while I picked him up and we went upstairs. I helped him get dressed and sat with him in the bathroom while he talked non-stop and brushed his teeth at the same time. I could only smile at him.We all sat down in the dining room and everybody had breakfast while I had more coffee. Christian had seated himself on my right and was wolfing down sausages like there was no tomorrow.“When are we going home?” he asked and I looked at Malachi.“A few more days,” Malachi answered and Christian was happy with his answer.“I think you and Christian should go sight-seeing today,” Adara said and I looked at her. “I’m helping Claire today with some people in town.”

The lights dimmed as I switched the ignition of the car off and I looked at the desolate parking lot. I caught Adara’s scent as I looked around and started forward to the entrance of the maze, not seeing her. I smiled as I realized that she was already inside the maze. I could hear her running footsteps on the cobbled path and I started after her as she laughed.I caught sight of her as she made her way out of the maze and ran over the open field and into the forest. I picked up my pace and almost bumped into her as she waited for me near the footpath. She took my hand in hers and started walking.“What’s going on?”She led me off the footpath and deeper into the forest. My last encounter in the forest hadn’t been as pleasant as I hoped this one would be. I hadn’t seen her the whole day and I missed her.Adara gave me a smile and then looked down. “I thought we could use some alone time because I really need to talk to you.”I smiled at her because I wanted some alone time with her as

She climbed off me and started putting her clothes back on as she looked at me over her shoulder where I still lay on the blanket.“The night is young …”“And Christian is waiting for his bedtime story.” I laughed as she threw my t-shirt at me and got up and got dressed as well. We walked back to the car hand in hand and I swear the gravity between us was even stronger. We drove back home and I opened the front door for Adara. The living room was empty and Adara stood in the middle of it, smiling. It didn’t smell empty. I smelled the Irish pack.“He said yes!” Adara’s voice was loud in the quiet house as she smiled brightly at me.People came swarming in from everywhere. They were cheering and glasses of champagne clinked. Congratulations did the rounds and lots of hand shaking and back slapping. It felt eerily familiar.Christian ran up to me and I picked him up. He hugged me tightly and I felt like the luckiest man alive. I was surrounded by so many people that loved me and that I l

Adara and Kai were discharged the next morning, and I was eager to take them home. Her healing had kicked in and they were both doing really well. The baby room had been ready for weeks and my sense of duty and responsibility toward them came naturally. Our first night at home was spent in Kai’s room. Adara and I stood by his crib and just watched him as he slept. He was absolutely perfect.“Thank you, Adara. I hope he got the best parts of both of us,” I said.“I’m sure he did,” she said softly.I kissed her and kept my arms around her. She yawned and I nudged her toward the door. She needed sleep more than I did and she sighed with contentment when I pulled her against me after we got into bed.“I’ll always love both of you,” I whispered. The pack had gone overboard with their congratulations and Malachi had instant love in his eyes the first time he held him. I could only imagine how he’d felt the very first time he’d held me.It was a love so instant that it scared you, the fear w

Life was as it should be. Normal and boring. I finished up in the study that Malachi had now handed over to me, but it felt odd to say that it was mine. It was almost midnight as I checked the doors and windows. I did this every night, it still bothered me how Bryan had so easily entered our house, twice.I climbed into bed next to Adara and she automatically moved towards me. I put my hand on her stomach and I felt little bumblebee kick in response. I smiled as I closed my eyes. I must have slept for three hours when something woke me.I sat up in bed and listened. The house was quiet. I got up and ran to the bathroom and vomited into the toilet. My head pounded and I felt dizzy. Something was wrong somewhere. I sat on the bathroom floor and after ten minutes the nausea went away. I splashed water on my face and went back to the bedroom. I was just getting back into bed when Adara sat up, she was in agony.“What is it?” I asked her suddenly.“The baby… it hurts!” She screamed loudly

John looked disapprovingly at me and Malachi was in my head instantaneously. “What the hell did you just do?”He was anxious and nervous. I looked around me, the whole den was quiet, and everybody looked at me because I had killed a man that had tapped out. John walked into the circle.“Kiran! Do you care to explain? He tapped out and still you killed him!” John’s voice was stern as I still stood over Alexander’s body.“Wolf law nine, no claim shall be made on an Alpha’s position without due cause.” Malachi frowned slightly as I spoke to John.“That’s your excuse? An unlawful claim?” John shook his head as I smiled.“Subsection nine point twelve, any unlawful claim proven to be false shall be reverted back to the original pack with immediate effect without the Alpha having to defend his position, should a claim fight be the result, it shall be a fight of dominance.” John started laughing.“Quite right, that law hasn’t been used in many years.” John stated, and looked at me.Bryan look

I didn’t tell James or Adara about what had transpired in the kitchen in the late hours of that night. I wasn’t even sure that I believed it myself. Could it really be possible to get our pack status back?Malachi had also kept quiet and nine days later we received the summons to gather our pack at the den. John had informed Malachi that The Council would be present at this claim and that he would take charge of it himself. This time Adara and Shoran and Christian went to the den with us. Our whole pack gathered with us there and I was nervous. I hadn’t told her yet that I would be the one to fight Alexander and become Alpha of our pack. I didn’t think anybody besides us four in the kitchen that night knew.We stood in the den as Bryan brought in Alexander. He wasn’t pleased at being brought in by The Council. John Whitcombe and the other members were seated behind a table pretty much in the same way they had when we had been accused of murder. The difference this time was that we wer

Malachi had returned to work and there was a new energy around him. He smiled more until I had to sit him down one evening and have a talk with him. Adara had read Christian his story and they had both fallen asleep in his bed. I had carried her to our room when I went to check on Christian. Now I sat in the kitchen and waited for Malachi to return. It was eleven pm when his car finally drove into the garage. He walked into the kitchen and looked at me and I nodded at the chair next to me.He sat down and started laughing. “Why does this seem so familiar?” I laughed as well as it brought back memories.“I want to talk to you about drafting a will for me.”“Yes, it’s a good idea to make sure everyone is cared for should something happen to you.”We’ve had too many run ins and one day my luck would eventually run out and I wanted everything to stay in the family. I wanted to ensure that the children especially were looked after.“We should do it as soon as the baby is born.”“Thanks, Da

Jessica was good for his soul. Malachi found that he really liked her, all of her. She didn’t block anything from him and she was brutally honest. They spent as much time together as they could and after two months Malachi realized that they were a couple.“You do realize that technically we’re a couple.”They were laying in her bed one afternoon as Malachi played with her hair. Jessica laughed and turned her head to look at him.“Dude, we’ve been a couple since that day in your office.”She made him laugh and she made him feel good about himself without asking anything of him in return. She was just there, and he started laughing as he realized that he was in love with her.“We should tell Kiran.” Malachi sat upright in bed and checked his phone. It had been on silent the whole afternoon.“Why? Do we need his permission?” Jessica licked her lower lip and Malachi smiled.“No.”Jessica pushed him back down on the bed and bit his earlobe. “You are way too serious, Malachi.”“Why hide it

Malachi and Jessica held hands all the way back to Seward and she directed him to her house. He stopped the Navigator in front of the house and Jessica turned towards him. Malachi wanted to kiss her, undress her and touch every inch of her skin.“I like you, Malachi, but there is one more thing I have to tell you.” Jessica swallowed nervously.“It can’t be that bad.” Her nerves had him on edge. She didn’t come across as someone fearing anything but he knew whatever she had to tell him, it was important and likely to change things between them.“I slept with Kiran.” She watched Malachi’s face intently for some sort of reaction.“Okay…”“We were seventeen, he had just broken up with Sarah. We were both wasted and it just happened.”Malachi looked at her, listening; it was the truth he heard. Jessica’s mind was so open and she hid nothing from him, certain things were off limits, he could sense it and he didn’t delve deeper than what she was ready to tell him, but what she did show him w

Malachi smiled as he walked out of his office and found Jessica leaning against the front of the Navigator, looking care-free and young. She was young and he wasn’t so young anymore. She was also beautiful, intriguing and intelligent. She was still too young for him.“Took you long enough.” Jessica removed her sunglasses and smiled.“You are something else.” Malachi unlocked the doors and Jessica climbed into the passenger seat.“You can take me to dinner or a late lunch or whatever you want to call it.” She made herself comfortable in the seat and put her safety belt on. Malachi felt at ease, calm and happy. That emotion shocked him a little because he never thought he’d feel that again.Malachi could only smile as he drove out of the parking lot and headed towards the highway, heading out of Seward and in the general direction of Sterling.“Where are we going, handsome?” Malachi laughed as Jessica winked at him.“You know, I’m much too old for you.” Malachi glanced at her. Malachi sat in his office and thought of the events that had happened the last two weeks. He still couldn’t believe that they had escaped unscathed. If George Haynes had been a different Alpha, he and Kiran would both be dead.Malachi wiped a hand over his face. He had wanted to die that night; he’d wanted to die ever since Karani had died. She had been the other half of his soul and he saw no reason to go on without her.Even though he was an outcast now he knew that their pack would always remain intact no matter what status they had. He didn’t want to die anymore and he didn’t want to be Alpha either. He only regretted that Kiran would suffer the same consequences. He would’ve made a terrific Alpha.“Sorry Malachi.” Tim Oakes had been on his phone, leaving Malachi alone with his thoughts.“No problem. We can finalize the contract next week and you’ll be the proud new owner of the beach front cabins.”“Thank you. I really appreciate all the hard work you’ve put in.”Malachi and Tim
