Marie logged in to the website and read their terms and conditions, she was surprised to know that they were given loans without taking any interest and the borrower can be given a space of a year or two to pay up.
"Wow," Marie muttered to herself, "Could this be real or legit?"
Marie thanked Ri and after the day's work, she changed into her clothes and took her scooter, she decided to stop by her fiancé’s apartment to tell him how her day had gone.
The day had stretched out to a dull evening as she pulled up in front of his apartment, Marie pulled off her helmet and sighed, pushing her hair out of her face.
She took out her spare key and got the door open, his house was unusually quiet for the fact that Mark was a music freak and always found a way to play loud pop music even after the old Chinese landlord's warnings.
Marie guessed he might be asleep, she climbed up the stairs and headed for his bedroom and that was when she heard a soft moaning sound from his room.
Marie stopped in her tracks and stared at the slightly open door, her heart tightened as she listened to the sound of Mark making out with another lady.
Tears and hot tears slipped down her cheeks as she walked slowly into his room and pushed the door open to see him in his tangled sheets on a lady.
Mark jerked away at the sound of the door opening with a creak and then Marie felt her heart scattering as her eyes fell on someone she would have sworn to never do a thing as such to her.
Ri, her best friend, straightened up from beneath Mark and pulled the sheets up to her chest, her hair was messy and she looked surprised.
Mark quickly got to his knees on the bed and pulled his boxer shorts up properly, his face was a mask of fear and surprise.
"Marie, babe. It's not what you think." He said quickly.
Tears pulled up in Marie's eyes as she stared at Ri in total shock, Ri was her best friend, her childhood friend. She would never have believed that she could do something such as screwing with her fiancé behind her back.
"Ri...h-how could you?" Marie asked, her lips trembling.
Ri said nothing, instead the look in her eyes made her doubt if she was truly her friend, the same friend she had left to return home back in the Cafe.
The same Ri she had told all her secrets and fears and the same person that had given her advice and had been so helpful to her.
"Come on, Marie," Ri said, smiling, "Don't act like you are that hurt, we always shared things, didn't we? I guess I decided to share him with you"
Marie's eyes slipped to Mark who had his hands on his head, he raked his fingers through his hair and sighed.
"I was going to tell you, Marie. I was going to call off the engagement, Ri has always been the one I love and we had agreed to get married in her hometown" Mark said, trying not to meet her gaze.
Marie felt like staggering, the weight of what she was hearing pushing her so hard and slamming across her chest.
"W-what?" She whispered.
Ri moved up to Mark, wrapped her arms around him, and pressed herself against him. She planted a kiss on his bare shoulder and looked up at her with a smirk on her face.
" It's not as bad as you think, Marie. I'm sure you will find someone else, someone who can stand you" She cooed.
"How could you do this to me, Ri? You were supposed to be my friend, "Marie whispered.
"Oops," Ri smiled.
"You are so vicious "Marie cried again, she slipped the ring out of her finger and threw it at them, and Ri laughed heartily.
Mark's jaw tightened now, "Fine, this is what I had always wanted, just leave, okay? We're done"
Marie turned around and ran out of the room, tears pouring down her eyes as she ran down the stairs and burst outside his apartment.
She threw the spare key to his apartment at the door and got into her scooter, she started it and sped up into the road, her eyes clouded with tears and her hands tightened on the hand pedals.
But instead of driving home, Marie drove to the loan company whose address she had memorized. She had less than two days to get the money for her father's surgery so she was going to think about it now and maybe cry later about being dumped.
It was probably 6 pm and Marie prayed she would make it on time since she was quite sure the company closed late, Marie blinked back her tears and drove to the company.
Her scooter glided to a halt in front of a magnificent skyscraper and she turned off her engine and sprinted up the tier of steps that led into it.
Luckily enough, she met the receptionist who was just about packing up for the day. The lady gave her a surprised look as she ran to the counter.
"Hello, hello...please I need to see your boss, it's really urgent," Marie said hurriedly.
"I'm sorry, Miss but we are closer for the day. Why don't you come back tomorrow?" She asked.
Marie grabbed the receptionist's hand quickly, "You don't understand, my father needs the money so bad, if you could just let me see your boss, please I beg you. I applied for a meeting with your boss earlier today but I couldn't make it... please, it's important"
Marie was still pleading with the receptionist and didn't know as footsteps sounded behind them, the receptionist looked up quickly and snatched her hand.
"Mr. Sanchez, t-the young lady...I t-told her to leave" The receptionist stammered.
Marie turned slowly and her eyes started from the legs of whoever was standing behind her, up to his suited frame and finally, her eyes came to rest on his face and it widened in shock.
She recognized him…
Aaron Sanchez, CEO of Edmount Cooperation and her former university lover stared at her, a smirk rose up his lips and his eyes went down her frame.
"Hello, Mariagoretti Ambrose," He said lazily, "I have long awaited you"
Marie stepped back, hit by surprise and confusion, she stared blankly at Aaron Sanchez, that same son of a filthy rich billionaire who she dated for two years and who broke up with her right before everyone."You" Marie spat, her chest heaving up and down as her heartbeat increased its pace."Yes, me," Aaron said, "It's nice to finally see you again, Mariagoretti"Marie hated the name especially as it was coming from him, it brought back the painful memories of how he dumped her on her birthday without an explanation. How the whole school mocked and made fun of her because they had always envied her for being the girlfriend of the richest and most handsome guy in school.Wasn't it just enough predicament for one day, just today, her dad was rushed to the hospital, she found out that her best friend was screwing her fiancé, Mark called off the engagement and now this?"It's Marie, okay? Just call me that" Marie snapped and looked around the exquisite building, "I-is this yours?"Aaron
Marie wiped her face quickly, "Yes?"And then a smile spread across the doctor's face as if reading her thoughts, he said.It was successful, miss. “Your father would be fine now,” you will be allowed to see him in a minute.Marie's heart swelled with joy as she eased open the door to her father's ward after a meeting of impatient waiting. The beeping of the life machine and the smell of antiseptics filled her nose. She walked soundlessly to the bed where he lay tired and sat on the chair beside it, “She took his hand in hers and kissed it.”Richard's eyes fluttered open, and he smiled upon seeing his daughter," You are here?"Marie nodded. She looked up at him, and tears flooded her eyes—tears of joy and of something else she couldn't place. She was happy to see him healthy again and, most importantly, alive."Yes, Dad. How do you feel now?" She asked, smiling.Richard took a deep breath and managed a weak smile, "Alive.""I'm glad you are okay, Dad. You got me so worried," Marie tol
Marie stared blankly at him for a moment before getting in, she sat down heavily beside him and the scent of his expensive perfume drifted into her nostrils."What happened? You look pale?" He asked her. Marie sniffed and looked out of the tinted window, "What do you care?"Aaron took a deep breath, "I care so much about you, Mariagoretti, I do"Her head shot back at him, her eyes flashing with much pain and hurt and he could see the tears that played at the side of her eyes."You dumped me, Aaron. You trashed me like I was some used diaper you have no use for anymore" Marie said, her voice rising with each word."Look, Marie, I know that there is no explanation for what I did, what I did was selfish and I'm sorry but…"He stared at her and inhaled,"....I still love you...so much"Marie lowered her head, she was breathing heavily now as the memories came crawling right up her chest and made it hard to breathe, hard to think."I can't love you, Aaron. Look at you, you are rich and powe
The hospital room was tense as Aaron's bold words lingered in the air. Marie stood still, her eyes shifting between her father and Aaron. Normally quick to think, her mind was now a jumble of confusing thoughts. She couldn’t comprehend how she found herself in this situation. Aaron had burst into her life like a whirlwind, and now he seemed to control everything. With his charming demeanor, Aaron moved closer, touching her shoulder lightly to reinforce his hold on her. "It’s been a while now," he said smoothly, his voice calm and steady. "I’ve taken care of all the expenses, ensuring Marie doesn’t have to worry. She means everything to me... By the way, I'm Aaron Sanchez, the CEO of Edmount Corporation and the heir to the famous Sanchez Empirical."Her father looked lost for words "I... I don't know how to show my gratitude. Thank you, Aaron. I didn’t realize..." His voice trailed off, and his gratitude was evident.Aaron flashed a well-practiced smile that radiated charm. "You don’t
Marie’s heart felt heavy as she drove her father home. The weight of the situation pressed down on her, each mile feeling like an eternity. She wanted to scream, to tell her father everything—about Aaron’s manipulation, the lies, the pressure. But how could she? Her father had been through so much already, and now, to add to that, she had no idea how to explain what was happening to her."I'll make you something to eat, Dad," She said quickly as they got home.Just then, a loud knock echoed from the front. Her heart quickened and she moved closer to the door, with a deep sigh, she opened the door, hoping it wasn't who she thought it would be.Her eyes widened in surprise as she stared at the group of beautiful ladies standing before her, they were holding huge makeup bags while the two pretty brunettes at the back held the sides of a clothes trolley with wedding gowns hanging from its rack. Three sleek cars were parked outside with tinted windows.Aaron came out slowly from one of them
Marie sat on her bed, looking at the wardrobe across the room. And the wedding dress just hung there like a ghostly sign of everything that was out of her control. The cloth was soft and it was white and sheer in color, and with lace work barely visible in the dim light of the lamp. It was supposed to mean a new start, love, and commitment. To Marie, it was a chain, a thing that confined her to a life she had not yet desired and to a man she did not have affection for.The makeup artists had finally left her alone, giving her sufficient time to think all by herself. She was scrutinized in the mirror, and her cheeks shone, her eyes were wide and painted to perfection. At first, she almost failed to realize who the woman was. She did not see her reflection in the mirror; she saw someone else instead, a stranger who looked like her but was not; a clone conditioned and groomed for a fake life. The next day, she had to come forward to a congregation, proclaim things she never intended, wea
Her Father tapped lightly on the door. “Marie? Are you ready, sweetheart?”Marie took a deep breath. She was dressed in her beautiful wedding dress and she looked in the mirror for the last time. She thought to herself, saying out loud ‘As ready as I’ll ever be.’ Looking at the door, she got up and swung it open to find her father on the other side looking pleased.“Wow, Marie,” he said, and this has never changed and he could only feel emotion in his throat. “You look… You look like a princess. Your mother should have been proud of you.”She just nodded agreeing, and tried to smile but the smile did not touch her eyes at all. “Thanks, Dad.”He stretched out for her hand and it was warm, tender, and strong. “Come on, sweetheart. Let’s go. It’s time.”So gripping hand in hand and taking a long hallway, the heart of Marie began to beat faster. The noise was heard from downstairs, people speaking, the murmur like bees buzzing, the expectation of the event of the day. The house was so qui
Their eyes locked and she looked away quickly, feeling tiny as if she had been dominated by him. Their features were stern and impassive, and Sinclair had a positively evil look in his eyes.Marie’s stomach twisted. She still did not know what his identity was, but the feeling that went through her when she met him was fearful.“Hello, father.” There was no love, no care. Apart from this, he was formal as if she made him uneasy. She looked at Aaron, wondering how he felt at this point, but he seemed not to hesitate—a vein beat in his temple and his stare was at the floor, away from his father. Marie could easily sense that this was not a joyful reunion even though the characters hadnot spoken a word. The man – Aaron’s father – smiled then, a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. What was more, he looked like a giant who was slowly advancing toward them, his movements as calculated as those of a programmed automaton.‘Congratulations,’ he told them both but looked at Marie when he sp
Howard sat alone in his office, the heavy silence surrounding him. His huge desk, cluttered with papers and a tumbler of whisky, appeared to feature the oppressive environment. He became misplaced in notion, staring into space, his thoughts racing through the activities of the past few days. His arms tightened around the glass, his grip tight with frustration. He had suspected for some time that something had changed. He had watched his son, seen the way Aaron had acted around Marie, and it didn’t sit down properly with him. There was something about her that didn’t appear proper. And that worried him.His son had usually been focused, determined, and particular. But with Marie within the image, Aaron regarded it as distracted, remote. He had to understand more. That’s whilst Howard had come up with the plan. He had arranged for the staged twist of fate, the truck incident. It became speculated to be a manner to test Marie, to peer how she could react below pressure, to look if she tu
Marie and Aaron lay in each other's arms, and the world outside the room appeared some distance away. He wrapped his arms around her as if not wanting to ever let her go, and she pressed herself against him.For the first time in a long time, she felt at peace. She felt that the burden of the whole world which has been troubling her have been lifted up her shoulders, the questions and all the uncertainties seemed to fade into space. At this moment, it becomes just the two of them.As they lay there inside the quiet, the gentle knock at the door broke the stillness. Marie quickly sat up, startled by the sound of the door. She grabbed the blanket, pulling it over her shoulders, and started to get up. But before she could flow too far, Aaron’s hand gently grabbed her arm, pulling her go in reverse into his chest."Permit’s me to live like this," Aaron whispered, his voice low, however firm. "It does not matter who’s on the door."Marie paused, nevertheless feeling surprised at how effort
The next day, Marie and Aaron were discharged from the hospital. Aaron’s head was still bandaged, however, it seemed like he was recuperating. As they left the hospital, Susann stood by, her face showing signs of worry. She had helped them pack their things, and as they stood at the doorway of the hospital, she excused herself, giving the couple a few areas.“I’ll take a look at it later,” Susann stated softly before leaving.Marie gave her a small smile and a nod. “Thank you, Susann. We’ll be okay.”When they got into the car, Aaron’s hand found Marie’s, and for the time in a protracted at the same time as they held arms with no limitations between them. It felt natural, comforting. As they arrived home, Aaron’s steps were slower than usual, but he became determined. Marie helped him to the door and opened it for him. “I don’t need to be alone in my room,” Aaron said, his voice low, nearly hesitant.Marie turned to him, amazed. “But you need relaxation,” she said lightly, her voice
Marie’s heart skipped a beat whilst Aaron lightly pulled her closer. Her breath caught in her throat as he leaned in, his eyes tender, his face packed with something she hadn’t seen visible before — pure vulnerability. It wasn’t like the closing time, when everything was rushed and filled with so many unspoken things among them. This time, it became unique.Aaron’s lips met hers slowly, tenderly. The kiss becomes gentle and unhurried, full of warmth and longing. For a second, it felt like time had stopped. All of the chaos, all the pain, the misunderstandings — everything dwindled. All that mattered in that second was the feeling of his lips towards hers and the tenderness he became showing her.Marie was surprised in the beginning. She had never predicted this, in no way an idea that when the whole lot they had been through, they might come so far. But as she felt the burden of his kiss, the sincerity of it, she kissed him back, her fingers trembling as they reached as much as hold h
“She’s my wife, and I love her with the whole of me.” Aaron’s voice becomes clean, full of conviction.Marie just stood outside the door, iced up. His phrases had been like a lifeline thrown to her in a sea of uncertainty, a lifeline she hadn’t recognised she wanted until that second. Her heart warmed, and she felt a rush of emotions. Her mind screamed at her to leave, to let him have this second with Howard, but the door creaked barely beneath the stress of her stillness.Aaron and Howard glanced up at the sound, their attention now on the door. Marie’s heart raced in her chest as she realized she had no choice. She had been stuck eavesdropping. With a smooth exhale, she pushed the door open fully. As soon as Aaron saw her, his face changed. His concern for her changed into seeing the warm temperature in his eyes blended with the worry he continually carried for her. He sat up a bit straighter in the bed, his bandaged head making him appear fragile, extra susceptible than she had eve
Marie’s eyes fluttered open; she turned and was hit with a sharp, throbbing pain in her head. She winced, elevating a hand to her forehead, looking to block out the pain. Her surroundings were unusual, the white walls and the odor of antiseptic hitting hersenses. It took a moment for her to realise where she was. She was in a hospital room. She attempted to sit up straight, but the ache in her head simplygrew worse, and she lay going into reverse, respiration closely. Her eyes darted around the room, trying to make sense of the whole lot. The tender hum of machines and the faint sound of footsteps outdoors had been the best noises she may have wanted to listen to.Then, recollections rushed into her head as if a transfer had just been flipped. The image of Aaron being hit with the truck, the sound of the effect, his blood on the road—the whole lot came flooding back, and panic rose in her chest. Her breath stuck in her throat as she whispered, “Aaron!”She got up on the mattress, igno
Aaron didn’t think. His mind went blank, and his heart raced.Without thinking about the risk, without considering the hazard to himself, he sprinted across the street toward Marie. He needed to get to her. He couldn’t let the truck hit her. She had to be secure. As he ran, everything around him blurred. His attention changed to her. On saving her. Marie’s extensive, terrified eyes had been all he should see, and he knew if he didn’t get to her, it might be too late. The truck came too near. Her frame became motionless, her eyes wide with terror, and in that moment, he realized how much he cared for her."Aaron!" a voice shouted from behind him, however, he couldn’t prevent it.It was Susann. She was yelling his name, her voice complete with shock and panic. He should have listened to the fear in her tone, but there had been no time to look back. There was no time to assume. He had to save Marie. He had to do something. His frame turned into already transferring, the sound of his feet
Marie disregarded him all day. Aaron had attempted to speak with her, to fix his mess, but each time he approached, she grew to become away. She became distant, colder than ever, and he ought to feel it. Every word that came out of his mouth felt irresistible and bounced off her, and it hurt more than he could say.The night came, and it was time to head home. They each stood within the elevator, however, there was no conversation, no change of appearances. Marie stared ahead, her eyes fixed on the doorways as the elevator moved down. She stepped out first when the doorways opened, walking swiftly closer to the exit of the building. Aaron called her, but she didn't prevent it. She didn’t even appear again."Marie!" He called, his voice louder this time. She stopped strolling, her heels clicking speedily on the hard floor. She didn’t respond. The sound of her shoes echoed within the empty hallway, every step a reminder of how far she had turned away from him.His heart raced as he acco
Hours had passed since Howard’s sudden go, however, Aaron nonetheless sat alone in his office, the room silent except for the smooth hum of the air-conditioner. He stared at the office work on his desk, but his mind wasn’t on the duties in front of him.His thoughts wandered to what Susann had advised; she knew what was best for him, but now he was doubtful if she was right about Marie.Susann had made it clear that Marie had become a distraction. She stated it quietly, almost as though she didn’t need to harm him, but the phrases nonetheless stung. Marie, a distraction. How should she be that, whilst she had been the only one to face him, the one who was there through the whole lot, even if he were distant and cold?Aaron's arms gripped the edge of his desk, he knew that his marriage to Marie had complicated the whole lot.He changed into sooner or later taking complete control of the organization, something he had been operating towards for so long, and yet, everything felt so diffi
