LORI’S POV

I blinked at her genuinely surprised. Never in my days did I think that the Lycan King would date someone. Strangely, I felt betrayed.

I had to remind myself that I was just his mate. He had a life before he met me and he would have a life after he met me. I just wished that the ‘life’ wouldn’t show up in the house I stayed in.

Evangeline eyed me, accessing me. I could tell that she was a wolf and she was also accessing me. When she finalized that I was harmless, she said, “Don’t just stare at me. Make yourself useful. Where is the Lycan King?”

My mad flashed back to the kiss that Damon and I had shared. Why would he have kissed me if he already had a girlfriend?

“Are you deaf or something? I asked a question.” Evangeline said.

Just then, the door opposite us opened and Emilia walked through. The moment she saw me, her eyes widened. “Lady Lorenza.” She called in relief as she hurried towards me. “You’re awake.”

She looked at Evangeline, finally noticing her. “Oh Miss Evangeline, you’re here.” Emilia didn’t bother to hide her distaste for her. It turned out that she didn’t really like anybody. But I could bet ten horses that she hated Evangeline more than she disliked me.

Evangeline rolled her eyes. “Emilia.” She said. Yup, there was history between them. “Where’s Damon? I can’t find him anywhere and instead, I find this peasant girl who can’t speak.”

“Unfortunately, the Lycan King is out for a meeting.” Emilia placed her hand on my arm and the other on my back, leading me back where I had come. “I’ll take you back to your room.”

“Wait,” Evangeline commanded. For some reason, we stopped, turning to look at her. “‘your room’? You mean, she stays here?”

I knew Emilia was about to drop a bombshell when she straightened her spine and lifted her chin. “Where else would the Lycan King’s fated mate stay if not with the King himself?” She asked.

Evangeline looked like her lid was about to blow off. Before she could speak, I felt the aura and that connection the Lycan King and I have when he’s close.

“Evangeline,” he called, his voice strong and commanding.

Evangeline shut her mouth and glared at me before turning and beaming, “Babe!” She walked towards him and wrapped her hands around his neck for a hug. “I’ve been looking all over for you. Emilia and the other servant wouldn’t tell me where you were.”

The Lycan King looked at me, his eyes roaming from my feet to my face. “Are you okay?” He asked.

I nodded. “Yes.” I replied, my voice breaking. How embarassing…

“Wow, she speaks. I’m surprised.” Evangeline added drily.

“Emilia, escort Lorenza to her room and ensure that she’s comfortable before you come to my office.” He instructed. “Evangeline, come with me.”

He turned without waiting and she stalked after him, her long legs crossing like she was on a fashion runway or something.

“How long have I been asleep?” I asked.

“Almost a day,” She replied, “Come on, Lady Lorenza. Let’s get you back in bed. You still need to rest.”

It was useless though. Because, the moment she gave me my medication and tucked me in bed, my mind was back on the Lycan King. And his obnoxious girlfriend.

Maybe this was good. It would be easier for him to reject me. There would be no emotions attached and I would be able to go back to Agerna without any ties.

If the Lycan King already had a girlfriend he loved, he wouldn’t want anything from me. But then, I remembered Evangeline hugging him. He hadn’t returned it. Was it because I was there?

And that kiss…

I shook my head. There was no need thinking about it. A few minutes later, the medicine finally kicked in and I fell asleep.

I woke up some time around dinner, and Bri was the one who brought me my food. “Where’s Emilia?” I asked, sitting up as she placed the small table on the bed.

“She’s gone home for the day.” Bri replied. She bowed and left the room.

I didn’t think much about it. I finished eating and soon after, I fell asleep. The next morning, I woke up feeling good as new.

Bri was the only one who came into the room. I looked outside the door. “Emilia still isn’t here?” I asked.

Bri shook her head. “She called in sick. Don’t worry, she’ll be back tomorrow.”

I felt bad for her. I had someone to take care of me but she didn’t have anyone to take care of her now that she was sick.

I made up my mind. I was going to visit her. Whether the Lycan King agreed or not. “Do you know where she stays? Maybe we can take some soup to her.”

Bri gave me a look. “I do but…” she trailed off.

“But? What’s wrong?” I asked. Bri stared at the ground. My heart began to pound. “Bri, what happened to Emilia?”

She wiped her eyes. “After meeting with the Lycan King yesterday, he had his security detail take her away. I’ve not heard anything from her since then.”

I was out of the room in a matter of seconds.

“Lady Lorenza, Lady Lorenza,” Bri tried to stop me as I stormed into the Lycan King's office.

He was alone, poring over documents at his desk. He didn’t bother to look up.

“Where is she? Where’s Emilia?” I asked. He pretended like I wasn't there, turning to the next page.

“Did you…” I began, “Did you kill her?”

It wasn’t off the table. Emilia had talked about the Lycan King punishing everyone if he found out that she left the penthouse. They didn’t succeed though but what if he still punished her?

His dark eyes left the documents to meet mine. “And what if I did?”

We would be together again. Death didn't sound so bad.I closed my eyes and waited for a few seconds. I didn't feel anything, not even the pain from a sword cutting through my flesh. I felt nothing. In fact, all the Alphas were standing to their feet and looking at me.Everyone was looking in my direction with wide eyes and they murmured amongst themselves. What's happening? I looked at my hands and checked if I had shifted. I was still normal.I was still human.
