I hated her so much. Chanel had dragged me to one of those parties that the popular girls and boys went to on the last Friday of every month. It was some kind of crazy ritual that every kid in school dreamed about being invited to.

Not me.

I had a dream, and it was to get an education and get out of town. Don’t get me wrong; there’s nothing wrong with the town of Small Borne, but there’s more to life than one place and I want to experience it.

And that’s why my body, mind, and soul were focused on college.

Not like Chanel; she only had her body, mind and soul focused on Dwayne, the all-star quarterback that was going places. Just like me.

“Adele, can you walk faster? We’re late!” Chanel half-whispered and half-screeched at me.

“I would if I didn’t have this stupid skirt on, and make-up that’s a second skin on my face.”

Okay, so it was a bit of an exaggeration. The make-up wasn’t stopping me from seeing, but I was only keeping her company and I didn’t want to be anywhere near Dwayne’s best friend, Liam.

“Oh, don’t be silly. If we get there too late then they may hook up with some other girls.”

She’d said the wrong thing. But we’d had already taken our bikes and were already almost at the secret spot. I never understood why they called it that, when everyone knew how to get there. Then we changed out of our jeans into skirts and she touched up our make-up in the dark, using our cell phones as lights.

I didn’t even want to know what I really looked like.

I doubt I looked sexy. More scary. But I did it just to make her happy.

“Isn’t hanging around your dad’s barber shop and waiting for Dwayne to come in every week enough for you?”

I put my hands on my hips thinking that maybe she’d get the message and just stick to her usual routine of trying to get the guys’ attention.

“No!”

She sighed, that long exaggerated thing that she did whenever she wanted to make a point. One that I didn’t want to hear.

“You know that it’s nearly Prom don’t you?”

I couldn’t see her, but the sarcasm in her voice was enough to put me off going any further.

“Besides you don’t want to stay at home and listen to Henry and your mom making out do you?”

I shook my head, “No way. Why did she have to date him, out of all the men in town?”

“And we know that ever though since your dad died, you’ve still not got over it. I’m sure your mom dating has been hard on you.”

“It was at first, but it’s been five years. I know that Mom has to move on eventually. She had to work for the first time in her life since he died and she’s managed to pick herself up. It’s just why she had to date him. Henry’s fine. It’s his son, Liam, that has issues. Big issues. I don’t even understand why any girl would even hook up with him. The guy’s a mental case.”

I didn’t know if I was trying to convince her or myself.

“Is that why whenever he walks in the room, you go bright red and you can’t get keep your eyes off him?” She took my hand, “I told you, your secret’s safe with me. I know you have a crush on him.”

“Now, you make me sound about five. I don’t have a crush. The guy’s a jerk.”

“I know he took your homework, handed it in and said you copied him.”

“Like that was likely? As if I would ever copy him.”

“And then Liam turned up at your date saying that you asked him to come and save you from Pete.”

“And I really liked Pete. I couldn’t even explain to him that Liam’s a jerk and how could I ask two men out at the same time?”

“I don’t even know why you asked Pete out in the first place?”

I sighed, because we’d had this conversation so many times. I’d always left out the part when we were in the cafeteria and Liam came up to me and said that we should go to his place and get it out of our systems. He accused me of having a thing for him. I went out of my way to prove that I had nothing for him, by asking Boring Pete out. He was the safe option. Until Liam turned up, I was kind of bored. Everyone is whenever Pete starts to talk, but he’s such a nice guy.  It’s just that no one wants to talk about Star Trek all night, apart from Trekkies, and no one wants to look at his collection of monuments via photos or the stash that he keeps in his backpack, again apart from Trekkies. After that night, he went and asked a Trekkie fan out and they’re happy in love and I’m just…

“Anyway, let’s just get it over and done with.”

I picked up my speed thinking about that night with Liam. There was another part I always missed out. Once Pete was out of the way, Liam held me in his arms and kissed me, then he broke away saying, “Pete could never kiss you like that.”

He had a point, but he didn’t even ask for permission; then again I didn’t protest. I watched as he left me like a jilted bride on my doorstep after giving me the kiss of the year. Shit, it was my first kiss and it wasn’t just that it made my panties wet. It just made me want him even more. But, I’ll never confess it to Chanel, and certainly not him.

***

“There they are.”

I stood nervously seeing just Liam and Dwayne were sitting by the electric lanterns, which were in a circle.

“Where’s everyone else?” I whispered to her as she picked up her pace.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you. We’re the only ones coming.’”

“What?”

“Last week in the barber shop he asked me to come alone. Well not exactly alone,” she paused, but then continued, telling me a different story to the one that she’d been telling me ever since she told me about that night.

“He said that I should bring a friend.”

“A friend!”

“Yes, but that was code for just bringing you.”

“How did you work that one out?”

“Come on, it’s not like I’m going to bring anyone else.”

I held on to her arm before she even thought about taking another step.

“Why didn’t you ask Hazel or Rebecca or someone else? We hang out as a group!”

“Oh, none of them would come. Besides you and Liam have history together.”

Before I could even say another word as quick as lightning she was away from me, heading to them and waving her arms in the air.

“We’re here!”

Fuck, damn right we were there and I didn’t want to be. She’d tricked me and she damn well knew it. If I’d known all of this then I wouldn’t have come. Hazel would have come if she’d asked her, but she didn’t, because she chose me on purpose.

“Great!” Dwayne screamed out, and Liam muttered something to him. He whispered it in his ear and it annoyed me even more as his eyes darted in my direction.

Why was I walking toward them, and not the opposite way?

Number one, because I get lost trying to get out of Walmart. I have no sense of direction and I needed Chanel to show me the way back to our bikes.

Number two, well there wasn’t one; I just felt like numbering them.

“Hey guys, you guys got the party started without us?”

Chanel was such a flirt. She was swinging her hips to the side and now everything was falling into place for her as Dwayne wrapped his hand around her waist.

As for Liam, he did that thing. It was a mix between a grunt and a smile. It should have had me running even if it was toward the damn trees, but it got me every time. I found it sexy. A guy that said nothing, but a lot more with his expressions when he felt like giving some away.

“Let’s have a drink.”

Did he just invite me to drink with him?

I turned to look and see if someone else was standing behind me.

“Yes, it’s me asking you for a drink,” he laughed as he put his arm around my waist. It was an open invitation. In my confusion I walked with him.

“We really shouldn’t be drinking at our age.”

I sounded like my mom, a natural thing I did whenever I was nervous.

“Well, we’re all over eighteen, and under the state of Minnesota it’s not illegal.”

He winked at me; I knew that it wasn’t illegal. But I just didn’t want to do it. One sip and I’d be laughing and embarrassing myself, which was cool when it was only the girls in the room but in front of others, and especially Liam, it wasn’t. He’d be the one running through the woods trying to get as far away from me as possible.

I smiled, thinking that I couldn’t do anything else seeing as I was speechless.

“I know what we should do…” Liam said, looking at Chanel. God, she may as well have had her tongue out. It was so obvious what she had in mind and none of it was good. She had it so bad for Dwayne that she could start a forest fire. She was like a cat in heat.

“What?”

She practically sat on top of Dwayne and took a quick swig of her beer. It was kind of clear “what” Liam was thinking, as his hand grabbed my waist even tighter, almost like a cobra! For a girl that didn’t want to drink, suddenly I didn’t hesitate in practically shoving the whole bottle down my throat. “Spin the bottle!” I announced.

Chanel clapped her hands, “Great idea.”

I nearly choked and I was coughing so badly that instead of Liam patting my back, he just rubbed his hand up and down so firmly that it made me choke even more.

“Adele, are you okay?” Chanel said sympathetically. Maybe for once she would feel guilty about tricking me into this sex pool. That’s what “let’s play a game” stands for; everyone ends up having sex and disguising it as being something which accidentally happened because they were playing a game.

I shake my head, gasping “No,” while trying to breathe.

“Maybe if you take your top off you’ll feel better.”

And all of a sudden, I stopped coughing and repeated the word, “No.”

As I moved away from Liam and smiled while taking the bottle, I had a question for him. One that involved making him feel the same way that he did with most of students.

Small.

Like insects.

“I have a question for you.” Then without hesitation I finished the rest of my beer. I should have eaten something beforehand, but I didn’t know that we weren’t going to a real party and I’ve been eating one too many pieces of candy while burning the midnight oil.

“Spin that bottle! Someone’s in a party mood now!” Dwayne said as he stroked Chanel’s face. The way the two of them were behaving was making me sick, and it wasn’t from drinking the beer too fast.

Liam’s emerald eyes were on me; there was no expression on his face and then he opened his lips. I expected him to tell me to slow down or that we should play another game. Instead he blurted out, “Spin it!”

And that was exactly what I did, hoping that it would land on me.

I realized I was pissed as I spun it and Chanel jumped up and clapped her hands, “Adele first!”

I slumped back down, thinking that this couldn’t get any worse. Until Dwayne asked the question, “Tell me Adele, who’s the boy that you want to give your virginity to when you leave high school?”

“Who says that I’m still a virgin?”

“Come on Adele!” said Chanel. “Don’t play games. Besides it’s called Truth or Dare for a reason. You’re not the one that’s supposed to be asking the question!”

Really, what does this woman know about truth!

She lied to me about coming here!

“Well it looks as if she doesn’t want to answer so you have to give her a dare, Liam.”

Then there was this moment of silence; the thing that boys do as if they have some secret code that only they know the answer to.

“Take off your clothes and throw them in the woods.”

“All of them?”

Both guys nodded and I look to Chanel. Instead of protesting, she whispered a bit too loudly, “You could have just told them the truth!”

The night seemed to go on and on, and not only was I slightly dizzy from drinking too much, but also I was cold from sitting in my panties in the damn woods. It was my idea; I was the one that started playing this stupid game. No one had forced a gun to my head. The crazy part was that Chanel felt bad so she had stripped to her underwear too, before it was even her turn. Neither of the guys protested about it. I did, a bit, but once again I felt like the stick in the mud at even suggesting that she should keep her clothes on, when everyone was happy for her to be naked. I must admit that the guys had thought of everything and weren’t the reckless assholes that I had thought they were. They had made some hotdogs so we wouldn’t be completely drunk, and the mood changed as they didn’t seem so sleazy as Liam lifted up his arms and took off his shirt. “About time it’s not just us that are half-naked!” I sighed. At least they were stripping as I shoved the last piece of hotdog in my mo

  • Forbidden Temptation   Virgin

I was a virgin and we were in the woods. I couldn’t believe that I had openly invited him to take me right then and there. I had envisaged, like most girls did, that it would be at the Prom or on a date night that a couple would seal their love for each other. Then again, there was no love between Liam and me. Only lust. It had to be that. “Touch me,” he blurted. God, it must have been written on my face. From the moment he took off his shirt, that’s all I had wanted to do. Touch him. Does that make me some kind of freak?I didn’t care as I started to drag my fingers through every groove and channel of his torso. It was as if there wasn’t any meat on him, only muscle. His abs, they were so damn big. There was something that was so damn potent, yet dangerous, about it. As if he could take me at any moment and I didn’t have the strength to fight him off. But I could tell by the fact that he wanted me to feel him, that he wanted me to do it of my own free will. I loved the way that h

  • Forbidden Temptation   Ready to go

We were dressed and Liam was holding me in his arms. I felt safe and warm as we sat on the mat. I knew that something had changed within me after we put on our clothes. He didn’t feel like the boy that I wanted to avoid anymore. The opposite; he felt like the boy that I couldn’t see myself without. “Liam, are things going to be different now?”“Do you want them to be?”I hated when someone answered a question with a question. He laughed and then kissed me on the cheek, “I was kidding; sure they’ll be different.”I was just about to say something when both Dwayne and Chanel came out of wherever they’d disappeared to and it was clear—as Chanel’s skirt seemed to be a thing of the past—that they’d been up to exactly the same thing we had been. I laughed as I saw Chanel trying to get the leaves out of her hair. I stood up and decided that I would help her, “Have fun did we?”She hugged me and said, “More importantly did you have fun?”I kissed her on the cheek and squeezed her so tight.

“We need to stop doing this,” I purred as he started to study me with lust. It was written all over his face. My mom was out with his dad and they wouldn’t be back ’till late. Real late, and we were using that time to get to know each other. All over again. “It’s not that I don’t enjoy it. It just feels wrong.”“And that makes you want me even more.”His eyes were undressing me as we stared at each other. Our eyes continued to be locked as we both headed up the stairs and toward my room. “Besides, coming in through the front door is so much easier than climbing the tree. Sorry about the photo. Did I break it?”I quickly changed the subject, remembering the other night when he climbed into my room and nearly broke the photo. The last one that was taken before he was taken away from me. A hit and run they’d called it. They never caught the person, but I knew that one day they’d find out who did it. Until that day, I kept his photo near my bedside just a reminder that I’d never forget a

“We’re going to be out of here soon,” Chanel smiled as she spun round one more time. “You guys look beautiful,” Mom said as she took a photo. The thirtieth one she’d taken since she came up the stairs. “I can’t believe my baby girl’s going to be leaving home. Then you’ll graduate. Have kids and get married,” she stared to move her peroxide hair from her eyes as she cried. Mom had spent a bit too much on her looks ever since she started dating Henry. I wanted to tell her that she was perfect, just being a natural brunette like me. Now, she spent nearly all her time either with him or getting beautiful for him. She would say that she did it for herself, but I knew the truth. Mom was feeling lonely. Up until now, it had been her and me. Now I was leaving home. She must have realized that she’d been working all this time for her daughter. The one that managed to get into an Ivy-League college based on her grades, with a scholarship. “Smile!” Laurie, Adele’s mom, said as we were about to get into the limo. My hands were around Adele’s waist. I was fucking smiling. I wasn’t sure what Adele was doing; all the make-up in the world couldn’t hide the distressed look in those dark eyes. She looked the most beautiful woman in the world and yet the most miserable one all at the same time. How was that even possible? We’d spoken the previous night and she was excited about it. She’d said that she hoped I’d like her dress. I even joked and told her that she could be wearing a paper bag and she’ll still be the prettiest girl there. Fuck! That was before I saw her coming down the stairs. I was fucking speechless. I’m not the Prom type of guy. I think that the whole thing is a fucking show. One that I could do without out going to, but she wanted to go. And I thought that for once in my life I would go out on a limb and do something for someone else. Instead of always doing what I want to do.Now, I could see that I was fucki

“Liam, I’m sorry. I was just feeling a bit down about it all coming an end.”I kissed her on the lips as we moved into the main hall. “Shit, I thought that someone had died, Adele. You kind of scared me. I’m glad that you had a bit of champagne. It seems to have lightened you up a bit.”She nodded, but maybe the champagne hadn’t completely done the trick, because her eyes started to fill with tears again. “Adele, talk to me. What’s up with you?”Then Chanel came up behind us and said, “If you guys walk any slower, by the time we get inside the Prom’s over!”She swept up Adele’s hand and then walked in front of us. Chanel’s the kind of girl that I love to hate at the best of times. Sometimes she just has too much energy; I think that she’s on a high most of the time. “Did you give her anything?” I asked Dwayne as he walked up to me, with his eyes firmly fixed on Chanel’s ass. He patted me on the back, “Just some loving.”“Fuck when?”He laughed, “You need to give that to Adele too.

My dick could only stay under control for so long. I decided that we had to go. It was at around the time Chanel and Dwayne were announced the king and queen of the Prom and Dwayne took out his seven-page speech, and everyone stood and listened to him as if he was the president. It was all about how great he was and how great high school was. As everyone agreed, I decided that they must have gone to a different high school. As far as I was concerned, the best part of it was leaving. There was nothing that was going to get in my way. I studied; that was the main reason that I was on my bike most of the time so that I could escape to somewhere quiet and open a book. No one knew this about me. They thought that I was some moody guy that loved hanging out with Dwayne and playing ball. I wasn’t naturally talented like Dwayne and I needed reassurance to make sure that my stay here was temporary. I had a scholarship to go to Princeton. Only Dwayne knew about it. My wedding that I ended up sharing with my mom. Honestly, I don’t know if I’m jealous of you or not because I didn’t exactly mind how things turned out that day…”Chanel had been there for me, but she’d been too busy to stick with me the entire time, and I’d had Mom there to help me out. Chanel’s mom was around, but she was acting more as a supervisor than anything.“Mom!”I looked up at my baby’s call and gasped. “Oh, honey, you look so pretty!”“Pretty,” Chanel said, sounding just as awed as I did.“Thanks for inviting me to your wedding, Aunt Chanel,” Harmony said, before running away to join the other kids, not waiting for a reply.Chanel sighed. “Adele, your kid is such a sweetheart. She looked to be paying full attention to her juice box, though.“Shouldn’t we have waited to get here before giving her anything to drink?” I asked, still looking for a space to park.“It’s fine. I figured we could find a bathroom before we go in or something.”I just hummed. A moment later, I finally found somewhere to park the car, and it wasn’t too far away from the stadium. I pulled into space, and the three of us got out of the car.“Give me your hand, honey,” Adele said, holding her hand out to Harmony. Our little girl pouted. “Mom, I think I’m old enough now that we can go around without you holding my hand.”I sighed and rolled my eyes, seeing Adele pout as well. I knew, sometime after he left, she’d come to me and cry, and when she did, I would cry with her. Sometimes, things just seemed to hit her late, and when they did, they hit hard. It reminded me a little of myself at times.Liam brought down the last of his suitcases and set it at the base of the stairs, then glanced over at us. He arched an eyebrow at me, but all I could do was sigh.“Harmony?” I said slowly, pulling her away from my chest so I could look at her face. It was about time for me to go to school, and I was doing last minute checks to be sure I didn't forget something before I had to leave. I would be leaving for the city tomorrow morning, taking a few things with me to my new apartment that was closer to the school and my job. I would be coming back when I had to time off, but it killed me that I had to move away from my wife and daughter like I knew it bothered Adele.Shit, we hadn't even explained it to Harmony right that I wouldn’t be around all the time anymore. There were phone calls and video calls, but it was hardly the same.“Are you done?”I looked up to see Adele just walking out of the bathroom with a bathrobe around her and a towel around her neck as she wiped at her hair.“I can do whatever’s left once I get there,” I said, closing the laptop and setting it aside without taking my eyes off her.“I’m going to miss you when you leave,” she said w

It was getting closer and closer to the fall, and with it, nearer to the time Liam had to go off to law school. As summer was winding down, Liam had to get a bunch of stuff in order before he could leave. The one thing I hated most, though, was when he was looking for a place to stay. I knew he wasn’t leaving me, but I still hated that he had to move out of the house.I woke up one day, too anxious to sleep longer, and both Liam and Harmony came down to find me on the couch, and breakfast nowhere in sight.“I’m so sorry, honey,” I said, referring to both of them, but looking at my pouting daughter. “I haven’t cooked anything, but we still have cereal would you like that?”Immediately, she perked up. “Yay, cereal!”She shot toward the kitchen, and Liam grinned at me. I didn’t usually like her having cereal, so I tried to lessen how many times in a week she could have any, and she’d already had it twice. It had been a whole day since the dinner fiasco. I’d stopped crying a while back, but I was still pretty bummed out about it. Liam noticed, and he’d left me alone since then. We didn’t eat the food from yesterday, but at least I’d left it all covered, so all it needed was some warming. In fact, last night’s dinner was pretty much all we had throughout the day; I warmed separate portions for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It was evening already. Adele had spent most of the afternoon cooking, and I could smell all sorts of amazing scents wafting from the kitchen.
