The days that followed their dinner date had Amirah terribly missing home, Muhammad was back to work, her only companion for a few hours was Mrs Jane and she tried to keep the woman longer than necessary."Is there anything else you want me to do?" Mrs Jane asked her eyes twinkling with amusement, Amirah groaned.
"No, I'm afraid I have to let you go."
"I don't have anything else to do today so I'd be going to the market, would you like to join me?"
Amirah's eyes lit up with mirth and an excited nod followed.
"Finally! An opportunity to leave this place."Mrs Jane laughed, "it's quite a fun estate, some of the doctor's wives are really nice."
Amirah raised an eyebrow in disbelief, "and the others?"
"Highly rude, arrogant and prideful."
They both bursted into a fit of laughter before Amirah changed into something more appropriate to go outdoors.
The market was quite busy and Amirah was as gleeful as a child allowed sweets.
After about two hours of roaming around the market and getting stuffs, Mrs Jane suggested they go to a nearby restaurant for they were undeniably famished.
Mrs Jane was probaby few years younger than Hajiya but Amirah loved the fact that the lady treated her well, as if they were of close range in age. She understood her and they conversed quite well.
The woman had only two daughters and they were both married, she was educated but worked as a cleaning lady at the estate exclusively, the pay was mouth drooling she had said, Amirah decided it'd be rude to ask how much it was so she had kept shut."I know it's not in my place to say but, I noticed you and your husband are not really as chummy as I expected, trust me I know how newlyweds behave and it's no way close to how you and your husband do."
Amirah sighed, she knew her feelings for Muhammad wasn't deep and she wondered why, he was handsome, rich, sweet and the best part, in love with her. A lot of girls are wishing to be in her place but to be honest, she found her husband quite boring and too good.
Oh Allah! what was she even saying? A lot of women hoped for a good man and here she was saying hers was too good for her liking, she must really be crazy. She noticed Mrs Jane was still looking at her perharps expecting an answer.
"I don't love him."Mrs Jane's gaze didn't waver, "I guessed as much but your husband loves you dearly, why did you get married to him when it was a one sided love?"
"Long story, maybe some other day." Amirah said suddenly feeling fatigued.
Mrs Jane's smile was a coy one, "do be careful dear, he is a fine man."
Amirah was glad the topic changed from her and Muhammad's relationship for she felt uncomfortable talking about how she didn't reciprocate his love, he knew she didn't but she was sure he wouldn't appreciate her discussing it.Mrs Jane was happily chattering about her daughters and Amirah smiled at the way Mrs Jane spoke of her daughters with so much fondness and joy and it was obvious how much she misses them.
Amirah wondered if Hajiya ever spoke about her like that, at the thought of that she scoffed, Hajiya would never, not because she didn't love them but their accomplishments come first where she and her friends concerned, and where accomplishments were concerned, Hajiya would rather not talk about Adnan."They do not call me." Mrs Jane was saying, "Ella sometimes doesn't pick my call, she feels I pester her a lot, but maybe I do, my girls are grown, they are capable of thinking for themselves, that's what my husband tells me. They 'll still be kids in my eyes, don't worry dear, you'll one day understand the love a mother has for her child when you finally have one of your own."
Amirah didn't want to burst the woman's bubble by telling her she couldn't picture herself wanting a child now or anytime soon. She wasn't really a fan of children, they irritated her with the way they wail over absolutely nothing and everything.
"Is there anything else you'd like us to do before going home?" Mrs Jane asked
"Not really, I'm a bit tired even. I'll just go home and stock the fridge, take a nap before I start preparing dinner."
"Said just like a true housewive, since you get utterly bored during the day, why don't you just get a job?"
A job? Amirah smiled at the prospect, she had thought of it, of course her degree wouldn't be going to waste.
"I've thought of the idea, it does sound like a great one, I'd talk to my... Muhammad about it."
She didn't miss the knowing smile Mrs Jane semt her way, she just chose to ignore it.
"I'm free tomorrow, we could go jub hunting together." Mrs Jane offered.
Amirah found herself smiling again, this woman was God-sent and she silently patted herself on the back for not telling her off the first day she had come knocking at their gate.
"I really don't know what I'd do without you. Maybe slump and die from boredom." Amirahsaid jokingly.
Mrs Jane shook her head, "I need to have a word with that workaholic husband of yours."
Amirah laughed as they stood up exiting the restaurant. Mrs Jane hailed a taxi for her, she told the driver the name of the estate which was located in Lekki.Amirah waved at Mrs Jane before the woman headed off to take the public bus home.

Amirah was frustrated and was currently berating herself.
"Why are you even bothering yourself to get worked up about this? It's not like he asked you to cook him dinner or dress prettily. Stupid, stupid girl, just go to bed, he's not coming home now or even tonight."
She had prepared a sumptous meal, taken a long bath then dressed up in a beautifully sewn atampa. She had perfumed her body, washed her hair and applied a lavender scenting oil on it, all for what? for him to not pick her calls.
Mrs Jane had been the cause of this, she felt bad about the way she's been treating and even treated Muhammad and so she decided since she agreed to marry him, she might as well put in effort into making it work. They were married now and there was probably nothing that was going to change that fact so she might as well start giving it her all, just as he had.
Now look at what that foolish decision had caused her, her heart writhed with agony as a thought crossed her mind; Is he seeing someone else? A prettier woman? One who'd finally show him the love and attention she's been depriving him. It wasn't as if she loved him or anything, it was just a woman's thing, to have something or someone whom you'd always thought would only have eyes for you look somewhere else, give that same attention to another woman was a huge blow to the ego of any woman, deny or may not and that was what Amirah was feeling now.
She cleared the table and threw the food she had painstakingly prepared into the bin, washed the plates and pot clean. Well then, if Muhammad has gotten someone who loves him, she wouldn't be a hindrance, tomorrow she'll go with Mrs Jane on a job hunt and live her life her way since he was doing the same but, he bloody hell not come knocking at her door at dawn for fajr prayers or she might just remove the door from it's hinges and break it on his head.
12th August 2015•••• •••• •••• ••••Weeks had gone by since their wedding and now it was two months, some days Muhammad felt he had gotten through to Amirah and other days, he wondered what was wrong with her.His main problem with her was her refusal to perform the fajr salat with him, he had no idea if she performed the rest of the prayers but he was certain that she never woke up during the time of fajr prayers to perform it, even in her room. Her actions baffled him, prayer shouldn't be a problem for her, she'd been raised in the north and in a Hausa home for that matter so why was she acting strange?Tomorrow would be marking their two months wedding anniversary, he'd unfortunately forgotten the first month but he wanted to make up on their second, maybe he should take her out, somewhere fancy, buy he
•••• •••• •••• ••••Muhammad would have loved her to lash out at him, at this point he'll appreciate her rude way of talking to him, he'll appreciate anything but the silence. He saw the tears that gathered in her eyes right before she shut the door to her room, retreating. It's been two days and yet he had barely seen her, she wasn't out of her room before he leaves for work and she was already in her room when he gets back, the only sign she was in the house was his dinner that was always waiting for him on the table. He'd decided he couldn't take it anymore, the silence was killing him, the thought of not knowing what Amirah was feeling, how she was mourning. So that evening when he got back from work, he stormed past the dinning table where his dinner was and went straight to knock on her door.
•••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah landed in Kano hours prior and was now in a taxi heading off to her family house. It's been hours since the call from Zarah and since then she hadn't been able to reach anyone else.Zarah wasn't picking up, Khadijah's number wasn't going through, Hajiya's was switched off and she had chosen to steer clear of ya Lawal.Since her two older siblings had dumped the family problems on her, she'd had to step up, after all she was used to it.The house was eerily quiet she noted as soon as she stepped into the sitting room."Zarah!" She called out but was answered by silence, Amirah shook her head before going upstairs to her old bedroom, it was still as she'd left it: clean. She was on her way back downstairs when a door opened and Na'eemah poked out her head."Ya
•••• •••• •••• ••••Muhammad could barely focus at work, he kept getting distracted by the thoughts of Amirah, what was she doing? How were things at home? How was she coping? He knew Hajiya could be something else, the woman intimidated him and his parents didn't even like her much, intensifying the time she'd gone ballistic when he'd announced his promotion and transfer. He didn't know what happened between her and her co-wive but he didn't think it reached the extent of arresting her.He got into his office and disposed of his bloodied scrubs, he just got out of surgery. He immediately picked up his phone and called Amirah."Assalamu alaykum." She greeted in a tired voice."Wa'alaykumsalam. Sorry I didn't call earlier, I had a surgery, how was your journey?""Fine."
•••• •••• •••• ••••They finally got Hajiya to release Aunty amarya and Samir. Amirah was currently in her mother's bedroom."...and that was how Zarah brought Shittu, her supposed boyfriend to come and beat up Khadijah...""Which Shittu?" Her mother's expression changed to that of anger."Shittu that we all know." Amirah replied."Zarah has killed me!" Hajiya exclaimed before rushing out of the room and soon she heard shouting coming from Zarah's room. Amirah fell ontop the bed, she was sure she'd been drained of all her energy today.Amirah couldn't help the anger she felt towards Hamidah, although she could never openly express it for her elder sister was feared and highly respected. Hamidah hadn't even called to ask if they've resolved the issues in the house.
•••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah couldn't decide whether the blue gown or the black, she dropped both on her bed with a sigh. She usually wasn't good at decision-making and that was where she needed Khadijah the most but now there was still a strain in their relationship. Five days had passed and she'd barely seen her, she was feeling embarrassed to go to Aunty amarya's place, all because of Hajiya's remorseless act.Among the rest of her siblings, Amirah was the closest to their mother, sometimes herself she wondered if it was because they were similar in character but she was always quick to contradict her thought, she was better than Hajiya, at least she felt remorse if she found out she'd done wrong.Growing up, Amirah had despised her mother, the mere presence of the woman used to disgust her, she had no ide
•••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah hated the tears, once they started, they seemed to refuse to stop. Crying was for the weak, Hajiya had once said, crying doesn't solve anything but gives you more reason to indulge in self pity. She'd lived with that thought, she'd masked her emotions and sometimes she really didn't know what she was feeling or what she wanted to feel. When the tears stopped pouring out, she scoffed at how pathetic she must look, sitting on the floor, crying. Why? Why was she crying? Over something silly as no-one ever sitting her down to ask about how she felt, she almost slapped herself. That was the thing about the tears, once they began to pour out, they don't stop and when they finally do, you're left feeling silly and pathetic about letting the first
•••• •••• •••• ••••Her eyes were focused outside the window as she leaned back on her seat. The view wasn't anything special as they were yet to take-off, just people boarding. It was few seconds before they took-off when she heard a deep voice say irritatedly, "you're in my seat."She was aware of that fact but she didn't care, he should take the other seat."No I'm not." She replied monotonous."This is why I hate flying commercial." She heard him mutter under his breath and she snapped her head towards him, her breath hitched in her throat... The man was breathtaking. The sharp reply she had for him turned to a slight stutter, "ee...excuse me?"He ignored her and settled down on the seat that was supposed to be hers. From her side eye she studied him, his somewhat bushy eyeb
Ya... Ya Adnan?" She asked stuttering, her eyes widened when from the moonlight illuminating the room, she noticed he was naked."sshhh..." He said quietly as his hand gently pulled her closer, she moved back from him, her heart beating fast."Wh... What are you doing?" She asked with a stutter. Amirah was sweating more now and she wanted this to be a bad dream, she also wanted to wake up from it already."Calm down, you'll enjoy it." His large palm grabbed her breast and she immediately pulled away with such force, it shocked them both.Adnan gave her a deafening slap that muted her for few seconds before she let out a scream that was interrupted with another deafening slap, she let out a whimper as tears ran down her cheeks."Ya Adnan please, please don't do this.""You'll enjoy this my little Mirah, you will."His hands were rough on her, pulling her b
April 3rd 2003"What's that noise?" Khadijah asked Amirah, they just got back from school and were yet to enter inside the house.Amirah shrugged as she chewed her biscuit nonchalantly while they both made their way into the compound.Hajiya was shouting and cursing aunty Amarya yet again, was there ever a day Hajiya didn't have an issue with aunty Amarya?"Not again." Khadijah groaned. Her mother was on a stool, sitting quietly as Hajiya dished her insults upon insults."Useless fool, stupid woman. Better go and look for where to sleep tonight because wallahi you won't step a foot inside this house." Hajiya swore. Aunty Amarya still didn't flinch.Amirah simply stared at her mother while Khadijah left and went to meet hers. Baba had travelled to Katsina the previous day, he was due to be back in one month time. She knew
"Ramadan shopping list completed!" Amirah announced before dropping the pen on the table dramatically."I've been thinking." Muhammad said coming out from the kitchen with a bowl of cereal, "we should get a house help."Amirah looked at him surprised, "why?""Which one is why?""Why should we get a house help?""Well to help you with the chores after all, we're having a baby.""Oh Allah, not again. I'm not sure yet so drop it until it's confirmed.""I can feel it, my instinct about this one is strong." Muhammad insisted with a broad smile on his face. It's been two months since Amirah had started seeing symptoms of pregnancy but she was scared of confirming so she'd told Muhammad about it yesterday and that's all he's been talking about."I'm tired of you already.""You'll come to the hospital for a test aft
•••• •••• •••• ••••Her therapist was a pleasant faced woman, she smiled at Amirah who was tell very nervous but somehow her smile seemed to ease Amirah's nerves but only a little. All along she'd kept asking herself what she was doing, numerous times she'd almost changed her mind and gone back to the safety of her home and enjoy her solitude but curiosity won against her fears so here she was in this annoyingly bright office."Hello. Please sit." She said motioning to the chair opposite her. Amirah sat down slowly."I'm Tara, how're you doing today?""I'm fine, good." Amirah said her heart racing, she wanted to leave. This wasn't right, she wasn't crazy, she should get up and leave now, Muhamm
•••• •••• •••• ••••The rest of the drive was silent, Amirah relaxed on her seat and closed her eyes listening to an old school hit playing. Muhammad regularly turned to stare at her, he felt bad about how he'd spoken to her and he didn't know what to do next.Ummul Khair was almost alone, she had sounded frightened when she'd called and he wanted to be there for her? How could he continue with his outing and go have fun knowing that someone close to him was in such state, it wasn't about him having feelings for Ummul Khair or anything of that sort, she was his friend and he wanted to be there for her.He couldn't deny that there wasn't a special tenderness he felt for her but nothing more, it may have resulted from the fact that she was always there for him and how pitifully lonely she was. She was his friend now and she knew stuff about him e
•••• •••• •••• ••••Few days after her breakdown, Amirah was feeling better, she and Muhammad planned to spend the day together doing lavish outings and she was excited for that.Muhammad had made an appointment with a therapist for her and it was in three days time, she had mixed feelings about that one but she was hopeful now that she was atleast getting somewhere."You still won't change your mind about us watching the scary..." The words died on his lips and his steps halted as he came into the room and saw Amirah's bare back, she hurriedly tried to cover up but it was too late. She'd come into the room to pick up her phone but then decided to change her blouse which was why Muhammad had barged into her room, he wasn't expecting to see her topless."What was that?" He asked coming close to her. S

"My Adnan would never do that on his own." She'd say, "something must have happened."And when he'd started touching seve
•••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah unlocked the gate with her key, as soon as she got into the compound, she noticed Muhammad's car wasn't anywhere around indicating he wasn't in the house, she didn't know whether to be relieved or worried. Since he'd left, she had been thinking of how to resolve the issue, telling the truth wasn't an option... Apologizing seemed like the best thing but he'd requested for an explanation and in all honesty, she had none to give. She regretted what had happened with AbdulRahman, it wasn't worth the troubles aftermath. She liked her job far too much to consider quitting, working made her feel better, whenever she stayed home, her thoughts ran wild but since she'd started working and kept busy, she had buried all thoughts about her mother and brother. She said laughing as she settled herself on the seat opposite Amirah who had a plate of chips and egg and a strawberry smoothie."Is that all you're eating?" Ife asked."Yes, I get full easily." Amirah really enjoyed being alone, her team members had tried their best in the past one month to get as close to her as possible but it'd been futile. Ife stuck."So I've been hearing juicy gists o..." Ife said leaning towards her to whisper, Amirah rolled her eyes uninterested in office gossip.Ife continued "...
