Jack lay in bed drifting through sleep at a lovely pace. His dreams touched upon a frantic chase of Alex, but she just always seemed out of reach. He'd chased her to a Surface building. The room was dark, but he knew it was her. He'd cornered her, but this time he knew he had finally caught her."You're mine, rabbit," he said. His body heated as he pressed close to her. Liquid electricity coursed through his limbs as he held her to him. She kissed his neck and traced her fingers across his chest. A voice, a real voice and not a dream voice, whispered in his ear, "Rabbit? That's a new one."He was pulled from sleep like a man pulled from drowning. His body was uncomfortably hard as he fought for coherency. Fingers slid up the inside of his T-shirt tracing the line of his well-formed muscles. Sleep wore off. He was finally able to move. He flattened the hand to his chest. That familiar electricity crackled through his limbs and down to his loins. He forced his eyes open to find the r
Tom crawled out of bed over top of Ellie. Both she and Brooke seemed to misunderstand the meaning of needing space. At least Ellie wasn't trying to kiss him all the time. She just wanted to cuddle. He gathered up an armload of clean clothes along with his bathroom kit. He slipped out the door to see Alex a little disheveled and walking sleepily towards the women's bathroom."Good morning," she said as she peered around him standing in the open door. He did his best to block her view, but her ears vibrated a little meaning she'd already heard. She smiled and continued on her way.Tom finally found his words. "It's not what you think," he called after her.Alex cast a look back at him with her finger to her lips. "Shush, you'll wake her." She shot him a wink and continued on her path with maybe a little more spring in her step.Tom sighed heavily. That could have gone much worse, but he was getting the distinct impression that this dating thing with her was going to be much harder t
Jack stood with his team waiting at the docking port as the ship drifted closer to the edge. Tom and three other men stood with him, Kip and Steven, who had helped him save Tom, and a new guy from his mom's team of people named Calum. They were all good men, looked tough, and could handle Jimmy if he went into a rage. Tom shared the story of Brooke and his escape. Jack smiled. It was nice to know that Jimmy had a thing against Tom, too.The gate to the freshly renovated docking port opened. His team marched out, winding their way up the stairs to the Surface. It would be nice to get off the ship. He was trying his best to give Alex and Tom their space, so he didn't have to fight the sick feeling it gave him when he saw them together. That didn't really seem to stop Alex though. She'd come to him every night. Every time he tried to reason with her, she'd covered his mouth with her soft kisses and the conversation ended. He even tried to stay up, but she'd found him using the Link. That
The men with the guns escorted them into the run-down office then stood by the door. Jack pushed his hostage through the room towards Jimmy's voice."I don't care how fast they are, I want them dead!" Jimmy's shout echoed through the platform.Jack pushed the hostage into the room. Jimmy's eyes snapped up. He frowned at the sight of Jack's face. "Why did you come?""Mom sent me." He pulled the hostage around. "This man tried to shoot me."Jimmy nodded to one of his guards. "Shoot him."Just as the guard shot, Jack pulled the man back. "Whoa, let's talk about this for a minute. Is this how you're treating all your people?""He's not one of mine. And how dare you tell me how to run my Sanctuary."Jack pushed the hostage aside. He used his full height and stood in front of Jimmy's desk. "So, you're ruling through fear? This man has black veins all over him. He's been poisoned. Don't you think he should be given an antidote and let him speak for himself? Maybe it's messing with his
Alex tapped her fingers on the table as she listened to the communications between Janice and her teams. She wished they had visual, but instead, it was just snippets of orders barked between them. Jack was headed back down with the leader to talk strategy. It sounded like him and Jimmy were in a bit of a tiff. She grabbed the edge of the table as the ship rocked violently."What was that?" Janice asked."Looks like a missile!"Janice stood at attention. Panic laced her voice. "Where'd it come from?""Searching, ma'am," her tactical officer said. "Here, port side. Looks like a fleet of darts has found us.""Red alert!" Janice shouted. "Tell the teams to stay put top side."The communication's officer relayed the order. Alex could hear Jack's voice buzzing over her comm."Do we have anyone left to man the pods?""No, ma'am. Most everyone with experience is on the Surface."Janice's weathered face drew in a deep frown. "Options?""I can manage one," Alex offered. "One against
Jack jumped over the sand dunes and rushed down to the shore. "Lexi!" He called over the crash of the ocean waves."It's Mom! Please hurry!" She yelled back.Jack hit the hard-packed sand at a sprint. His rifle rattled as it jostled against his back. The tactical gear slowed his pace. He pushed harder until he finally reached the edge of the water."Dad!" Lexi pulled Alex along until she tripped and fell at his feet. "Something's wrong with her."Jack swung an arm around Lexi quickly before she fell, too. "It's okay, muffin. She's just cold. We'll get her all fixed up." Jack dipped down and scooped Alex up in his arms. Her light body hung limply against his chest. Lexi unclipped the floatation seat from her front then hauled Alex's bag up over her shoulder."Are we going all the way to the base?" Lexi asked as they turned up the beach.Jack took a look down at the unconscious Alex. Jimmy was going to dispatch vehicles to search for the other survivors from the ship soon. Tom woul
The sunlight streamed in through the windows and left a hot trail across Alex's face. She squinted her eyes against the sun and pulled back. Jack sat with his back to a wall with her leaning against him. His arms felt warm and protective around her. She could lay here all day if it weren't for her grumbling stomach. Lexi lay with her head on a bunched up sweatshirt in Jack's lap.Alex smiled. She loved to see their happy family together like this. Jack's words of the previous night sunk in. He wanted her to try to work it out with Tom. Maybe he didn't feel the same way. Maybe being here with them, constantly rescuing them, was annoying. She looked at his sleeping face. She shook her head. She didn't believe it for a second. Nice try Jackrabbit, but this girl was totally on to him. He was playing the gallant hero again. She would play along. She would make an attempt to be with Tom. As much as she missed him and the feelings she used to have, she didn't feel that way anymore. She knew
"Here's your room. Mine's right across the hall." Tom pointed his thumb back over his shoulder."Where's Jack staying?" Lexi asked.Tom shook his head. "I don't know. The girl in this room just moved out, so I saved this one for you ladies."Lexi pushed past him into the room and dropped her stuff on the bed."Thank you," Alex said to Tom. "I think she's just cranky from not sleeping very well. Don't mind her. She'll come around."Tom looked hopefully over her shoulder at Lexi then frowned down at her. "Are you sure?"Alex shrugged. "I wish I was. But, truly, I don't know her as well as I want to yet."Tom set a hand on her shoulder and squeezed it. "Don't worry. You both need time."Alex nodded."Will you have dinner with me?"Alex blinked. "Umm- sure?"Tom smiled. "Awesome. How's eighteen? I'll come get you.""Okay.""Alright." He bent and kissed her on the cheek then turned and disappeared down the hall with a jaunt in his step.Alex closed the door to their room. "Tha
