Part Thirty-Seven

I struggled to sleep and when I finally did my dreams were haunted by Adara’s parents. I kept seeing images of them with her, almost dreaming of the memories she had told me about them. I tossed and turned and I was glad to find that Adara was still asleep when I woke up for the umpteenth time.

I got up from the bed and went downstairs for some water. That prickly feeling was back again at the base of my neck and I felt cold all over. I turned around slowly and they stood there watching me.

“Keep her safe. She is yours now. You have our blessing.” Andrew and Elizabeth Jameson both smiled at me and disappeared like mist in the morning sun.

I wasn’t sure if I had imagined it or if it had been real. I wanted their blessing, I wanted them to know that I’d always look after her. I got back into bed and slept fitfully until the knock at our door woke me at eight am.
