57. Unending Past

“Oh, but you should know we still have unfinished business,” Nathaniel said, his voice taking on a more serious tone, his eyes fixed on me.

Confusion washed over me, and I could see the same look mirrored on Mrs. Carlos’s face. She didn’t seem to fully grasp what was happening, but judging by the faint smirk playing on her lips, it was becoming more interesting to her.

“If you two have met, I won’t be surprised,” Mrs. Carlos chuckled, a mocking tone seeping through. “After all, that’s the same lowlife who’s got your brother tangled in her web.”

Her words were a slap to the face, and I felt Ivan tense beside me, his hand still holding mine. He shot a sharp glare toward his mother, clearly trying to rein in his temper.

“Mother, stop,” Ivan growled, his voice barely controlled. “This isn’t the time for your insults.”

Nathaniel leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms as if enjoying the spectacle. “I wouldn’t call it a web, Mother. It’s more complicated than that.”
