Amy was in her bedroom listening to music while surfing the internet for college options when she heard a knock on the door.
“Come in!” she said, turning down the volume of the music.
The door to her bedroom opened and in came one of the maids.
“Yes Christy. How may I help you?” Amy asked with a glare, indicating that she was rudely interrupted.
“Sorry for disturbing you Miss, but your dad asked me to come get you. Dinner is ready.”
“I’ll be down in a minute.” she replied, rushing into her closet to get something decent to wear as she was just in a lingerie.
She grabbed a white long sleeve off shoulder crop top and ripped denim pants and quickly got dressed.
“Hey Dad” Amy greeted her dad who was already seated at the head of the dinning table with a kiss on the cheek before making herself comfortable at his right side, drooling at the meal before her.
“Don’t be rude honey and say hi to our guest.”
Amy could tell her dad was trying to hold back a laugh. Only when she tore her eyes away from the meal, did she notice Bryan, her dad’s best friend on the seat across hers. She let out a squeal as she hasn’t seen him in two weeks because he was out of the country on a business trip.
“Oh my gosh! Forgive my manners. I was famished.” she explained, hurrying out of her seat to give Bryan a proper greeting.
“I figured, since you never miss the smell of my cologne.” Bryan said with a chuckle as Amy engulfed him in a hug.
She blushed at his statement because there was a 100% truth in what he said. His cologne was her favorite thing about him as she could recognize it from miles away. Okay, that was a bit exaggerated, but none the less, she could recognize his cologne anywhere.
“What did you get for me from Germany?” Amy asked after the hug.
“Well… Let me see..” Bryan pretended to be deep in thoughts.
“Don’t tell me you didn’t get me anything.” she grumbled.
Henry, Amy’s dad stayed quiet, enjoying the scene before him.
“I almost forgot to get you something cos I was busy.” he confessed.
“But… I managed to get you an expensive perfume from a famous German designer.”
“You’re the best!” She squealed, engulfing him in another hug.
“Hey! That hurt my feelings.” her dad said, feigning to be hurt.
“I love you dad.” she embraced her dad before taking her seat so they could have dinner.
While they ate, Henry and Bryan talked about everything and anything. Amy joined in on the conversation when she felt like it.
She couldn’t help but wonder how Bryan and her dad managed to keep their friendship this strong for over two decades. They were jocks back in their highschool days, wouldn’t surprise her as they both still look perfectly fit.
They did everything together. From the stories her dad told her, they were inseparable. You would definitely mistake them for brothers. They had sleepovers at each other’s house every month, up until now. She even has her own room in Bryan’s house, that’s how close they are.
They have so many things in common, like being the only child of their parents and having only one kid themselves. They are both currently single. Her dad’s divorced while Bryan’s a widower. He lost his wife ten years ago.
“Amy?” Her dad’s voice brought her out of her trance.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“I was just telling Bryan that you’d be off to college pretty soon.” Henry said with a proud smile.
Amy bit the inside of her cheeks, feeling guilty for the decision she had already made. She wondered if now was the right time to break the news to her dad.
Taking a deep breath, she concluded now would be best.
“Dad, about that… I’m not going to college this year.”
“Dad, about that… I’m not going to college this year.” Amy quietly said, stealing a glance at her dad and Bryan, who both had shocked and confused expressions on their faces.“What?!... I don’t get it. What do you mean by ‘I’m not going to college this year?’…”Henry was trying his best to remain calm, but there was a distinct edge to his voice, Bryan could tell.“Amy, I’m waiting.” He pressed, slowly losing his patience.“Dad, I don’t think I’m ready for college.”“What do you mean, you’re not ready… For Christ sake Amy, you’ll be nineteen in less than a year.”“I know that dad, but I’m still not ready.” She retorted.“No one’s ever ready for anything… My God! Amy, what has come over you?! I thought we had this planned out.”“No dad, you had this planned out.”“Excuse me?”‘This is beginning to get heated.’ Bryan thought to himself as dinner was long forgotten.“Dad, you’ve had everything planned out for me and not once have I gone against you.”“So, why are we having this discussion
Amy arrived at her mom’s place late at night since it was an hour and a half drive from her dad’s place. She rang the doorbell and within seconds the door was opened.Paula, Amy’s mom was worried to see her daughter on her doorstep at this hour, and within a short notice, which has never happened before. Amy usually calls before coming over, but this time was different. Paula had received a sudden call from her daughter who sounded angry and hurt, telling her that she was coming over. She didn’t even get the chance to ask her daughter what was upsetting her because, she hung up almost immediately.“Baby. Did you drive here yourself? You could’ve asked one of your dad’s chauffeur to drive you here.” Paula finally said, giving her daughter a warm hug.“Mom. I’m not a kid anymore.” Amy replied with an eye roll.“I know that honey, but look at the time. It could’ve been dangerous out there.” her mom tried to make her understand.“It’s just 9:00pm, mom.” Amy countered.“That doesn’t mean a
“Paula, how is Amy?” Was the first thing Henry said the moment he picked her call.He was worried about Amy’s well being as she wasn’t answering her phone.“Well, good morning to you too, Henry.” Paula replied, rolling her eyes.“Where is Amy? Is she there with you? I need to talk to her.”“You don’t wanna do that.” She countered.“If I didn’t, I won’t be telling you.” He retorted, as he wasn’t in the mood for Paula’s mind games.“Fine. If you want to talk to your daughter, give her a call then.”“She isn’t answering any of my calls.”“Look Henry, I called you so we could talk.”“About what?”“Our daughter, obviously.” Paula couldn’t believe Henry would ask such an absurd question.“The last time I saw Amy cry was when she was five years old. And that was because she scraped her knee while playing in the park… Henry, last night I witnessed my baby sob because of you. Never in a million years would I have believed that such a day would come.”“Paula, I really need to speak to her. To t
When Amy and her mom were done shopping, it was already noon. Paula told Amy that Carl usually gets out of school by noon, so they needed to head home quickly if she wants to give him a proper welcome. Amy suggested that she had a better idea. She asked her mom to call the chauffeur that was supposed to go pick up her brother and tell him not to bother going to his school today because, they were going to pick him from school themselves. Paula did exactly as Amy said and began their journey to Carl’s school. Amy was really excited about this. She couldn’t wait to see the look on her brother’s face when he sees her in his school for the first time.Carl is Amy’s half brother from her mom’s current marriage. He is only five years old, and Amy adores him. She was ecstatic when she found out that her mom was having another child, even though it wasn’t with her dad. She was bored of being an only child because she had no playmate at home, so having a sibling was a blessing to her. Although
After ice cream, Paula drove them home. Amy showed Carl the new video game she got for him. He was so excited to finally have his own ‘Dragons: Dawn of New Riders’ . He immediately went upstairs, to his bedroom, to give it a try.Chris, Paula’s current husband returned from work half an hour later. Amy finally had the chance to say hello to him as she didn’t get the chance the previous night.Chris is an engineer, so he usually goes to bed early, that was why Amy didn’t see him the night before. Chris is a nice guy. He’s cool to chat with, and fun to be with. Amy is glad her mom still found happiness after her divorce from her dad.Her dad, on the other hand was a whole different story. He’s always busy with work and when he’s not, he’s either with his bestfriend, Bryan or they’re having a father- daughter time. His 100% attention has been on her after his divorce with her mom and even though she enjoyed the attention, she sometimes wonder if her dad was truly happy.“Dinner time!” Pa
The next morning kicked off as usual. Amy woke up, freshened up, and got Carl ready for school. After she was done getting Carl ready, they had waffles for breakfast. Chris left early for work because of a new project he was working on. Paula had to be in court early. So she decided to drop Carl off at school and asked the chauffeur to go pick him up at noon.It was just Amy at home. She finished her breakfast and went to the TV room to watch a movie. While watching the movie, Amy’s thoughts travelled back to her conversation with her mom.Her mom had confessed to her that at some point in her marriage to her dad, she fell out of love because things weren’t like they were in the beginning and this got Amy wondering if one could actually fall out of love. She thought love was supposed to last for a lifetime, to understand and endure anything, she guess she was wrong. She suddenly felt sorry for her dad.‘Why doesn’t he want to move on?’ she wondered, mentally cursing herself for not ca
Amy woke up early the next morning, careful not to wake her baby brother up, as she spent the night in his room because he was sad about her leaving. She smiled at the memory because it reminded her a lot of herself. She usually spends the night in her dad’s bedroom when she finds it difficult to sleep. After kissing Carl goodbye and successfully making it out of his bedroom without waking him up, she went into her room and quickly took a shower. After getting dressed in a comfortable casual wear, she packed her suitcase. When she was almost done, there was a knock on her door.“Need a hand?” Paula asked, closing the door behind her.“No, mom. I’m almost done.” She replied, pecking her mom on the cheek murmuring a,“Good morning.”“Shouldn’t you be asleep?” Amy asked while putting her skin care products in her suitcase.“Just wanted to make sure you were okay… Should I tell the maids to prepare a quick breakfast?” Paula replied, watching as her daughter closes her suitcase.“All done…
Amy quietly opened the door to her father’s bedroom. She found him sound asleep just as Bryan said. A smile appeared on her face at the sight of her sleeping father. He looked so relaxed and a lot younger while asleep. She slowly crept towards his bed and carefully sat at the edge of his bed.Although, she disobeyed Bryan by coming into her dad’s room, she has no intention of waking him up. So, she brought out her phone and started a chat with her best friend, Mandy. Her best friend shared her experience at a party she went with Jack and wished Amy had been there to see all the fun and wild things that happened. While they were chatting, Amy felt a movement on the bed. She tore her eyes away from the phone and looked at her dad. He was gradually waking up, so she quickly sent a goodbye text to Mandy and kept her phone in her pocket.“Good morning dad.” She greeted as he was rubbing the sleep off his eyes.Henry stopped his action at the sound of his daughter’s voice. He looked straigh
