Nyx’s Pov
“No! Don't take her, please! Please, I'll pay you! I'll do whatever you want, leave my daughter alone, please!” My mother screamed, the corner of her eyes red with tears. Her face was heavily bruised, purple and black. She had been hit with a plank by the loan sharks who had suddenly come to our house. “If you don't shut your mouth, we'll be forced to do worse to you! However, your daughter… She's really pretty” The one who looked like their leader came forward, his sunken eyes leered at me. I shrunk back, my entire body trembling. “Why… Why are you doing this to us? We… We don't owe you anything, we've never borrowed money from you.” I yelled, my voice shaking. The leader sneered, revealing yellowed teeth as he shifted his weight and leaned in closer. His voice was cold, unfeeling. “You don’t know, do you?” He chuckled darkly, the sound echoing through the small room, “Your dear father owes us more than you can imagine. He borrowed money to feed his gambling habit. When his luck ran dry, he ran too, leaving behind only broken promises and well, you two.” My mother’s cries turned into broken sobs, her fingers gripping the tattered edge of her apron. The words hung heavy in the air, suffocating me. My father had left months ago, claiming he had found a job in another town. Now, the truth stabbed through me, sharper than any knife. “What… What do you mean?” I stammered, my voice small and quaking. The leader took a step forward, the dim light from the single bulb casting shadows over his gaunt and yellow face, “He said if he couldn’t pay, we could sell everything he had. The house. The furniture.” He paused, and his lips twisted into a sick smile. “And even his daughter.” A chill ran through me, and my knees buckled as I fell to the ground. My mother tried to stand, to shield me, but another thug pushed her down roughly. She fell with a gasp, her eyes wide with terror as she reached out for me. “No!” She cried, her voice hoarse, “Please, take me instead. Not my Nyx!” The leader waved her off as if she were nothing more than an annoying insect, “He specifically mentioned the girl. Said she was young and would fetch a good price. You’re not worth anything to us, old woman. I didn't notice this but her eyes look pretty special, I've never seen eyes like hers before, she will really fetch a perfect amount of money for those perverted men who have needs for unique women like you.” Despair clawed at my throat as the realisation hit me. This wasn’t just a threat. My father had sold me for his debt, and now they had come to collect it. One of the thugs stepped forward and grabbed my arm, his grip iron and merciless. I twisted, trying to break free, but it was useless. His strength far outweighed mine. “Let go!” I screamed, tears streaming down my face as I thrashed. The leader simply watched with a disinterested expression, as if he’d seen this play out a hundred times before. “I'll pay you back! Whatever my husband owed, I'll pay you back. You can take everything in the house but please, return my daughter back to me. Please.” The thug turned, glaring at my mother, “Do you know how much your husband owes us? If you don't know, let me tell you. He owes us one million, do you think you can pay us back? Even if we don't take your daughter and we give you more time to pay, the men who your husband had scammed out of their money would come here for you.” The leader spat, his eyes glinting with malice. The number and his words hung in the air like a death sentence, suffocating the tiny room with its weight. My mother’s eyes widened, hope shattering in them like glass. That amount was impossible; it was more than she could ever earn in a lifetime. The room fell silent except for my mother’s choked sobs. I felt like I was drowning, suffocating on the truth of our fate. A million dollars. The realisation that there was no way out sank into my bones like ice. The thug holding me yanked my arm harder, pulling me toward the door. Panic surged through me, hot and desperate. “No!” I screamed, fighting with everything I had. The leader’s grin only widened as I thrashed, a cruel pleasure in my defiance. I bit down on the arm of the man restraining me, tasting blood as my teeth sank into his flesh. He roared in pain, stumbling back and releasing me. “Little witch!” He shouted, cradling his bleeding arm, where a chunk of flesh was torn away. The metallic tang of blood filled my mouth, and I spat it out, gasping. But my victory was short-lived. A heavy blow struck the side of my head, and pain seared through my skull. The room spun wildly, and darkness closed in around the edges of my vision. I felt myself falling, and then there was nothing. When I finally came to, my ears were ringing. I struggled to open my eyes, my head throbbing in time with my racing heart. The noise around me surged, a myriad of voices, laughter, and shouts. Blinking rapidly, I forced myself to focus. Bright lights glared down at me, and I squinted, taking in my surroundings. I was standing in the middle of a large stage, bound at the wrists and ankles. The room beyond was grand and opulent, a stark contrast to the crumbling house I had been taken from. Rows of finely dressed men and women sat in plush chairs, their faces hidden behind decorative masks. They watched me with expressions of eager anticipation, some smirking, others cold and detached. Where was I? What was this place? I looked around, my eyes darting everywhere to figure out where I was. I was like a wild bird in a cage. “Our product is finally awake! And as you can see, this is a unique product, her eyes are very special!” I was suddenly held by the chin and forced to face the crowd. “You will never see eyes such as this anywhere around! Her starting bid is from Six Hundred Thousand Dollars!” At first, I was confused. Confused on what they were putting a price on but then, realisation dawned on me. I was in an auction house. And I was the item that was being sold.Nyx's Pov “Six Hundred One Thousand Dollars!” “Seven Hundred Thousand!” Bids rang throughout the auction house and the more they spoke, the more I got scared. “Nine Hundred Thousand!” Someone bidded and everyone went silent. My eyes immediately went to who had bidded and my eyes widened. “Nine Hundred Thousand going once… twice…” “N… no. You… You can't give me to him!” I screamed, turning my head to stare at the Auction Master, “You can't give me to him!” I struggled to get up, trying to rush towards him but it was no use. I was held down, pushed to the ground, my knees hitting the ground with a painful thud. With fear and wide eyes, I stared at the fat bellied man with horror coursing through my veins. No, this couldn't be. I can't be given to him!“Going thrice! She has been sold at Nine Hundred Thousand!” A roar of approval erupted from the crowd as the gavel came down with a decisive thud, sealing my fate. My heart felt like it was going to burst out of my chest. I clawed a
Nyx's Pov “Who… Who the hell are you?” Gary spat, trying to regain his composure, though the tremor in his voice betrayed him.The man didn’t respond at first, simply raising an eyebrow as he reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a sleek handgun. Gary's courage faltered and was replaced by shock, sweat dripping down his forehead. He swallowed hard, his eyes darting between the stranger and the gun. The man finally spoke, his voice smooth as silk but laced with steel.“You’ve taken something that doesn’t belong to you.” He said, his eyes narrowing as he took a step forward, “And I’m here to collect it.”Gary’s eyes flicked to me, and he sneered, a desperate laugh bubbling up from his throat, “This girl? She’s mine. I bought and paid for her so she's mine!”The stranger’s expression hardened, and without a form of hesitation, he aimed the gun at Gary’s leg and fired. The sound of the shot echoed through the air, and Gary screamed as he crumpled to the ground, clutching his bleedi
Nyx's Pov Alden kept his eyes on the road, and I leaned back slightly, wondering what he had to do with me. He had found me even before I was able to find him. Alden Black Lombardi. A ruthless mafia lord who killed with cruelty and didn't care about anything else other than what he wanted to do. Gary was supposed to lead me to him, but instead, he was killed and I was captured by this guy instead. So, obviously there was going to be a change of plans. The car ride felt endless, the city lights flickering like fleeting memories as they streaked past the windows. Yeah… Memories. They began to resurface in my head. Three years ago, I was captured by a mafia gang and sold to another gang. I was ten at that time, and I had to fight for my life amongst the other girls. Older, more ruthless girls who had been there for a very long time. Some of them had gotten pregnant, some of them had been killed off. The situation I was in was either you survive, or you die. A situation that most of u
Nyx's Pov Helena struck first, her weapon slicing across one man’s throat in a blur of movement. The second man reached for his gun, but I was faster. I lunged at him, driving my blade into his chest. His eyes widened in shock as he crumpled to the floor. The third man tried to run, but Helena threw a knife she snatched from a dead guy, hitting him squarely in the back. He fell face-first, the bottle of whiskey shattering on his face. We armed ourselves quickly, grabbing as many weapons as we could carry. The chaos in the courtyard was our opportunity. Victor was too busy playing the role of executioner to notice us creeping behind the line of guards. “Now.” Helena whispered. We opened fire. The sound of gunshots echoed through the compound, and screams erupted as guards and prisoners alike scrambled for cover. Helena was ruthless, her shots precise and deadly. I wasn’t as skilled, but my anger made up for it. Every pull of the trigger was a release, every fallen guard a
Nyx's Pov “Hm.” Alden hummed lightly, reaching out to hold my wrist. He pulled me closer and then leaned down, wrapping his arms around the curve of my waist and with one strong movement, he pulled me closer to him. I stiffened for a moment, caught off guard by the sudden closeness. His eyes gleamed with something unreadable, but I could see the shift in his demeanor, a man who was never afraid, now calculating his next move.“Play along.” He whispered, so quietly it was barely a breath. Before I could question him, his voice rang out, loud.“Princess…” He said, the word dripping with affection, “You’re far too stubborn for your own good, but I wouldn’t have you any other way.”My eyes widened in realization, I caught on quickly and forced a smile, leaning into his chest.“You think flattery will get you anywhere, darling?” I said, my voice light and teasing, though my heart pounded in my chest. His lips curved into a smirk, his grip tightening around my waist. He was strong, too st
Nyx's Pov “Well… Um…” I stammered, the corner of my lips twitching at the sudden question, “I grew up with that habit. The thing is, as a child, my father owed a lot of debts from gambling and stuff like that. So many times, my mother and I were taken by loan sharks and those my father owed money to. I was able to figure out when someone was coming or hiding to get us despite how quiet they were. It's just an instinct that I grew up with.” Alden's eyes narrowed at me, but he didn't say a word, he still kept that infuriating smile on his lips. “You… Don't believe me?” I questioned softly, almost tearfully in fact, “If you don't believe me, then…” “Who said anything about not believing you, princess? I believe you, really.” Alden cut me off, giving me a closed eye smile that clearly said, ‘No, I don't believe you’. My heart sank. This guy would be hard to deal with… But nevertheless, I already knew that before coming here. I masked my thoughts with a tearful smile, scurrying backwa
Alden's Pov I stood outside the door for a moment, staring at the locks. I was debating on leaving them open, and not locking her up but I decided against it. Looking at her, it was clear that she was a kind of person who would get herself into a trouble. And in this place, it was very wavy to get yourself killed if you were an outsider. I still needed her, even if I wasn't even sure it was ‘her’ yet. But if it was ‘her’...“That girl…” I muttered under my breath, the faint stench of her vomit hitting my nose before I even reached the base of the stairs and I grimaced. I should have known what her reaction would be, but I had no idea it would leave a mess. Her trembling, tear-streaked face had almost been amusing, but the cleanup was decidedly less so.I stepped into the living room and let my eyes fall on the puddle of vomit on the floor, my frown deepened. With a sigh, I tilted my head back and called out into the shadows, a voice sharp and commanding. “Nine.” There was a moment
Nyx's Pov “Get up!” Someone screamed in my ear, I groaned, turning to my side. “Get the hell up!” Who the heck was screaming into my ears like that?! Didn't they know that someone was sleeping?! However, it seems like the patience of the person was over as I was jerked awake by a sharp blow to my back. My eyes flew open, adrenline coursing through my veins as my body reacted on instinct. My fist was halfway through the air, ready to strike when my mind screamed at me to stop. Undercover! Stay in character, you're undercover! Instead of hitting the person who hit me, I froze, my breathing ragged. As if on cue, my eyes welled up with tears. I sniffed, letting my bottom lip tremble as I turned to face the culprit. A woman stood over me, her arms crossed and a frown plastered on her face. She looked to be in her late forties, with sharp features and an equally sharp demeanor. Her dark hair was pulled into a severe bun, and her cold eyes bore into me with no hint of sympathy."Get u
Chapter 121 Author's Pov Marcello stood at the head of the long, dimly lit hall, his fingers drumming impatiently against the armrest of his chair as he stared at the other council members who were sitting very quietly on their chairs. The flickering lights cast sharp shadows across his face, emphasizing the irritation in his cold, calculating eyes. The tension in the room was very thick, his subordinates shifting uneasily under his glare. The sound of hurried footsteps broke the silence as one of his guards stumbled in, breathless and shaken."My Lord, I… I have news to report.” The guard panted, bowing deeply as he rushed into the room. Marcello’s sharp gaze pinned him in place, “Speak and be fast about it. Do not waste my time.”The man swallowed hard, “The thing is… We found out that... That Nyx, she has escaped. She knocked out the others and escaped, along with Liam and Yasmin. We can't find those two as well. For a moment, silence hung in the air. Then, with a sudden moveme
Chapter 120Nyx's Pov I stared at Yasmin, blinking, "Your men?"She smirked, "Did you really think I wouldn’t have my own people in this whole situation? The moment I heard that Marcello was coming, I asked some people to infiltrate his guards. I wanted to come and warn you but it was too late, we had already been put into house arrest.” Liam shifted beside her, "Marcello doesn’t know we’ve compromised his men, which gives us the advantage. But we need to move fast. If he realizes something is wrong, he’ll change the security around the mansion."I glanced back at the ongoing fight. Yasmin’s planted guards were making it look real, striking down Marcello’s loyalists and drawing attention away from the inside."Alright, so what’s next?" I asked.“We bypass them and then go to Alden, he should be able to help us take control of the houses back. It won't take long for us to leave the main mansion to the outer part, though it might take longer as the outside may be more guarded than it
Chapter 119 Nyx's Pov“I know but how the hell are you going to leave this place without being spotted. There are men everywhere.” Alexandra muttered furiously. She had been whispering since we started talking about how to escape. I didn't say anything, just motion med towards the window. Cassandra's eyes narrowed, "You're not seriously thinking of escaping through that window, are you?"I walked over to the small, barred window on the far side of the room. It was high up, but nothing I couldn't handle. The bars were old, rusted at the edges. With enough force, they could be broken."I don’t think it. I know it." I turned back to face them, "Stay put. I’ll get myself out."Valeria gave me a doubtful look, "How do you plan to…?"I didn’t answer. Instead, I climbed onto the ledge and pressed my hands against the bars. With a sharp exhale, I pulled. The metal groaned in protest, but I kept going. My arms trembled with the effort, my fingers aching, but then a loud snap and the bar bro
Chapter 118 Nyx's Pov “It's true. What you were thinking… Cassandra is your mother.” Alexandra said, handing me the reports. I opened it quickly, going through it. A smile subconsciously rested in my lips but it was short-lived as Valeria crashed into the hideout as I had come to call it, panic written so vividly on her face. “What's wrong? Why do you look like that?” “They found it! He's back! That person is back!” She said, her voice shaking. “What are you talking about? What did they find? And who is back? Speak clearly and stop going about in riddles, Valeria! Speak!” “They found Aunt Cassandra. Uncle Marcello is back, and he has captured Cassandra.” “What?!” Alexandra turned her head back so fast that it felt like her head was going to fall off her neck, “He wasn't supposed to come back until after everything was over! How did he…?” “Now that's a very good question, isn't it?” Alexandra was cut off by a very unfamiliar voice. I glanced at the person who spoke from the co
Chapter 117 Nyx's Pov “They knew that if my mother had twins, the future of the clan would be secured. The elders would never challenge her reign if there were two heirs ready to take over. But if something were to happen to us…”I exhaled sharply, “Then the succession would be thrown into chaos.”“Exactly.” Cassandra folded her arms, “My uncles, desperate for power, came up with a plan. They wanted to eliminate one of us to weaken my mother’s claim. But something went wrong. My mother found out about the plot but at that moment, due to my father taking control, my mother didn't have enough power so she announced to the clan that only one of us had survived birth. And that ‘one’ was me.”I blinked, “Wait, hold on. She just… hid you?”Cassandra’s lips pressed into a thin line, “I was raised in secret. Hidden away, protected, but also erased. My mother believed that if the clan thought I was dead, my uncles would stop their attempts to kill me. For years, I was a ghost, existing in th
Chapter 116 Nyx's Pov I nearly tripped over my own feet, whipping around so fast I almost gave myself whiplash, “Oh, come on! Can people stop sneaking up on me for one damn minute? I swear, I need to start carrying a bell for you people.”Valeria rolled her eyes, while the Cassandra I knew, or at least, the one I thought I knew, stood beside her, arms crossed, staring at the other Cassandra like she had just found a cockroach in her morning tea.“Okay, okay, timeout.” I raised my hands, “Can someone please explain why there are two Cassandras in this room? Because, last I checked, cloning was not a thing.”The Cassandra I had been speaking to, the one who had tried to murder me with a dagger, mind you, sighed, rubbing her temples, “Honestly, I should have just stabbed you instead of answering questions.”“You tried!” I shot back, “You missed!”The Cassandra I knew, or thought I knew, finally spoke, her voice cold. “I knew I should have had this place sealed off completely.”My eyes
Chapter 115Nyx's Pov I took another step toward the bed, my muscles coiled like a snake waiting to strike. Everything about this room felt wrong. It wasn’t just the fact that there was a bed here, tucked away like someone had been living in secrecy. It was the eerie stillness, it was the way no one had not known about this place. Even though Valeria had shown me this place, I'm pretty sure she hadn't really entered because no matter how stupid she was, if she knew what was in here, she would not have allowed me in. My eyes scanned the room with careful precision, there was no movement or no sound. Yet, every instinct in my body screamed that I wasn’t alone. Then, something caught my attention, a tiny hole in the stone wall that light shone through. I moved toward it cautiously, crouching low until my eye aligned with the opening. I had a perfect, unobstructed view of the council meeting room. Through the hole, I could see the grand mahogany table, the high-backed chairs, everythin
Chapter 114 Nyx’s POVThe café we met was a quiet, tucked-away place, the kind people used for shady dealings and whispered confessions. Dim lighting cast shadows over the small table between me and Valeria, who sat across from me, twirling her straw like a bored child. She hadn’t even touched her drink.I, on the other hand, sipped my coffee slowly, watching her fidget. Valeria must have always been the odd one out in Cassandra’s family, a pawn pretending to be a player. She wasn’t dangerous like her mother, but that didn’t mean she was harmless. However, she took her elegance from her mother. Such a pity that she's not as smart. “You dragged me all the way here, so spill it.” She huffed, crossing her arms, “What do you want, Nyx?”“Technically, I didn't drag you all the way here. You came because you were curious about what I wanted to ask so don't accuse me of what I didn't do.” I tilted my head slightly and before she said anything else, I continued, “A little information. But i
Chapter 113Nyx's Pov “The woman who came to see us didn't drop her name. She was hell bent on us not knowing their name. After Rhea’ escaped, it wasn't until two days later that she came. She asked us a few questions which at the time sounded weird.”“Questions like?” “If she was pregnant before she left. If she had given birth, if she had told us where she was from. It sounded like she was trying to wring all sorts of information from us that she might have told us. We told her half truths so it wouldn't seem like we were lying or they would find us. They eventually let us go with the promise of not telling anyone. Although she didn't tell us her name, I can describe what she looks like to you.” Elena's mother finished. I nodded, giving her the go ahead. “She was tall, looked very young and well taken care of but she was in early thirties, could be in her late twenties as well. She had a mole under her left eye, she had grey eyes as well, though dull and not as pretty as yours.
