A DAY OF RECKONING

Forgiveness hung in the air like a heavy fog, obscuring the path forward, making every step treacherous. Kael woke up with the memory of Alaric on his knees burning into his mind. Humiliation warred with a strange, nascent hope. He couldn't deny the Alpha Prince’s effect on him, the primal pull that resonated deep within his Omega core. But could he ever truly trust a man who had so readily rejected him, who was so deeply entrenched in a world that condemned his very existence?

He forced himself out of bed, his joints aching from the emotional turmoil of the previous night. He dressed in his usual, drab servant’s uniform, the familiar cloth a small comfort in the sea of uncertainty. As he prepared to face the day, his reflection stared back, a pale, haunted visage. He was an Omega, a secret he had guarded for so long. And now, not only did Alaric know, but Prince Aaron as well.

The halls of the palace felt different this morning, charged with an unspoken tension. He could feel the eyes of other servants on him, a mixture of curiosity and disdain. The news of Prince Aaron’s visit had spread like wildfire, and with it, speculation about the reason for his prolonged stay. Kael knew he was the subject of those whispers, the anomaly that had disrupted the rigid social order.

He found Alaric already at his desk, poring over documents. The Prince looked up as Kael entered, his gaze intense and unreadable.

"Good morning, Kael," Alaric said, his voice softer than usual.

Kael merely nodded, avoiding his eyes. The memories of Alaric’s raw Alpha scent, the desperate plea in his voice, were still too fresh, too overwhelming. He busied himself with preparing the Prince's morning tea, his hands shaking slightly.

"Kael," Alaric began again, his voice laced with a hesitant vulnerability. "About last night…"

"Please, Your Highness," Kael interrupted, his voice barely a whisper. "Let's just forget it. I'm here to serve you. Let's leave it at that."

Alaric's jaw tightened, but he remained silent. The tension in the room was palpable, thick enough to choke on. They continued in strained silence, Kael meticulously performing his duties, Alaric watching him with a gaze that felt both pleading and possessive.

Later that morning, as Kael was organizing the Prince’s schedule, a knock echoed through the room. Alaric tensed, his shoulders squaring.

"Enter," he commanded.

The door swung open, revealing Prince Aaron, a bright smile illuminating his handsome features. He was dressed casually, his attire a stark contrast to the formal attire favored in Veridia.

"Alaric," Aaron greeted, his tone casual but respectful. "Hope I'm not interrupting anything. I’m here for my friend, Kael."

Alaric's eyes narrowed, his gaze flicking between Kael and Aaron. "He is currently assisting me. I require his services."

Aaron chuckled, a warm, disarming sound. "Come on, Alaric. Surely you can spare him for a few hours. I promised to show him some more of Veridia before I leave this evening. Besides, the poor guy looks like he could use a break." He turned to Kael, his smile widening. "Ready for some fun, Kael?"

Kael’s heart fluttered. He hadn't expected Aaron to push so boldly. He glanced at Alaric, whose expression was a mask of controlled fury.

"I..." Kael stammered, unsure how to respond.

Before he could answer, Alaric spoke, his voice tight. "Kael is free to do as he pleases, provided it does not interfere with his duties."

Aaron clapped his hands together, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Excellent! Come on, Kael, let's ditch this stuffy palace for a bit."

Kael hesitated for another moment, then nodded, his eyes meeting Alaric's for a fleeting second. He saw a flicker of something akin to pain in the Alpha Prince's eyes before he quickly masked it.

"Just let me get my cloak," Kael said, feeling a strange mix of excitement and guilt.

As Kael left to retrieve his cloak, Aaron leaned closer to Alaric, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "You know, Alaric, you should really let that Omega of yours breathe a little. He's quite the treasure, and it's a shame to see him so… suppressed."

Alaric’s fists clenched, but he remained silent, his jaw working.

“You're surprised I know he's your mate? Well it's not that far fetched. When he told me he has a mate who rejected him, it all made sense; he's been living within this palace his whole life, if he found a mate it'd be within the palace. Then it came back, the possessive look on your face whenever I'm near him, the way you bang my head on the wall with your eyes. It's not hard to guess. You got blessed with a beautiful mate and you threw that blessing away because you can't get over him being an Omega.”

When Kael returned, Aaron draped an arm casually around his shoulders, guiding him towards the door. As they walked past Alaric, Aaron said, his voice deliberately loud enough for the Alpha Prince to hear, "Don't worry, Alaric, I'll make sure Kael gets back safe and sound. We wouldn't want anything to happen to your… valuable servant, would we?"

The jab hit its mark. Alaric’s eyes flashed with a primal possessiveness that he quickly suppressed. He watched them leave, a knot of frustration and jealousy tightening in his chest.

The city market was even more vibrant and bustling than Kael remembered. The air was thick with the smells of spices, roasting meats, and freshly baked bread. Aaron navigated the crowds with ease, his hand lightly resting on Kael's back, guiding him through the throng.

"So, what do you want to do first?" Aaron asked, his voice cheerful. "We could try that street food everyone's raving about, or maybe check out the artisan stalls. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, we could try the… pleasures of Veridian." He winked, a playful smirk on his lips.

Kael blushed, taken aback by Aaron’s forwardness. "The artisan stalls sound lovely," he managed to stammer, trying to ignore the heat that had risen to his cheeks.

Aaron laughed, a genuine, carefree sound. "Alright, alright. Artisan stalls it is. But don't think I'm going to let you off that easily, Kael. I intend to make sure you have the best day possible."

They spent the next few hours wandering through the market, Aaron pointing out interesting crafts and haggling with vendors. He bought Kael a delicate silver bracelet engraved with a blooming flower, a small token of appreciation that brought tears to Kael's eyes. This was more affection than he'd ever had in his life.

"Thank you, Aaron," Kael whispered, his voice choking with emotion. "This is… this is so kind of you."

Aaron smiled, his eyes soft. "You deserve it, Kael. You deserve all the happiness in the world. If not for anything, for being beautiful." Aaron said the last part playful enough to earn a giggle from Kael.

As the day wore on, Kael found himself relaxing, his anxieties slowly melting away in Aaron’s easygoing presence. He laughed freely, something he hadn't done in years. He felt… seen, appreciated, and, for the first time in his life, truly accepted for who he was.

Back at the palace, Alaric paced restlessly in his chambers, his wolf agitated. He couldn't shake the image of Kael and Aaron together, their easy laughter echoing in his mind. He knew he had no right to feel jealous, he had rejected the bond, pushed Kael away. But the primal instinct to protect his mate, to keep him safe and close, was overwhelming.

He stopped at the window, his gaze drawn to the city below. He imagined Kael, laughing, smiling, basking in Aaron's attention. The thought was unbearable.

He knew he had to do something, anything, to stop this. He couldn't let Aaron steal Kael away, not when he was finally starting to realize what he had almost lost.

As Kael and Aaron were returning to the palace, hand in hand, an unusual gift for both of them. They looked like a couple, the perfect ones and it breaks Alaric.

That evening, as Aaron prepared to depart, he sought out Alaric, a serious expression on his face.

"Alaric," he said, his voice softer now. "I know you're struggling with this… with Kael. But I want you to know that I care for him deeply. He's a wonderful person, and he deserves to be happy."

"What are you saying, Aaron?" Alaric asked, his voice wary.

"I'm saying that if you can't accept him, if you can't give him the love and acceptance he deserves, then I will," Aaron said, his gaze unwavering. "I'm not afraid of what society thinks. I see Kael for who he truly is, a treasure. And I'm willing to fight for him."

Alaric's blood ran cold. He had never faced such a direct challenge. He knew Aaron was serious, that he truly cared for Kael. And the thought of losing Kael to him was almost unbearable.

"Kael is mine," Alaric said, his voice low and dangerous. "He is my mate."

Aaron raised an eyebrow, a sardonic smile playing on his lips. "Is he, Alaric? You rejected him. You pushed him away. You treated him like a servant, not a mate. You don't deserve him."

Alaric's fists clenched, his body trembling with suppressed rage. He wanted to lash out, to defend his claim. But he knew Aaron was right. He had failed Kael, he had hurt him deeply. And now, he faced the very real possibility of losing him forever.

"I'm going to change," Alaric said, his voice raw with emotion. "I'm going to earn his forgiveness. I'm going to be the mate he deserves."

Aaron studied Alaric's face, searching for any sign of duplicity. After a long moment, he nodded slowly. "Then prove it, Alaric. Show him that you're worthy of his love. Because if you don't, I'll be waiting, right around the corner. It wouldn't be hard for me to sway him away."

With those words, Aaron turned and walked away, leaving Alaric standing alone in the growing darkness, the weight of his choices pressing down on him. The battle for Kael had begun, and Alaric knew it would be the fight of his life. His prize, Kael's heart.

(Keal’s POV)The scent of lavender and lemon clung to the air in the Royal Palace, a pathetic attempt to mask the truth. My truth. Underneath the layers of soap and the hastily applied scent blockers, I was an Omega. A male Omega. A walking, breathing impossibility in the Kingdom of Veridia.Veridia was an elegant enclosure, a society built on the backs of Alphas, Betas, and Omegas, each with their designated role. Alphas were the leaders, the protectors, the dominant force. Betas were the backbone, the workers, the organizers, filling the gaps between the Alphas and Omegas. And Omegas… Omegas were meant to be delicate, submissive, the bearers of children. Female Omegas, that is.Male Omegas? We were whispered about in hushed tones, branded as cursed, an abomination against nature. Most were quietly…disposed of at birth. My mother, Elara, a former palace maid who now takes care of the palace garden, had risked everything to keep me alive. Each day was a performance. I walked, talked,

(Keal's POV)The air in the kitchens was thick with the smells of roasted meats and sugared pastries, a stark contrast to the floral sweetness I craved. Tomorrow was Prince Alaric’s thirty-first birthday, a fact hammered home by the sheer scale of the feast being prepared. Thirty-one years… a lifetime away from my meager twenty.I hated the noise, the frantic energy, the casual shoves and insults thrown my way. "Oi, Beta-boy, watch where you're going!" Chef Barnaby bellowed, his face red, as I dodged a tray laden with miniature tarts. I mumbled an apology, heart hammering against my ribs. Pretending to be Beta was exhausting, a constant tightrope walk. One wrong step, one stray whiff of my true scent, and... I didn't want to think about it.The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple as rich as the fabrics adorning the palace walls. I could feel a restlessness building inside me, a need to escape the stifling atmosphere. And then I saw him. Prince A

A day of feasting,of forced smiles, and, if the whispers were to be believed, a day of reckoning for Prince Alaric. Iwoke with a knot of anticipation twisting in my stomach, a ridiculous flutter of hope clinging tothe edges of reason. He wouldn't find a mate today. He shouldn't…how selfish and ridiculous, tohope the Prince wouldn't find a mate so I can keep my stupid crush for him going. The thought was foolish, I knew. An Alpha Prince needed a mate, needed to secure the line, needed… well, needed someone other than me, a lowly servant masquerading as a Beta. The moon held an ancient power over werewolves, dictating their transformations, their strength, and most profoundly, their mating bonds. A bond, once recognized, was believed to be unbreakable, a tapestry woven by fate itself. Yet, fate, it seemed, had a cruel sense of humor, a penchant for twisting the threads of destiny into knots of pain and rejection. A rejected mate bond was a wound that never truly healed, a constant ache in the soul, a haunting reminder of what could have been. And in the rare, almost impossible, cases of rejection from an Alpha with royal blood, the sting was amplified tenfold. Rejection of a mate bond was considered a blasphemy to the Moon Goddess, a cosmic slap in the face. It fractured the very essence of a wolf, leaving them vulnerable, unstable. While rare, rejection happened, often driven by societal pressures, political ambitions, or the agonizing reality that sometimes, destined didn't equal desired.Kael knew these facts all too well.
