LORI’S POV
The door to the cell slammed open and I flinched at the noise, standing to my feet. The guard that walked in, stared at me from head to toe. I didn't need anyone to tell me what he's thinking. Everyone in Agerna was thinking the same thing.
They all think I’m human.
“Out. Now.” he growled at me, barely holding himself from baring his teeth. I nodded sheepishly and walked towards him.
He secured the metal cuffs around my wrists and of course, my ankles before taking me out to where the other guard was standing. I can’t escape and they wouldn’t let me go, not until they’ve confirmed who or what I am.
The problem is, even I am not sure.
We walked through the quiet dungeon, taking the winding steps until we arrived at a door leading to the courtyard. I could already hear the music. My heart rammed in my chest and I swallowed the knot in my throat.
It’s tonight…, I thought.
I looked back at the guards, ready to beg them but the look on their faces told me that there was no need. They were going to make me go out there.
“Here, put this one.” One of them shoved a dress into my hands and the other uncuffed one of my wrists so I could put the cloth on.
“You want me to change, here?” I asked, raising a brow. Anyone can walk in and see me.
“I didn't ask you to strip. Put it on. Now. Don't make me force you.” The guard growled.
I swallowed and turned my back to them. They cleared their throat before turning, “You have thirty seconds.”
I changed out of the shirt I had on and put on the dress, tying it around the waist. It's a ceremonial robe. If it weren't for the condition I was in, I would have admired how beautiful it was. I yanked off the trousers I was wearing just as the guards turned to look at me.
“Let's go,” one of them said, grabbing my arm and forcing me out the door.
People who know my story stared at me warily while the others from the neighbouring clans watched curiously. It was a moonlit festival. Every year, under a special moon, people awakened their wolves. Before or when they clocked eighteen.
I was already twenty with no wolf. At first, I was considered a late bloomer but now, everyone thinks different. They think that I don't belong here. I looked up at the moon and said a prayer.
Please, let it be tonight.
The guard took me right to the centre of it all. There, Alphas of different packs were sitted around the clearing in this vast courtyard. Men and women were howling, awakening their wolves while some found their mate in this chaos.
The moment I was escorted into that place, all eyes fell on me. I've never been in the presence of so many Alphas before. My knees threatened to fail but I stayed strong and lifted my chin. I would not let them break me.
Alpha Kilian stood to his feet and my breathe seized in my throat. It had nothing to do with the fear I had for him but more of the mad attraction I felt for him. I've been in love with this man for as long as I can remember. I had hoped that when I turned eighteen, he would be my mate and I would become his Luna.
I still had one more chance.
“Lorenza Gunivere, come forward.” Alpha Kilian’s boomed through the courtyard, grabbing everyone's attention. I swallowed and took a few steps forward. “There has been some… reports that you have failed to awaken your wolf, twice. Is that true?”
I looked around at the crowd watching. Even my so called friends didn't step up to help me or support me. I suspected they were the ones who reported me.
“Do not waste my time, Lorenza.” I flincked at Alpha Kilian’s tone. I missed when he called me Lori, like everyone else. This was the man who made me realise what love was. Now, he was so cold.
“Yes, Alpha.” I answered.
Murmurs rippled through the crowd at my response. Alpha Kilian lifted his hand to call order. “It is believed that you are not a supernatural creature. You're a mere mortal. A human.” The way he spat out the word scared me. What if I was? “Are you human, Lorenza?”
I stuck my chin up a little higher despite my fear. “No, Alpha. I was born to two wolves: one who was an omega. I am a werewolf.”
“Very well,” Alpha Kilian replied. “This is your final trial to prove yourself. If you fail to awaken your wolf in thirty minutes when the special moon fades, we will believe that you are human and you will face dire consequences. Do you agree?”
Like I even had a choice. I nodded, “Yes, Alpha.”
Alpha Kilian took his seat. “Start the time.” A guard obeyed him. They flipped the hourglass. The sand would run out in thirty minutes and my fate would be decided.
I looked up at the special moon and begged the moon goddess. I focused and tried to feel something, anything. The minutes rolled by and more people awakened their wolves. I was running out of time.
“Please…” I begged as I saw the last of the sand fall through the hour glass. The time was up. Alpha Kilian rose to his feet. “No…”
I turned and tried to run but two guards grabbed either of my arms and forced me to my knees. “No, please! Alpha Kilian, I'm a werewolf!” I screamed, struggling to free myself.
“Lorenza Gunivere, you have failed this pack.” He began.
“Alpha Kilian, please.” I pleaded, looking at all the Alphas around.
“Listen to your punishment: Lorenza Gunivere shall be executed.” Alpha Kilian announced. The courtyard was as silent as a graveyard.
My heart dropped. No, not execution? I struggled even more. “Let me go!” I screamed just as I saw a guard approach me. He unsheathed his sword and lifted it above his head, ready to kill me.
The sword came down.
LORI’S POV“NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!” I screamed just as the sword came down. I closed my eyes and waited for the pain that would finally take me away from this world.I would be reunited with my parents, the only two people who have ever truly loved me. We would be together again. Death didn't sound so bad.I closed my eyes and waited for a few seconds. I didn't feel anything, not even the pain from a sword cutting through my flesh. I felt nothing. Was I already dead? Was my death that swift?Slowly, I opened my eyes and looked around. The guards around me were gone, including the one with the sword. In fact, all the Alphas were standing to their feet and looking at me.Everyone was looking in my direction with wide eyes and they murmured amongst themselves. What's happening? I looked at my hands and checked if I had shifted. I was still normal.I was still human. The moon goddess had truly turned her face from me and abandoned me.But, why were they staring at me like that then? I looked a
LORI’S POVThe world seemed to freeze at the Lycan King's statement. I couldn’t speak. For some reason, I wasn’t as shocked as I expected to be. For one, I wanted to know if it was the truth. If I was his mate, it could prove that I was truly a werewolf and I could shift. It could also be a lie but, why would the King lie?“Your Majesty?” Alpha Kilian called in disbelief. “You don’t mean that this lowly—”“Finish that sentence and I will slay you where you stand.” The Lycan King turned his attention back to Alpha Kilian.I inhaled sharply at the threat. This was beyond strange. No one had ever stood up to me like this, especially against a Alpha. I didn’t know how to feel.Alpha Kilian gritted his teeth as he lowered his head. “I stepped out of line.” He apologized. The Lycan King smirked, folding his hands behind his back. It was devoid of any warmth; cold and menacing. “Yes, you did. First, you tried to kill her and then, you insulted her? You’ve gone too far this time, Kilian.”Alp
LORI’S POVMy face must have grown pale because he chuckled at me. “Don’t look so scared now, Lorenza. You managed to keep a bold face in front of all those Alphas. Surely humans don’t scare you.”He sounded like he was teasing me but I was too flustered to react properly. “No, it’s just that humans are—”“Monster hunters? Crude people who set witches on fire?” The Lycan King asked, amused. “Those are just stories.”“So, it’s not true?” I asked, lifting my brows.“Oh, they are, but that was a different age and time. Now, humans are fascinated by supernatural creatures.” He said, calmly. He grabbed the bottle of water in the cup holder beside him and opened it as he talked. “Simply because they can’t prove that we exist. We live among them, blending so well that you can't tell your own kind apart. It’s our power over them.”“But are werewolves safe?” I asked just as he took a drink from the bottle.“Why don’t you find out yourself?” I looked up in time to see some kind of bright purpl
LORI’S POVI looked away from him, shutting my eyes. I heard him chuckle. “You don’t have a choice, little wolf. Get some rest.” Without another word, he left, shutting the door behind him. I stood there for a moment, my heart banging against my chest. That was close. Was he truly about to steal my first kiss? The Lycan King was as frustrating as he was terrifying. What made it worse was that I was trapped in his world. But one thing was sure, there was no way I was going to let him control me. If I was going to survive in this realm, I had to find a way to stand on my own two feet, without the Lycan King.***A few hours later, there was a knock on my door. I didn't know how long I had been asleep. I was dazed as a few people walked into the room, carrying baskets of items and wheeling in dresses.I sat up, confused. “Who are you?”One of the maids walked towards my bed. She had short black hair and was wearing the black dress and white apron. She bowed, “Lady Lorenza, I’m Emilia
LORI’S POVMy breath caught in my throat. I turned sharply to look at the Lycan King, leaning back against the table to create some space between us.“That’s…” I stuttered, “that’s impossible. My parents—”“One was an omega and one a regular wolf.” he waved his hand in dismissal, “It’s either one of them lied about their true identity or you, little wolf, are not their biological child.”I was dizzy. My body was growing hot and I couldn’t think straight. My parents had lied to me?“Whoa, Lorenza,” the Lycan King was closer now. I hadn’t noticed when he’d reached me. He was close enough that his scent enveloped me. His hand wrapped around my waist to steady me. I hadn't even realized that my legs had given way under me and he had caught me.My head ached and I couldn't focus on the fact that he had called me my name. “I’m sorry, I just… I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” I replied.“You’re in shock,” he said, leading me to take a seat. He crouched down in front of me. His eyes softene
LORI’S POV:Before Emilia could wake me up and force me to wear one of the dresses in the wardrobe, I was up and ready. I was able to find comfortable outfits; a pait of grey joggers and a ugly yellow shirt. Yellow wasn't my favourite colour, no where near, but, it would have to do.There was a knock on the door. “Lady Lorenza—” Emilia stopped, watching me as I checked my face in the mirror. “You’re up.”“Yes, good morning.” I replied. I walked over to the other helper carrying a tray of snacks. “Oou, honey biscuits. Thank you.” I grabbed one and popped it into my mouth, savouring the deliciousness.“And you’re wearing that?” Emilia asked, her eyes roaming my body.It was nothing expensive but it was clothes that I was used to. I left Agerna in such a rush that I couldn’t even take anything. Hopefully, my stuff was still intact and I could ask the Lycan King for a favour.I still can’t believe that Alpha Killian could banish me just like that. Scratch that, I couldn't believe he’d trie
LORI’S POV:I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand. Emilia was already pale and I couldn't hear her breathing. We turned slowly at the same time. There he was, in all his glory. As usual, he was wearing mostly black. The sleeves of his black button down was specked with gold. His hair that always looked wet, was combed back. He looked regal and so formal. It was hard not to stare at him. Especially with the mate bond tugging me towards him. I was spending almost every waking hour trying to quench the feeling of mad attraction I felt towards him.I noticed the younger man standing next to him. He was as chiseled as the Lycan King, a few inches taller. And equally good looking. He had blond hair and wore no frame glasses. He watched me with a look that I thought was humour.I wondered who he was.“Emilia,” the Lycan King called. He passed the brown folder he was holding to the other attractive man. “What is she doing outside the penthouse?”“I-” Emilia stuttered, unable to find a
LORI’S POV I watched him carefully, trying to ascertain if he was any harm. “Look, I don’t even know who you are but honestly, I don’t think I care.” I said, “All I’m going to ask for is that you don’t let yourself into my room like that. Ever.”The corner of one side of his lips tugged upward. “We’re getting off on the wrong foot. How about we do this all over again?” He asked. He walked towards me, stopping a few feet away. He held out his hand, “Hi, I’m Caleb. I’m Elijah’s Beta.”Caleb. I studied his eyes and then stepped forward, taking his hand firmly in mine and shaking him. “Nice to meet you, Caleb.” I said, even though I wasn’t so sure.“I know you might have painted a picture of me in your head but I can assure you that I’m just a friendly face.” He replied.“Why do you keep saying Elijah?” I asked the one question bothering me.“Ah, that. You probably know him as Damon, the Lycan King. But when you grow up next to him, like me, it’s hard to forget what you’re used to. Altho
LORI’S POVI blinked at her genuinely surprised. Never in my days did I think that the Lycan King would date someone. Strangely, I felt betrayed.I had to remind myself that I was just his mate. He had a life before he met me and he would have a life after he met me. I just wished that the ‘life’ wouldn’t show up in the house I stayed in.Evangeline eyed me, accessing me. I could tell that she was a wolf and she was also accessing me. When she finalized that I was harmless, she said, “Don’t just stare at me. Make yourself useful. Where is the Lycan King?”My mad flashed back to the kiss that Damon and I had shared. Why would he have kissed me if he already had a girlfriend?“Are you deaf or something? I asked a question.” Evangeline said.Just then, the door opposite us opened and Emilia walked through. The moment she saw me, her eyes widened. “Lady Lorenza.” She called in relief as she hurried towards me. “You’re awake.”She looked at Evangeline, finally noticing her. “Oh Miss Evange
LORI’S POVI changed my mind. I would rather die than be indebted to the Lycan King.“What?” I replied, gripping the covers even tighter to shield myself from him.“You have to take off your clothes, Lorenza.” The Lycan King said, sounding like he didn't like repeating himself.“I… I can’t.” Maybe it was better to die than for the Lycan King to see me naked.“Lorenza…” The Lycan King called, “You’re dying.”“Then so be it.” I replied.“Don’t be such a prude. I’m not going to do anything to you. I’ve seen a lot more women and you have nothing to be worried about.” he said, approaching me.“That doesn’t make feel any better.” I retorted. I couldn’t fight him off when he hooked his hand under my knees and lifted me. “Put me down.”“You’re stubborn.” The Lycan King ignored my request and took me to the bathroom. He dumped me inside the tub. “You have three minutes to take off your clothes or I’ll do it for you.”I bit my lip. He wasn’t joking. “Turn around.” I said. He sighed but did as I
