"Nurse!... Nurse, where is my father?" Marie asked as soon as she burst into the hospital at a speed that lightning would envy.
Everyone in the hospital turned to stare at her as she ran as fast as her legs could carry her, her sneakers thudding on the tiled floor and her ponytail swinging at her back.
Marie was still in her Cafe uniform and had even forgotten to take off her apron; she had quickly left her job as a waitress as soon as she got a call from the hospital that her father had been rushed over.
She was going to get in trouble no doubt but she needed to see her father, her heart was beating madly against the wall of her chest as she ran, tears stinging at the side of her eyes.
Just then, the doctor came out from the theater, pulling his nose mask from his face. She rushed to him, probably startling him.
"Doctor, where is my dad? What happened?" She asked, pulling his hands.
"Calm down, you must be Miss Mariagoretti Ambrose." He asked.
Marie nodded quickly, impatiently, "Yes, yes. That's me. I'm here to see my dad. Where is he? Is he okay?"
"Calm down, miss, "The doctor said, "Please, follow me to my office"
Marie quickly followed him down the corridor to his office, and she sat down uneasily as if she were made to sit on hot coals.
"Look, Marie. Your father is in a very critical condition, he was rushed down here after he had another seizure" The doctor told her, his life was in danger, "I'm afraid we need to carry out an operation for him immediately, miss, else you might lose your father"
Tears rushed down Marie's cheeks. An operation? Had it gotten so bad that her father would have to need an operation? She had spent all her earnings from the cafe to buy her father's drugs and made sure he ate the right food according to his nutritionist who she also had to pay.
Marie felt as if the earth was turning its bad side. Why was all this happening to her? She sniffed and looked up at the doctor, who had a remorseful look on his face.
"Okay, so how much are we looking at?" Marie asked him, fingers crossed.
The doctor sighed deeply, "The whole cost of his surgery is a hundred thousand dollars, miss, and remember, it had to be carried out as soon as possible"
The doctor's words kept ringing in her ears even after she had excused herself from his office, promising to gather the money in three days as he had advised.
It was impossible to do so, it was just the beginning of the month and there was no way her grumpy employer would pay her for the month, tears slipped down her cheeks.
She was allowed into her father's room and the constant beeping of the life machine filled her ears, her heart tightened in pain at the sight of him on the bed asleep.
Marie walked soundlessly to him and took his hand in hers, "I promise to get the money for your operation no matter what it takes, Dad"
She lowered her head to his hand and tears poured down her cheeks, her shoulder shaking in her sob, "Hold on tight, Dad. I'd get you out of this bed in no time"
Marie walked absent-mindedly out of the hospital, she didn't mind the glances that the passers-by threw at her as she walked past, she felt tired and in pain.
There was just so much going through her mind, so much she couldn't handle. She wiped her face quickly with the back of her hand but tears just kept on strolling down her face.
Her heart was heavy, so heavy as if placed on a heavy scale. Marie kept walking confusedly, the soles of her sneakers making a soft thud against the sidewalk, there was too much on her head but there was no one to pour out her problems to.
No one she could turn to for help, the truth was that no one could help, was it her boss back at the cafe? The thought of going to help for help itself sounded so lame and absurd, it could only happen in her imagination.
She couldn't just sit back, do nothing, and watch her father, the only family she had left die. Maria boarded a bus and sat down heavily at the back, she looked out of the window and allowed her tears to cascade down her cheeks.
"Where the hell have you been?" Ri, her friend, rushed to her and dragged her to the back of the counter as soon as she walked into the cafe.
Marie sat down heavily on one of the cafe stools, her face stained with tears and her eyes swollen. She looked down at her palm absent-mindedly and took a deep breath.
"I had to cover up for you; otherwise, Mr. Winchester would have noticed you were away and fired you in a blink," Ri told her out of breath. Her voice softened as she saw the dull look on her friend's face. "What happened, Marie?"
Marie sighed, her shoulders slumping down as she did, her face was a portrait of despair as she spoke up.
"My dad...he had another seizure and was rushed to the hospital," Marie said slowly.
Ri gasped audibly, "Oh my God, I'm ...I'm so sorry, Marie. I didn't know, so what would you do? What did the doctor say?"
Marie sighed heavily, "He needs to undergo an operation and he needs a hundred thousand dollars in three days else I will lose him"
Ri gasped again, louder than the last and her hands flew to her mouth, "How the hell can you raise a hundred thousand dollars in just three days? That's...that's impossible "
"I know, "Marie said quietly, "I don't know what to do, I'm just tired of everything and I can't lose my dad, he's the only one I've got left after my mum and sister died in that fatal accident "
Ri sighed and lowered to her, placing her hand on her shoulders, "Come on, Marie. You are not going to lose your dad and you should let go of those painful memories, it happened a long time ago"
"So what do I do now?" Marie looked up at her friend, a tear dropping from her eyes.
Ri straightened up and seemed to think for a few seconds then she looked down at Marie who had l of going to help for help itself sounded so lame and absurd, it could only happen in her imagination.
She couldn't just sit back, do nothing, and watch her father, the only family she had left die. Maria boarded a bus and sat down heavily at the back, she looked out of the window and allowed her tears to cascade down her cheeks.

Marie logged in to the website and read their terms and conditions, she was surprised to know that they were given loans without taking any interest and the borrower can be given a space of a year or two to pay up."Wow," Marie muttered to herself, "Could this be real or legit?"Marie thanked Ri and after the day's work, she changed into her clothes and took her scooter, she decided to stop by her fiancé’s apartment to tell him how her day had gone. The day had stretched out to a dull evening as she pulled up in front of his apartment, Marie pulled off her helmet and sighed, pushing her hair out of her face. She took out her spare key and got the door open, his house was unusually quiet for the fact that Mark was a music freak and always found a way to play loud pop music even after the old Chinese landlord's warnings.Marie guessed he might be asleep, she climbed up the stairs and headed for his bedroom and that was when she heard a soft moaning sound from his room.Marie stopped in
Marie stepped back, hit by surprise and confusion, she stared blankly at Aaron Sanchez, that same son of a filthy rich billionaire who she dated for two years and who broke up with her right before everyone."You" Marie spat, her chest heaving up and down as her heartbeat increased its pace."Yes, me," Aaron said, "It's nice to finally see you again, Mariagoretti"Marie hated the name especially as it was coming from him, it brought back the painful memories of how he dumped her on her birthday without an explanation. How the whole school mocked and made fun of her because they had always envied her for being the girlfriend of the richest and most handsome guy in school.Wasn't it just enough predicament for one day, just today, her dad was rushed to the hospital, she found out that her best friend was screwing her fiancé, Mark called off the engagement and now this?"It's Marie, okay? Just call me that" Marie snapped and looked around the exquisite building, "I-is this yours?"Aaron
Marie wiped her face quickly, "Yes?"And then a smile spread across the doctor's face as if reading her thoughts, he said.It was successful, miss. “Your father would be fine now,” you will be allowed to see him in a minute.Marie's heart swelled with joy as she eased open the door to her father's ward after a meeting of impatient waiting. The beeping of the life machine and the smell of antiseptics filled her nose. She walked soundlessly to the bed where he lay tired and sat on the chair beside it, “She took his hand in hers and kissed it.”Richard's eyes fluttered open, and he smiled upon seeing his daughter," You are here?"Marie nodded. She looked up at him, and tears flooded her eyes—tears of joy and of something else she couldn't place. She was happy to see him healthy again and, most importantly, alive."Yes, Dad. How do you feel now?" She asked, smiling.Richard took a deep breath and managed a weak smile, "Alive.""I'm glad you are okay, Dad. You got me so worried," Marie tol
Marie stared blankly at him for a moment before getting in, she sat down heavily beside him and the scent of his expensive perfume drifted into her nostrils."What happened? You look pale?" He asked her. Marie sniffed and looked out of the tinted window, "What do you care?"Aaron took a deep breath, "I care so much about you, Mariagoretti, I do"Her head shot back at him, her eyes flashing with much pain and hurt and he could see the tears that played at the side of her eyes."You dumped me, Aaron. You trashed me like I was some used diaper you have no use for anymore" Marie said, her voice rising with each word."Look, Marie, I know that there is no explanation for what I did, what I did was selfish and I'm sorry but…"He stared at her and inhaled,"....I still love you...so much"Marie lowered her head, she was breathing heavily now as the memories came crawling right up her chest and made it hard to breathe, hard to think."I can't love you, Aaron. Look at you, you are rich and powe
The hospital room was tense as Aaron's bold words lingered in the air. Marie stood still, her eyes shifting between her father and Aaron. Normally quick to think, her mind was now a jumble of confusing thoughts. She couldn’t comprehend how she found herself in this situation. Aaron had burst into her life like a whirlwind, and now he seemed to control everything. With his charming demeanor, Aaron moved closer, touching her shoulder lightly to reinforce his hold on her. "It’s been a while now," he said smoothly, his voice calm and steady. "I’ve taken care of all the expenses, ensuring Marie doesn’t have to worry. She means everything to me... By the way, I'm Aaron Sanchez, the CEO of Edmount Corporation and the heir to the famous Sanchez Empirical."Her father looked lost for words "I... I don't know how to show my gratitude. Thank you, Aaron. I didn’t realize..." His voice trailed off, and his gratitude was evident.Aaron flashed a well-practiced smile that radiated charm. "You don’t
Marie’s heart felt heavy as she drove her father home. The weight of the situation pressed down on her, each mile feeling like an eternity. She wanted to scream, to tell her father everything—about Aaron’s manipulation, the lies, the pressure. But how could she? Her father had been through so much already, and now, to add to that, she had no idea how to explain what was happening to her."I'll make you something to eat, Dad," She said quickly as they got home.Just then, a loud knock echoed from the front. Her heart quickened and she moved closer to the door, with a deep sigh, she opened the door, hoping it wasn't who she thought it would be.Her eyes widened in surprise as she stared at the group of beautiful ladies standing before her, they were holding huge makeup bags while the two pretty brunettes at the back held the sides of a clothes trolley with wedding gowns hanging from its rack. Three sleek cars were parked outside with tinted windows.Aaron came out slowly from one of them
Marie sat on her bed, looking at the wardrobe across the room. And the wedding dress just hung there like a ghostly sign of everything that was out of her control. The cloth was soft and it was white and sheer in color, and with lace work barely visible in the dim light of the lamp. It was supposed to mean a new start, love, and commitment. To Marie, it was a chain, a thing that confined her to a life she had not yet desired and to a man she did not have affection for.The makeup artists had finally left her alone, giving her sufficient time to think all by herself. She was scrutinized in the mirror, and her cheeks shone, her eyes were wide and painted to perfection. At first, she almost failed to realize who the woman was. She did not see her reflection in the mirror; she saw someone else instead, a stranger who looked like her but was not; a clone conditioned and groomed for a fake life. The next day, she had to come forward to a congregation, proclaim things she never intended, wea
Her Father tapped lightly on the door. “Marie? Are you ready, sweetheart?”Marie took a deep breath. She was dressed in her beautiful wedding dress and she looked in the mirror for the last time. She thought to herself, saying out loud ‘As ready as I’ll ever be.’ Looking at the door, she got up and swung it open to find her father on the other side looking pleased.“Wow, Marie,” he said, and this has never changed and he could only feel emotion in his throat. “You look… You look like a princess. Your mother should have been proud of you.”She just nodded agreeing, and tried to smile but the smile did not touch her eyes at all. “Thanks, Dad.”He stretched out for her hand and it was warm, tender, and strong. “Come on, sweetheart. Let’s go. It’s time.”So gripping hand in hand and taking a long hallway, the heart of Marie began to beat faster. The noise was heard from downstairs, people speaking, the murmur like bees buzzing, the expectation of the event of the day. The house was so qui
Marie held the file to her chest with trembling hands. Her mind whirled with anger, incredulity and fear as her heart hammered against her ribs. She didn't give a damn.“Hey sweetheart, as smooth as ever Aaron said as soon as he entered the room, greeting her.Marie stayed put. Instead, with all the rage raging inside her, she slammed the file against his chest after lifting it. It hit with a sharp, loud thud.“Explain this,” she snapped before Aaron could even react. Confusion knitted his brows as he grabbed the file out of instinct. He flipped it open while glancing down at it. Then, his body froze. His voice was low and too controlled as he asked, “Where did you get this?”She swore, “That's what you have to say? Not a single attempt to tell me this isn't true? Not a single word to deny it?”Aaron let out a slow breath and closed the file. “Marie—”She interrupted him with a raised voice, saying, “No! Don’t ‘Marie’ me! Aaron, I want the truth. Everything. Now.”Aaron's jaw tighten
When Marie entered the house, it was still as quiet as before. A tiny chill went down her spine in the silence. It always seemed like a place with secrets, and she was resolved to find one today. With caution, she made her way to Howard's study, her bare feet making no sound on the cool floor. She was positive that Howard wasn't at home. Anger-fueled, he had stormed out earlier. Now was her opportunity. She went to the door, but it was locked. The heart of Marie skipped a beat. That was not what she had anticipated. She hesitated for a moment. Would she be caught by someone if she turned around? No. I need to locate that image. With her thoughts racing, she took a step back and bit her lip. Where would Howard store the key? And then she realised. His chamber. She turned and rushed up the grand staircase without another second's hesitation. Her heart raced with each creak of the ancient wooden steps. She moved swiftly but carefully looked around corners to make sure no one was observi
Marie ran.She was not able to breathe, no matter how hard she tried to hold on to something; the world around her was blurry. The ground beneath her feet seemed to go on forever; it was neither warm nor cold, nor was it soft or hard. However, she was aware that she needed to continue running. Her chest rose and fell with urgency as she held her breath in sharp gasps. The wind had stopped. There is no sound. Just a spooky emptiness that caused her chest to constrict uneasily. Then—. A voice. Soft. Muttering. Weak. Marie. . . . Pulse thumping against her ribs, she skidded to a stop. Her gaze swept over the shifting mist as she turned. The quiet pressed against her ears. Then—. Marie heard the murmur once more. Closer this time. She was gasping for air. At her sides, she balled her fingers into fists. Like a chilly breath against the back of her neck, the voice, familiar but far away, sent a weird sensation racing through her. Her throat was dry as she swallowed hard. As though the air
Aaron, whose whole body was glowing with rage, barged into their bedroom. His shoulders were tense, his feet were heavy, and he raked a frustrated hand through his hair. Closing the door behind him, Marie followed in silence.Something raw flickered in his dark, intense eyes, making Marie’s stomach knot. After a moment of hesitation, Marie moved closer. “Aaron. . . .” With a sharp exhale, he turned to her. His jaw was tight, his dark eyes blazing with anger. “He was without right,” he snarled. “He has no damn right to treat you that way.” “Please, Aaron—” “I ought to have done more,” he interrupted, his tone full of annoyance. “The instant he raised his voice toward you, I ought to have intervened.”Marie tried to calm him before his rage overtook him by gently reminding him, “You did” in a softer tone.Aaron's laughter was sour. “Not enough.” He paced the room like a confined animal while shaking his head. “I wasn't expecting him to say it aloud, but I knew he would react this way
Marie gripped the photo with shaking fingers. As she struggled to process what she was seeing, she breathed in sharp, short gasps. This is totally strange. There should be no such thing. How manage? She asked herselfThen—. The door flew open. Marie’s heart hit her ribs as she jolted. Howard entered, engulfing the room with his massive frame that blocked the doorway. The maids huddled together in fright. They were aware. They felt terror. Marie had hardly time to respond. Between her feet the picture fluttered to the floor as it slipped from her shaking fingers."What the hell are you doing here?” He yelled.Marie swallowed. “I was just—" “You were just what?” His fists were clenched at his sides, but his voice remained uncannily composed.Marie made herself talk. “I was only tidying up.” Howard's eyes strayed to the cloth she was still holding. His jaw muscle twitches. “Cleaning?” he asked again incredulously.Marie nodded and took a deep breath. Howard, however, was not persuade
Strangely, the mansion was silent.Marie was reading a magazine in the living room when her thoughts drifted. When she woke up, the bed was empty because Aaron had left early for the office. She usually spends the morning curled up in his arms with soft sheets, but today was different. Lonely. With a sigh, she threw the magazine on the coffee table. There was nothing to do. Her bones began to grow restless. Although she could have gone for a walk, she didn't enjoy the idea of being by herself in the expansive estate. Rather, she got up and walked toward the main hall, her bare feet softly tapping the marble floor. As she passed the open archway leading to the grand foyer, she noticed movement. A couple of maids were busy cleaning the staircase railing and polishing the furniture. Marie came over to them with a smile. “Do you require any assistance?”The maids' eyes widened as they turned to her in shock. A short woman with graying hair gave a quick shake of her head. “Oh no, Mrs. Sa
Aaron’s fingers lightly touched her smooth skin as he moved his hands down Marie's bare arms.Marie's voice was shaking as she uttered his name in a whisper, “Aaron.”There was a lot of uncertainty and longing in the sound. Aaron looked into her worried eyes with his dark ones. He could see the vulnerability that she was trying so hard to conceal, the fear that was still present behind her eyes. Her heart pounded, but this time it wasn’t out of fear. Something else—something more profound—occurred inside her whenever he was near. “I have always been scared. For a very long time, even before the nightmares, I was afraid.”As if he could protect her from all pain and anxiety, Aaron’s eyes grew softer, and he bent down to plant a kiss on the top of her forehead. “I understand,” he said in a whisper. “Marie, I understand. But you no longer need to bear it alone. I'm always here for you."His words were so genuine that they made her breath catch in her throat. She found comfort in the war
It was a suffocating dream for Marie. Her bare feet started to sink into the muddy ground as she ran through a pitch-black forest. She was caught by strong invisible hands that dragged her back and into the abyss. She snapped out of it. She was surrounded by warm arms from behind before she could even regulate her breathing. Aaron pressed his chest against her back and whispered “Shh…” against her ear. “You are safe. I've got you.”Eventually, Marie's tense body relaxed as he pulled her closer, his strong arms enclosing her and shielding her from the aftereffects of her nightmare. She nestled her face into his bare chest as she turned in his arms, inhaling his reassuringly fresh masculine aroma. She mumbled her voice trembling, “It felt so real.” Her fingers lightly touched his skin as she held onto him even more. “It felt like my whole being was being consumed.” As Aaron gave her back soothing strokes, his breathing remained steady. He said in a steady, quiet voice, “It was only a
Howard grabbed the steering wheel and got into his car, but he didn't turn on the engine. His stomach roiling with anxiety, he continued to stare at the house.Howard had acquaintances. He had been dealing with criminals, con artists and liars for years. The man at the door had all the telltale symptoms of someone hiding something: his forced casualness in speech, his stiff posture and the way his eyes darted away too quickly. He was making a false statement. Exhaling, Howard drummed his fingers on the dashboard. “What on earth went wrong here?” He grabbed his phone and quickly browsed through his contacts.A short while later, he hit the call button. After two rings, a recognisable voice answered. “Yes?” Howard was uninterested in polite conversation. “Tell me. How on earth did you make this so bad?” The pause. Then a sigh. “What do you mean by that?” Howard tightened his jaw. “I rapped on the door. Richard was gone according to the man who answered, left, departed silently.”One
