There was an immediate reply—a smiley emoji. Jaybie seemed to have been waiting for his reply.

Jaybie: [Then when are you free? Let me treat you to dinner?]

Maxwell: [Hmm, I'm not free for now. Let's just keep in touch by text for now.]

Jaybie: [Okay. *sad emoji*]

Maxwell smiled, turned off the phone, and put it back in the dark cabinet compartment.

After Sonnet finished her shower, Mrs. Wilson brought up supper.

Maxwell raised his right arm bitterly. "My arm hurts so much. I can't hold the spoon..."

Sonnet laughed. "How did you eat dinner before this? So your arm is hurt and you can't move your hands anymore?"

Maxwell pouted his handsome face and looked up at her eagerly like a wronged little puppy.

Sonnet's heart softened again. "Okay, fine. Wifey will feed you!"

This guy was better at seeking her attention than Jaybie.

She took a spoon to feed Maxwell some warm oatmeal. When she gave him the second bite, Maxwell pushed the spoon to her mouth. "Darling, eat!"
