Chapter 44: Echoes of the Past

Xander's POV

The musty scent of ancient parchment fills my nostrils as I pore the newly discovered pack records. My eyes burn from hours of squinting at faded ink, but I can't stop. Not when every page seems to hold another piece of the puzzle: Lyra's soft knock at the door breaks my concentration. "Enter," I call out, not bothering to look up.

"Xander?" Lyra's hesitant and tired voice stiffens me. "You wanted to see me?"

I finally tear my gaze from the documents, my breath catching as I take her in. Even disheveled and exhausted, she's beautiful in a way that makes my heart ache.

"Yes," I manage, gesturing to the chair. "I think... I think I've found something you need to see."

As Lyra settles in, I push an ancient scroll towards her. "Read this," I say softly. "Tell me what you make of it."

Her brow furrows as she scans the text, lips moving silently. Suddenly, she gasps, her eyes flying to meet mine.

"Is this... is this about me?" she whispers, trembling.

I nod grimly. "It seems so.
