Chapter 1

19 years ago "Your nothing but a piece of shit." He snarls at me his large, calloused hand tightly gripping my small chin.  I stay still like a stick in the mud not wanting to make any sudden movement that would enrage him even more. "Please don't hurt her, she hasn't done anything wrong. It was me!" My mother, Elizabeth, cries while frantically attempting to remove his grip from my chin with her frail hands covered in faint bruises.  "I don't care who it was. Get out of MY house with YOUR daughter." He yells his thunderous voice causing my body to shake in crippling fear.  In his other hand, his fingers curl tightly around the bottle of alcohol as my mom pulls me away from him and pushes me behind her, attempting to create distance between us.  "Where...where will we go? I don't have enough money to feed her rather than to find a place to live!" Elizabeth sobs.  "GET OUT!" He yells throwing th

Chapter 2

"Hey mom I'm home!" I yell taking off my black heels in the foyer."Hi honey! I'm in the living room!" Echoes a soft voice.Placing the heels back into my shoe closet, I walk over to the room where my mom sits peacefully on the white couch with her knitting needles and a ball of purple wool, the colors of the sunset streaming from the tall glass windows dancing playfully across her face. The large panoramic windows and the view of having the entire New York City right in our living room was one of the reasons why mom loved this penthouse and why I couldn't resist purchasing it."What are you making?" I ask gently placing a kiss on her forehead."I saw a new sweater pattern and decided to give it a try." She chuckles.Elizabeth Carter is the most beautiful woman in the world. Her light grey eyes compliment her dark mocha brown hair which is neatly tucked in a bun as I have always seen growing up. Her deep laugh lines around her eyes and lips

Chapter 3

"Aaliyah can you please bring me the child custody files for Mr. and Mrs. Samuelson? Okay thank you."Hanging up the phone, I know I have a lot of work to do for this case. Mr. Samuelson caught his wife cheating with his boss and Mrs. Samuelson caught her husband drunk and abusing their kids again. Although this child custody case would be simple, Mr. Samuelson is putting up a fight.Interrupted by a soft knock on my door I tell the person on the other end to come in."Ms. Carter, um there's something I have to tell you." Yasmin, my secretary, gulps closing the door behind her."Go ahead." I say my eyes glued to case papers. She fidgets for a bit before taking in a deep breath and saying, "Um, Mr. Alexander Adair called us."My head snaps straight up from the papers. I stare at Yasmin for a couple seconds, blinking rapidly as I try to make sense of what she said. Tension covers the air like a thick smog and nervousness grows like weeds insid

Chapter 4

I spent half of my morning in court since Mr. Samuelson did not agree that his children be with his wife. All the presented evidence showed that he would get drunk often, come home late, and beat his children and wife, however he continued to deny that it was him. At the end of the case, the judge agreed that the children stay with Mrs. Samuelson and that he be put on a restraining order. The last two days have been hectic for me in terms of this case, and I'm thankful because it put to rest my questioning thoughts of Adair and I's accidental bump in. I didn't understand what a billionaire was doing at a park and why he was there. Regardless, I had no time to ponder for too long thanks to the Samuelson case.Walking into my office, I put my handbag and laptop down. I'm starving and I still have an hour and a half till Mr. and Mrs. Adair come in. I decide to ask Aaliyah if she

Chapter 5

Gesturing for the couple to take a seat, we get straight to business."Aaliyah has informed me that both of you want to file for a divorce and have everything sorted out in terms of assets and equity." I state."Yes, we have," states Mrs. Anna Adair "and as our lawyer there are a couple things we want to discuss with you before we start with this meeting."I nod my head gesturing Anna to proceed as I take a sip of my water.Anna looks over at Mr. Adair and he gives her a slight nod to continue. "Um, so me and Alex aren't married yet." She finally says fidgeting with the A on her necklace.I almost choke on my water."Wait what?!" I exclaim putting my water bottle down. "But the magazines, news outlets, and everything say that you have been married since last month?"Am I losing my mind?"They do, and that is because we staged our wedding." Says Anna looking back at Mr. Adair. "Love, tell her all about it." She says tou

Chapter 6

I breathe a sigh of relief as soon as they leave. The paparazzi snapped pictures of the couple as they exited the building and a bunch of accusations were thrown at them. You could hear the paparazzi yelling about their divorce and if it was because "Anna was cheating" or that "Alex had found a new woman." As soon as they left the paparazzi left too. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what I just got myself into, and on top of that I'm left worrying about the stupid heart pain that randomly crept in and out during our meeting. Maybe I was just tired. I should go to the doctor and get myself checked out. I haven't gone for a while for my regular checkups and perhaps the pain was because of the pile of cases I had worked on and the associated stress. I pick up my phone and page Aaliyah, desperately needing coffee. A couple minutes later there is a knock on my door and in enters an excited Aaliyah. "Here's your coffee Sarah!" Aaliyah hands me the cu

Chapter 7

The week swiftly passed by and the day to finally meet Anna and Adair for our second meeting has come. "Are all the documents ready to go Aaliyah?" I ask speaking into the phone. "Okay, awesome. You'll be a part of this meeting as well. See you in ten." I honestly wasn't looking forward for this meeting and it wasn't because of the Adairs, but rather I was functioning on only three hours of sleep with the amount of work I had to get done for other cases that had court hearings tomorrow. "Work is definitely not my best friend." I mumble. Time flys by and next thing I know I'm in a room with Adair and Anna. Anna is dressed from head to toe in Chanel again and I'm starting to think that's her signature brand. On the other hand, Adair is dressed in a silver suit with a black dress shirt. I tell see that his suit is a Tom Ford custom made, thanks to Aaliyah pointing it out in one of his magazines. Although he looks put together with his styled hair and tri

Adair kept his promise and texted me the name of the place. It took me awhile to convince my mom to go, and after pleading with her multiple times and bribing her that we'll have a Lucifer marathon if she goes, she finally gave in. Now it's her favorite place to go on the weekends.Sunshine Gardens Home was no ordinary senior center and I'm not surprised that Adair would know such a fancy place as this, but surprised that he does. It wasn't fancy in the sense that there were chandeliers and butlers, but rather it was kept in tip top condition with shiny marble floors, trimmed hedges, a ten acre garden, and high end chefs. To top it off, you could find every activity here from senior basketball, to golf, swimming, lacrosse, but most importantly activities for people with disabilities. While my mom is enjoying herself, I'm sitting cross legged on the dark grey fluffy carpet of the living room with case files sprawled everywhere. I have a home office but having everything

Chapter 9

After Adair left, I felt a surge of relaxation wash over me. Aaliyah texted me saying she was going to drop my mom back home because she wanted to know the 'details in person.' I texted Adair that Aaliyah is leaving and he said that he'll get one of his men to follow her, and will make sure to have his men watching over everyone targeted in the pictures today. I start to make tea for myself desperately needing some relaxation after having stuffed the pictures and note under my bed. Waiting for the kettle to boil, my mind drifts back to Adair. When he first came into my office, I thought he was a rich wannabe cocky snob, but he's nothing like that. Yes, he has his moments of savageness, but he isn't ruthless nor unforgiving.I don't understand why people label him as such.I know I'm his lawyer, but he also seemed concerned for the people that I love or else why would he go to great lengths to make sure they were safe? And his eyes?E

Chapter 10

If I had time to admire the luxurious exterior of his ridiculously tall company building I would be sending pictures of it to Aaliyah, but time is what I don't have and my feet are carrying me faster and faster to the entrance doors.I pull on the door and find it locked. I spot a few guards in the lobby and I knock hard on the glass door hoping to attract their attention. A tall bulky guy with a bald head approaches the door, but doesn't open it and rather talks through the intercom."Miss, we are closed right now, if you need to speak to someone come back in the morning." He states and walks off. I stand there with my mouth hanging open, my words dying out before I could even say them. He didn't even give me a chance to speak.I quickly pull out my phone and text Adair about his rude guard and how he won't let me in. A couple seconds later I watch the bulky guy pull out his phone and utter a few words. As the conversation con
