It was her wedding day and Amirah had tried avoiding having 'the talk' with her mother but, Hajiya found her and dragged her to her bedroom.
"Toh Amirah, you are not a kid and I really shouldn't even say more regarding this issue of marriage, you've seen enough failed marriage as it is, from Halima's son, Lawal to the one we are trying to resolve between Adnan and Samha but your brother has refused to come home. All I want you to know is that marriage is all about patience.
As a woman, try to be patient with your husband, guide his secret as thou yours, since you like running your mouth anyhow, I have to warn you, men are a breed of different species, egostical and very prideful. We women have to always remember our husbands are our king, be ready to bow to him when the need arises, men hate to be wrong so do not hesitate to agree to be at fault even when you know you aren't." Amirah bowed her head listening carefully and acting as if she wasn't utterly bored and was hating every second of this conversation.
"You have a power over your husband, wield it to your favor wisely, there might come a time in your life where you'll share him with another woman. I don't wish that for you but if it comes, use your head, be cunning and show her who's more powerful, put her in her place which is second, after you comes her, show her you are first, let her know you were there before her and that you are more powerful."
Amirah's head snapped up at Hajiya's utterance.
Hajiya sneered, "yes I am talking about I and Halima, if I had not stood up and proven to her who was here first, I'd have been the one outside the main house, peeping rather than looking, whispering rather than talking and tip-toeing rather than walking care-freely. Be guided and alert, prayers work but sometimes you have to take some drastic measures to keep your home. I was young and naive and that is why Halima even got into this home to start with so if you sense anything you do not like, don't hesitate to tell me and not that Khadijah girl, what does she know? Now that you are married, I expect you to let go of that girlish friendship you both have, you are now a woman, you should be surrounded by married women as friends so as to enable you learn one or two things."
Amirah had long decided into this talk that Hajiya was crazy and had no idea what she was even saying, so she wasn't even listening to heed to any of the advices her mother was dishing out.
"Lastly, be always ready for your husband, stop being lazy Amirah, you are now a woman, you now have a home and a husband, sleeping all the time isn't what you should be doing, the transformation from being a girl into a woman is a huge moment in every female's life, I congratulate you. I've said mine and I can only talk, I can't make you listen but if you know what is good for you, you will."
"Thank you Hajiya, I've heard you and I'll try my best to do as you've said." Amirah said glad that the conversation was over.
"If you like don't do your best, oho! It's not me that will be crying when my husband no longer comes back home to me. Anyways, I have some things to give you."
Amirah watched carefully as Hajiya went into her wardrobe and brought out a white polythene bag, she placed the leather ontop her bed and began to bring out the contents under the watchful eyes of Amirah.
"These are the kayan mata I got specially for you." Amirah's eyes widened at this, Hajiya didn't seem to notice her daughter's reaction or rather, she chose to ignore it as she busied herself trying to decipher which from which and when she did, she continued,
"This one is vagina tightner, from the name you already know what it does but if you want me to elaborate..."
Amirah immediately interrupted, "No! No! Hajiya what's all this haba?"
"DanAllah-please keep shut! What do you know? It seems you are ready to lose Muhammad, well me I'm not ready to lose face in front of my friends, it's better he ends up like Taheer rather than him divorcing you."
Amirah gasped, Taheer was Ya Hamidah's late husband, she didn't believe Hajiya could be this callous wishing death for her husband so as she shouldn't lose face.
"Hajiya!" She exclaimed.
"Don't Hajiya me! Do you know the things Aisha and her mother did? Do you think it's ordinary that her husband is showing her this much love and doing everything she wants? Be there decieving yourself. As I was saying, this is kohl, just be applying it twice a week, you'll be the coolness of his eyes, I promise you."
Amirah sighed and Hajiya caught on it and flared, "do you know how many girls wish to have this opportunity? Do you know how expensive these things are?"
Tired, Amirah said, "Hajiya just continue, I'm listening."
"Better, ehen this one you'll apply it before you sleep, it'll make..."
•••• •••• •••• ••••
It was time for Amirah to be taken to Muhammad's family house, her whole family was gathered in the main parlor with the exception of Adnan and Aunty amarya.
Khadijah, Fareedah and Na'eemah had tears in their eyes. Amirah has never been close to Zarah who sat down solemn, watching the whole scene.
Alhaji Aliyu cleared his throat, an indication he wanted to speak, "Amirah!" He called.
"Na'am?"
"You are going far from home, I expect you to show good conduct wherever you find yourself. I and your mother have raised you up well and taught you to the best of our knowledge. As you are taking this bold step now and completing half of your deen, I pray Allah guide you to the right path, stray you from angering Him and recieving His wrath, may Allah bless your new home, grant you both patience, may you be the coolness of each others eyes, may there be..."
Amirah was tired of replying amin to her father's prayers which proceeded to go on for a few more minutes.
"That's the little I can contribute into this union of yours and may Allah answer our prayers." A chorused amin rang through the house then they proceeded out.
Inside the compound, two cars has been arranged with Amirah's luggages, the drivers have been given the location of the couple's new home in Lagos and they were set to leave for Lagos immediately.
Aunty amarya came out of her wing and went up to Amirah, Hajiya placed a hawk eye on them both and every movement they made.
"Here you go Amirah, this is the best gift I can give you, the holy book." Aunty amarya handed her a black medium sized bag.
"Thank you very much." Amirah said before engulfing her step mother into a hug, she wished things were different in their household. Aunty amarya was a woman with a golden heart who didn't deserve the treatment melted out to her by both Hajiya and Baba. Many a times, some issues she feared to discuss with Hajiya, she did with Aunty amarya and she recieved the best advice money could buy.
The most prominent being when she and Khadijah finished their secondary school, Baba had asked what they wanted to go study in the university, Khadijah had immediately said accounting for she had the passion to become a banker, Amirah had hesitated for she hadn't really thought about it. Baba said he'll give her a week to think thoroughly about what she wanted to become but the moment she had retired to her room, Hajiya barged in, held her by the ear and said,
"So at this point you don't know what you want to be ko? The Khadijah that has her mind made up on being a banker, isn't she your mate? If you know what's best for you, tomorrow morning you'll go to your Baba and tell him you want to study medicine, you'll be a doctor!"
Amirah knew she didn't want to be a doctor, so she sneakily went to Aunty amarya and discussed her problems for Khadijah had told her it was her mother who had helped her realize her passion for accounting. Truly, Aunty amarya had discussed at length with Amirah and at the end of the day, she decided she wanted to study architecture. Six years later now and she had a certificate showing she had graduated with a second class upper from the federal university in the state.
"I'll miss you so much." She gave Aunty amarya one last hug just as Hajiya screamed at her to hurry up.
Amirah hugged her sisters that weren't going with them and tears pooled up in her eyes when she realized how much she was going to miss them especially Na'eemah.
Baba, Hamida, Hajiya and one of her sisters, mama Sumayya entered one car that had Lawal behind the wheels, while Amirah, Aunty Samha and Khadijah entered the a different car that was been driven by Samir.
Muhammad's family house wasn't that far and when they got there, it was full of noise and activities as they all awaited the arrival of the bride, Amirah took in a deep breath, this was it!
•••• •••• •••• •••• "Is my Amirah shy all of a sudden?" Muhammad asked in a teasing voice. At twenty nine, Muhammad was a surgeon, he stood tall and handsome. His face had been what drew Amirah to him at first but she had a problem, she easily got bored with people, she rarely had any attachment to men and was a strong disbeliever in love unlike her sucker for love new husband."I'm not shy, just hiding my tears from you." She replied using her veil to shield her face more as she turned away from him. He bent in front of her."Hey, it's okay to be sad, I don't hold that against you after all I'm the one who's come and taken you from your family. This is a new journey for the both of us, scary but exciting and I want you to know how glad I am that I'm starting this journey with you. We might face many obstacles along the way but I want you to know that we'll be together every single step of it In Sha Allah and I'll never let g
•••• •••• •••• •••• They both decided it'll be best to have separate rooms for now, Muhammad had said,"I'll wait for however long it takes for you to get comfortable with me but be warned, once you do, you won't be able to keep your hands off this hunk."They both bursted into laughter, "hunk is a muscular man, see your thin arms, no be only hunk, you that have the face of hulk."His eyes widened in horror and she laughed hard at his reaction, now retired back in her room, Amirah smiled at the memory as she arranged her clothes in the wardrobe, Muhammad was just something else. When they had met, she had been blown away with how much this good looking man was staring at her and when he had walked up to her to make her laugh and collect her number, Amirah had already began crushing on everything about him.It took her four months to get bored and irritated
••••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah opened the door angrily to reveal Muhammad dressed in a black thawb, water dripping from his beards."Assalamu alaykum." He said."I told you I was unclean, why in Allah's name are you here again?" She spat."I thought you'll be clean enough to pray, I'm sorry.""I'm not clean today, I won't be tomorrow neither will I be the day after nor ever. Just go ahead and perform your prayers letting me be.""Do you know Allah said the convenant that distinguishes us from the disbelievers is the prayer, so whoever abandons it has committed disbelief?""You want to teach me my religion now huh?" She asked with a sneer.
12th August 2014•••• •••• •••• ••••The days that followed their dinner date had Amirah terribly missing home, Muhammad was back to work, her only companion for a few hours was Mrs Jane and she tried to keep the woman longer than necessary."Is there anything else you want me to do?" Mrs Jane asked her eyes twinkling with amusement, Amirah groaned."No, I'm afraid I have to let you go.""I don't have anything else to do today so I'd be going to the market, would you like to join me?"Amirah's eyes lit up with mirth and an excited nod followed."Finally! An opportunity to leave this place."Mrs Jane laughed, "it's quite a fun estate, some of the doctor's wives are really nice."
12th August 2015•••• •••• •••• ••••Weeks had gone by since their wedding and now it was two months, some days Muhammad felt he had gotten through to Amirah and other days, he wondered what was wrong with her.His main problem with her was her refusal to perform the fajr salat with him, he had no idea if she performed the rest of the prayers but he was certain that she never woke up during the time of fajr prayers to perform it, even in her room. Her actions baffled him, prayer shouldn't be a problem for her, she'd been raised in the north and in a Hausa home for that matter so why was she acting strange?Tomorrow would be marking their two months wedding anniversary, he'd unfortunately forgotten the first month but he wanted to make up on their second, maybe he should take her out, somewhere fancy, buy he
•••• •••• •••• ••••Muhammad would have loved her to lash out at him, at this point he'll appreciate her rude way of talking to him, he'll appreciate anything but the silence. He saw the tears that gathered in her eyes right before she shut the door to her room, retreating. It's been two days and yet he had barely seen her, she wasn't out of her room before he leaves for work and she was already in her room when he gets back, the only sign she was in the house was his dinner that was always waiting for him on the table. He'd decided he couldn't take it anymore, the silence was killing him, the thought of not knowing what Amirah was feeling, how she was mourning. So that evening when he got back from work, he stormed past the dinning table where his dinner was and went straight to knock on her door.
•••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah landed in Kano hours prior and was now in a taxi heading off to her family house. It's been hours since the call from Zarah and since then she hadn't been able to reach anyone else.Zarah wasn't picking up, Khadijah's number wasn't going through, Hajiya's was switched off and she had chosen to steer clear of ya Lawal.Since her two older siblings had dumped the family problems on her, she'd had to step up, after all she was used to it.The house was eerily quiet she noted as soon as she stepped into the sitting room."Zarah!" She called out but was answered by silence, Amirah shook her head before going upstairs to her old bedroom, it was still as she'd left it: clean. She was on her way back downstairs when a door opened and Na'eemah poked out her head."Ya
•••• •••• •••• ••••Muhammad could barely focus at work, he kept getting distracted by the thoughts of Amirah, what was she doing? How were things at home? How was she coping? He knew Hajiya could be something else, the woman intimidated him and his parents didn't even like her much, intensifying the time she'd gone ballistic when he'd announced his promotion and transfer. He didn't know what happened between her and her co-wive but he didn't think it reached the extent of arresting her.He got into his office and disposed of his bloodied scrubs, he just got out of surgery. He immediately picked up his phone and called Amirah."Assalamu alaykum." She greeted in a tired voice."Wa'alaykumsalam. Sorry I didn't call earlier, I had a surgery, how was your journey?""Fine."
Ya... Ya Adnan?" She asked stuttering, her eyes widened when from the moonlight illuminating the room, she noticed he was naked."sshhh..." He said quietly as his hand gently pulled her closer, she moved back from him, her heart beating fast."Wh... What are you doing?" She asked with a stutter. Amirah was sweating more now and she wanted this to be a bad dream, she also wanted to wake up from it already."Calm down, you'll enjoy it." His large palm grabbed her breast and she immediately pulled away with such force, it shocked them both.Adnan gave her a deafening slap that muted her for few seconds before she let out a scream that was interrupted with another deafening slap, she let out a whimper as tears ran down her cheeks."Ya Adnan please, please don't do this.""You'll enjoy this my little Mirah, you will."His hands were rough on her, pulling her b
April 3rd 2003"What's that noise?" Khadijah asked Amirah, they just got back from school and were yet to enter inside the house.Amirah shrugged as she chewed her biscuit nonchalantly while they both made their way into the compound.Hajiya was shouting and cursing aunty Amarya yet again, was there ever a day Hajiya didn't have an issue with aunty Amarya?"Not again." Khadijah groaned. Her mother was on a stool, sitting quietly as Hajiya dished her insults upon insults."Useless fool, stupid woman. Better go and look for where to sleep tonight because wallahi you won't step a foot inside this house." Hajiya swore. Aunty Amarya still didn't flinch.Amirah simply stared at her mother while Khadijah left and went to meet hers. Baba had travelled to Katsina the previous day, he was due to be back in one month time. She knew
"Ramadan shopping list completed!" Amirah announced before dropping the pen on the table dramatically."I've been thinking." Muhammad said coming out from the kitchen with a bowl of cereal, "we should get a house help."Amirah looked at him surprised, "why?""Which one is why?""Why should we get a house help?""Well to help you with the chores after all, we're having a baby.""Oh Allah, not again. I'm not sure yet so drop it until it's confirmed.""I can feel it, my instinct about this one is strong." Muhammad insisted with a broad smile on his face. It's been two months since Amirah had started seeing symptoms of pregnancy but she was scared of confirming so she'd told Muhammad about it yesterday and that's all he's been talking about."I'm tired of you already.""You'll come to the hospital for a test aft
•••• •••• •••• ••••Her therapist was a pleasant faced woman, she smiled at Amirah who was tell very nervous but somehow her smile seemed to ease Amirah's nerves but only a little. All along she'd kept asking herself what she was doing, numerous times she'd almost changed her mind and gone back to the safety of her home and enjoy her solitude but curiosity won against her fears so here she was in this annoyingly bright office."Hello. Please sit." She said motioning to the chair opposite her. Amirah sat down slowly."I'm Tara, how're you doing today?""I'm fine, good." Amirah said her heart racing, she wanted to leave. This wasn't right, she wasn't crazy, she should get up and leave now, Muhamm
•••• •••• •••• ••••The rest of the drive was silent, Amirah relaxed on her seat and closed her eyes listening to an old school hit playing. Muhammad regularly turned to stare at her, he felt bad about how he'd spoken to her and he didn't know what to do next.Ummul Khair was almost alone, she had sounded frightened when she'd called and he wanted to be there for her? How could he continue with his outing and go have fun knowing that someone close to him was in such state, it wasn't about him having feelings for Ummul Khair or anything of that sort, she was his friend and he wanted to be there for her.He couldn't deny that there wasn't a special tenderness he felt for her but nothing more, it may have resulted from the fact that she was always there for him and how pitifully lonely she was. She was his friend now and she knew stuff about him e
•••• •••• •••• ••••Few days after her breakdown, Amirah was feeling better, she and Muhammad planned to spend the day together doing lavish outings and she was excited for that.Muhammad had made an appointment with a therapist for her and it was in three days time, she had mixed feelings about that one but she was hopeful now that she was atleast getting somewhere."You still won't change your mind about us watching the scary..." The words died on his lips and his steps halted as he came into the room and saw Amirah's bare back, she hurriedly tried to cover up but it was too late. She'd come into the room to pick up her phone but then decided to change her blouse which was why Muhammad had barged into her room, he wasn't expecting to see her topless."What was that?" He asked coming close to her. S

"My Adnan would never do that on his own." She'd say, "something must have happened."And when he'd started touching seve

Since he'd left, she had been thinking of how to resolve the issue, telling the truth wasn't an option... Apologizing seemed like the best thing but he'd requested for an explanation and in all honesty, she had none to give. She regretted what had happened with AbdulRahman, it wasn't worth the troubles aftermath. She liked her job far too much to consider quitting, working made her feel better, whenever she stayed home, her thoughts ran wild but since she'd started working and kept busy, she had buried all thoughts about her mother and brother. Amirah really enjoyed being alone, her team members had tried their best in the past one month to get as close to her as possible but it'd been futile.
