"What are you doing here?"
That's what Willow's boss, Erica, had said after closing her office door as Willow entered. The woman hugged Willow sympathetically; before, she had been the coldest and most heartless boss ever.
"I'm really in shock," Erica continued. "Are you all right, dear?"
Willow just nodded awkwardly. "I guess."
Erica gestured for Willow to sit down and then hurriedly took the chair behind the dark brown polished wooden table. The look in the superior's eyes was so worried when she saw Willow's condition, which could not be considered healthy. Willow's eyes were still puffy from crying last night. And she was dressed too casually for the office.
"Why are you going to work, you should be on break," Erica snapped.
"I don't know where else to go. I can't stay home because the police are still investigating." Willow tried to control her emotions again. She didn't want to shed tears for the umpteenth time.
"I understand," Erica nodded. "But you need to focus on the case. At least for a few days or weeks, until you're feeling much better."
"I don't know, Mrs. Hobbs." Willow shrugged. "I want to find Zoey, but I don't know where. In the meantime, I have to turn everything over to the authorities and just wait."
"Waiting is a frustrating time."
"It is."
There was a hesitation in Erica's eyes to continue the conversation. She was actually confused because she had heard the bad news about Willow. That Willow's daughter had been kidnapped by a gang out of nowhere. Then Willow had defended herself and killed one of the gang, and Charlotte, the nanny, had also been victimized. It was very complicated.
One way for Willow to stay sane was to escape to the office.
But Erica also had to think about the reputation of the office and the people who worked there. The news about Willow had already spread and was being broadcast on local television. If Willow continued to work as usual, the news would be all over her. Erica didn't want that to bother the other employees.
"I understand your situation, Willow. But I suggest you take some time off. Being in the office won't really stabilize your condition. You're in shock," Erica said.
Was it necessary for Erica to prepare Willow's temporary accommodations and needs so that she could be in and out of the office and avoid problems in the future? That was what the fifty year old woman had in mind.
Willow had been with the company for more than a decade. One of the model employees, not flashy, but quite good. Although Erica rarely interacted with Willow, she knew that her employee was never a problem. Naturally, Erica's sympathies were aroused when she received the news of the incident.
"Do you have any relatives or anyone who can stay with you for a while?" asked Erica, with the same question Shawn Jensen had asked last night.
Willow just shook her head. "No, Mrs. Hobbs. I'm here alone."
Erica wet her lips. "I'm giving you a week off. Do you understand, Willow?"
"But I don't know where to go."
"You can stay at the Riverview Lodge on the Lee River. Our family often vacations there."
Of course, Willow knew about Riverview, an exclusive and private place. The lodge overlooks the river. It is surrounded by forest. Very relaxed, beautiful, peaceful. Spooky, a little.
Willow's brow furrowed. "But it's out of town, Mrs. Hobbs."
"I know, so you can rest there and not be distracted."
"But the police have asked me to stay in town. Not to go anywhere, especially alone. It's for my safety. They say."
Erica looked troubled, a worried look on her face. "Gosh, I didn't think of it that way."
"I'm going to talk to the detective on my case. If it's better for me to stay away from the office, I'll stay at the hotel," Willow interrupted.
"I'm sorry, Willow. It's for everyone's comfort and safety."
Willow forced a smile. "I understand, Mrs. Hobbs."
"Call me when the detective gives you permission. You can leave at any time. I'll send you the address of the cabin."
"Thank you," Willow nodded.
Wasting no time, Willow hurried out of Erica's office and unpacked in the tiny cubicle where she worked. She left the office in a hurry, her head down. People seemed to be whispering and no one dared to approach Willow. At least to offer sympathy or something. Unfortunately, no, Willow just became the subject of their gossip.
***
Willow entered the hotel lobby and was immediately approached by the receptionist. The woman signaled to Willow that someone was waiting for her in the lobby lounge. She nodded and hurried into the waiting room where she saw Shawn.
The man was typing on his cell phone, and when he saw Willow coming, he immediately put the phone in his jacket pocket.
"I didn't know you were leaving," Shawn said.
"To the office."
"But you were having a hard time."
"I knew, I just didn't know what to do. Then I went to the office," Willow explained. "My boss gave me a week off after I got there. She didn't even want me to go to work."
Shawn just blinked and nodded briefly. Then Willow sat down across from him.
"She asked me to get away for a while and offered me a place near the Lee River," Willow went on.
"It's out of town."
Willow nodded. "I know, and I told her I couldn't go. Because of security concerns."
"Actually, as long as someone can accompany you and you can be easily contacted, it's not a problem."
"Can't I just be alone?"
Shawn didn't answer and just cleared his throat quietly. The man looked briefly at the receptionist and then back at Willow.
"We found tracks around your house. Strange tracks," Shawn said.
"Footprints?"
"More like animal footprints. And there's more than one, we're not sure yet."
"And Zoey?"
"Surveillance cameras everywhere haven't picked up Zoey. But we're doing our best to keep looking for your daughter."
Willow buried her head in her hands and sobbed uncontrollably. There was no way she could think positively, that the worst would not happen. She wasn't blind to the fact that there were many terrible things that happened to kidnapped girls out there.
"Mrs. Anberline," Shawn called.
"Don't tell me to calm down!"
"I need you to focus."
"You don't know what it's like to lose your child."
"I do."
For a brief, silent moment, Willow paused, controlling her emotions. She stared intently at the detective, who was probably in his late thirties.
"I lost my son in an accident. That's what they said, because the case wasn't solved." Shawn cleared his throat. "So I know how you feel."
"Sorry, my condolences."
Shawn gave a crooked smile. "It's okay, it's been a while. So, are you ready for the questions I'm going to ask you?" Shawn asked suddenly.
"What kind of questions?"
"Have you ever suspected anyone before? Or someone following you? Threaten you? Things that made you feel uncomfortable."
Willow shook her head weakly. "Nothing."
"Have you had any interactions with strangers lately?"
"No, I haven't. I don't have anyone, didn't I tell you before?"
"So you don't have a boyfriend?"
"Is that part of your investigation?"
Shawn just shook his head and smiled again. "I'm sorry."
The detective never meant to be rude. But who wouldn't be attracted to a woman like Willow?
She had a well-proportioned body with an exotic tan. Back-length wavy hair the color of chestnut, which she always wore in a bun, revealing the free nape of her neck. Willow is different from most women in town. She moved to the outskirts of Seattle in search of a new life and peace. Peace that lasted only six to seven years. And now her life was shattered again.
"And Zoey's father? Did you contact him? Maybe he heard something?" Shawn asked cautiously. "I don't want to invade your privacy, but this is pretty important."
"I haven't seen him since I was pregnant with Zoey. I don't know where he is," Willow replied matter-of-factly.
Shawn nodded in understanding. "All right. If there are any new leads, I'll let you know right away."
"Thank you, Detective Jensen."
"About you going into seclusion for a week. I'll ask my partners to look after you. It's procedure."
"Okay."
Willow got out of the car and breathed in the crisp afternoon air. The lodge was beautiful, overlooking the forest and the banks of the Lee River. A pang of sadness came over her, wishing she could have been there with Zoey. Two officers followed from the car, assigned to accompany Willow for the week. One was a woman named Chelsea. She was two years Willow's senior. The other officer's name was Derek. The officers were communicative and put Willow at ease during the drive to Riverlodge."Wow, this is amazing," Chelsea commented."How long do we have to stay in a place like this?" Derek chuckled."We're staying in the car, Derek." Chelsea cleared her throat quietly and then turned to Willow. "Mrs. Anberlin, we'll be in the car, so you don't have to worry," she said.Willow gasped in surprise. "But why, no, I don't want to be alone in there.""You need time to settle down, Mrs. Anberlin." Chelsea smiled. "We don't want to make you uncomfortable.""I don't mind, come on... it's going to
Willow didn't move, just stared at Kyler coldly, her arms still crossed. Kyler withdrew his hand and cleared his throat quietly, he was starting to get confused about how to explain everything to Willow. Well, not everything all at once, but the things Willow needed to know right now. "So what?" Willow asked, going straight to the point. "Your daughter was kidnapped by my pack, the Messer." The look in Willow's eyes turned to emotion and she immediately ran to the kitchen. She grabbed a knife and a handful of garlic, and with shaking hands she plunged the knife into Kyler. Even the garlic. "What was that for?" asked Kyler in a casual tone. "Calm down, Willow. I'll explain." "Your pack? Then you conspired with them, and now you want to blackmail me?" Willow shouted angrily. "How dare you! I told you, there are two officers here to arrest you right now!" "Put down the knife and the garlic. Are you going to cook me?" Willow looked confused, stressed, and tired. She sighed softly a
Willow shuffled along in the darkness of the night, entering an area of the woods that was so dark. They had been walking for over twenty minutes, which seemed like an eternity to Willow. This time her hand was so sore from Kyler's tight grip. Willow's mind was so frantic, it was like a nightmare.Who was hunting them? Kyler's pack? Or who? And what about the two officers who had accompanied Willow? Willow's head felt like it was going to burst and her chest felt tight. She was really tired."Stop," Willow pleaded and her body slumped to the ground."We have to get out of here," Kyler replied impatiently."I can't run like you!" she cried in frustration. "It's all dark, even my feet hurt from stumbling. I don't have LED eyes or anything like you!"Kyler sighed softly, though Willow thought it was a rude snort that made her even more annoyed with the man in front of her. Suddenly Kyler crouched down and his hands cupped Willow's lower body."
They walked on, and Willow followed what Kyler said. She never looked back. How could she consciously turn her head or look behind her shoulder when she found it so difficult to even look forward? Everything was pitch black. All she could do was trust Kyler's footsteps in front of her as he held Willow's hand tightly.Vaguely, Willow could hear the crunch of twigs breaking and bushes rustling. She tried not to peek behind her, but she knew whoever was chasing them was close.Guilt tore at Willow's heart; if only she hadn't been so slow, they might have reached the highway sooner. She cursed herself for never having exercised or warmed up so that at least Willow's body would have more stamina.Willow's eyes narrowed as she saw a faint point of light behind the trees about ten meters ahead. She also began to hear the sound of cars, though it was not crowded, but there were several passing by. Suddenly, Kyler let go of her hand."Go, now!" Kyler commanded hastily."What? What do you mean
"Mrs. Anberlin, you need to calm down," Shawn said. "Panic will only make your mind cloudier and more uncontrollable."Willow felt like punching the know-it-all, how could he give her advice when she was in a precarious situation. Shawn had no idea what creatures might be after them. If Willow explained, Shawn would just think she was nuts. But Willow didn't want to die stupidly with the detective."Just call the police in town. Then we'll wait somewhere. At least somewhere safe," Willow suggested forcefully. "I'm sure that's a wise move!""I assure you that -"Willow interrupted immediately. "It's blood! Police cars were lined up and parked in the courtyard of the lodge, while the ambulance had left a few minutes ago. Willow sat on the sofa, her body wrapped in a jacket, her hands clutching a mug of coffee. She was very tired, but she couldn't close her eyes. Who knew how long she'd have to wait there and go back to the town together with Shawn. This time, Willow would probably be taken to the police station for further questioning. She had told Shawn honestly that it was most likely a werewolf or a lycan that had attacked them. But Shawn's reaction had been silence. Then Willow had to face the fact that her status had changed from witness to suspect, even though there was no evidence against her. The world seemed really funny to Willow. Shawn, who came in through the back porch door, approached Willow, his face grim and hard as he looked at her. "We're going to town now." Willow just nodded slowly and set her mug down on the coffee table. She got up and stepped behind Shawn. For
Kyler woke up immediately. He saw Willow in the doorway, and the man screamed as loudly."Aaa!!!"Then the door slammed shut with a loud 'blam'. Willow rested her head against the door frame. She was too tired to be subjected to so many horrible surprises."Willow?" The voice came from inside the room."Did you cover up?" Willow asked a little sarcastically. Then she grumbled, "Don't let him cover himself with my blanket."Yes."As soon as Willow opened the door again, she saw Kyler standing on the edge of the bed. He was covering half of his body with the blanket. She cursed inwardly. Why does he have to use my blanket? Oh, hell no!'"What are you doing here?" Two women were talking on the porch, looking very serious. One older woman and one much younger. The older woman was wearing a coat and carrying a large bag as she prepared to leave. As for the woman in front of her, she looked tired, although she was neatly dressed in office clothes. "Remember, talk to Zoey carefully," the old woman said in a whisper. "I know." "Moving to a new school, of course there are things that will make her uncomfortable. At first." "Thank you for your concern, Mrs. Charlotte. I wouldn't have known what to do if you hadn't been there to help me." Old Charlotte patted Willow's shoulder lovingly. She had worked with the young woman since Zoey was only a few months old. She knew very well what Willow's life had been like, from being down and out to being more stable now. The problem Willow had to deal with lately was Zoey's troubling behavior. Her little girl had just started elementary school. Zoey often cried and whined, and Charlotte was often overwhelmed t

Suddenly she felt something jump onto her body and lunge at her.Alpha fought. He fought the furry monster and defended Willow. Willow jumped back in time to save herself."Zoey!" Willow cried, suddenly remembering her daughter. As Willow crawled to the stairs, she saw something very unnatural.Alpha's body was crackling, growing. It wasn't normal growth, but it was getting bigger and bigger. So Alpha's stature was exactly the same as the monster in front of her, the only difference being that Alpha's fur was completely white."My goodness!" she exclaimed in horror. All Willow could see were two mutant dog-like creatures. They attacked each other and burst into the house. Alpha tried to protect Willow, who was pinned helplessly to the stairs. There was a loud crash. The noise was deafening. The furniture was smashed and destroyed. Then there was the sound of their clawing and biting each other and the howling they let out to each other. As Alpha's body was dragged into the living room
