Silence. Silence. Silence. I sit beside my brother staring at my parents who are trying their terrible best at acting prim and proper. My mother of all people is eating without making a sarcastic comment or toying at my patience. This two people are my saviors and tormentors. Cluttering and clattering of their utensils against their plates make my ears itch. I feel a nudge at my knee below the table, I send Nikolai a look, he eyes me then cocks his left eyebrow tilting his head over mother's direction. I know I'm not the only one who thinks having a peaceful meal with my parents is weird.

I hear my phone ping. "Excuse me" I pick my phone from my pocket. A message from Nikolai appears on my phone.

'please say something! The silence is killing me!'

I switch off my phone before returning it to my pockets. My eyes flicker from the old man to his wife. My dad is very good at acting whereas my mother is hardly getting it together. Her eyes keep fleeting looks to me when she thinks I'm not

Shit! Did he just kill my queen? For the second time?!. My left foot taps impatiently on the wooden flooring as I anticipate his next move. It happens slowly, his king leaves his position and comes a square forward. I rub my chin as I asses the situation. "So what you're saying is, there are people who are against the joining of the two mafias" He asks, his eyes not leaving the board. If I can just-I move my king forward also."Yes, I believe that there is an instigator who is stirring shit up" He moves one of his pawns forward but unfortunately for him it is in line of my bishop. I look carefully before I take my move. Of course it's a trap, if I take the move to swallow his pawn, I'll get swallowed by his queen. Sneaky old man. My eyes meet his as a smirks lines my lips, let me move a pawn forward too. "It's either some traitor from the Italians that is instigating the traitors here or the traitor here instigating the traitor over there" He moves his king forward and I move my rook

Tonight is the night, the prime minister's wife, Albano Sandra's 50th birthday party. The thing about Mr Albano is his underground work, he's a trustworthy man and keeps to his word but not many knows of his underground dealings. Most of his buildings and company were by the help of my mafia, Vipera but I know very well that we are not the only mafia involved in his success so that means tonight's party will be full of mafia men and women rallying the floor. The theme for the party is a masquerade ball which means everyone is expected to wear a mask. I stare at my reflection in the mirror. I look like shit. The past two nights were spent on trying to figure out the pattern of the bombing, Federico has not made any suspicious move lately neither has any of the capos. I don't want to kill Federico without having a solid reason, I won't disappointing father again. I'm going to need make up tonight, lots of it. I can't even pretend to be energetic tonight, I feel drained, hopefully Rolan

Gorgeous, that what it is. Suddenly I don't feel so miserable anymore, every feeling of miserability has been erased for my system because miserable won't look good with this dress. A long transparent blood red robe with black tulle edges, sweeping the ground and underneath it, I'll be wearing a Gothic red velvet and lacy mini jumpsuit with suspender set. My eyes trail away from it to meet with Meth's gleaming eyes. She wiggles her eyebrows at me. "You love it, don't you?" I roll my eyes, trying to hide my smile but failed. "It is lovely" I say to her, hiding the excitement in my voice. She rolls her eyes and begins to pack her materials back into her box. Helena walks into my room, her face beaming like a girl who was just asked to the prom. In her hands is a black box in her, on the black box is one red rose. I eye her suspiciously as she makes her way to my closet. Meth shares a look with me before she leaves my vanity and walks over to where I stood with Helena in front of me

The night is just beginning and the realization of tonight begins to set in. I'll be in the midst of a lot of people and I don't really do well in crowds but my training as a mafia don really helped downplay my anxiety around crowds or you can just say I'm very good at pretending. "Hey," I hear Tiana call as she approaches me by my vanity seat. She sees my face in the mirror and she instantly knows the battle I'm having with myself. She holds my shoulder, leaning closer to me with her cheek touching mine. "Remember who you are, Davi" she spoke right into my ear, it resonates in my head. I look back at her in the mirror, she also looks terrible but where I tried to mask it with makeup she prefers to go natural and use it to her advantage of being ruthless and unstoppable. My mind clips on to the sentence she whispered into my ear and I nod firmly, feeling my mood lift a little. "Anything?" I ask, purposely breaking the moment between us. She eyes me carefully and her eyes squint like

Her beauty strikes me like a bullet. I'm a man of stealth and tranquil but every glance at her makes me lose those two qualities. Walking into the room to see her clock a gun at her sister shouldn't be so enticing but damn, that is fire. Whoever picked that dress for her, needs a raise in their allowance cause it fits perfectly like a glove and the color is what I've always loved to see on her, the color red. Later tonight, I'm planning to make the color of the dress rhyme with her skin. A sly smile stretches my lips as I watch her grab her clutch purse and struts over to me at the entrance of her room. Her tanned long legs look perfect in those heels, and just how I wanted, it snagged on her flesh. This night will be pretty tormenting for me, if I do say so myself."Davi," Tiana calls and we both turn our heads. Tiana scowls at me and I wink back at her. Davinia eyes the both of us suspiciously."What's the problem, Tiana?" She questions softly. She doesn't seem to to act tough with

The drive continues smoothly with her constantly checking her phone and still swirling her glass of wine. I know this cause I've been throwing glances every now and then. It's been silent since we spoke about the Federico thing and I am not a talkative but there's this sudden urge to hear her speak. The sensuality in her voice when she speaks even when she doesn't try makes me comfortable, the way her tone varies depending on her attitude and still sound condescending and at same time humbling is so much appealing to me and there's the way she stares at me when she talks, that look of want, threat, mischief and wonder, all in one does thing I'm not ready to agree with in my body. "You haven't taken a sip from your wine" I mention dryly, feigning indifference. She looks up at me and I realize I'm forgetting something. "I believe the theme for tonight's party is a masquerade ball" I pull a rectangular box from my tux and open it. In it are matching gold mask which covers half of the fa

The melodious, classical waltz music welcomes us into the large spherical shaped hall aligned with rows of crystal chandeliers shimmering on the marble flooring. I look up to gaze at Ronan who grins back at me. He leads me forward into the hall occupied with people dressed in fancy dresses and tuxes with different beautiful masks. T Long tables with chairs situated at each opposite sides of the hall with different blue silver candle bars displayed on it. There is enough space in the middle for people to mingle and showcase their dresses. Chatters and clinging of wine glasses fill the air as ladies and gentlemen talk in groups while some are seated on the sofas beside the drapes, clinging wine glasses with each other. "I would like you to meet my parents." Ronan mentions and I nod slowly. We walk in sync with one another over to a couple with matching silver masks. The man, dressed in navy blue tux and black pants whispers something to the ear of the woman, dressed in silver no bac

A pretty thing, I won't lie. But just like I said, a pretty "Thing". She's like an empty can, painted with beautiful colors. Her voice sounds exactly like an empty can when it meets the floor. She has been yapping non stop right after I introduced myself as Ronan's date and politely asked her to discard her hand that was wrapped around Ronan's arm. She of course obeyed but for some reason I dislike it, now I have no reason to punish her. Well, if she continues with this yapping, someone will have to shut her up and I will be more than happy to do so."My yatch is so amazing, you have to come and watch the sea with me sometime, you'll love it" She squeals with a bright smile on her face which I immediately remove with just a sentence."He won't be able to do so, Ronan here gets sea sick." I say without flavor. Her face becomes red all over, almost matching the red one eyed mask she wore "How would you know?" She tries to sound mature and unbothered but fails terribly. I smile sweetly

"I went into the kitchen and made one of my favorite tea recipes, Creamy vanilla flavored peach ice tea. Taught your chef something new today, he should pay me." Mrs. Dimitri makes me smile again when I see her holding two plastic cups with dome lids filled with a foamy peak creamy orange-colored iced tea."I knew it would make you smile." She hands me a cup, and I take it, uttering a small thank you. The cold drink somehow makes me feel better about the drive. Costa, our driver, leads us to the Lexus where we take our seats at the back and settle. She watches me with eager eyes as I place the straw between my lips and take a long sip of my drink. My eyes close involuntarily; the heavenly taste commands them to do so. The sweet peach flavor bursts on my tongue, mixed with the vanilla ... I can't help but hum in approval at the taste.I pull the straw away. "It is divine." I moan before slipping the straw back in and enjoying the rest of it."I'm glad you love it. There is more where i

I will still make my usual visits, although the first few months after the wedding will be hard, but we'll get through it. In the meantime, meet my mother-in-law, Mrs. Dimitri.")I go to hug his right hand tightly so he can get the hint, and he does. His eyes widen in surprise, then in panic. He laughs nervously as he stretches out his hand for a shake."I'm Charles, nice to meet you." I sigh. At least his English is getting better."You do a good job here. I've never been to a winery before; it looks great." Mrs. Dimitri praises him while shaking his outstretched hand.A small blush takes over Charles' face as he thinks of what to say back to her in English. I immediately turn him away. "Please forgive him; he's flustered, and his English stil

I start the engine and drive outside of the garage, down the lane to the ranch. The sun shines on the smooth green pastures where the cows are out and scattered, chewing on the grasses without a care in the world, surrounded by white wooden gates of medium height. A worker is right at the left corner of the field; he spots me and waves with his hat. I do the same as I drive by.“This looks beautiful. I must say I'm surprised,” Mrs. Dimitri looks amazed by the view in front of her. “You manage the whole ranch?”“I have help. It's not easy running the mafia and a ranch,” I say as I take a turn to the right, heading up the hill toward the stables. It's beginning to get hot, and I hope it won't be a problem for Mrs. Dimitri.“No, it's not, but you're doing a good job, dearie,” she cooes. I feel her gaze on me, but I don't divert my eyes away from the road. “Will you be able to leave this behind?” Another feeling of déjà vu washes through me again. My lips tug upwards; she notices. “Did I

“So it's okay when you're grumpy and wicked at any time of the day, but when I do it, it's wrong?” Her eyebrows and nose scrunch. She looks offended.I run my hands through my messy hair and scoot back on my bed till my back touches the headboard. “First of all, I didn't say it was wrong. I said it was too early, and of course, the same does not apply to me because I'm the boss.” My arms fold underneath my bosom, and I shrug with a smug look on my face. For some reason, getting on Tiana’s nerves makes me feel good this morning. She raises her fist as if to punch me, but I immediately raise my hands high in surrender. “Just joking. What has your knickers in a twist?”She huffs again. I eye her outfit. Did she sleep in her suit, or did she dress up before coming to my room? But it's very early, and her clothes look ruffled. It's either she slept in it or she didn't sleep at all. Poor thing.“Your board members are so slow!”“Too much caffeine does that to one. And I've been overworking

"She likes gardening. She also likes to read but had to put a stop to that when it began to strain her eyes. She loves animals and will definitely love to hear how you've been managing the ranch after your father passed. Mother is not as energetic as she should be. She won't take up most of your time; she only wants to bond with someone who's about to be a member of her family, no need to be nervous. As long as you don't treat her like a patient… you both are good to go."I'm tongue-tied and unprepared. I totally wasn't expecting him to try and help me out. If all he said is true, then having a conversation won't be so bad. I did tell him my problem, and just like he promised, he helped find a solution for me. Maybe this marriage thing is going to work. I find myself smiling like a fool; my face brightens up, and I immediately return to reality."If you say so, I would have no problem speaking to her then. Thanks for telling me what she likes.""And you don't necessarily have to talk

We step inside together, but I immediately excuse myself when my phone starts to ring, fortunately for me. "I will try my best to join you for dinner. Please feel at home. Martha here is available for all you need help with; I will be in my study." With that, I bow to her. When I raise my head, she's looking at me with the same intent gaze that Rolan often directs at me. Like she's studying me, with the intention of knowing everything about me and acing every test and exam about me. Just like Rolan’s stares, hers also make me uncomfortable and nervous. I don't let her study me for long as I nod at Martha and take quick steps to the elevator.“Why is my heart beating this way?” I mutter under my breath as I rub my chest where my heart lies with a little force.“You should see a doctor. He would know the answer to that,” comes a snarky response from behind me, right before I open the door to my room. My eyes widen, and my legs move before I think. The disturbance in my chest is replace

I'm coming from the airport with Rolan's mother in the passenger seat. Roland was kind enough to let me know of his mother's illness. She was involved in a major accident years before Rolan and Nikolai came into their lives, and it hindered her eyesight. Medications and surgeries have been able to help her see thus far, but not for long. Her sight is getting blurry, and she can't see a thing without her glasses now. He also made sure to inform me not to treat her like a sick patient. He said she hates it and it spoils her mood. He also listed certain foods and snacks she will want to eat but is not allowed to eat. I've been repeating the names of those foods and snacks in my mind so I won't forget. These days my mind is like a browser with lots of tabs open and a series of downloads. I'm trying my best to keep up with my memory. "Are you always this quiet, or am I the cause of this awkwardness?" I turn to meet her squinted eyes and her smiling lips, completely at a loss for what to s

"First the 'shadow,' now the Grandmaster, eh?" Christian blows a thick puff of nicotine into the atmosphere while Nicolai and I stand behind him as he faces the glass door to the balcony of his office."That's what he calls himself now. Rumors say no one has seen his face. Apparently, he goes about with a mask," Nicolai reports, reading from the tab in his hand. Christian scoffs, but it sounds more like a short cough."I wonder why. Of course, no one would want to stare at a disfigured face. I'm starting to feel regret for not letting you kill him." He turns and meets my cold eyes. "So, what's the plan?""He needs to be put down. He is causing problems for the Italians, and he is doing that to ruin the joining of our families. He causes problems and frames the Russian soldiers for it. I won't sit back and watch any longer. It's good that he is under the guise of Grandmaster. We will kill him under the pretense that he wants to ruin our mafia and gain full control."Christian's eyes na

My mind is clouded with thoughts as I drive. Why did that man come to my office? He knows we've been searching for him. He came all the way to my office to tell me not to trust anyone? Who exactly is he? Most importantly, is he a friend or a foe or a clue to help solve my father's case? He did mention being friends with my father, but I don't remember seeing him in any of Dad's pictures.Dad never mentioned any ex-soldier, nor did Uncle. If he is a friend, why is he just making an appearance now? What is his mission? I hate not knowing. It makes me want to itch. This is not the mood I want to have when I meet Mother. I try to think of things that should put me in a better mood. Roland's veiny arms come to mind, the way they flex when he's handling me. His eyes, I can stare at them forever, especially when they burn with heat for me. Yeah, I love that. His suppressed moans and groans… A horn pulls me back to reality, and I realize that I'm not moving at a green light. As I enter the co
