Jenna Brooks’s POV

“No!” I replied blandly.

The smile on Liam’s face suddenly disappeared, “I understand if you’re too scared of losing.”

“What? No. I’m confident you’ll never be able to pull it off.”

“Then our deal is on?”

“Deal.” I replied.

He brought his face a bit closer to mine and whispered, “Good girl.” then my breathing seemed to stop entirely when one of his hands moved from above my head, traveling hesitantly down to stroke over my hair. As soon as I felt him take a strand between his fingers, shivers broke out over my body and butterflies swooped around my stomach.

Oh my God, Jenna. What is this new feeling? You need to make it stop.

“Aren’t you going inside?” I heard that familiar voice say. It was undoubtedly Conrad, standing there and watching us. Had he been there the whole time? Liam dropped his hand and I nervously walked into the club room to avoiding any questions.

Luckily, first rehearsals were mainly table reading and talking. Our scripts were handed out t

Jenna Brooks’s POV “Do you always have to close your eyes shut?” he whispered and I felt him pull away.I slowly opened my eyes and he was now standing a few meters away from me, a smirk on his face. Why did he pretend like he was going to kiss me? Why did he get my hopes up?“I…”He cocked his eyesbrows as he stared down at me, “You didn’t think I was going to kiss you, did you?”My gaze shifted slightly as I nervously tried to avoid eye contact. Of course, I thought he was about to kiss me. Why else would he bring his lips so close to mine?I let out an exaggerated “What,” then told him I was used to closing my eyes whenever someone was too close to my face. I wasn’t sure if he bought it because his face was too unreadable. With clammy palm, I held on to my script and bade him a quick ‘good night.’ before dashing off to my room.************ The following day, I tried to avoid Conrad because of what had happened last night. It was kind of embarrassing for me. That morning,

Jenna Brooks’s POV I slowly stared up at him and even through my tear filled eyes, I could see that it was Liam. He had a cool headband on and he was in his football jersey. What was he doing here? Wasn’t he supposed to be at his football match? He led me out of the classroom, our steps were measured until we finally got to the rooftop. The welcoming breeze was soothing as Liam handed me a bottle of water. I took a seat on a bench and gulped down. He dropped down to sit beside me and pulled me in for a hug. I snuggled into his chest and cried. “I don’t deserve to be anyone’s friend.”“That’s not true, Jenna. I know you didn’t do it. You’re a great friend and anyone would be lucky to have you.” I nodded against his chest. When I couldn’t cry anymore, I sat up, wiping my cheeks. I looked at Liam, who was watching me. I tried to smile. When I did, he took hold of my hand and brought it to his chest.“I’m sorry Olivia was so mean to you. She’s also dealing with a lot,” Liam sa

Jenna Brooks’s POVA week later…A lot had changed in the past week and I sometimes wondered how it all went down. After Conrad and I kissed, a lot of kisses and make outs had followed. We made out in the school auditorium, behind the bleachers, in my room, in his room, on the rooftop and in drama club room—mostly drama club room after we were done with rehearsals. This one week had been the best one week of my life. I still pinched myself every now and then to be sure I wasn’t dreaming. And there was Oliva who hadn’t come to school since the incident. The whole school wasn’t talking about it anymore so I expected her to get her shit together and face the rest of senior year head on. I had asked Jeanette to ask Summer about Olivia but Jeanette had said Olivia already quit working for her. We still hadn’t found out who told everyone about Olivia’s background. And there was Liam, who was sitting across the room in the student’s council room. He was elected as student council pre

Jenna Brooks’s POV As closing bell rang, Conrad and I made our way to the drama club room. Everyone else was already there except Liam. During rehearsals, Conrad and I barely spoke unless need be. He had told me, “I don’t want the others to think we’re being unserious with the play,” and I had totally agreed with it. We weren’t supposed to mix duties with pleasure. As I sat across from the room, I noticed Conrad was talking to Anika and I tried to look away and not be bothered but I couldn’t help it. Thinking about it, we hadn’t really labeled our relationship. What were we? He just told me he liked me, I told him I liked him too and then we made out continuously. Most times when we were together, we hardly talked about anything. He would always cut me off in the middle of a sentence by either kissing me or squeezing my hands. But it was too early to label our relationship, right?I watched Conrad walk out of the drama club room, clearly angry. I thought of going after hi

Jenna Brooks’s POV “Let’s talk later, Jenna. I think I left the oven on. Bye.” The call ended abruptly and I couldn’t help but be worried. Why would mum not want me home for winter break? As I set my phone down, there was a knock on the door. I took a deep breath and opened the door. It was Conrad, he smiled and then walked in as I closed the door behind me.“Hey…” I greeted dryly. I couldn’t deny the fact that I was still worried about the whole Anika thing because I wasn’t sure where I stood. Nobody knew what was going on between Conrad and I and our relationship didn’t have a name either. Deep down, I had always wanted to ask him about where I stood and who I was to him but I had always feared what answer I would get.I sat on my reading table while he took a seat on my bed.“You’re mad at me?” Conrad started, giving me the puppy eyes. I almost fell for it but I stood my ground.“What? No.” I lied.“It’s about what happened at school earlier today, right?” he added as he

Jenna Broook’s POVAs Jeanette and Summer settled in, there was a noticeable tension in the air. Apart from Jeanette and me, no one else knew who Summer was."So, Jean, this is the first time I'm meeting your friend," Auntie Laurel started, as everyone's eyes stayed fixed on Summer, except for Conrad, who didn't seem to care."Yeah, Summer and I have been friends for a while now," Jeanette replied."Alright," there was a pause. "Let family game night begin!"We started with charades. Auntie Laurel and Jamie dominated the round, scoring ten points. Jeanette and Summer struggled, only managing to score five points. Conrad and I did poorly because I was terrible at playing charades, so we only scored two points."It's fine, Jenna. We'll do better next time," Conrad reassured me after the scores were announced. The next round was about French culture. I was excited when Conrad told me he had taken a French course before. We were confident we would win this round."We're going to win t

Jenna Brooks’s POVAs the night wore on, Conrad, Jamie and I decided to talk to Auntie Laurel on Jeanette’s behalf. She couldn’t possibly stay isolated in her room for so long. As we gathered nervously outside Auntie Laurel’s bedroom, we all exchanged uncertain glances.Conrad took a deep breath and rapped gently on the door. "Mom, it's us," he called out.Auntie Laurel’s voice, muffled and stern, floated from the other side. "What is it? Can't you see I'm busy?"Undeterred, Jamie stepped forward. "Mom, we need to talk about Jeanette. Locking her away won't solve anything. We need to address this issue maturely."Taking this as my cue, I shifted from foot to foot anxiously. "Please, Auntie Laurel, Jeanette deserves to be happy. We can't force her to break up with someone she truly loves."The door creaked open slowly, revealing Auntie Laurel, her face etched with frustration. Her piercing eyes surveyed us, "You think you can come here and lecture me about parenting? I have my r

Jenna Brooks’s POV “If high school love is like a candle in the rain, I, Liam, will hold an umbrella for you.” Liam said, as he took a dramatic pose and held an imaginary umbrella over my head.I shrugged with an eyeroll, and he understood immediately that I wasn’t in the mood. We were both in the student’s council room and were making copies of more flyers to spread the word about the school play. It was in four days.“You don’t seem yourself, is everything okay?” he said as he sat down back, stacking the flyers.“Do you think the flyers are enough?” I asked.“You’re changing the subject”“What subject?” “I just asked you if everything is fine.”“And I just asked you if the flyers are going to be enough.”Liam moved his chair really close to mine and took my hands in his. What’s with people trying to comfort someone by holding their hands?“You can tell me anything.” he said, his voice almost a whisper.I took in a deep breath and contemplated on what to do. Jenna Brooks’s POV As hugged Conrad tightly but he wasn’t hugging me back, I wasn’t sure why. I let my hands slip down to his waist and looked up at him but he wasn’t looking at me. It was like he don’t want to see me.I slowly let go of him and took a step back, searching his eyes. He didn’t say anything, instead, he held up his phone. My eyes widened in shock as I stared at the screen. It was definitely Liam and I at the theater. How did this get to Conrad’s phone? Who sent this to him? How long had he seen it? What did he think of me now? I had a lot of questions running in my mind. Questions I was just too afraid to ask because I was scared if what the answer might be."Someone sent this to me, Jenna. How could you lie to me? How could you be with Liam?" Conrad asked , his fists clenched as he took a step away from me.My face twisted in guilt. "Conrad, I..." I began, my voice barely above a whisper. “I’m so sorry. I should have told you about it. It meant nothing, it was f

Jenna Brooks’s POV"Sure, I'll be there in thirty minutes," I hesitated before finally clicking the send button on my phone.I placed my phone on my dresser and took one last look in the mirror. I was dressed in a tank top, jeans, and black high tops. My hair was thrown up in a messy bun.I grabbed my jacket and tucked my phone into my bag before leaving the room. Liam and I were going to see a play today, and he was already on his way to the theater.I had asked him not to pick me up from home because I didn't want him to see me. I had already lied to Conrad, telling him I was going to the library to avoid any potential issues. As I walked down the hallway, I paused in front of Conrad's room and opened the door, scanning the room with my eyes as I stood in the doorway."Conrad?" I called out softly, but there was no response. I entered the room completely and closed the door behind me.As I approached his bed, I suddenly felt hands wrap around my waist from behind. Jenna Brooks’s POV"I... I don't know," I stuttered, and Liam smiled.I watched as he picked up his phone and stared at the screen for a moment before raising his head to look at me."The play is this weekend. If we go watch it, we can study the staging, characters, analyze the theme, set design, and performance history all in one go. That's like fixing ninety-five percent of the project in one day without burying your face in a book for days."It was a great idea, but I still had my doubts. Conrad was already worried about me being paired with Liam. He would flip if he knew we were going to watch a play together, which was more like watching a movie together."You're worried about Conrad?" Liam asked, setting his phone down on the desk with a smirk on his lips. "Don't you think you're overthinking? It's just a play. For a project. Emphasis on 'project.' It's not personal.""Alright," I replied, and I could see Liam's face light up.The play was the best option. It would save us time

Jenna Brooks’s PerspectiveI didn't like the way Liam glared at me when Mr. Bassett called both of our names, nor did I appreciate Conrad's annoyed reaction as he walked out of the class. It was unusual for him to be so angry out of nowhere. I wasn't sure if he was mad because I got paired with Liam or if it was something unrelated. As Mr. Bassett left the class, Liam slowly approached my desk and leaned in, placing his hand on it. He didn't say anything, as if he was waiting for me to speak."Hey," he finally whispered."Hi," I replied softly."My grades have slipped a bit, and I really need this project to improve them. Will you work with me?" He leaned in closer and smiled suddenly. "So, what do you say? Let's work together?"I stared at him for a moment before regaining my composure. This was too easy. I had expected him to make a big deal out of it, but he was ready to work together. Was there something I needed to be worried about?"Sure, let's make this work," I replied, and h

Conrad Declan's POV"I have no idea what to get my girlfriend for Valentine's Day," I said to Carter as I sat in a chair next to his bed.We were in the school nurse's office because Carter had indigestion and needed to lie down for an hour."Dude, you're only worried about Valentine's Day? What kind of friend are you?" he managed to say, trying to nudge me with his elbow but I dodged."Come on, you'll be up in no time. This is my first Valentine's Day with Jenna and I want it to be special," I said, tapping my foot anxiously.Being with Jenna was amazing. I loved her and wanted everything to be perfect on Valentine's Day. I wanted her to feel special because she was special to me."Relax, bro. I have an idea.""Really?""Yeah, but first, get me my phone," Carter said with a smirk."Where is it?""In my locker, I forgot to grab it."Sighing, I stood up. "I'm only doing this for Jenna."Carter smiled. "I know you're crazy about her. Now, go get it."Rolling my eyes, I left the nurse'

Jenna Brooks’s POVLiam was one of the few guys I knew that didn’t smoke but seeing him with a cigarette and thick smoke coming out of his mouth, broke me.When did he start smoking? Didn’t he know about the repercussions? He had never smoked, why did he suddenly pick up the habit now?A smirk curled up on his lips as soon as he saw me, “If it isn’t Conrad’s little girlfriend,” he said in a sarcastic tone and leaned against the wall. His words didn’t hurt me as much as the sudden change in him. He was the opposite of what he used to be and it saddened me. I didn’t want to see him like this, I didn’t want him like this.“What happened to you?” I asked as softly as I could as I took a step closer to him. He frowned, “What do you mean?”“You know what I mean, Liam. This isn’t you.” I said again. He took out the cigarette from his lips and tossed it aside.“I haven’t changed, it’s still me.”“No, Liam. It isn’t. Everything about you is different now. Your hair is different, your dressing

He walked up to his chair and said, “It’s good to have you back, man,” and then they fist-bumped.How? They weren’t even that close but he could fist bump him and not me? Conrad sat next me me and asked if I was okay. I nodded. Jenna Brooks’s POVConrad and I had been together for more than a week now and everything had been perfect so far. We had both dropped out of the prom king and queen race and now, our relationship was drama-free.Everybody knew about us, when I said everybody, I meant everybody. Auntie Laurel had been so happy when we told her about us, Jamie jokingly said I deserved better and Jeanette said she already saw it coming although she still hadn’t forgiven me for giving up prom queen after everything she had put into it.Everybody at school also knew about Conrad and I. Stig was disappointed when I told him about the whole change of plans but he forgave me after I found him another prom date. Toralei’s reaction was the most shocking one. When I told her Conrad and I were now together and we both were dropping out of the race, she only said ‘Cool’ and then she walked away. But I knew there had to be something up her sleeves. Conrad Declan’s POVI leaned against the car as I waited for Jenna to step out. As I saw her walking out of the house, I felt like I’d walked into a dream. My heart clenched, she looked beautiful in her sleeveless white gown.“Hey,” she said slowly, giving me a shy smile. I melted at the nervous look on her face but still, she had never looked this beautiful.“You look amazing,” I said and she smiled coyly and looked away. I pushed the button on the automatic locks and opened the car door for her. She sighed and sat down. I walked around the car and slid in next to her. Without saying anything, I pulled out of the driveway and turned on the radio. “How about we watch a movie?” I asked, glancing at Jenna before glancing back at the road.“Sure,” she said dryly and I frowned.“You don’t sound enthusiastic,” “No, we can do whatever you want,” she said. There was silence for a moment before she spoke again, “And, thank you.”I concentrated on the road, as I said, “For what?”“I would p
