Weeks had gone by since their wedding and now it was two months, some days Muhammad felt he had gotten through to Amirah and other days, he wondered what was wrong with her.His main problem with her was her refusal to perform the fajr salat with him, he had no idea if she performed the rest of the prayers but he was certain that she never woke up during the time of fajr prayers to perform it, even in her room. Her actions baffled him, prayer shouldn't be a problem for her, she'd been raised in the north and in a Hausa home for that matter so why was she acting strange?
Tomorrow would be marking their two months wedding anniversary, he'd unfortunately forgotten the first month but he wanted to make up on their second, maybe he should take her out, somewhere fancy, buy her a gift, maybe he should call Khadijah and ask what she might like, it was unfortunate that he didn't know what his own wife would like. Abubakar usually teased him about him and Amirah living like housemates.He was still contemplating on what to do with Amirah when he heard a commotion going on downstairs, an indication that there's been arrival of new patients who needed urgent attention, just immediately his pager rang out;
Doctor Muhammad, you are needed at the emergency ward, surgery unit 5.
He stood up immediately and ran downstairs, nurses were wheeling patients in and calling for the attention of several other doctors, there'd been an accident. Muhammad headed to unit 5 and saw a bloodied patient lying on the bed, three nurses were in the room.
"Heart beat is faint."
"Clogged lungs."
"Head injury is fatal."
He took three strides and reached the patient, he stumbled backwards as he identified her, it was Mrs Jane, the cleaning lady.
Before he could even give out any instruction, one of the nurses pronounced her dead. His eyes widened and his breath hitched in his throat, he wasn't new to death cases but this was Mrs Jane, his wife's only friend in this city, her confidante and the one Amirah always looked forward to her coming. What was he going to tell her?"Are you alright sir?" One of the nurses asked, the others simply stared at him worriedly, they must be baffled by his reaction.
"I'm fine. Do you have any way to contact her family?"
"No sir, the bus she was in was involved in a fatal accident along..."
He didn't wait to listen to the rest of her words as her exited the unit, the hallways was still in commotion and more patients were been brought in, since his was dead, he proceeded to the next trying to focus on his job and not what Amirah would think if she found out Mrs Jane was dead.
It took several hours before serenity enveloped the hospital's environment. Some patients had lost their lives and others have been stabilized, the nurses were trying to get in touch with the family members of the victims and the media had been outside trying to get any news they could about the situation.
Muhammad was currently on the way to the masjid situated in.the hospital premises, he'd missed asr, maghrib and Isha'a prayers as it was few minutes almost 10pm now.Beside him, Abubakar spoke, "either ways you have to tell her, just make sure you are there to help her grieve."
Muhammad nodded his hear wordlessly and headed to the ablution section, when he was done with prayers, he headed back to his office while Abubakar simply patted his back before heading off to his car ready to go home.
His phone was lying on his table but he didn't bother giving it a second look, his thoughts were solely on how Amirah would take the news, ya Allah! He really didn't want to be the bearer of bad news.He remembered years ago his fiance lying on the hospital bed, sick and dying yet he couldn't do anything, he'd tried his best but it hadn't been enough for the night her parents had finally convinced him to go home and rest, Jamila had died, he hadn't even been there as she took her last breath. He hated anyone having to feel that same agony he'd felt, much less Amirah.
When he finally got his ass up ready to go home, his eyes widened not only at the fact that it was almost 11pm, but that he'd missed Amirah's calls three hours ago.
What if something had happened to her abd he wasn't there? He could almost feel the urgency in the four times she'd called him, he could even taste it, the terribly bitter taste of not being there for the one he loved... again. His car sped along the tarred road of the highway and his heart rammared against his ribcage as the anguish he was feeling caused him to begin sweating despite the cold breeze that rushed out of his car's AC.
He got down from his car and unlocked the gate, he went back into his car and drove into the compound, after getting down from his car and locking it, he ran into the house and knocked furiously on Amirah's bedroom door all the while praying to Allah that she was fine, he wouldn't forgive himself if something had happened to her. When the door open to reveal Amirah looking hale and heart, he breathed out in relief but panic soon rose in him at the glare she was sending him.
"What is it? What do you want from me Muhammad? Just because I'm married to you I should then be deprived of my sleep?"
He sighed, Amirah was at it again.
"I'm sorry, I missed your calls and I got scared thinking something bad had happened to you for you called me five times." She was smelling really good, even though she was in her night dress, he felt she was looking very prettier. What had she been up to?
"Where we you?" She blurted out, he watched her eyes bulge slightly, probably surprised by her own question.
He was shocked at it, "What?"
Gaining her confidence, she raised her chin, "Where have you been and why were you not picking my calls?"
"I was at the hospital of course, where else would I have been?"
"Then why weren't you picking my calls? You always send me a message if you are going to be late. If you were at the hospit as you so claim, then you should have picked my calls."
He shook his head at her, "I'm too tired for this."
"There's someine else right? Another woman? Tell me, I won't judge you or tell mummy." She taunted knowing how much Muhammad respected and obeyed his mother.
He flared, "there's no other woman. I love you and only you and even if you don't find my deserving of your love, I'd appreciate it if you at least trust me because I've done nothing but be honest towards you and if you are really inclined to know, there was an accident. Mrs Jane was among the victims and I'm sorry to say but she's dead."
The shock on her face mirrored his and he almost slapped himself for his stupidity, that wasn't how he had planned on breaking the news to her.
Amirah's face had gone ashen as she asked, "Mrs Jane is what?"
•••• •••• •••• ••••Muhammad would have loved her to lash out at him, at this point he'll appreciate her rude way of talking to him, he'll appreciate anything but the silence. He saw the tears that gathered in her eyes right before she shut the door to her room, retreating. It's been two days and yet he had barely seen her, she wasn't out of her room before he leaves for work and she was already in her room when he gets back, the only sign she was in the house was his dinner that was always waiting for him on the table. He'd decided he couldn't take it anymore, the silence was killing him, the thought of not knowing what Amirah was feeling, how she was mourning. So that evening when he got back from work, he stormed past the dinning table where his dinner was and went straight to knock on her door.
•••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah landed in Kano hours prior and was now in a taxi heading off to her family house. It's been hours since the call from Zarah and since then she hadn't been able to reach anyone else.Zarah wasn't picking up, Khadijah's number wasn't going through, Hajiya's was switched off and she had chosen to steer clear of ya Lawal.Since her two older siblings had dumped the family problems on her, she'd had to step up, after all she was used to it.The house was eerily quiet she noted as soon as she stepped into the sitting room."Zarah!" She called out but was answered by silence, Amirah shook her head before going upstairs to her old bedroom, it was still as she'd left it: clean. She was on her way back downstairs when a door opened and Na'eemah poked out her head."Ya
•••• •••• •••• ••••Muhammad could barely focus at work, he kept getting distracted by the thoughts of Amirah, what was she doing? How were things at home? How was she coping? He knew Hajiya could be something else, the woman intimidated him and his parents didn't even like her much, intensifying the time she'd gone ballistic when he'd announced his promotion and transfer. He didn't know what happened between her and her co-wive but he didn't think it reached the extent of arresting her.He got into his office and disposed of his bloodied scrubs, he just got out of surgery. He immediately picked up his phone and called Amirah."Assalamu alaykum." She greeted in a tired voice."Wa'alaykumsalam. Sorry I didn't call earlier, I had a surgery, how was your journey?""Fine."
•••• •••• •••• ••••They finally got Hajiya to release Aunty amarya and Samir. Amirah was currently in her mother's bedroom."...and that was how Zarah brought Shittu, her supposed boyfriend to come and beat up Khadijah...""Which Shittu?" Her mother's expression changed to that of anger."Shittu that we all know." Amirah replied."Zarah has killed me!" Hajiya exclaimed before rushing out of the room and soon she heard shouting coming from Zarah's room. Amirah fell ontop the bed, she was sure she'd been drained of all her energy today.Amirah couldn't help the anger she felt towards Hamidah, although she could never openly express it for her elder sister was feared and highly respected. Hamidah hadn't even called to ask if they've resolved the issues in the house.
•••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah couldn't decide whether the blue gown or the black, she dropped both on her bed with a sigh. She usually wasn't good at decision-making and that was where she needed Khadijah the most but now there was still a strain in their relationship. Five days had passed and she'd barely seen her, she was feeling embarrassed to go to Aunty amarya's place, all because of Hajiya's remorseless act.Among the rest of her siblings, Amirah was the closest to their mother, sometimes herself she wondered if it was because they were similar in character but she was always quick to contradict her thought, she was better than Hajiya, at least she felt remorse if she found out she'd done wrong.Growing up, Amirah had despised her mother, the mere presence of the woman used to disgust her, she had no ide
•••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah hated the tears, once they started, they seemed to refuse to stop. Crying was for the weak, Hajiya had once said, crying doesn't solve anything but gives you more reason to indulge in self pity. She'd lived with that thought, she'd masked her emotions and sometimes she really didn't know what she was feeling or what she wanted to feel. When the tears stopped pouring out, she scoffed at how pathetic she must look, sitting on the floor, crying. Why? Why was she crying? Over something silly as no-one ever sitting her down to ask about how she felt, she almost slapped herself. That was the thing about the tears, once they began to pour out, they don't stop and when they finally do, you're left feeling silly and pathetic about letting the first
•••• •••• •••• ••••Her eyes were focused outside the window as she leaned back on her seat. The view wasn't anything special as they were yet to take-off, just people boarding. It was few seconds before they took-off when she heard a deep voice say irritatedly, "you're in my seat."She was aware of that fact but she didn't care, he should take the other seat."No I'm not." She replied monotonous."This is why I hate flying commercial." She heard him mutter under his breath and she snapped her head towards him, her breath hitched in her throat... The man was breathtaking. The sharp reply she had for him turned to a slight stutter, "ee...excuse me?"He ignored her and settled down on the seat that was supposed to be hers. From her side eye she studied him, his somewhat bushy eyeb
•••• •••• •••• ••••Dinner was awkward. As soon as they'd gotten home, Muhammad carried her luggage from the trunk into the house, he turned on the light and her eyes widened slightly. On the floor, rose petals were well arranged leading to the dinning where a candle-lit dinner awaited her.Muhammad carelessly walked to her bedroom making sure to scatter the petals with his feet as he moved, Amirah stood gazing at the sumptuous dinner arrangement. Muhammad came into the dining room and blew out the candles, packed them all and disposed of them in the bin."What are you doing?" She'd asked in a low voice, he ignored her. After he was done disposing of the candle and the huge bouquet of flowers which had been on the table, he sat down and began to eat. She quietly sat down too and dished food for herself, he'd prepared jollof
Ya... Ya Adnan?" She asked stuttering, her eyes widened when from the moonlight illuminating the room, she noticed he was naked."sshhh..." He said quietly as his hand gently pulled her closer, she moved back from him, her heart beating fast."Wh... What are you doing?" She asked with a stutter. Amirah was sweating more now and she wanted this to be a bad dream, she also wanted to wake up from it already."Calm down, you'll enjoy it." His large palm grabbed her breast and she immediately pulled away with such force, it shocked them both.Adnan gave her a deafening slap that muted her for few seconds before she let out a scream that was interrupted with another deafening slap, she let out a whimper as tears ran down her cheeks."Ya Adnan please, please don't do this.""You'll enjoy this my little Mirah, you will."His hands were rough on her, pulling her b
April 3rd 2003"What's that noise?" Khadijah asked Amirah, they just got back from school and were yet to enter inside the house.Amirah shrugged as she chewed her biscuit nonchalantly while they both made their way into the compound.Hajiya was shouting and cursing aunty Amarya yet again, was there ever a day Hajiya didn't have an issue with aunty Amarya?"Not again." Khadijah groaned. Her mother was on a stool, sitting quietly as Hajiya dished her insults upon insults."Useless fool, stupid woman. Better go and look for where to sleep tonight because wallahi you won't step a foot inside this house." Hajiya swore. Aunty Amarya still didn't flinch.Amirah simply stared at her mother while Khadijah left and went to meet hers. Baba had travelled to Katsina the previous day, he was due to be back in one month time. She knew
"Ramadan shopping list completed!" Amirah announced before dropping the pen on the table dramatically."I've been thinking." Muhammad said coming out from the kitchen with a bowl of cereal, "we should get a house help."Amirah looked at him surprised, "why?""Which one is why?""Why should we get a house help?""Well to help you with the chores after all, we're having a baby.""Oh Allah, not again. I'm not sure yet so drop it until it's confirmed.""I can feel it, my instinct about this one is strong." Muhammad insisted with a broad smile on his face. It's been two months since Amirah had started seeing symptoms of pregnancy but she was scared of confirming so she'd told Muhammad about it yesterday and that's all he's been talking about."I'm tired of you already.""You'll come to the hospital for a test aft
•••• •••• •••• ••••Her therapist was a pleasant faced woman, she smiled at Amirah who was tell very nervous but somehow her smile seemed to ease Amirah's nerves but only a little. All along she'd kept asking herself what she was doing, numerous times she'd almost changed her mind and gone back to the safety of her home and enjoy her solitude but curiosity won against her fears so here she was in this annoyingly bright office."Hello. Please sit." She said motioning to the chair opposite her. Amirah sat down slowly."I'm Tara, how're you doing today?""I'm fine, good." Amirah said her heart racing, she wanted to leave. This wasn't right, she wasn't crazy, she should get up and leave now, Muhamm
•••• •••• •••• ••••The rest of the drive was silent, Amirah relaxed on her seat and closed her eyes listening to an old school hit playing. Muhammad regularly turned to stare at her, he felt bad about how he'd spoken to her and he didn't know what to do next.Ummul Khair was almost alone, she had sounded frightened when she'd called and he wanted to be there for her? How could he continue with his outing and go have fun knowing that someone close to him was in such state, it wasn't about him having feelings for Ummul Khair or anything of that sort, she was his friend and he wanted to be there for her.He couldn't deny that there wasn't a special tenderness he felt for her but nothing more, it may have resulted from the fact that she was always there for him and how pitifully lonely she was. She was his friend now and she knew stuff about him e
•••• •••• •••• ••••Few days after her breakdown, Amirah was feeling better, she and Muhammad planned to spend the day together doing lavish outings and she was excited for that.Muhammad had made an appointment with a therapist for her and it was in three days time, she had mixed feelings about that one but she was hopeful now that she was atleast getting somewhere."You still won't change your mind about us watching the scary..." The words died on his lips and his steps halted as he came into the room and saw Amirah's bare back, she hurriedly tried to cover up but it was too late. She'd come into the room to pick up her phone but then decided to change her blouse which was why Muhammad had barged into her room, he wasn't expecting to see her topless."What was that?" He asked coming close to her. S
•••• •••• •••• ••••Ten years ago when Adnan was a student at the Sokoto state University, he was arrested for raping a girl, his parents had paid heavily to not let the news go public and they'd also paid to have him released but his expulsion was inevitable. When he'd come back home, his mother treated him like an egg and even though Adnan had confessed to raping the girl, Hajiya insisted it was a conspiracy, that was how much she supported him in everything, she refused to believe he'd ever do anything bad without provocation. "My Adnan would never do that on his own." She'd say, "something must have happened."And when he'd started touching seve
•••• •••• •••• ••••Amirah unlocked the gate with her key, as soon as she got into the compound, she noticed Muhammad's car wasn't anywhere around indicating he wasn't in the house, she didn't know whether to be relieved or worried. Since he'd left, she had been thinking of how to resolve the issue, telling the truth wasn't an option... Apologizing seemed like the best thing but he'd requested for an explanation and in all honesty, she had none to give. She regretted what had happened with AbdulRahman, it wasn't worth the troubles aftermath. She liked her job far too much to consider quitting, working made her feel better, whenever she stayed home, her thoughts ran wild but since she'd started working and kept busy, she had buried all thoughts about her mother and brother. The only person she'd spoken to from home

She said laughing as she settled herself on the seat opposite Amirah who had a plate of chips and egg and a strawberry smoothie."Is that all you're eating?" Ife asked."Yes, I get full easily." Amirah really enjoyed being alone, her team members had tried their best in the past one month to get as close to her as possible but it'd been futile. Ife stuck."So I've been hearing juicy gists o..." Ife said leaning towards her to whisper, Amirah rolled her eyes uninterested in office gossip.Ife continued "... I heard from someone who heard from someone that they've been seeing the boss in your office
