Nyx's Pov
Alden kept his eyes on the road, and I leaned back slightly, wondering what he had to do with me. He had found me even before I was able to find him. Alden Black Lombardi. A ruthless mafia lord who killed with cruelty and didn't care about anything else other than what he wanted to do. Gary was supposed to lead me to him, but instead, he was killed and I was captured by this guy instead. So, obviously there was going to be a change of plans. The car ride felt endless, the city lights flickering like fleeting memories as they streaked past the windows. Yeah… Memories. They began to resurface in my head. Three years ago, I was captured by a mafia gang and sold to another gang. I was ten at that time, and I had to fight for my life amongst the other girls. Older, more ruthless girls who had been there for a very long time. Some of them had gotten pregnant, some of them had been killed off. The situation I was in was either you survive, or you die. A situation that most of us in this world found ourselves in. The gang I was sold to was called the Iron Claw and at that time, their cruelty knew no bounds. Women, to them, were not human beings and instead, were properties, tools to be discarded. I was thrown into a room with about fifty other girls who died one by one. The older girls quickly established dominance over us. One girl, Naomi, had tried to fight back. She refused to comply with their orders, screaming at them with a defiance that could have inspired us all if we weren’t so terrified. But that defiance cost her everything as they made an example out of her, dragging her into the courtyard one cold night. We were all forced to watch as they beat her to death, her screams echoing in my ears. Her blood stained the concrete, and I knew then that this place wasn’t just a prison, it was hell. It was my awakening. I survived by being invisible. I never drew attention to myself, keeping my head down and doing as I was told. But that didn’t mean I escaped their observation entirely. One of the leaders, a man named Victor, took a particular interest in me. His eyes were always on me, leering at me like I was some prize he was waiting to claim. One night, he cornered me in the back corridors of their hideout. I still remember the smell of cheap whiskey on his breath and the feel of his rough hands grabbing me. I fought back, scratching and kicking with every bit of strength I had, and somehow, I managed to grab a broken piece of glass from the ground. I didn’t hesitate. I drove it into his shoulder, the glass sinking deep into his flesh. His roar of pain echoed through the building, and I knew I was done for. But instead of killing me, Victor laughed. He yanked the glass out of his shoulder, blood dripping down his arm, and smiled like he had found his next toy. “You’ve got fire, little girl.” He said, his voice laced with malice, “I like that.” From that night on, he made my life a living hell. He didn’t kill me outright, no, that would have been too easy. He broke me down piece by piece, starving me, locking me in dark, suffocating rooms for days at a time, and forcing me to watch as he tormented the others. But that was his mistake. By keeping me locked up, but still in the midst of his men, I was able to observe how they behaved, how they fought, I learnt them all. So I began to plan my escape. They didn't have a lot of men in their gang, but due to their iron fists that they used to reign over us, we were scared of them, but fear can only go so far. I wasn’t the only one. There was an older girl, Helena, who had been there longer than most of us. She was ruthless, even to the other girls, but I could tell it was a survival mechanism. She didn’t trust anyone, not even me. But when I started whispering about escape plans in the darkness of our shared cell, she listened. “We’ll die trying.” She had said, her voice barely audible. “We’re dead already if we don’t.” I replied. From then on, we worked together in the shadows. Helena knew things I didn’t, she had been there longer and knew where the guards got lazy, where they hid their weapons. I had the fire, and she had the knowledge. The night we struck was the night Victor decided to make an example out of another girl. Her name was Lydia. She was barely seventeen, and she had tried to smuggle food for one of the younger girls. Victor dragged her into the courtyard, and the rest of us were forced to line up and watch. That was the moment Helena and I had been waiting for. While Victor and his lackeys were distracted, we moved. Helena slipped a sharpened piece of metal, stolen from a broken gate into my hand. My heart pounded as we crept toward the storage room where the guards kept their weapons. Inside, there were three men. They were supposed to be on watch, but they were laughing, playing cards, and passing a bottle of whiskey around. They didn’t hear us until it was too late.Nyx's Pov Helena struck first, her weapon slicing across one man’s throat in a blur of movement. The second man reached for his gun, but I was faster. I lunged at him, driving my blade into his chest. His eyes widened in shock as he crumpled to the floor. The third man tried to run, but Helena threw a knife she snatched from a dead guy, hitting him squarely in the back. He fell face-first, the bottle of whiskey shattering on his face. We armed ourselves quickly, grabbing as many weapons as we could carry. The chaos in the courtyard was our opportunity. Victor was too busy playing the role of executioner to notice us creeping behind the line of guards. “Now.” Helena whispered. We opened fire. The sound of gunshots echoed through the compound, and screams erupted as guards and prisoners alike scrambled for cover. Helena was ruthless, her shots precise and deadly. I wasn’t as skilled, but my anger made up for it. Every pull of the trigger was a release, every fallen guard a
Nyx's Pov “Hm.” Alden hummed lightly, reaching out to hold my wrist. He pulled me closer and then leaned down, wrapping his arms around the curve of my waist and with one strong movement, he pulled me closer to him. I stiffened for a moment, caught off guard by the sudden closeness. His eyes gleamed with something unreadable, but I could see the shift in his demeanor, a man who was never afraid, now calculating his next move.“Play along.” He whispered, so quietly it was barely a breath. Before I could question him, his voice rang out, loud.“Princess…” He said, the word dripping with affection, “You’re far too stubborn for your own good, but I wouldn’t have you any other way.”My eyes widened in realization, I caught on quickly and forced a smile, leaning into his chest.“You think flattery will get you anywhere, darling?” I said, my voice light and teasing, though my heart pounded in my chest. His lips curved into a smirk, his grip tightening around my waist. He was strong, too st
Nyx's Pov “Well… Um…” I stammered, the corner of my lips twitching at the sudden question, “I grew up with that habit. The thing is, as a child, my father owed a lot of debts from gambling and stuff like that. So many times, my mother and I were taken by loan sharks and those my father owed money to. I was able to figure out when someone was coming or hiding to get us despite how quiet they were. It's just an instinct that I grew up with.” Alden's eyes narrowed at me, but he didn't say a word, he still kept that infuriating smile on his lips. “You… Don't believe me?” I questioned softly, almost tearfully in fact, “If you don't believe me, then…” “Who said anything about not believing you, princess? I believe you, really.” Alden cut me off, giving me a closed eye smile that clearly said, ‘No, I don't believe you’. My heart sank. This guy would be hard to deal with… But nevertheless, I already knew that before coming here. I masked my thoughts with a tearful smile, scurrying backwa
Alden's Pov I stood outside the door for a moment, staring at the locks. I was debating on leaving them open, and not locking her up but I decided against it. Looking at her, it was clear that she was a kind of person who would get herself into a trouble. And in this place, it was very wavy to get yourself killed if you were an outsider. I still needed her, even if I wasn't even sure it was ‘her’ yet. But if it was ‘her’...“That girl…” I muttered under my breath, the faint stench of her vomit hitting my nose before I even reached the base of the stairs and I grimaced. I should have known what her reaction would be, but I had no idea it would leave a mess. Her trembling, tear-streaked face had almost been amusing, but the cleanup was decidedly less so.I stepped into the living room and let my eyes fall on the puddle of vomit on the floor, my frown deepened. With a sigh, I tilted my head back and called out into the shadows, a voice sharp and commanding. “Nine.” There was a moment
Nyx's Pov “Get up!” Someone screamed in my ear, I groaned, turning to my side. “Get the hell up!” Who the heck was screaming into my ears like that?! Didn't they know that someone was sleeping?! However, it seems like the patience of the person was over as I was jerked awake by a sharp blow to my back. My eyes flew open, adrenline coursing through my veins as my body reacted on instinct. My fist was halfway through the air, ready to strike when my mind screamed at me to stop. Undercover! Stay in character, you're undercover! Instead of hitting the person who hit me, I froze, my breathing ragged. As if on cue, my eyes welled up with tears. I sniffed, letting my bottom lip tremble as I turned to face the culprit. A woman stood over me, her arms crossed and a frown plastered on her face. She looked to be in her late forties, with sharp features and an equally sharp demeanor. Her dark hair was pulled into a severe bun, and her cold eyes bore into me with no hint of sympathy."Get u
Alden's Pov“Nyx!” I yelled her name when she suddenly fell from the staircase, rushing towards her to catch her before her head hit the ground. She fell into my arms, breathing heavily. Her face was pale and her whole body was shaking. “What the hell happened to you?!” I questioned harshly, picking her up. She weighed nothing, as light as a feather. Was she malnourished as well?! With huge movements, I stormed up the staircase, cradling her limp body in my arms. My jaw was clenched so tightly that it ached, and my mind raced with questions. How had she ended up in this state and who dared to push her to such extremes. When I reached her room, I pushed the door open with my shoulder. The sight that greeted me made my blood boil. Renata was lounging comfortably in a chair by the window, her feet propped up on a stool as if she owned the place. She popped a grape into her mouth and chewed loudly and obnoxiously. Without looking, she scoffed, "I hope you're not coming in here to laze
Nyx's Pov “Mhm…” I groaned in pain, opening my eyes to see Alden and someone else I had no idea who he was standing beside my bed. The both of them were talking, my eyes were ringing so it was quite hard to hear what they were saying, however, I could make out the words, ‘punish’, ‘Renata’. Were they going to punish Renata? That's not good, I needed her for my plan. If she was gone, then there was no one I was going to use anymore. I made another sound to alert them that I had woken up, and tried to get up from the bed but a sting of pain went through my shoulders. “You should not be standing up.” Alden saidz towering over me. He crossed his arms, his ruby eyes staring so intensely that I thought he was going to pull my soul out, however, I couldn't stop looking at his eyes. “They are really pretty.” I thought, still staring at him. “What's pretty?” Alden questioned. “Your eyes. They're really… pretty…” I trailed off, my eyes widening after realising what I said. Why did I say my
Note: There is sexual assault in this chapter. If this is a trigger for you, please you can skip this. Nyx's Pov “Let go of me!” I screamed at him, letting my broom fall to the ground as another one grabbed me roughly, this time, pressing my boobs with his calloused hands. I felt a wave of nausea washed through me but I swallowed it down forcefully. “Don't be like that, hm? What is a pretty thing like you doing, hm? Sweeping the ground? How about you come with me and serve me, you wouldn't have to do menial work like this anymore. I'll take care of you like the flower that you're supposed to be.” He said, bringing his face close to mine, his stinky breath fanning my face. I made a look of disgust, turning my head away from him. Three others gathered around me but the drug cartel did nothing, he was merely staring at me. “Let go of me! Let go!” I continued to struggle against them as they went further. Another placed his hands on my stomach, directly on top of my v-line. I gas
Nyx's Pov I clenched my fists, heat burning in my face as I realized everyone we passed was pretending not to see this. The bastards. The moment we reached his room, Alden kicked the door open, stepped inside, and, without warning, tossed me onto the bed. I let out a sharp breath as I landed, bouncing slightly against the plush mattress, "You...!"Before I could even sit up, Alden was already on me. His hands planted on either side of my head, caging me in. His weight loomed over mine, his face inches from mine.I swallowed. He wasn’t smirking anymore. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes, they were sharp, assessing."You really thought I wouldn’t notice?" His voice was low, but it sent a chill down my spine.I willed my heart to slow down, meeting his gaze head-on, "It worked, didn’t it?"His lips twitched, but the amusement didn’t reach his eyes, "You’re bold, I’ll give you that."I shrugged, ignoring the way my stomach twisted at his tone, "I do my best."Alden exhaled, slo
Nyx's Pov"A deal? What sort of deal?" Selene purred, curiosity showing itself in her eyes. Selene was the kind of person who could easily change allegiances as long as it suits her. She had no loyalty, typical of an assassin. Just the kind of person I needed to help me spy on Victor. "You will tell me everything I need to know about Victor and spy on him for me, in return, I'll get you out of here."Selene's smirk faltered for a moment, replaced by something unreadable. Then, she leaned back against the cold stone wall and let out a slow, deliberate exhale. "You don’t get it, Nyx." She muttered, "Victor won’t let me go. If he finds out I turned on him, I’ll be dead before I even see the sun again." I scoffed. "You? Afraid of Victor?" Her eyes darkened. "You should be, too." A flicker of unease crawled up my spine, but I pushed it down. Selene wasn’t wrong. Victor being alive—*somehow*—was already a problem. A problem I needed answers to. "You either rot in this cell, or yo
Nyx's Pov I cursed so loudly I was sure the entire damn mansion heard it. My blood was boiling, my fists clenched so tight I could feel my nails biting into my palms.“You fucking bastard. If you want to tell me, then tell me, stop beating around the bush!” I seethed before launching myself at him. My fist swung for his jaw, fast and precise, but Alden moved like a damn shado, fluid, effortless. He sidestepped, catching my wrist mid-air with ridiculous ease. I barely had time to register it before he twisted, forcing me off balance.Shit.I tried to pull back, but he was already a step ahead. In a blink, he maneuvered us, his arm slipping around my waist as he spun me. My back hit something solid, him. I sucked in a sharp breath as I realized the position he had trapped me in. My wrist was still in his grasp, his other hand pressed lightly to my lower back, keeping me pinned to his body. And holy hell, he was warm.I froze, my brain short-circuiting for a second.“You’re awfully aggr
Nyx's Pov Alden came back to the room a few hours later, I could see that he had changed his clothes and his expression had turned serious. He was here for answers then. I threw my legs off the bed, crossing them as I stared at him with a smile, “So? What do you want to know?” “Disregarding the fact that I was the one who brought you here, you must have had a mission regarding me, hm?” “Yup.” “And what was the mission?” “To kill you and bring in whatever information that I was able to take from you.” I answered dutifully. His eyes narrowed a bit, “And who sent you on that mission?” His question made me freeze. That's right… Who sent me on this mission in the first place? I mean Helena was the one who asked me to go on this mission but who sent out the mission first? Why had I never questioned this and instead, went along with what Helena had told me. I must have been so used to doing that, that I didn't even question it so if there was one person who knew who the sender of the
Nyx's Pov Alden didn’t stop until we reached his room. The door slammed shut behind us, sealing me in with him. His movements were swift, methodical, as he placed me on the bed like I was some fragile thing. I wasn’t. “I don’t need a damn nurse.” I muttered, trying to sit up, but he placed a firm hand on my shoulder, pushing me back down. “Shut up.” He said flatly, moving toward the bathroom. I heard the sound of cabinets opening, glass bottles clinking together before he returned with a first aid kit. He dropped it on the nightstand, then turned to me, “Take off your clothes.” I blinked, then huffed a laugh, “Excuse me?” His gaze was unreadable, his voice steady, “You’re bleeding. I need to see the wound.” I crossed my arms, ignoring the way pain lanced through my side, “Not happening.” Alden exhaled through his nose, clearly out of patience. The next thing I knew, his fingers gripped the hem of the blood-soaked shirt I wore, and before I could react, he yanked it ov
Nyx's Pov The moment the bullets started flying, Selene did something I didn’t expect, she tossed her gun to the ground. I barely had a second to process it before she lunged at me, fists swinging. Oh, she wanted to do this the old-fashioned way? Fine. I sidestepped her first punch, letting it graze past my face before countering with a sharp elbow to her ribs. Selene grunted but recovered fast, spinning and aiming a kick at my head. I ducked, shifting my weight and sweeping her legs out from under her. She hit the ground with a growl, but instead of staying down, she rolled and sprang back up, her eye burning with fury. “I’ve been waiting for this.” She spat, wiping a smear of blood from her lips, “A rematch between the both of us. I remember we did this a long time ago before you got locked up by Victor.”I cracked my neck, loosening my stance, “Then you should’ve trained harder. You have gotten rusty, corn face.” Selene charged again, feinting left before slamming her fi
Nyx's Pov I gulped. Dangerous... This man was fucking dangerous for my heart. I shifted back, clearing my throat as I slapped his hands away from a collar of the shirt. "Ahem! Anyways you said something about Renata being loud mouthed, what did you mean by that?" I finally asked the question of I came downstairs for in the first place. Alden shrugged, his expression shifting from teasing to something colder, more calculating, "She talked too much."I frowned, "And?"He let out a slow sigh, rolling his neck as if the conversation bored him, "Renata sold out information about this mansion to the wrong people. That’s how the assassins knew where the cameras were and what the blind spots were."I blinked, "You're saying she was a traitor?" That Renata who was scared of me merely staring at her? That Renata was a traitor? Woah... I couldn't have expected this. Not at all. Alden smirked, but there was no amusement in it, "I'm saying she made a bad deal. She thought she could sell me out
Nyx's Pov When he finished dressing, I stared at him, the blanket still covering half my face. I was blushing, I knew that, and I didn't want to let him see me blushing. But I was quite curious about something. "Why are you suddenly hiring maids after Renata died? Aren't you scared that someone else might get killed?" I asked innocently. Alden glanced at me for a second with his eyes literally saying, 'Why should I care?'I cleared my throat, "I mean... With what happened before, it's almost inevitable that someone else would get sent here and then she'd just die. She's just a normal human like me." I whispered, pretending to feel down. "She knew what she was signing up for before she came here. Also, if she's not as loud mouthed as Renata, she should be se to surviving for quite a while." He shrugged, acting like we were merely talking about the weather. But wait..."Loud mouthed as Renata? What do you mean?" I sat up instantly, letting the sheets fall to my waist as I stared at
Nyx's Pov Helena exhaled through her nose, acknowledging the point, “Vasquez is sharp, but he’s not invincible. He can’t monitor everything at once. If we’re careful, casual, we can pull this off.”I hesitated. This plan could either work perfectly or blow up in our faces. If Alden or Vasquez even suspected Helena was more than just a maid, we’d both be screwed. As if reading my thoughts, Helena leaned in slightly, “Look, Nyx. We don’t have many options. Victor is out there, and he’s watching. We need intel, and I need to stay close to you. This is the best way.”I ran a hand through my hair, exhaling sharply, “Fine.”Her grin was immediate, “I knew you’d see reason.”I shot her a glare, “But if this backfires, I’m blaming you.”She laughed, standing up, “That’s fair.”I watched as she smoothed down her uniform, her expression shifting back into her usual mask of cool confidence, “Alright, darling. Time for me to go do actual work before someone starts wondering where I am.”I smirke
