Roman POV:
The elders murmured among themselves after I dropped the information about the rogue attack. Julian and Jacob stood behind me, both of them looking like they wanted to flee the room. I wanted to as well. But for the sake of the pack, we remained. “That's the third one in less than three weeks,” someone commented. “This is getting worse.” “It's like they just spring out of nowhere!” Kennedy yelled, slamming his fist onto the table. I frowned at that but kept my peace. “What in Luna's name is going on?!” “My Beta has some reports he'd like to give,” I announced. Julian nodded when I called him up and stepped forward. The expression on some of the elders’ faces switched to disgust, while some exuded fear. The child of the former Alpha's maid, now Beta, is rumored to be a killing machine. They weren't wrong on both counts. I pursed my lips, recalling the way my best friend sped to Audrey and captured her neck in a vice grip. I'd spoken to him earlier and warned him never to do that again, but Julian, despite his loyalty, had a mind of his own. He could destroy an entire pack if it meant his was safe. Initially, that's why I didn't hesitate to choose him as my Beta. But after seeing my mate struggling in the air, something in me wondered if I'd made the right decision. No. He was just seeking for the good of his pack. He could change. “One Audrey Hill was captured at the scene of the fight, and she has been brought in for questioning. She sticks to her story that she is innocent, but as the odds are still against her, we have decided to keep her detained for the time being.” He didn't add that I'd been the one to make that decision. I’d tried to make her confess to no end, and my temptation to mark her as my mate grew with every moment I saw her. Also, my wolf had been tormenting me with her scent day and night, but with my wedding to Tanya merely days away, I didn't think it was advisable to have her around me till then. I just didn't know if that was the best decision to make. “Wait. Audrey Hill? As in, Bernard Gatrix’s daughter?” Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Kilton asked, her usual stony look replaced by surprise. “She's back?” Julian looked at her, his face impassive as it always was when he was before the council. “Yes, she is.” “Bernard had another daughter?” another of the elders asked, his face twisted in confusion. “I'd always assumed Tanya was his one and only.” “No, no,” Lottie said, waving a hand through the air. “Audrey is his first. Tanya was as a result of one out of many secret multiple nightstands that went bad.” As vulgar as her wording was, I couldn't deny that was the case. Still, I had to protect my fiancée’s honor. “You'd do well to recognize Tanya as my fiancée when you're speaking about her before me, Charlotte.” She glanced at me briefly before baring her neck. “I beg for forgiveness, Alpha.” “It's alright. And yes, as she has said, Audrey Hill is Bernard Gatrix-Hill’s firstborn.” “Lovely girl, that one,” Lottie said with a huge grin on her face. Her eyes told of many memories, presumably with Audrey. “And very clever, too. It's a pity her foolish father never saw her potential.” To hear Lottie speak highly about someone was rare, but to hear her speak so highly about my mate, who was currently a prisoner, was an even rarer occurrence. I raised a brow. “You knew her well, I presume?” “Of course I did! I was friends with her mother before she died. Gabrielle was such an amazing woman. If only she didn't marry Gatrix scum.” “Lottie,” someone warned. “Be careful what you say here.” She glared at him and huffed. “I knew her well enough, Alpha, until her father kept her hidden from society.” That explained why I didn't know her. If Bernard and Diane kept her hidden and shone the spotlight on Tanya, most people would have almost forgotten her existence or not bothered to talk about her at all. I indicated that I noted what she'd said, then gestured to Julian to continue. He nodded. “Since she's refused to confess, two days after the Alpha's wedding to Miss Tanya Hill, she will be banished from the pack.” Behind me, there was a sharp intake of breath. I forced myself to ignore it. A collective murmur went around the council members again. “Quiet,” I ordered. “Isn't that a bit too cruel, Alpha?” Lottie asked after the murmur had died down. “A whipping, I would have understood, but banishment?” “She was caught liaising with the rogues, Lottie. The least we can do for her is help her officially join them.” In response, she pressed her lips together and looked away. “That would be all.” I stood. “Also, I wish to once again invite you for my wedding that would be happening the day after tomorrow. There will be food and drinks in excess, so do not worry about your stomach.” Only a few were not excited. Others like Aaron Kennedy cheered and walked to give me handshakes and ‘special moments in the bedroom’ advice. I was laughing at some of their jokes when I noticed Jacob stomping out, a scowl on his face. When I exchanged looks with Julian, the expression on his face said he didn't care. “Excuse me,” I said, and pushed past the elders outside, just to see him talking and gesticulating wildly at Lottie, who had a deep frown on her face. He stopped when he saw me, but the scowl didn't leave his face. “Jacob,” I said as calmly as I could. “A word?” At first, it seemed like he was going to decline, but then nodded to Lottie and walked up to me before baring his neck in obeisance. “Alpha.” “Have you spoken to Audrey today? How is she?” It'd come to my notice that he'd been visiting her every day, trying to cheer her up. initially, I'd doubted the reports, but one day, when I gave into my wolf's temptations and went to see her in the prison, I heard her laughing at something he'd said.He looked surprised at my question, then turned away. “She's not good at all. And she’s malnourished.”I frowned at that. “I specifically told the warden to give her food-” “She's not eating it,” he interjected, the scowl back on his face. “She's deliberately starving herself, Alpha. Because she wishes to die.” It seemed like a silver knife was lodged in my chest at those words. I stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean by she wishes to die? It’s only been about a week and a half since she was detained-” “It's been about a week and a half to you, Alpha, to her? To her, it's like an eternity!” As soon as he said that, he turned on his heels and stomped off, leaving me stupefied. The following day, when darkness had ruled for about four hours, I stepped out of my house to visit the prison. I would have gone the night before, but Tanya had called, and I was unable to leave the call as early as I wanted to. Jacob surely wasn't serious, I thought as I marched down the path to
“Thank you, Marcus.” She laughed again and tapped his arm thrice. “I must say, I wasn't sure you were going to make it.” His green eyes roamed her body shamelessly. “For you, Diane, how could I not? You're a very good friend.”A few meters away, Julian wanted to vomit. But he forced himself to stay put and survey the perimeter for more threats apart from Diane and the infamous Marcus Henderson. He'd been very close to dethroning that king a couple of times in his covert operations but failed each time. Hearing that fool flirt with Diane like they were horny teenagers caused invisible leeches to feast on his intestines. Roman hadn't responded to his calls that morning, neither had he texted. And when Julian had decided to visit his home, he'd found it empty. The thought of Roman going to the prison to see Audrey had floated in, but he'd pushed it out almost immediately. Even if he'd done that, he couldn't, or, shouldn't have waited till the following morning. That would be a reckles
After checking her out, the doctor told me that she'd ingested silver, but not up to the lethal dose. Which was why she still lived. Otherwise, she would have died. I'd wondered where she'd gotten it from till I remembered the silver handcuffs on the wall that were used to chain prisoners while in the cell. I hadn't had the heart to use it on her, but hearing that she'd tried to kill herself using it…Jacob was right again, I thought as I rocked her now warm body. She'd been miserable. And it'd been my fault. She was obviously scared, and despite finding out that she was my mate, she'd begged me not to leave Tanya. She'd pleaded her case multiple times. Despite what I'd thought, locking her up hadn't been the best solution. There could have been alternatives. I sighed and cuddled her closer to me, my wolf letting out a small sound of pleasure at the contact, and we stayed there in silence for a while till I heard loud noises.Less than a minute later, Diane stood at the door of the
I couldn't deny the truth. “I'm so sorry, Tanya. I didn't mean for it to happen-” “It’s my fault.” There were tears in her eyes now. “I should never have told Mother to ask her to come back home. Then we would have gotten married, and I'd have been yours. You would have been mine. It's my fault.”“Tanya-” “I hate her so much.” The solemn way she dropped that statement made me pause. “...what?”Her tear-stained eyes looked directly at me, and I saw a storm blooming in them. “I said,” she sniffed. “That I hate her. I hate her so much.”Then she turned and fled.Julian came out not long after that with on unconscious Diane. “Had to put her out,” he grimaced, opening the door of a car I hadn't noticed before. “She was calling me a child.” I didn't know how to reply to that.He waved me over after he'd got into the driver's seat. “Get in. You need to give that official statement of yours, and soon. Diane's goons are still there.” I did as he'd said, and soon after, I'd dropped Audrey
If I could describe it, I'd call it electric. Just like the time our eyes met.“Can I-” he paused, seeming surprised that his voice had dropped by an octave, then chuckled embarrassedly. “No. It's too soon.”“What is?” I whispered, not wanting to distort the mood that had been created.I didn't miss the way his gaze dropped my lips and slowly traveled back up to my eyes, and my wolf protested when he stepped back from me. “It's nothing. I'll be back soon.” “But Alpha-”“Oh, and,” he said with a slight frown. “You should stop calling me Alpha. Call me Roman.” Immediately, I shook my head. “That would make it seem like I'm competing with Tanya for your heart. I won't…I can't do that. Not to her.”Hearing my stepsister's name, his eyes dimmed, and he looked away. “It doesn't matter anymore.”I was pretty sure I had a confused expression at that moment. “What do you mean? You two are engaged to be married in a few hours. How can you say it doesn't matter…” I trailed off, a random though
“I need space, Mother.” A sob raked its way out of Tanya's throat. “And I'd prefer if you just-”“Come on, Tanya.” Diane felt desperate now. This had gone on for long enough. “Please. Let me help out, at least.”Silence greeted her statement, and then she heard a loud sigh. Seconds later, a puffy-eyed and bedraggle haired Tanya stared at her. “You can help out by staying out, Mother. But since you just wouldn't give up, come in.”Seeing that look on her daughter's face almost broke Diane, but she kept her emotions in check.Tanya flopped on the clustered bed, and her mother, momentarily forgetting her mission, examined the situation with concerned eyes. “Don't you try to say something derogatory against me,” the younger woman suddenly said, startling her mother. “I’m grieving, Mother.”“I was not going to,” Diane replied, clearing an area with her hand and sitting there. “I was just…it's a mess.”“I'm a mess. It's just a reflection of how I feel right now.” Subconsciously, Tanya's h
Audrey POV:I watched, frowning as another box found its way to the side of the road. “Yup. That's the last of ‘em,” the man sent by the landlord- Fred, I think- said, grinning in spite of the sheen of sweat on his forehead. The scowl on my face caused him to grin even more. “Why the frown, baby cakes?”I said nothing, choosing to turn around and sit on the stairs leading to the door of what used to be my apartment. He wasn't important. He was just a faceless human, like the rest of them. He wasn’t special- wasn’t worth anything to a werewolf like me. Still, he'd been the one to facilitate the start of my homelessness. I watched as he started the engine of his truck before driving away, the reality of my situation sinking in.Since losing my job in human civilization less than three weeks ago, I'd been living from hand to mouth. I’d known was only a matter of time till I was thrown out on the street. What I hadn’t known was that it would be so close. There I was, surrounded by wha
Roman POV:“Alpha.”I nodded as the elders I'd assembled for a meeting bared their necks to me in obeisance, then took a seat, allowing them to do so as well before lapsing into momentary silence. Finally, I spoke. “We have a problem.” A disturbed look crossed most of their faces. “A problem?” one echoed. I nodded. “I apologize for calling you all so late-” “This is ridiculous.”I paused and looked at the man who'd interrupted. His hair was greying at the sides, and his forehead already boasted of wrinkles. An alarmingly large amount of crow’s feet lined his eyes. Despite that, the pride and authority in his voice could not be mistaken. I stared at him, my mind bringing up his profile. Aaron Kennedy, former Epsilon. Annoying fellow, according to my late father. Always seemed to have a stick up his ass. Recently, he'd been a stick up my ass.“What are you referring to, Aaron?” My voice was low, but powerful enough to remind him of whose presence he was before. The man glared at m

“Beta Julian!” Jacob yelled. “Beta, please, let her go. There are better ways to discuss this.” The Alpha was quiet. The Beta turned to my best friend and raised me even higher so that I was now gasping. “I should let her go, hm?” His eyes were blazing, but his voice remained deathly calm. “Read the letter.” Jacob didn't move. “She's about to choke to death. She needs proper trial first before we condemn her for whatever-” “Read the damn note, Jacob.” The man turned to glare at me. “Then you'll find out why she's a traitor.” “I…” I wheezed. “I really *cough* didn't do that-” My lungs were burning, and I was struggling to take air in. The Beta, on the other hand, looked like he could do that all day. His eyes flashed with anger as he tightened his grip.“Let her go, Julian,” a familiar voice with a withdrawn tone said, just as I was about to become unconscious.“Roman.” The Beta sounded disgruntled.“Now.” I could sense the reluctance in his gaze as he released his hold on me,
“What do you want?” I snapped. “Mate,” it complained, startling and annoying me at the same time. I hadn't expected it to refer to her at this point in time. “Injured.” I didn't register the meaning immediately, but when I did, I ran to the person who had groaned. Sure enough, my supposed mate lay on the floor, but she was in her wolf form. I stared at her, first wondering why I couldn't perceive that sweet scent of hers, then asking myself what the hell she was doing outside the pack house.Jacob had apparently placed the entire pack house on lockdown, meaning that no one would have been able to leave the compound if they hadn't snuck out. In that situation, I should have been able to perceive it everywhere as soon as I arrived on the scene, unless she... Unless she'd attempted to hide her scent.Julian's words rang through my mind, and I almost let out a growl. I didn’t care that we were mates. If I found out that she was the reason my pack was experiencing trouble, I was goi
